The struggling Dallas Mavericks' backcourt is in flux and they have added a veteran with a championship pedigree to try to help stabilize it.

Derek Fisher is expected to make his debut with the club Saturday night when the Mavericks host the Detroit Pistons trying to avoid their first four-game skid.

Fisher took part in his first practice with Dallas (7-9) on Friday after signing earlier in the week. The 38-year-old has not played since Game 5 of the NBA finals for Oklahoma City.

"I've been working hard, just keeping myself ready for this moment, not really knowing where it would be," Fisher said. "Just to be back out here with a group of guys with everybody working hard is good."

Starting point guard Darren Collison is questionable for Saturday's game after sitting out Wednesday's 101-78 defeat at Chicago because of a sprained right middle finger. Third-year guard Dominique Jones has started the last two games.

Coach Rick Carlisle believes Fisher's experience of 16 seasons in the league - and earning five championships rings - can help Collison.

"We got a great situation with him and Collison, because we got two great players," Carlisle said. "Darren's still one of our best players and I've made that clear to him. I see him as a guy that's still developing and I can't imagine a better situation for a young point guard than being at practice every day with Derek Fisher."

The Mavericks have hit hard times as losers of eight of 11, including two blowout defeats during this slide. This contest precedes a stretch of six of seven games on the road.

"We've got to show a collective caring for one another and a collective toughness," Carlisle said. "We're entering a really difficult stretch of our schedule. Nothing's going to be easy. We've got to embrace that challenge."

Top scorer O.J. Mayo is averaging 19.8 points, but he's only given the team 9.3 per game on 32.4 percent shooting during this losing streak.

With Mayo slumping, it's unclear how the Mavericks can get an offense averaging 88.3 points on 39.0 percent shooting in this slide untracked. Chris Kaman is the team's second-leading scorer, but the 7-footer is averaging 11.3 points on 38.5 percent shooting in this woeful stretch.

Dallas has won its last four at home over Detroit (5-12), which fell to 1-9 on the road with Friday's 90-78 loss to Memphis.

The Pistons shot 52.6 percent in consecutive home victories before finishing at 40.3 percent with their second-lowest point total of the season against the Grizzlies.

Greg Monroe scored 17 points to go along with a career-high seven of the season-worst 22 turnovers by the Pistons.

"Unforced turnovers and unforced errors," said guard Brandon Knight, who had a season-high six miscues. "We gave them a lot of easy baskets."

Detroit was also let down by poor production from its guards. The starting backcourt of Knight and rookie Kyle Singler combined for 19 points on 6-of-16 shooting while reserve Rodney Stuckey made 3 of 11 shots for six points.

The Pistons have lost 27 of their last 28 road games against Western Conference foes.

Mayo breaks slump, leads Mavs past Pistons, 92-77

DALLAS (AP) Hoping to shake off a week's worth of bad games, O.J. Mayo took a pass in transition and headed straight for the rim.

The resulting three-point play jolted the guard out of a shooting slump late in the first half, and he dominated the third quarter on his way to 27 points, helping Dallas celebrate Derek Fisher's Mavericks debut with a 92-77 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night.

Mayo's transition bucket got the Mavs' offense running again, and he fed off the pace by hitting four 3-pointers while scoring 16 points during a 17-4 run that stretched into a 25-6 surge and erased a nine-point Detroit lead in the third quarter.

"I passed up some open shots in the second quarter, came into the locker room, said, `Just go out there and play your game,"' said Mayo, who was 10 of 21 overall and 6 of 9 from long distance. "So I just went out there, started shooting and tried to be aggressive."

Brandon Knight led Detroit with 20 points, including 18 in the first half. But the Pistons still fell to 1-10 on the road.

Mayo, who shot 32 percent and made just one of 10 from 3-point range the previous three games, scored the first 11 Dallas points in the third quarter, including a trio of 3s punctuated by a timeout as disgusted Detroit coach Lawrence Frank stomped onto the court well before the whistle even blew.

The Mayo surge started on defense for Dallas, which held the Pistons to 20 percent shooting while outscoring them 25-11 in the third quarter.

"Well, guys, did you see the type of shots we were getting?" Frank said. "We missed 29 shots within two feet of the basket. So, the problem is, we've got the make those shots. Then the next thing is we've got to get back."

Fisher got the start a day after the 16-year veteran's first practice with the Mavs. His presence seemed to spark Darren Collison, the struggling young point guard he was brought in to help. Collison had eight assists and no turnovers.

"He enhances our situation a lot of different ways," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "He gives us more options, and his experience, you just can't substitute what that means."

Fisher's stat line was modest - two points on 1-of-8 shooting and three assists - in his first action since helping Oklahoma City reach the NBA Finals last year. But Collison looked much better. He hit a 3-pointer when the Mavericks were struggling in the first half, and assisted on dunks by Bernard James and Shawn Marion in the second half.

Collison, who missed a game with a sprained finger, said he wasn't thrilled to be coming off the bench after starting the first 14 games but would "do what I can for the team."

"The biggest stat is that we won the game and that's all I'm happy about," Collison said.

Once Mayo gave the Mavericks the lead, Vince Carter and Elton Brand made sure they held onto it. Carter hit four 3-pointers - three after halftime - for all 12 of his points, while Brand matched his season highs with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Brand had eight points in the fourth quarter, when Dallas had another 13-0 run to put the game away.

Knight scored five more points than his average just in the first half. He hit a 3-pointer that started a 9-0 run for a 38-30 Detroit lead midway through the second quarter. But he missed all six of his shots in the second half, when the Pistons shot 28 percent.

Center Greg Monroe was 4 of 17 from the field, and Dallas blocked nine shots - four by Brand and three from Chris Kaman.

"I'm not a jump shooter, so it feels even worse when shots are not falling because I know all of them are relatively close to the basket," Monroe said. "There's no excuse for that. I have to finish."

Kaman led the Mavericks with 10 points in the first half despite going to the bench with 5:54 left in the second after his third foul.

NOTES: The Mavericks play six of their next seven on the road. ... Carlisle started his head coaching career with the Pistons and was there for two seasons. He was NBA Coach of the Year the first season (2001-02) and led Detroit to the Eastern Conference finals in 2003. ... Mayo is the only Dallas player to start every game. A season ago, he was a reserve for all 66 games with Memphis. ... Monroe and Jason Maxiell combined for 27 rebounds for Detroit.

THE FACTS: O.J. Mayo had a big third quarter, Elton Brand had his best game as a Maverick and Dallas overwhelmed the Detroit Pistons in the second half Saturday for a 92-77 victory at the American Airlines Center. Mayo outscored the Pistons 16-11 in the third and finished with a game-high 27 points and Brand tallied 17 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Vince Carter added 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from behind the arc as the Mavericks (8-9) snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Pistons (5-13) were held to 29 points on 27.5 percent shooting in the second half and dropped to 1-10 on the road. Brandon Knight led Detroit with 20 points, but only two came after halftime. Tayshaun Prince and Kyle Singler each scored 12 points and Jason Maxiell had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Detroit was outscored 50-34 in the paint and 35-13 in fastbreak points. The Pistons committed 13 of their 16 turnovers in the second half.

QUOTABLE: "I had the opportunity to get out there, get some minutes and get in the flow. Once we get back [on defense], we are good. O.J. had the opportunity to hit some open 3s, that gives Darren [Collison] the opportunity to penetrate and [Shawn] Marion the ability to hit his floaters. We are off and running after we get stops."

THE STAT: Detroit scored a season-low 11 points in the third quarter and shot 20 percent (4-for-20) from the field.

TURNING POINT: Mayo scored 16 of the Mavericks' first 17 points in the third quarter as Dallas turned a nine-point deficit into a 59-55 lead. The Mavericks never trailed again.

HOT: After going 2-for-10 from 3-point range in the first half, the Mavericks were 6-for-7 during the third quarter. Mayo was 4-for-5 and Carter drained both of his attempts.

NOT: Greg Monroe missed 10 of his first 11 shots and finished with eight points on 4-for-17 shooting. He grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Signed on Thursday, veteran point guard Derek Fisher started and scored two points in 24 minutes in his Dallas debut. The 38-year-old looked rusty on offense and looked lost at times on defensive rotations, finishing 1-for-8 from the field with three assists and three turnovers. The longtime Laker and five-time NBA champion got his first points as a Maverick without the ball going through the basket, thanks to a goaltending violation by Singler at the 6:53 mark of the first quarter.

INSIDE THE ARENA: For the eighth year, the Mavericks hosted the "Seats for Soldiers" event in which season ticket holders donate their courtside seats to wounded soldiers from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Actor Gary Sinise greeted the service members as they took their seats. Dallas has a 7-1 record in these games.

ROOKIE WATCH: Mavericks forward Jae Crowder had a tough shooting night (1-for-8), finishing with four points, four rebounds and three steals.

NOTABLE: It was Fisher's first start since March 14, his last game as a Laker before being traded to Oklahoma City. ... Carlisle coached the Pistons for two seasons (2001-02 and 2002-03). ... Dallas plays six of its next seven on the road. ... Detroit has lost five straight in Dallas. ... The Pistons have lost 28 of their last 29 road games against Western Conference opponents. ...
