Celtics-Heat Preview

MIAMI (AP) The last time the Boston Celtics played a game that truly counted, they had to endure a Miami Heat celebration.

New season, same deal.

Only this time, the party will come before tip-off - not after the final horn.

LeBron James gets his long-awaited first championship ring Tuesday night, when the Heat pay homage to last season's NBA title with a pregame banner-raising ceremony. Dwyane Wade will get his second ring, Heat President Pat Riley his eighth, and the party is the prequel to a Celtics-Heat rematch of last season's Eastern Conference finals that went seven games before Miami advanced.

"We'll honor and respect what we were able to accomplish before the game," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

There's another major story line, of course. It's the first time the Celtics will face Ray Allen as an opponent since he left Boston over the summer and signed with Miami, a decision that his former coach and teammates were most unhappy about.

"It's just another basketball game," Celtics guard Rajon Rondo said.

No, it isn't.

Even Celtics coach Doc Rivers acknowledges that much. After all, it's Boston-Miami.

"If we win, do we get a trophy? We get one win and that's it," Rivers said. "And if we lose, which we don't want to do, we get one loss and it doesn't mean we still can't win it. But at the end of the day, we're all human. ... These games, they don't really have more meaning, but they do have more meaning."

It's the first marquee game of the season, but not actually the first game of the season. That distinction goes to the Washington-Cleveland matchup, which starts on the Cavaliers' home floor about an hour before Heat-Celtics.

The NBA's three-game opening slate concludes in Los Angeles, where the revamped Lakers - now with Steve Nash and Dwight Howard to play alongside Kobe Bryant - play host to the Dallas Mavericks.

In Miami, there have been a slew of upgrades at the arena over the summer - slightly different looks here and there, a new nightclub and restaurant, more concessions and bars for ticketholders to enjoy. The Heat will even offer fans the chance to purchase championship-ring-related merchandise, designed in the same manner as the players' title-reward jewelry.

The upgrades extend to what's going to be on the court as well.

Miami kept its championship rotation intact, while adding Allen and Rashard Lewis to the mix. Allen knows it will be unusual to see the Heat get their rings, especially since five months ago, he was busy trying to thwart their title march.

"I'm excited for these guys, having spent time around them over the last two, three months, getting to know them and their families," Allen said. "I'm happy for them that they won, but at the same time, they beat me and put us out. I understand the emotions that Boston will feel, watching the whole ceremony. But at the same time I'm excited for these guys. And once it's over with, it's business as usual."

Boston's roster looks improved, even without Allen. Jason Terry was signed to bolster the Celtics' bench, there's an influx of youth in the rotation, Jeff Green is back after heart surgery, and the remaining members of what was a Big Four - Rondo, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett - are loaded up for another championship push.

Still, the rivalry and the Allen reunion, make no mistake, weigh heavily on both sides. Neither Garnett nor Pierce has spoken to their former shooting guard since he signed in Miami.

"We're not going to make this into a Ray Allen or Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Rondo thing," Pierce said. "Right now my focus is on playing in the game tomorrow versus the Miami Heat. Everything's that happened has already happened. He's here. He's happy to be here. We wish him the best for his family and the situation, but I'm more focused on the Boston Celtics."

It's the second ring-night in Heat history.

It's almost certain to go better than the first one after Miami's 2006 title.

Any mention of the score from that Chicago-Miami opener - 108-66 - still makes Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem cringe. They're the last two players remaining in Miami from that Heat team, which endured the worst opening-night loss ever for a reigning champion.

"I just remember we got beat," Wade said. "I don't remember the game. That's how long ago that was. Different time."

Haslem remembers plenty.

"It sticks," Haslem said. "But it's six years later. You learn and you move on and you try not to let it happen again. We've got a different group of guys. We're smarter, me and Dwyane are. And we understand the challenges of defending the title now. We were naive. At that point, we thought we could do it again the next year and just do it again and do it again and do it again."

Well, actually, that is James' goal.

He didn't come to Miami for one title. He came for multiple ones. That's one of many reasons why even he's downplaying the ring ceremony and placing his focus squarely on another marquee matchup with Boston.

That being said, he's not overstating it, either.

"Game one doesn't determine who's the better team," James said. "I mean, it's game one."

Heat get rings, then win over Celtics, 120-107

MIAMI (AP) LeBron James got cramps, Ray Allen was snubbed and Dwyane Wade was steaming.

None of that spoiled the Miami Heat mood on ring night.

Wade scored 29 points, James finished 26 points and 10 rebounds while missing much of the second half because of cramps in both legs, and the reigning NBA champion Heat beat the Boston Celtics 120-107 on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

There were actual fireworks before the game to close the ceremony where the Heat got their championship rings and raised their title banner. There also were plenty of figurative fireworks late, first with Boston almost digging out of a 19-point hole and, after the outcome was decided, Rajon Rondo flagrantly fouling Wade by wrapping his arms around his neck on a drive.

In the end, though, the first Celtics-Heat matchup of this season was like the final one of last season - with Miami winning.

"It was good to cap this night off with a win," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It was an emotional time for all of us in our organization."

Even for the newcomers, like Allen. He scored 19 points - needing only seven field goal attempts - in his first game with Miami since leaving Boston over the summer. Chris Bosh had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Miami.

Allen got chants from the Heat crowd, which is nothing new. Except this time, they were positive.

"Never thought I'd hear that here," Allen said.

Paul Pierce scored 23 points, Rondo finished with 20 points and 13 assists, and Leandro Barbosa scored 16 for Boston. The Celtics, who lost to the Heat in last season's Eastern Conference finals, were not on the court for the ring ceremony.

They almost wrecked the festive mood with a late comeback.

An 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter got Boston within 111-107 on Courtney Lee's layup with 2:09 left. That was the last Celtics' hurrah - Bosh scored the game's next seven points, sealing it for Miami.

"I thought they were the aggressor the whole game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "They got on the floor where they wanted to get on the floor. They took us out of stuff that they wanted to."

Rashard Lewis scored 10 points for Miami, which held on even while James, last season's MVP of both the regular season and NBA Finals, was in the locker room for the second time because of the cramps, first in his right leg and then his left.

"It's not an all-the-time thing," James said. "I'm not too worried about it."

The Heat got their championship rings from owner Micky Arison before the game, then watched the banner get hoisted to the rafters. More emotion came late, when Wade drove past Rondo - and the Celtics guard grabbed Wade around the neck. Wade appeared as though he was ready to throw the ball at Rondo in retaliation, and stopped himself.

"I thought he hooked me," Rondo said.

Wade had a different opinion.

"It was a punk play by him," Wade said. "The league will take care of it. He clotheslined me, with two hands."

So Rondo raised eyebrows by putting hands on Wade. Kevin Garnett made news by not offering his hand to Allen.

As Allen entered the game for the first time, he trotted toward the Boston bench, exchanging a handshake, embrace and a few words with Rivers, who hasn't hidden his displeasure about his former shooting guard's decision to sign with Miami and didn't sound certain before the game how he would react when he saw Allen in Miami colors. Allen then briskly shook hands with a few assistant coaches.

But when Allen tried to engage Garnett, the mutual pleasantries ended. Allen tapped Garnett on the shoulder as he sat on the Boston bench; Garnett didn't even flinch, staring straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge the gesture in any way.

"I was just trying to focus as much as I could. I am such an intense person," Garnett said. "It was a blank. Obviously he's on the other side. It's time to play the game, man."

Allen didn't seem flustered. His first shot in a Miami uniform was - what else? - a corner 3-pointer, which swished.

"He was by himself in the corner," Rivers said. "You'd think we'd know better."

Miami controlled much of the first half, taking a 62-54 lead after James went by Pierce and Garnett for a two-handed dunk and yell for the crowd.

The first Heat angst of the season came in the third quarter, when James walked slowly to the bench after a timeout with 4:40 remaining, favoring his right leg and then headed out the tunnel toward the locker room.

When he left, the Miami lead was 79-70.

When he returned to open the fourth quarter, the lead was 93-76. The Heat scored the final eight points of the third, with Bosh, Allen, Mario Chalmers and Lewis all scoring in the final 2:17 to give the Heat their biggest lead of the game.

James - who was dealing with a cramping issue, like he experienced at times in last season's NBA Finals - opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to extend the run to 10-0, and Miami seemed well on its way. But he returned to the locker room a short time later, the cramps having flared up again.

"Once you start cramping, there's nothing you can do about it," James said.

Jeff Green, who had season-ending surgery for an aortic aneurysm last January, played in a game that counts for the first time since May 11, 2011 - also in Miami, when the Heat ousted the Celtics from that season's playoffs. Green finished with three points in 23 minutes.

NOTES: Wade passed the 15,000-point mark for his career early in the second quarter, becoming the 123rd player in NBA history to reach that mark, according to STATS LLC. ... Rondo had at least 10 assists for the 25th straight regular-season game. ... The Celtics allowed 62 points in the first half; they gave up 62 or more only seven times in 379 regular-season and playoff games over the past four seasons. ... Miami players wore sneakers with gold somewhere in the color scheme; James' were primarily gold - in honor of the ring - and trimmed in white and red.

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat started the defense of their NBA title with a 120-107 victory against the Boston Celtics Tuesday at AmericanAirlines Arena.

On the night the Heat received their championship rings, guard Dwyane Wade led all scorers with 29 points while LeBron James added 26 points and 10 rebounds. James spent the final eight minutes in the locker room because of cramps. The Heat led by as many as 19, but the lead was trimmed to four with James on the bench. Forward Chris Bosh scored the Heat's final seven points to close things out.

The Celtics were led by Paul Pierce's 23 points.

QUOTABLE: "It was good to cap this night off with a win. And it was an emotional time for all of us in our organization pregame." -- Heat coach Erik Spoelstra on playing the same night as receiving the championship rings.

THE STAT: Guard Mario Chalmers had 11 assists, production the Heat isn't used to receiving from the point guard spot. It meant Wade and James were among those put in position for easy baskets.

TURNING POINT: The Heat held a comfortable lead for most of the way, but pushed it to double digits with a 12-3 run at the end of the third quarter. The most impressive part was the stretch occurred with James in the locker room being treated for cramps.

HOT: Emotions aside, Ray Allen (19 points) seemed dialed in for this one from the beginning. After hitting his first 3-pointer in the first quarter, he came up with several big shots. A consistent perimeter threat is exactly what the Heat wanted from Allen.

NOT: Kevin Garnett was virtually non-existent for the Celtics. Not only was ineffective on offense, he also failed to provide any inside defensive presence. There hasn't been many games where Garnett was third-best option in the frontcourt.

GOOD MOVE: James made an effort to control the boards early. He had nine rebounds by halftime to help make up for the Heat's lack of size. This is what allows the Heat to play Bosh at center and Shane Battier at power forward.

BAD MOVE: James left the game for a second time with eight minutes remaining. It was then when the Celtics made their late move, including a 14-3 run that cut the lead to four points. The Heat looked somewhat vulnerable without James.

NOTABLE: The Heat played without reserve centers Joel Anthony (hamstring) and Dexter Pittman (leg) ... James had no turnovers. Last year, he had just two games as such ... Olympic medalist Usain Bolt and Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush were among those in attendance.
