Knicks-Grizzlies Preview

The New York Knicks remain the league's only undefeated team.

If they want to keep it that way, they'll have to snap the Memphis Grizzlies' 14-game regular-season home winning streak.

New York will look to continue its best start in 19 seasons Friday night when the Grizzlies try to extend their best-ever start with a seventh consecutive victory.

Down by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter on Thursday, the Knicks (6-0) closed on a 27-11 run to defeat San Antonio 104-100. It was the most points New York had given up this season, and it was its first win by fewer than 10 points, but a victory over a top opponent was all that counted.

"It shows me this team is for real," coach Mike Woodson said.

The Knicks, who are off to their best start since the 1993-94 team opened 7-0 en route to an NBA finals appearances, have a chance to go 4-0 on the road for the first time since 1996-97. The Grizzlies (6-1), though, are 3-0 at home for the first time and undefeated at FedExForum in regular-season play since a 114-110 overtime loss to Toronto on March 16.

Perfect since a 101-92 season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis is coming off back-to-back victories over last season's NBA finalists. The host Grizzlies defeated Miami 104-86 on Sunday, then won 107-97 at Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

"(The Thunder are) one of the best teams in the West," said Memphis forward Zach Randolph, who posted his seventh consecutive double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. "We're trying to get where they're at."

The league is investigating a reported hallway altercation between Randolph, the NBA rebounding leader (14.0 per game), and Thunder center Kendrick Perkins, who were both ejected late in Wednesday's game, so it's uncertain if that will keep the Grizzlies' big man out of the lineup.

Randolph (16.7 points per game), center Marc Gasol (14.1) and Rudy Gay (20.7) have helped Memphis rank among the league's best with 46.0 points per game in the paint.

Point guard Mike Conley is off to a decent start from beyond the arc (9 for 25), but the Grizzlies' best 3-point shooters are reserves - Wayne Ellington (11 for 24), Jerryd Bayless (10 for 18) and Quincy Pondexter (10 for 22).

No one in the league has been better from long range than Knicks guard J.R. Smith, who is 14 for 19 while scoring a career-best 18.0 points per game. He hit his only attempt Thursday while finishing with 17 points.

New York made 11 for 25 from 3-point range in the victory - four from Jason Kidd and two apiece from Rasheed Wallace and Raymond Felton, who had a season-best 25 points with seven assists.

The Knicks are averaging a league-high 11.8 3s.

Knicks leading scorer Carmelo Anthony (23.8 ppg) finished with a season-low nine at San Antonio, but he's enjoyed some recent success in Memphis. Anthony averaged 31.8 points in his previous five games at FedExForum before finishing with 14 in a 94-83 loss Jan. 12 when he left in the third quarter with a sprained right ankle.

These teams have alternated wins in their last seven games at Memphis.

Gay has scored at least 20 points in all seven career starts against the Knicks.

Grizzlies hand Knicks first loss, 105-95

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies ended the New York Knicks' unbeaten start and put themselves on top of the NBA standings.

Zach Randolph had 20 points and 15 rebounds, Marc Gasol added 24 points and Memphis handed the Knicks their first loss of the season with a 105-95 victory on Friday night. At 7-1, the Grizzlies own the league's best record for the first time in franchise history.

"Sounds good," Memphis guard Mike Conley said. "I think we are playing well right now, obviously. We have played some very good teams in the past week. (We) are just going to try and keep it going."

With the 10-point win, the Grizzlies defeated the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder - last season's NBA finalists - and the previously undefeated Knicks by double digits this week.

Rudy Gay scored 17 points and blocked four shots, and Conley added 16 points and eight assists as Memphis won its seventh straight.

"The confidence is something that we have always had," Gay said. "I don't think it is (any) different as what we always have been. We are just playing basketball. We are getting better, that's all it is.

"We are just doing it at a higher level."

Carmelo Anthony scored 20 points for New York, which was trying to start 7-0 for the first time since the 1993-94 team that reached the NBA Finals. Raymond Felton scored 18 points and handed out five assists. Rasheed Wallace scored 13 points, shooting 6 of 10.

The game got away from New York in the third quarter, when the Knicks seemed to lose their composure during a Memphis rally, and complained about calls and drew technical fouls, including one on Knicks coach Mike Woodson.

"Our guys are competitive They want to win," Woodson said. "We are on a six-game winning streak. We didn't want that streak to break. But it did, so we have to start a new streak."

The Knicks shot 51 percent for the game, but Memphis had 12 offensive rebounds, leading to a 22-12 advantage in second-chance points.

Memphis led by as many as 21 in the third quarter and still held a 19-point lead in the early stages of the final period.

The Knicks answered with a 12-3 rally and appeared poised to make a comeback reminiscent of Thursday night's win at San Antonio, when New York outscored the Spurs 27-11 in the final 7:14 for a 104-100 victory.

But New York never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

The game started getting testy in the second quarter as the Grizzlies' Jerryd Bayless and New York's J.R. Smith got into it, earning double technicals. Gay got a tech when he disagreed with a no-call on a dunk attempt.

And through all that, Wallace was mouthing with everyone from the Grizzlies bench to the officials to the fans.

"That's part of my game," Wallace said. "I like to talk trash. That's what I do. But the thing about it is, I talk trash, and I can back it up. Then I like to have fun with the fans. They're jabbing at me, so I like to throw jabs at them. It's all in fun though."

Memphis led 54-49 at the break, both teams shooting well. The Knicks hit at a 57 percent clip, while Memphis connected on 54 percent. Conley had 13 for Memphis, while Anthony had 14 for the Knicks.

Wallace already had matched his season high with 10 points before intermission.

Memphis opened the second half with a 23-7 spurt. Gasol had eight in the run, and the Knicks continued picking up technical fouls.

The Grizzlies' rally built the advantage to 77-56 when Tony Allen converted a three-point play after Smith was called for a flagrant foul on Allen's drive. That was just one of the things that caused the Knicks play to go awry in the period.

"There in the third quarter, we tried to do it individually instead of just moving the ball," guard Jason Kidd said. "Guys got great looks and they didn't go in. .Emotion is part of the game. For the whole team, this is a test we can learn from."

New York cut into the margin slightly, but Memphis still carried an 85-67 lead into the fourth after outscoring the Knicks 31-18 in the period.

The Knicks started a comeback to open the fourth period, outscoring Memphis 12-3 in the early stages of the period.

That got New York within 91-81 with 6:18 left on Felton's jumper in the lane.

"The third quarter got away from us," Anthony said. "Techs, they made some shots. We missed some shots. They got the momentum, kind of slowed the game down. We made a run and cut it to eight, but they already had the momentum going, so we were just in an uphill battle from there."

But several Knick players noted that the battle and the roughhouse game is just the first round of the series between the two teams.

"One thing we're saying," Wallace said, "They've got to come to the Garden."

NOTES: Memphis has won 15 straight regular-season home games. Memphis' last loss during the regular season at home was last March 16 to Toronto in overtime. . Smith came into the game leading the league in 3-point shooting on 14 of 19. He ended the night 0 for 3 from outside the arc. . The Knicks finished their three-game road trip at 2-1. . Wallace's 13 points and 24 minutes were season highs in both categories.

THE FACTS: It still may not roll off the tongue that easily but the Memphis Grizzlies are owners of the NBA's best record. That's right. After yet another impressive win Friday night, this time over a previously undefeated New York Knicks team, 105-95, the Grizzlies lead the NBA with a 7-1 record and are riding a seven-game winning streak. The Grizzlies did damage with their superior frontline, as center Marc Gasol scored a game-high 24 points and forward Zach Randolph added 20 with 16 rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "We're trying to make a statement that we can play with anybody on a given night. We have a very deep team and guys play very hard. We just try to play our grit and grind style of basketball and if we're good enough to win, we will."

THE STAT: The Knicks came into the game allowing just 39.3 points in the second half. Because of that, they appeared to be in good shape when they trailed Memphis 54-49 at the half. But the Grizzlies went on a scoring binge in the third quarter, outscoring the Knicks 31-18. They led by as many at 21 in the quarter and went on to score 51 second half points.

TURNING POINT: Despite being down by 21 in the third, the Knicks battled back and looked as if they were going to pull off a second straight fourth quarter comeback. But after cutting the Grizzlies' lead to 93-85 with 4:42 to go, the Grizzlies got a basket by Randolph, followed by a deep 3-pointer by Rudy Gay to push the lead back to 98-85.

QUOTABLE II: "We lost by 10, but we gave it a hard effort. We just have to go back to the drawing board. They played a good game. Hats off to the Grizzlies, but I just have to say one thing -- they need to come to the (Madison Square) Garden."

HOT: Going against the Knicks small-ball lineup, the Grizzlies used their post play to get the Knicks' bigs in foul trouble. Tyson Chandler, Carmelo Anthony and Wallace all were in foul trouble in the second half, finishing with five fouls. That allowed Gasol and Randolph to combine on 13-for-21 shooting for 44 points.

NOT: A night after knocking down 11 3-pointers that helped the Knicks erase a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to beat San Antonio, 104-100, they made just five 3's against the Grizzlies. The Knicks shot just 26 percent from long range, missing 14 of their 19 attempts.

NOTABLE: The win extended the Grizzlies regular season home winning streak to 15 games. Their last regular season loss at FedExForum was on March 16, 2012 against Toronto in overtime. ... The Knicks were off to their best start since the 1993-94 season. ... In the span of six days, the Grizzlies have beaten last year's two NBA finalists in Miami and Oklahoma City, and previously unbeaten New York, all by double digits. Now they travel to Charlotte to take on the 4-3 Bobcats before returning to Memphis for a five-game homestand. ... The Knicks were whistled for four technical fouls, three of them in the second half when the game started falling apart. ... Anthony led the Knicks with 20 points while Raymond Felton added 18.
