Hornets-Bobcats Preview

Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist only lost twice as freshmen at Kentucky last season while winning a national championship. With both now playing for rebuilding franchises in the NBA, they're finding things a little more difficult.

Davis' New Orleans Hornets and Kidd-Gilchrist's Charlotte Bobcats are a combined 1-25 since Dec. 5. They will meet for the second time this season on Saturday night in Charlotte.

The Hornets beat the Bobcats 107-99 on Nov. 9, but Charlotte (7-22) quickly rebounded by winning six of its next eight to improve to 7-5 and match its entire win total from 2011-12.

But they haven't improved on that figure since. The Bobcats have lost 17 straight, creeping closer to the 23-game losing streak that wrapped up last season. The longest slump in NBA history is Cleveland's 26 consecutive losses during the 2010-11 season.

Charlotte gave itself little chance to end the streak Friday, missing 13 of its first 16 shots to fall into an 18-point deficit against Brooklyn. The final losing tally was 97-81 against a Nets team that had fired its coach only a day earlier. Kidd-Gilchrist struggled with three points on 1-of-6 shooting and Hakim Warrick's 13 points were enough for a team high.

The Bobcats actually outscored Brooklyn 66-64 over the final three quarters.

"It's tough. We can't put ourselves in that kind of position," said Kemba Walker, who paces the Bobcats with 18.2 points per game.

Charlotte has made slow starts a habit and has been outscored by an average of 6.8 points in the first quarter during its losing streak.

"We don't have a lot of depth on our team to come back against great teams, but we do every once in a while, but we can't do that all the time," said Walker, who was held to five points on 2-of-10 shooting. "We dig ourselves in holes we can't get out of."

Davis, averaging 15.1 points and 8.4 rebounds, is having more individual success than Kidd-Gilchrist (10.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg), but the Hornets (6-23) have lost 12 of 13, with the lone win coming over Orlando on Wednesday.

Davis was three shy of a season high with 25 points on Friday as New Orleans pushed the Raptors to overtime before falling 104-97.

"Once he gets stronger, it's going to be game time," Hornets coach Monty Williams said of Davis, who is third among rookies with 2.8 blocks per 48 minutes.

"He's starting to figure out how to use his quickness to get to the basket, and he's starting to make jump shots."

Reserve forward Jason Smith returned for the Hornets on Friday after missing the last seven games with a torn labrum. He scored two points in 12 minutes but should give the Hornets' front line more depth as they try for their fourth straight win in Charlotte.

Ben Gordon had a season-high 34 points off the bench for the Bobcats in the season's first meeting. Gordon, whose career 22.1-scoring average against the Hornets is his highest against any team, scored 10 against Brooklyn after missing the previous three games with right knee soreness.

Hornets extend Bobcats' skid to 18 games

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Eric Gordon made his return to the lineup Saturday night. And for the better part of 24 minutes, he looked as if he'd never been away.

Gordon had 24 points and seven assists, helping the New Orleans Hornets overcome a 21-point first-half deficit and extend the Charlotte Bobcats' losing streak to 18 games with a 98-95 victory Saturday night.

The Bobcats are one game away from a winless December. They haven't won since Nov. 24 and are closing in on their franchise-record 23-game losing streak to close the 2011-12 season.

Gordon, who hadn't played since April 22 following arthroscopic right knee surgery, was 5 of 13 from the field and 12 of 14 from the free throw line. He had two steals and two turnovers.

"I felt pretty good, I was kind of surprised," Gordon said. "Now I'm just going to try to get better and better from here. I wouldn't have had a chance to help this team earlier with my knee, but I'm glad everything is working out now."

Ryan Anderson had 19 points and made a pair of 3-pointers in the final period as the Hornets won for the second time in three games.

Anderson was all smiles after the game.

"I haven't had open looks like that in quite a while," he said.

On a late possession, Gordon drove the lane drawing attention from defenders and passed the ball outside where Anderson knocked down a 3-pointer to push New Orleans' lead to six.

Roger Mason, who had all 13 points in the second half, added another 3-pointer on the next possession because of the attention the Bobcats were paying to Gordon.

Anderson said those are the tough moments defenders will be forced to contend with when they face the Hornets the rest of the way.

"He's a special player," Anderson said of Gordon. "There are not a lot of guys like him in the NBA. He hasn't quit warmed up to be 100 percent comfortable yet with this group on the court, but to come out and take over like that, that is the mark of a special player."

Hornets coach Monty Williams said he didn't expect that type of production from Gordon in his first game back.

"I certainly thought he would be able to help guys and make guys better," Williams said. "But I didn't think he'd score 24 points. His defense will get better the more he gets in shape."

The Bobcats had two chances to tie the game after the Hornets threw the ball away with 11 seconds left, but Ben Gordon and Ramon Sessions both missed 3-pointers in the closing seconds.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 22 points and nine rebounds and Gerald Henderson added 19 points for the Bobcats.

Kidd-Gilchrist outplayed former Kentucky teammate Anthony Davis in the first half, scoring 18 points on 9 of 11 shooting.

"I had it going a little bit," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "That's going against my best friend, so of course it's special."

But the No. 2 overall pick left the game near the end of the first half after scratching the cornea in his right eye while diving for a loose ball.

He returned in the third quarter wearing protective goggles, but wasn't the same looking a little tentative and less aggressive. He had only four points in limited action in the second half.

"The thing with MKG that is incredible, and typical, is that he just played through it," Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said. "He's a competitor and he gave us what we had and that was just sure willpower. Pretty incredible."

The Bobcats came in having lost 17 straight games, and the Hornets had lost 12 of their past 13 entering the game.

Charlotte jumped on the visitors early.

The Hornets led by as many as 21 in the second quarter before the Hornets stormed back to tie the game entering the final period behind nine third-quarter points from Greivis Vasquez and seven from Gordon.

New Orleans finally took the lead with 5:47 left when Anderson knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Hornets. Gordon followed with another 3-pointer on the next possession and they'd never give up the lead.

It was a dramatic shift of momentum after the Bobcats dominated the first half. Charlotte shot 64 percent from the field in the first half and took a 57-40 lead at the break, outscoring the Hornets 21-0 on fast breaks and 38-16 in the paint.

"We stopped being as aggressive in the second half as the first," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "We weren't attacking."

As for the losing streak, Dunlap said "eventually we are our own solution. We can't look external."

NOTE: Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap picked up his first technical foul of the season for arguing a call during the third quarter. ... Hakim Warrick had his first double-double for the Bobcats with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

THE FACTS: Eric Gordon scored 24 points off the bench in his season debut and the New Orleans Hornets overcame a 21-point deficit to pick up a 98-95 win over the Charlotte Bobcats Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.

QUOTABLE: "Coach got us at halftime. I told the guys, 'they're going to let us back in it as long as we play defense and score.' That's what we did. It was all about making plays. We've needed that all season. It was good to get a win here for us and for me to get back out there. I just wanted to be back out there with the guys. "

THE STAT: The 3-point shooting was a big key in the Hornets' (7-23) come-from-behind victory. New Orleans was 11-for-24 from the 3-point line and made seven more trifectas than the Bobcats (7-23) did. The Bobcats have allowed opponents to make at least 10 3s in five of their last seven games, and allow the most made 3-pointers in the league with teams averaging 9.7 per game. Charlotte is next to last in 3-point field goal defense in the league, allowing their opponents to shoot 39.2 percent from behind the arc.

TURNING POINT: Points off turnovers. The Bobcats made just three turnovers in the fourth quarter, but each proved costly as New Orleans scored nine points off those three mistakes. Back-to-back turnovers by rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist proved to be the turning point. He traveled with 1:43 left to play which turned into a 3 from Ryan Anderson. He then lost the ball on the next possession, which then led to a 3 from Roger Mason and a six-point Hornets lead with 47.4 left in the game.

QUOTABLE II: "You're never out of it when you play in the NBA. Every time you step out on the court you have a chance to win. Our veterans have been teaching these young guys all year long and tonight they showed them how to win."

HOT: The Bobcats first half offense. Charlotte shot a season-best 62.5 percent from the floor on 25-for-40 shooting and took a 17-point edge into the half. Kidd-Gilchrist had 18 points on 9-for-11 shooting and Kemba Walker was 6-for-8 from the floor with 12 points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Gordon stepped up big in his season debut. He had missed the first 29 games rehabbing a sore knee, and scored a game-best 24 points off the bench tonight. He was 12-for-14 from the charity stripe and scored 16 of those points during the Hornets' second-half rally. In addition to his scoring, Gordon added seven assists and two steals to his tally.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Former Portland Trail Blazers coach, N.C. State star and current Charlotte resident Nate McMillan was in the stands at Time Warner Cable Arena. McMillan's son, Jamelle, is a coaching intern for the Hornets.

GOOD MOVE: Mason scored all 13 of his points in the second half. With the Hornets trailing 57-40 at the break, Williams started Mason, who did not play in the first half, in place of rookie Austin Rivers. Mason was 4-for-5 from behind the arc and added six rebounds and three assists in the second half including a clutch 3-point basket late in the fourth quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Charlotte's Kidd-Gilchrist finished with a team-best 22 points and nine rebounds, while fellow rookie Jeffery Taylor had six points. New Orleans' rookies both had a rough night. Anthony Davis finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots while Rivers played just under 13 minutes and did not register a point, but did have three assists, two steals and a block.

NOTABLE: Kidd-Gilchrist suffered a scratched right cornea in the second quarter, but returned to play in the second half with a pair of goggles. He is expected to play in Charlotte's New Year's Eve game in Chicago. ... The Bobcats are currently on an 18-game skid. Charlotte has had three losing streaks of 16 games or longer this calendar year, including 23-game slide to end the 2011-12 season. ... Hakim Warrick has started each of the last three games and has scored in double figures in all three, averaging 14.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in just under 32 minutes, while shooting 51.6 percent from the field (16-for-31). ... Charlotte's Walker has scored in double figures in 27 of 30 games this season. Hornets forward Anderson has scored in double figures for the 26th time this season and is currently on pace to set the franchise record for made 3-point field goals in a season. Greivis Vasquez scored in double figures for the fifth straight game and added a season-high four steals. Anthony Davis recorded double-figure rebounds for the seventh time this season. Mason scored a season-high 13 points, scoring in double figures for the fifth time this season.
