Pacers-Hawks Preview

To keep their longest win streak of the season going, the Indiana Pacers will have to snap a lengthy skid.

The Pacers have lost in 10 consecutive visits to the Atlanta Hawks and will try to end that drought while seeking a fifth victory in a row Saturday night.

Indiana (17-12) hasn't won in Atlanta since Dec. 22, 2006, but just missed a chance for a victory at Philips Arena in the most recent matchup between the teams Nov. 7. The Pacers led by 14 points early in the fourth quarter but allowed the Hawks to go on an 18-0 run in an 89-86 defeat.

Kyle Korver scored eight of his 13 points during that spurt and Jeff Teague hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:04 remaining to give his team a third consecutive win in the series.

Indiana would appear to have a prime chance to end both of its losing streaks to Atlanta as it heads into this game having allowed an average of 84.8 points during its win streak and 85.0 during a stretch of seven victories in eight contests.

The Pacers, though, also blew a 16-point lead over Phoenix on Friday before coming away with a 97-91 home win. They allowed the Suns to shoot 46.3 percent after limiting their previous seven opponents to a combined 39.4 percent.

"It wasn't pretty in the second half, but we got the job done," coach Frank Vogel said. "We'd like blowouts, but we got the 'W' and found a way to win."

David West helped rescue his team by scoring eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead jumper with 3:17 to play, and George Hill had a team-best 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Hill and West each had 20 points in the loss in Atlanta in November.

Teague, who finished with 15 points in that game, scored a career-high 27 in the Hawks' third straight win Friday, 102-94 in Cleveland. He also hit a go-ahead shot for the second time in as many contests.

His 3-pointer with 2:46 left in the second overtime helped Atlanta (18-9) down Detroit 126-119 in its most recent home game Wednesday and he made an 18-foot jumper with 2:33 left Friday to spark a game-ending 9-0 run.

"I was just being aggressive," Teague said. "Coach (Larry Drew) pulled me aside after (a loss in Philadelphia on Dec. 21) and told me to bring more energy."

Atlanta is seeking a third straight victory at Philips Arena and its 10th in 13 games while Indiana will try to match its season-high three-game road win streak from Nov. 19-30.

Indiana, winners in seven of 10 away from home, is on its longest run since taking seven in a row April 9-19.

West will try to help extend that run while scoring at least 20 points in a third consecutive game against Atlanta. He's made 19 of 31 shots (61.3 percent) in the previous two matchups.

Williams, Horford pace Hawks past Indiana

ATLANTA (AP) Al Horford believes the Atlanta Hawks are starting to tap into their potential.

Even with Josh Smith injured and unable to play, the Hawks still got some important baskets, rebounds and defensive stops from role players in a 109-100 over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night.

"I think it showed growth from our team being in a position where they made a run at us and we needed to score," Horford said. "Guys scored some key points. We got stops when we needed to. That was a game where we got better."

Lou Williams had 21 points and a career-high 12 assists, Horford added 20 points and Atlanta won its fourth straight.

David West scored a game-high 29 points for the Pacers, who had won four in a row and seven of eight.

Smith, Atlanta's leading scorer this season, watched the game from the bench as Zaza Pachulia made his seventh start of the season and responded with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Williams, who signed in the offseason to be the Hawks' sixth man, had his first career double-double. Rookie John Jenkins scored a career-high 10 points, and Ivan Johnson shook off flu-like symptoms to add six points and six rebounds.

Injuries to reserve guards Devin Harris and Anthony Morrow left Atlanta coach Larry Drew with just nine players in his rotation, but Indiana never got closer than three in the fourth quarter after Paul George's three-point play made it 91-88 at the 5:18 mark.

Jeff Teague's floating runner made it 101-90 less than 3 minutes later. Teague scored 10 of his 15 points in the final period.

"From a production standpoint, everybody gave a little something," Drew said. "We did what we had to do, particularly on the defensive end. We had to make a lot of adjustments as the game went on to try to keep them off-balance a little bit."

Pachulia and Horford combined to hold Pacers center Roy Hibbert to no points, one rebound and one blocked shot in 20-plus minutes. Hibbert was such a non-factor that Indiana coach Frank Vogel kept him on the bench in the fourth quarter.

"I love the kid," Vogel said. "He has great heart, gave great effort. He didn't have it tonight."

West gave Atlanta fits for much of the game, twice hitting 3-pointers at the shot-clock buzzer, but his offensive movement away from the ball opened up chances for teammates and helped him find good looks to score 11 points in the fourth.

"We knew David West had it going," Teague said, "so we just had to try to do our best to let him see a double-team and a wall, and we got some big stops."

George finished with 18 points and George Hill added 15 for Indiana. Hill started and played 33 minutes despite a sore right groin.

West liked the Pacers' chances before the game with Smith, Harris and Morrow unable to play. It just didn't work out the way he had hoped.

"Even though we had it close, they controlled the game from start to finish," West said. "They were locked in offensively. We just couldn't put up a big enough fight to slow them down."

Kyle Korver scored five points in a single possession late in the third to push the lead to 12 points.

After officials watched a video replay, the call was upheld that Lance Stephenson committed a flagrant foul on Korver, pushing him to the floor on a play away from the ball. Korver hit both free throws and then a 3-pointer at the 4:10 mark to make it 77-65.

"He purposely ran at me," Korver said. "I saw him coming. I knew he was going to hit me like that. I just took it, you know? But he put a shoulder into my chest."

The Hawks' lead swelled to 18 with 2:12 remaining in the third on Johnson's putback.

Horford, who played 37 minutes despite a right hip contusion, hit a 17-footer to make it 93-88 with 5:02 remaining.

Indiana never led after Korver's 3-pointer made it 18-16 at the 4:13 mark of the first.

THE FACTS: Beating the Indiana Pacers without Josh Smith was going to be tough for the Atlanta Hawks.

Then, again, beating the Hawks in Atlanta has been almost impossible for the Indiana Pacers.

On Saturday night at Philips Arena the shorthanded Hawks came out firing then kept the Pacers at bay, winning, 109-100. The win was Atlanta's fourth straight and the 11th straight over Indiana at Philips Arena.

Lou Williams led the Hawks putting together his first career double-double, with 21 points and a career-high 11 assists, while Al Horford added 20 points for the Hawks, who saw all five starters score at least 15 points and had six players score in double-figures.

David West had a game-high 29 for Indiana, which saw its four-game winning streak halted.

Atlanta made a statement early, shooting 67 percent (14-for-21), 60 percent from three (3-for-5) in the first quarter to take a 33-26 lead out of the frame. Williams' 3-pointer with 3:39 to play, broke an 18-18 tie and kicked off an 11-2 run. The Hawks would never look back, leading by as much as 18 in the third quarter. The Hawks shot 55 percent for the game, and 50 percent from three in scoring an opponents' season-high on the Pacers.

Indy, which shot 47.5 percent (33.3 from three) hung around thanks to West, cutting the lead to 91-88 with 5:02 remaining. But Atlanta went scored the next six points, as Jeff Teague took over.

Teague, who had a career-high 27 on Friday, scored eight of his 16 points over the next 3:30, adding an assist, a rebound, and a steal, outscoring the Pacers, 8-7 and keying Atlanta's 11-2 game-sealing run.

Zaza Pachulia, who drew the assignment of playing Pacers center Roy Hibbert, also had a double-double, his second of the year, with 17 points, and 14 rebounds, five on the offensive end → both game-highs. He also helped Atlanta's bigs shut out the 7-2 Hibbert, who was 0-for-2.

QUOTABLE: "I think guys made shots early. We had the ball flying around and I just think we got off to a great start. Guys were just making shots for me and it happened."

THE STAT: 75.0/57.1 percent: Kyle Korver's 3-point shooting percentage and field goal percentage over the last 53:14 seconds against Indiana. Korver scored 16 points on 5-for-10 shooting, 4-of-5 from three, Saturday night. if you include the final 5:14 of the Nov. 7th meeting at Philips, when he shot 3-for-4 and 2-for-3 from downtown to spark Atlanta's game-closing 18-0 rally to overcome a 14-point deficit, Korver has hit six of his last eight three-point attempts and eight of his last 14 shots.

TURNING POINT: With 4:40 remaining and Indiana hot on Atlanta's heels, trailing 93-88, the Pacers won a jump ball between Al Horford and George Hill but could not convert. On the ensuing Atlanta possession, the Hawks' pressure on the offensive boards led to a pair of offensive rebounds, extending their possession. The second offensive rebound by Pachulia eventually led to a pair of Jeff Teague foul shots and a seven-point lead.

HOT: Horford was zoned in Saturday night, shooting 10-for-13 on the night. Horford set the tone early, hitting his first six shots of the game, including all five first-quarter attempts, then, in each proceeding quarter missed only one shot, shooting 2-for-3 in the second and fourth and 1-for-2 in the third. He's converted two-thirds of his shots (34-for-51, 66.7 percent) over his last four games.

HOT, TOO: Pacers forward David West continued his recent hot shooting. West shot 61.1 percent Saturday night (11-for-18), hitting at least 50 percent of his field goals for the third time in four games. After missing two of his first three attempts, in the game's first 92 seconds, West heated up, hitting 11 of his final 16, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, his first two 3-point field goals of the season.

NOT: Pacers guard Gerald Green didn't fare so well. Green shot 3-for-11 and was 0-for-4 from three. He never got into a rhythm, shooting 1-for-2 in the first quarter, 1-for-3 in the second, 0-for-2 in the third and 1-for-4 in the fourth. Green had brought a hot hand into Atlanta, hitting at a 58.3 percent clip (14-for-24) and 57.1 from three (8-for-14) over his previous three games.

ROOKIE WATCH: Hawks first-round pick John Jenkins made a major impact off the bench Saturday night, scoring 10 points for his first career double-digit game, on 4-for-6 shooting, 2-for-2 from three. He also played a huge part in Atlanta's big first-quarter. Entering the game with 3:58 left and Atlanta leading 18-16, he hit two field goals 47 seconds apart, accounting for five points in the Hawks' 11-2 run that broke open a tie game.

GOOD MOVE: Hawks coach Larry Drew got very good use out of reserve bigs Pachulia, Johan Petro and Ivan Johnson in helping Horford battle Hibbert. Pachulia had 17 points, including six straight over a 71-second stretch of the second quarter, helping Atlanta blow out to a nine-point lead. He also was huge on the boards with his 14 rebounds. Petro, who had played only 4:45 over the previous five games, not seeing the court at all in four of those games, gave Atlanta a boost with four points and solid defensive play in keeping Hibbert scoreless. Johnson added six points and six rebounds, three on each end and, his usual energy.

NOTABLE: Indiana guard Sam Young (flu) did not accompany the Pacers to Atlanta...Williams' previous high in assists was nine. He got No. 10 on Korver's three with 4:10 left in the third quarter...Atlanta tied a season-high with its six double-figure scorers...The 109 points allowed were the most this season by Indiana...West scored in double-digits for the 21st straight game...Atlanta is red-hot from downtown, as they're shooting 44.2 percent over the last three games, having made at least 10 threes in each of those games.
