Pacers-Trail Blazers Preview

Coach Frank Vogel want his Central Division-leading Indiana Pacers to be a better road team, and while they can't lift their record away from home above .500 during their trip, they can come awfully close.

Close hasn't been good enough of late for the slumping Portland Trail Blazers.

Indiana goes for a seventh straight victory over a Western Conference opponent while trying to hand the Blazers a seventh consecutive defeat Wednesday night.

The Pacers (26-16) are tied with Miami with an Eastern Conference-best 16-3 home record, but they owned a 9-13 mark outside Indianapolis before beginning a four-game trip with Monday's 82-81 victory over Memphis.

"We knew we had to turn things around," said George Hill, whose free throw with 1.3 seconds left was the difference. "Coach challenged us to be above a .500 road team, and it started with (Monday)."

Indiana, a 99-92 winner over Portland (20-21) on Dec. 5, is on its longest single-season run against West opponents since a nine-game stretch Jan. 28-March 17, 2004.

The Blazers have lost three times to East teams, including league-worst Washington on Monday, during their season-worst four-game skid at the Rose Garden. Their last 0-5 stretch at home spanned March 20-April 1, 2006.

Nicolas Batum had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists for his first career triple-double, but it wasn't enough to help the Blazers avoid a 98-95 loss to the Wizards.

"We shouldn't be losing, especially at home," guard Wesley Matthews told the Blazers' official website. "We don't take anything away from these teams, but we're better than that."

The Blazers need to improve in close games. They've played in a franchise-record 10 straight contests decided by six points or fewer, and they've lost by a total of 28 since their last victory, 92-90 over the Heat at home Jan. 10.

"You don't see stretches like this," coach Terry Stotts said. "The one thing that hasn't wavered is that I like the way our team competes."

However, Stotts can't like his team's shooting. The Blazers, 10-0 when hitting 47.8 percent of their attempts or better, are shooting 41.4 percent during their skid.

Ending that slide - their longest since finishing 0-7 last season - could be tough against the defensive-minded Pacers, who lead the NBA in field goal defense (41.3 percent) and scoring defense with 89.1 points per game.

Indiana has been far less impressive on the offensive end, averaging 91.2 points. The Pacers, though, shot 49.3 percent Monday against a Grizzlies team that is ranked second to Indiana in scoring defense (89.4) and holding opponents to 43.5 percent shooting.

"Forty-nine percent against that team, one of the best defensive teams in the league, is pretty impressive," Vogel said. "Obviously, too many turnovers (20) but happy to get the 'W.'"

Indiana, which has lost seven straight when yielding 90 or more points on the road, has dropped three in a row at Portland.

The Pacers are going for their first two-game season sweep of the Blazers since 2007-08.

Aldridge has 27 and Blazers beat Pacers 100-80

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) LaMarcus Aldridge insists he wasn't thinking about an All-Star spot.

"I was just trying to win," shrugged the Trail Blazers forward after scoring 27 points in Portland's 100-80 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.

The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Blazers. Portland also ended a four-game skid at home and avoided dropping five straight at the Rose Garden for the first time since 2006.

Aldridge was a first-time All-Star last year, but is by no means a lock this season. The reserves, selected by the coaches from each conference, will be announced on Thursday.

The six-year veteran said he honestly doesn't believe that he'll make the West squad this year.

"If I don't get in, I'm not going to worry about it," he said.

Rookie Damian Lillard added 20 points and eight assists, while J.J. Hickson had 14 points and 13 rebounds for his 24th double-double this season.

Portland shot a season-high 56.4 percent from the floor against Indiana, the league's best defensive team. No other team had shot that well from the floor against the Pacers this season.

Paul George had 22 points and seven rebounds for Indiana, which had won seven straight against Western Conference teams, its longest streak since 2004. Indiana (26-17) lost for the third time in 10 games.

"We knew coming in that this team was going to challenge us, especially on their floor," said George, himself a candidate to nab a reserve spot on the East All-Star team. "They had us scrambling, running all over the floor all night. Aldridge did a good job of knocking shots down and getting hot. `'

The Pacers were coming off an 82-81 victory at Memphis on Monday to open their four-game road trip.

The Blazers (21-21) bounced back from a 98-95 loss to Washington on Monday on Jordan Crawford's buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Nicolas Batum, who had his first career triple-double in that game, hit a 3-pointer that gave the Blazers an early 18-13 lead over the Pacers.

Portland snapped a 10-game streak in which all of its games were decided by six points or less, a franchise record.

"It was refreshing, especially since we were on the good side of it," Blazers coach Stotts said about the lopsided margin. "That 10-game streak of last-minute games, that was fun basketball but it was tough. To be honest, when you're up 15 with three minutes to go, you still don't think you quite have it. But we needed a win like that."

D.J. Augustin tied it at 20 with a 3-pointer to start the second quarter. Augustin hit another 3 to put the Pacers ahead 24-22, but the lead was short-lived and Portland went up 34-26 on rookie Will Barton's running jumper and layup.

Aldridge made three consecutive long jumpers for a 44-28 lead as Portland broke it open with a 22-4 run. The Blazers led 44-32 at the half.

His dunk made it 55-42 midway through the third quarter.

Lillard's pull-up jumper gave the Blazers a 76-59 lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Blazers' biggest margin of the game was the final score. It was Portland's greatest margin of victory this season.

"It's about time," said Lillard, who did not commit a single turnover in the game.

The Pacers have lost four straight in Portland.

"They came out and played with great desperation. It's very difficult to come out play a really good team on a six-game losing streak," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "They came out and brought the fight to us with their defense."

Notes: The Blazers' first poster night of the season got off to a rocky start because of a printing error. The posters, which feature Hickson, won't be ready until next week. Fans with a ticket stub to Wednesday night's game will be able to get one in the team's fan shop. ... Indiana's 32 first-half points were a season-low for a Portland opponent this season. ... Indiana defeated Portland 99-92 on Dec. 5.

THE FACTS: LaMarcus Aldridge scored 27 points as Portland went nearly wire to wire with a 100-80 blowout of Indiana Wednesday night at the Rose Garden.

It was the most decisive victory of the season for the Trail Blazers (21-21), who snapped a season-high six-game losing streak.

Damian Lillard collected 20 points and eight assists with no turnovers and J.J. Hickson picked up his 24th double-double of the campaign with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Blazers.

Paul George scored 22 points and David West tallied 15 of his 21 points in the second half for the Pacers (26-17), who had won 16 of their previous 21 games.

QUOTABLE: "We've played so many two-point games, tonight was kind of weird for us. But the guys played great."

THE STAT: Portland shot a season-high 56.4 percent from the field against the NBA's No. 1 defensive team. It was the best shooting percentage all season for an opponent of Indiana, which entered the game leading the league in scoring defense (89.1 points) and opponents' field-goal percentage (41.3).

TURNING POINT: The game was tied 24-24 early in the second quarter when Aldridge and rookie Will Barton keyed a 20-4 run that pushed Portland ahead 44-28. The Pacers never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

HOT: Aldridge was 8-for-11 in the first half and 12-for-17 in the game, scoring a majority of his points on mid-range jumpers.

NOT: Indiana shot 37.5 percent from the field, the third-worst percentage by a Portland opponent this season.

GOOD MOVE: Lillard scored 16 of his points in the second half, attacking the rim for many of his baskets.

BAD MOVE: The Pacers matched Portland's offseason five-year, $55-million offer sheet for center Roy Hibbert, who had nine points, seven rebounds and no blocked shots going against Portland's Hickson, who signed a one-year, $4-million deal. Hickson had 14 points and 13 boards.

NOTABLE: The Portland Trail Blazers had played a franchise-record 10 straight games that were decided by six points or fewer. The Blazers won the first four contests before dropping six in a row.

QUOTABLE III: "Tonight was refreshing, especially since we were on the good side of it. That 10-game streak was fun basketball, but it was tough. We needed a win like that. We haven't had a lot of wins like that. To have it at this stage was pretty refreshing."
