Mavericks-Lakers Preview

Disappointing playoff outcomes led the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks to retool their rosters in hopes of again rising to the top of the Western Conference.

Each team, though, surrounded its long-standing - yet ailing - superstar in different manners.

Kobe Bryant expects to play but Dirk Nowitzki won't as these new-look squads open their seasons Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

The Lakers were bounced in five games in the second round of last season's playoffs by Oklahoma City, the eventual West champion that swept Dallas out of the postseason the previous round.

Bryant averaged 27.9 points in the regular season for the Lakers (41-25) - finishing one-tenth of a point behind scoring leader Kevin Durant - but he was critical of teammate Pau Gasol in the postseason and seemed to have the desire for more help.

General manager Mitch Kupchak made a pair of big offseason acquisitions, getting two-time MVP Steve Nash in a sign-and-trade deal with Phoenix before parting with Andrew Bynum - among others - in a blockbuster four-team trade to land Dwight Howard.

With Bryant, Gasol, Nash, Howard and Metta World Peace, the Lakers seemingly have one of the most formidable starting lineups in the NBA supported by a bench that includes acquisitions Chris Duhon and Antawn Jamison.

"Everybody on the starting five has led their own team and been the go-to guy, the best player on a team," World Peace said. "We've all been the man somewhere else, and now we're together. It's unbelievable. They're all rock stars, but everybody has a great attitude. It's a great time, great time for us."

Howard is recovering from offseason back surgery but is expected to play in the opener, while Bryant was a question mark with a bruised and strained right foot until pronouncing himself ready to go after fully participating in Tuesday's shootaround.

"If it's not going to get worse, it's one of those injuries you can play through and heal as you play," Bryant told the Lakers' official website. "If it gets worse, you can't go."

Bryant also is aware Los Angeles must develop some chemistry before being labeled as a serious contender, evidenced by the club's 0-8 preseason record. No team has ever reached the NBA finals after a winless preseason.

"We're going to be a really good team, but we've got a lot of work in front of us right now," Bryant said. "We're not close to a finished product, and the teams that we want to compete with have all had their main groups together longer.

"We've got to keep improving every day, every week, and learning how to play together."

Dallas may have a more difficult time adjusting with its eight newcomers, especially with Nowitzki missing at least the first 10 games after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

The Mavericks (36-30) courted Dallas native Deron Williams in the offseason and may also have inquired about Howard, who reportedly listed the Mavericks as one of his preferred destinations during his saga with Orlando.

Dallas, though, struck out on each and opted to acquire a multitude of players, including Chris Kaman, Elton Brand, O.J. Mayo, Darren Collison, Dahntay Jones and Eddy Curry.

"We had some big fish available and we didn't get them. So you can do either of two things - blow the whole thing up and start over, or keep signing guys to short contracts to stay a player in the free agent market the following year," Nowitzki said. "For basically saying we still want to be a player next summer, we still put a decent product out there. We're going to compete and see what happens."

The start of the new season likely won't be easy, though, as Dallas also will have to contend with injuries other than Nowitzki's. Kaman is nursing a strained right calf and won't play in at least the opener, forcing Curry - who has played 24 games over the last four years - into a starting role.

The Mavericks waived point guard Delonte West on Monday after he was suspended twice in less than two weeks for conduct detrimental to the team, and Jason Terry also bolted for Boston in free agency.

"This is what we got. That's the way it is," forward Shawn Marion said. "We can't harp on it all day. We'll do what we gotta do."

The Lakers won all four meetings with the Mavericks last season.

Dallas stuns loaded Lakers in opener, 99-91

LOS ANGELES (AP) Dwight Howard missed a two-handed dunk on his first shot, and the night never got much better for the Los Angeles Lakers.

When Howard and Steve Nash took their places alongside Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol under the Hollywood spotlight, the Lakers opened a season of enormous expectations with an equally big dud of a performance.

Darren Collison scored 17 points, Brandan Wright added 14, and the Dallas Mavericks spoiled the Lakers debuts of Howard and Steve Nash with a 99-91 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

In his first regular-season game in a gold jersey, Howard had 19 points and 10 rebounds while missing 11 of his 14 free throws before fouling out with 2:02 to play.

That's hardly the debut he anticipated after arriving in a trade with Orlando last August, but not much has gone according to plan in the first month for the Lakers' starters, who barely played together in their winless preseason due to injuries.

"It's not an excuse, but it will all come with time," Howard said. "We haven't had an opportunity to really play together as much as we want, but we're going to get it. ... We're going to chip away, and we're going to get better."

The Lakers' superstar newcomers both had debuts to forget. Nash managed just seven points and four assists while trying to balance the Lakers' new motion offense with his own strengths on the pick-and-roll - all while getting roundly outplayed by Mavs newcomer Collison.

"It's growing pains, and it's a struggle," Nash said. "We're out of sync, and we're going to probably have some more moments in games like that."

O.J. Mayo had 12 points as the Mavericks pulled off a stunner in their opener, comfortably beating the Lakers without any help from injured Dirk Nowitzki. Dallas and Los Angeles both made big moves in the offseason, yet the Mavericks appeared to be much more together than their high-profile rivals.

"It's a great win," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "If you execute in this league and have talent, you have a chance to win, and we did that. The Lakers are going to be fine. They've got a lot of new guys and a new system, but we were opportunistic tonight and got the job done."

Bryant scored 22 points while playing on an injured right foot for the Lakers, whose loaded lineup followed up its 0-8 preseason with a largely passionless second-half effort in front of a sellout crowd expecting to see a super team capable of contending for the franchise's 17th championship - a fact acknowledged by Bryant when he addressed the fans before the game.

"As you know, we have a lot of expectations this season," Bryant said. "We're trying to live up to the expectations. We're trying to bring another championship back to where it belongs, back to Los Angeles."

Instead, the Lakers showed how much work they will have to do to challenge Miami and the NBA's best.

Dallas steadily pulled away to a 16-point lead in the second half, never allowing any serious runs by their disjointed, disorganized opponents as the Lakers lost their opener for just the fourth time in the last 21 years.

"It's not the way we wanted it to go," said Gasol, who led the Lakers with 23 points and 13 rebounds. "We know it's not going to happen for us right away, but we've just got to stick with it."

Vince Carter, Shawn Marion and Rodrigue Beaubois scored 11 points apiece for the Mavericks, who snapped a six-game skid against the Lakers over the past two seasons.

Dallas also contained Howard by using his career-long free-throw ineptitude against him - hardly a novel strategy, but one that worked particularly well when combined with Howard's opening-night nerves.

"When he had me in a bad position, I wanted to foul him," said Elton Brand, who had eight points and 11 rebounds in his Dallas debut. "Underneath the basket, he's a beast and he's hard to stop. I know he can dunk, and I know he can make those tough layups, so I'm playing the percentages. He obviously hasn't been a good free throw shooter, and tonight he was 3 for 14."

The Lakers were 12 for 31 altogether from the free-throw line, a major factor in their inability to close the gap on Dallas in the second half.

"I've just got to stop thinking so much and get up there and make them," Howard said.

Jae Crowder scored eight points in his NBA debut for the Mavericks, who are likely to be without Nowitzki for at least six more weeks while the German superstar recovers from arthroscopic knee surgery. Dallas also played without new center Chris Kaman, yet had little trouble containing the Lakers down low.

NOTES: Dallas opened its season on the road for the first time since 2007. The Mavericks had opened the season against the Lakers three previous times, losing all three games. ... Howard was called for a flagrant foul in the third quarter for hammering Brand on an open shot in the lane. ... Notebook: Mavericks 99, Lakers 91

THE FACTS: With their best player, Dirk Nowitzki, sidelined for at least another month following knee surgery and another key starter, center Chris Kaman, out with a pulled calf muscle, the Mavericks weren't expected to put up a fight Tuesday night against the re-tooled Lakers. That information obviously wasn't passed along to the Mavericks, who continuously poked holes in L.A.'s defense while pulling away in the second half for a 99-91 season-opening victory at Staples Center.

QUOTABLE: "We were opportunistic." -- Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle

THE STAT: The Lakers can place a lot of blame on themselves for starting the season 0-1 and frustrating their optimistic crowd. Simply put, they shot 12-for-31 from the free-throw line. Dwight Howard, a 58.8 percent career free-throw shooter, was much worse than that in his Lakers debut, shooting just 3-for-14 from the stripe. Howard is the first member of the Lakers to shoot 25 percent or less from the line with a minimum of 10 attempts since 2004.

TURNING POINT: Dallas point guard Darren Collison drained a pull-up jumper with 1.4 seconds remaining in the first half, giving the Mavericks the lead for good, 48-46. Kobe Bryant banked in a shot with five minutes left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to three, but Dallas followed with a 6-0 run and the Lakers never got closer than five the rest of the way.

HOT: After coming over from Indiana in the offseason, Collison had an impressive debut for the Mavericks. The Southern California native scored a team-high 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting and helped limit Lakers point guard Steve Nash to seven points and four assists in his debut as well. That was the first time the eight-time All Star has been held to less than 10 points and five assists while playing at least 20 minutes.

NOT: Nash made the first shot of the game for the Lakers, a 3-pointer after Howard missed a dunk, made his second attempt but then shot 1-for-7 the rest of the way. That was more productive then fellow starter Metta World Peace, who shot 1-for-8 and scored three points.

QUOTABLE II: "Our guys started thinking a little too much and our execution wasn't quite there like it was to start the game." -- Lakers coach Mike Brown

GOOD MOVE: Dallas coach Rick Carlisle made a late change and inserted Brandan Wright into the starting lineup at center, then brought Eddy Curry off the bench. Curry, who was claimed off waivers late last week and had played in just 24 NBA games in the last four years, seemed better equipped to run with the second unit and finished with seven points and four rebounds in 17 minutes.

BAD MOVE: Jordan Hill was one of the more active players for the Lakers, finishing with nine points and five rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench. But after the Lakers cut the deficit to five on a 3-point play by Antawn Jamison at the start of the fourth quarter, he couldn't keep Shawn Marion from dribbling around him and dunking for a three-point play. That pushed the lead back to eight and took the air out of the crowd.

NOTABLE: The Mavericks had six players score in double figures and nine finished with seven points or more.
