Despite winning his third MVP last season, LeBron James may be even better this year.

With fellow superstar Dwyane Wade sidelined by a suspension, the Miami Heat will again look to James as they seek a seventh straight victory Friday night against a Detroit Pistons team they've dominated recently.

Wade was suspended by the NBA for one game on Thursday without pay - the first suspension of his career - for flailing his leg and making contact with Ramon Sessions' groin in the Heat's 105-92 win at Charlotte on Wednesday, the opener of a four-game road trip. Sessions, who believed the kick was intentional, was actually whistled for a foul on the play.

Wade's 20.2 scoring average is his lowest since his rookie season, but Wednesday was one of his better games as he scored 29 on 10-of-19 shooting with nine rebounds and five assists. James tallied 27 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists as the duo helped Miami improve to 20-6, its best 26-game record in franchise history.

James' 25.8 points per game during the Heat's winning streak doesn't deviate much from his 25.6 season average, but his rebound and assist averages are up to 10.8 and 9.0, respectively, from 8.7 and 6.9. He may need to shoulder an even larger scoring burden without Wade and possibly Ray Allen, who remains questionable with a shoulder injury. Allen sat out Wednesday with a sore right shoulder, which he injured in a win against Oklahoma City on Christmas.

Allen is averaging 11.7 ppg, and his absence would leave the Heat without two of their top four scorers as they try for a season-high third straight road win. Miami is 14-2 at home but just 6-4 away from AmericanAirlines Arena.

The Heat were also significantly better at home last season (28-5) compared to on the road (18-15) in the regular season before winning the NBA Finals.

"We want to have a bunker mentality and a road warrior mentality when we hit the road," James said. "We understand to this point we haven't played great basketball on the road."

Miami almost always plays great basketball against the Pistons, winning seven straight and 12 of the last 13 meetings. The Heat also have won seven in row in Detroit since a 93-90 loss on Feb. 4, 2009.

Despite owning one of the league's worst records, the Pistons (9-22) are only being outscored by 2.2 points per game.

They took a now 17-9 Atlanta squad to double overtime on Wednesday as Will Bynum scored 31 - one shy of his career high - as Detroit failed to win a season-best third in a row.

"You have to take the positives out of that," Bynum told the team's official website. "If not, there's nothing to go forward on. We've got to take the positives from last night and keep trying to build off of them."

Forward Tayshaun Prince's status was uncertain for Wednesday because of a sprained right ankle but he finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) LeBron James and the short-handed Heat were no match for Detroit's brilliant bench.

Will Bynum had 25 points and 10 assists, leading another spirited performance by the Pistons' reserves, and Detroit beat Miami 109-99 on Friday night despite 35 points by James.

Miami was without Dwyane Wade, suspended for a game by the NBA for flailing his leg and making contact with a Charlotte player Wednesday.

The Detroit reserves, who scored 85 points in a loss to Atlanta on Wednesday, contributed 64 this time. Charlie Villanueva had 18 points and Austin Daye added 11, helping the Pistons snap Miami's six-game winning streak.

"Their bench came in and turned it up about 17 notches. We let them get into a comfort zone in the second quarter, and after that, they were making all kinds of contested shots," James said. "It's hard to make any kind of run when a team keeps doing that to you."

The Heat scored the game's first 10 points and led by 15 after one quarter, but the momentum shifted for good when the Pistons outscored Miami 41-20 in the second.

Chris Bosh had 28 points for the Heat.

Miami had cut a 17-point deficit to four early in the fourth, but Detroit's reserves steadied themselves. Rookie big man Andre Drummond scored inside, Villanueva scored after a turnover by James, and a 3-pointer by Bynum pushed the lead back to double digits at 88-77.

"That little split of doubt that you can have - it's a turnover, it's a missed shot, it's a bad play," Bynum said. "You just have to be aggressive and confident."

That's rarely a problem for Bynum, who looks out of control at times but can lift his team with his energy. He's played in only 22 of Detroit's 32 games this season, but he scored 31 points Wednesday and followed it up with another remarkable performance against the Heat.

"Will kind of got squeezed in the rotation," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. "Had several DNPs, stayed the course, and he deserves all the credit."

Detroit led 95-84 after Villanueva corralled a wild pass from Bynum and made a 3-pointer. Daye added a dunk in transition off a slick drop pass from Bynum for a 101-90 lead.

Bynum scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.

"He was amazing," James said. "He controlled the game with his motor and his offense. He was hitting everything and he was getting everyone else involved. We couldn't do anything with him."

The Pistons shot 58 percent from the field to Miami's 51. The Heat had been 31-0 since the beginning of last season when shooting at least 50 percent.

The Heat said before the game they didn't agree with Wade's suspension for making contact with Charlotte's Ramon Sessions earlier in the week.

"That's no excuse. We still had enough," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Obviously, we're a different team with Dwyane, but we have enough depth that we should be able to overcome missing one guy for a night."

Miami breezed through the first quarter, taking a 10-0 lead and eventually making 11 of its first 14 shots. It was 32-17 after one, but the game turned almost immediately.

Detroit's bench was again outstanding. The Pistons scored the first 14 points of the second and finally took a 41-39 lead on Villanueva's 3-pointer.

The bench - specifically Villanueva, Bynum, Drummond and Daye - scored 36 of Detroit's 41 points in the quarter, and the Pistons went into halftime with a 58-52 lead.

And that was only the beginning. Miami didn't start the third quarter any better than the second, allowing nine straight points. Greg Monroe's basket made it 76-59, and although the Heat increased the pressure defensively, they didn't always get the results they wanted.

After Shane Battier and James made consecutive 3-pointers to pull Miami within nine, James thought he'd knocked the ball away from Jason Maxiell cleanly near midcourt. But a foul was called and Maxiell made one of two free throws to make it 79-69.

It was 81-71 after three.

NOTES: Udonis Haslem is now Miami's career leader with 620 games played, snapping a tie with Wade because of the suspension. Haslem appeared to hurt his right shoulder early on when landing hard after an acrobatic block on Kyle Singler, but he was able to play on. ... Drummond had 10 points and 10 rebounds. ... James and Bosh were the only Miami players to score in double figures.

THE FACTS: Second-string guard Will Bynum had 25 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, as the Detroit Pistons snapped the Miami Heat's six-game winning streak with a 109-99 upset at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Friday night. Bynum added 10 assists and Charlie Villanueva contributed 18 points for the Pistons (10-22), who got 64 of their points from their reserves. LeBron James had 35 points and Chris Bosh scored 28 for Miami (20-7), which played without Dwyane Wade. The NBA suspended Wade for one game on Thursday for flailing his leg and making contact with the groin area of Charlotte's Ramon Sessions Wednesday.

QUOTABLE: "I have a consistent routine. I'm constantly working and believing in myself. I work my tail off all summer and sacrifice a lot for this game and it's just paying off."

THE STAT: 18. James had a personal winning streak of 18 games against the Pistons snapped, dating back to his last two seasons with Cleveland. It began with the last three regular-season meetings between Detroit and Cleveland in 2008-09, followed by a four-game Cavaliers' sweep in the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Cleveland swept all four regular-season meetings the following season and Miami had gone 7-0 against the Pistons since James joined them.

TURNING POINT: Detroit's bench players turned everything around after Miami scored the first 10 points of the game and led by 15 after one quarter. They sparked a 14-0 run to start the second quarter and the Pistons wound up scoring 41 points in the quarter, a season high. The Pistons made eight 3-pointers, including three by Villanueva, while taking a 58-52 halftime lead.

QUOTABLE II: "We're a team that wants to be whole every night we go out there. A big part of the team was missing, but guys have to step up. We didn't have enough tonight defensively."

HOT: Detroit's bench carried the team back from a 22-point deficit in a double-overtime loss to Atlanta on Wednesday, scoring 85 points. The reserve corps kept pouring in the points Friday, scoring 36 in the second quarter alone. They added 24 in the fourth quarter to close out the game.

NOT: Miami's backcourt trio of Mario Chalmers, Mike Miller and Ray Allen combined for 18 points on 6-for-25 shooting and also made four turnovers. Miller started in place of Wade, while Allen played 29 minutes after missing the game against Charlotte with a shoulder injury.

ROOKIE WATCH: The Pistons got double-digit performances from both of the rookies that played. Andre Drummond recorded his fifth double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Kyle Singler had 12 points and five rebounds.

NOTABLE: Miami had won seven straight against Detroit. ... The Heat lost for the first time in 32 games over the last two seasons while shooting 50 percent or better. Miami went 50.6 percent from the field. ... Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince had four assists, giving him 2,000 for his career. ... The Pistons started a five-game homestand, their longest this season, while Miami is on a four-game road swing. ... Miami allowed 100 points for the first time in 10 games. ...
