Heat-Mavericks Preview

DALLAS (AP) After two days of intense film study and painstaking analysis of the final 14 possessions in their end-of-game collapse in Game 2 of the NBA finals, the Miami Heat finally came up with the reason why.

It wasn't a highly technical reason.

"We let one go," Dwyane Wade said.

And entering Game 3 of the NBA finals, the Heat will try to let Game 2 go again. The way Miami sees it, carrying over the stigma of that loss - one of the worst late-game collapses in finals history - would only doom them again Sunday night when the scene shifts to steamy Dallas for the first of three games on the Mavericks' home floor.

Dallas rallied from 15 points down in the final 7 minutes to beat Miami in Game 2, outscoring the Heat 22-5 to finish the game and knot the series. Thanks to that win, Mavs' fans still may see another NBA championship celebration, only this time, by the Western Conference champions and not a Heat team that hoisted a trophy at Dallas after the 2006 finals.

"In the playoffs, it's a win or a loss. However it comes by, it's a win or a loss," Heat forward LeBron James said. "We've moved on from Game 2, seen the mistakes we've made. Seen some of the great things we've done as well. It's a win or loss. The series is tied 1-1. We never get too high or too low in the series. We haven't gotten too high or low in the regular season as well."

Game 3 is crucial for so many obvious reasons, like the Heat wanting not to deal with another stumble and the Mavericks wanting to keep momentum rolling and retain home-court advantage. Statistically, there's proof that it's a Texas-sized swing game as well. Since the NBA went to the 2-3-2 format for the finals, teams have now split the first two games 12 times. In the previous 11, the winner of Game 3 has always gone on to win the championship.

Big whoop, both teams said in response to that one.

"We just can't let up. We're not good enough to just relax," said Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, who led Dallas' late-game charge in Game 2 at Miami. "We need to play with an edge at all times in every game. So hopefully (Sunday), with the crowd behind us, we're going to have a great game. Just looking at this one game."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was more succinct.

"I think both teams have bucked a lot of those numbers and odds up to this point already," he said. "We're a non-traditional team."

Maybe that's one of the reasons why the Heat were so loose Saturday.

Players arrived at the arena around noon, most with headphones on as they walked off the bus, bobbing heads in time with the music and nodding to people as they walked by. James and Wade were chatting and laughing, a few players checked out the turf that would host an Arena Football League game later Saturday night and some stretched their arms to tap the goalposts as they walked across the floor where a basketball court will be Sunday.

The mood couldn't have been more different from when they walked off the floor in Miami on Thursday, stunned by what just happened.

"We're coming home, but we know that's no guarantee of anything," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "We've lost at home this year in the playoffs. Now Miami has as well. The venue has significance, but it never guarantees anyone anything. ... The mistake that we're not going to make is feel like coming home is going to be something that helps get us over the hump. It's not going to be like that. Both these teams are too good of road teams."

Including the playoffs, the Mavericks have won 34 road games this season, tops in the NBA. Miami ranks second with 32.

The Heat also haven't lost consecutive games since early March, winning after all six of their most recent losses by an average of 11.7 points. And in their last 24 games away from home, they're 17-7.

All good signs for Miami now, given that if it doesn't win one of the next three in Dallas, the season will end here.

"We've been a pretty resilient bunch all year," Heat forward Udonis Haslem said. "We've bounced back every time we've been knocked down. I'm expecting the same thing with this situation."

There's stats the Mavs can point to as ones they like as well, including one that seems particularly significant: Miami rarely wins in Dallas, period.

Dallas has won 12 of the last 14 meetings between the teams at home, six of those coming in single-digit games. Of course, one of those two exceptions was the last time the Mavericks hosted a finals game, June 20, 2006, when Jason Terry missed a potentially game-tying 3-pointer, Wade got the rebound, threw the ball skyward as time expired and Miami prevailed 95-92.

"We're looking at Game 3. That's the only thing on our mind right now," Terry said. "We're at home. What does that mean? It means our building is going to be crazy. We're going to play with a lot of energy. Some of those shots we're missing better go down. That's what home court is all about."

The series is even.

So, too, was the level of confidence both sides were showing Saturday.

Come late Sunday night, neither of those statements will keep ringing true.

"I know I'm excited for the game tomorrow," James said before Miami's workout session on Saturday. "It hurt. We had time to let it hurt us as much as it could yesterday after the game. But today is a new day. And we're back and focused. We're a confident bunch. Me personally, I'm looking forward to the challenge. It's going to be fun."

Wade's actions, words send Heat to 2-1 finals lead

DALLAS (AP) Back in Dallas, the site of his greatest triumph, Dwyane Wade knew exactly what to do.

The NBA finals were up for grabs and he was determined to seize control.

Wade began setting the tone in practice the day before Game 3 and never let up. Soaring to the rim, chasing every loose ball and demanding the best from his teammates, Wade guided the Miami Heat to an 88-86 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday night that puts them two wins from the championship. Game 4 is Tuesday.

"(I) took it upon myself as a leader to try to lead my guys by example," he said. "I was very aggressive going to the hole practicing. My teammates seen it. They can tell that I wanted this game, and I came in with the same mentality today."

Wade led Miami with 29 points and 11 rebounds, yet there was so much more to his performance.

There were timely shots, such as scoring seven of Miami's final nine points, and smart plays on defense, such as flustering Dirk Nowitzki into passing instead of taking a potential go-ahead shot in the final half-minute.

The 2006 finals MVP also dished out harsh words and uplifting ones for LeBron James, Chris Bosh and anyone else he thought needed them.

Regardless of what Wade specifically said, his teammates fed off the passion and intensity behind them.

"At this point there's no room to hold anything back," James said. "As a competitor, you love when guys challenge you. He challenged me in the locker room at halftime. He challenged me on the court. ... I respect that."

Miami was coming off a devastating loss in Game 2, having blown a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Heat again made things tough on their fans, letting a 14-point lead slip away then almost coughing up an 81-74 lead with 6:31 left.

Dirk Nowitzki, who scored the final nine points in Dallas' winning rally in Miami on Thursday night, topped himself by scoring 12 straight points down the stretch - six free throws, a layup, a dunk and a tough jumper that tied it at 86.

But on the Mavericks' final two possessions, Nowitzki threw a pass out of bounds and missed off the back iron as time ran out.

Bosh hit the winning shot with 39.6 seconds left, and Udonis Haslem provided terrific defense on Nowitzki on those final two tries as the Heat regained home-court advantage.

Recent NBA finals history adds to the importance of this win: the Game 3 winner in a tied series has won the championship all 11 times since the 2-3-2 format began in 1985.

Thus, Miami will head into Game 4 on Tuesday night with a chance to win it all on Dallas' floor; the Heat must win that game and the next, on Thursday night.

"If anyone can do it, I believe we can," Wade said.

The Mavericks were looking to build off their big comeback win, especially back at home in front of a loud crowd all decked out in blue T-shirts that read, "The Time Is Now."

But they played sloppy most of the night, such as giving up 14 turnovers that turned into 19 Miami points.

And there was little help for Nowitzki.

He scored 34 points, the same as Dallas' next three best scorers combined. That trio - Jason Terry (15 points), Shawn Marion (10) and Jason Kidd (nine) - didn't have a single point in the fourth quarter. Terry missed four shots, Kidd two and Marion didn't even take any.

Nowitzki wound up scoring 15 of the Mavericks' 22 points in the fourth quarter. For the game, he made 11 baskets and his teammates made a total of 17.

"We have to have somebody step up besides Dirk," said Kidd, who had 10 assists, but also four turnovers. "We have to figure out how to get up front and play up front. The big thing is we've got to be able to make plays late in the game. Game 2 we made the plays, Game 3 we just didn't."

Dallas was without backup center Brendan Haywood because of a hip injury. His absence meant more minutes for several frontcourt players, and it put Ian Mahinmi on the court for 8 minutes. He scored two points and committed five fouls.

The winning basket started with the ball in Wade's hands.

He passed to James near the top of the key while Haslem screened Nowitzki. That let Bosh get set 16 feet from the basket on the left baseline. He took the pass from James and swished it, quite a thrill for the Dallas native who'd been 0-8 in his hometown. It was even more impressive considering his left eyelid was swollen because of an accidental poke by Kidd in the first quarter, and he'd been misfiring all series, even when his vision was good.

"I don't care if he missed 15 in a row," James said. "He was wide open and that's his sweet spot. ... It's the trust we have in each other's ability, no matter what the point of the game is at."

On Dallas' next possession, Nowitzki wanted to take a shot near the foul line but had Haslem swarming him and Wade charging at him. He jumped to shoot but twisted and threw toward Marion near the 3-point line on the right side. Marion had already taken off toward the basket, so the ball went into the front row instead.

After James missed a 3, Dallas had 4.4 seconds left to go for the tie or win. The inbounds pass went to Nowitzki and he was alone against Haslem just above the foul line.

Haslem anticipated what Nowitzki was going to do and walked the fine line between disrupting the shot while avoiding a foul.

"He's a great player, 7 feet, so he's going to shoot over me," Haslem said. "I've got to make it tough on him."

When the buzzer went off, Haslem swung his arms and screamed in delight while a frenzied crowd of 20,340 sighed in agony.

"Emotional game, fought back, and to fall short at the end is tough," Nowitzki said. "But they need two more. Hopefully we can play a better all-around game and finally get some shots to go down."

Wade and Bosh each scored seven points in the fourth quarter. Bosh finished with 18 points.

James came in talking about being more aggressive, but wasn't. He went more than 6 minutes before taking his first shot, but certainly made it worth the wait - a drive through the teeth of the defense for a powerful dunk. He also had a two-handed jam in the second half that put Miami up by 13.

He finished with 17 points and nine assists. He also had four turnovers, including a pair during the fourth quarter.

Mario Chalmers scored 12, including a 36-footer to beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter.

NOTES: Miami has won two straight NBA finals games in Dallas, despite having lost its past nine regular-season games here. ... Who says games can't be decided early? The Heat outscored the Mavericks by seven points in the first quarter. The Mavs outscored the Heat in the second, third and fourth quarters. ... Bosh on his injured eye: "We'll spit on it and put a Band-Aid on it and patch it up later." ... Dallas fell to 8-2 at home this postseason. ... The Heat and Mavs have each won a road game this series, which should be no surprise. They tied for the best road record in the NBA this season.

THE FACTS: Dwyane Wade and the Heat survived a fourth-quarter push by Dirk Nowitzki, edging the Mavericks 88-86 in Game 3 on Sunday in Dallas to take a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals. Wade scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but Miami needed a clutch bucket from Chris Bosh and a late defensive stop by Udonis Haslem to offset Nowitzki's 34-point, 11-rebound night.

Bosh finished with 18 points and LeBron James added 17 points and nine assists. Jason Terry scored 15 off the Dallas bench. The Mavericks got 11 rebounds from Tyson Chandler and 10 assists, nine points and six boards from Jason Kidd.

History is not on the Mavericks' side. Since the NBA went to the 2-3-2 format in the Finals in 1985, 11 series were tied 1-1 entering Game 3. All 11 times, the team that seized the 2-1 lead went on to win the championship.

QUOTABLE: "That's a makeable shot, but 'UD' did a great job of keeping his chest in front of him and forcing him into a fadeaway. Nowitzki is a tough player. That shot hung up in the air about as long as it was in between Game 2 and Game 3."

THE STAT: The Heat said they were going to be in "attack mode" in Game 3 and followed through on that promise. They scored 19 points off 14 Dallas turnovers and outscored the Mavericks by a 40-22 margin in the paint. Miami had at least eight dunks.

TURNING POINT: Bosh's 16-foot baseline jumper with 39.6 seconds left was the game winner and took all of the sting out of another poor shooting performance. After missing 18 of his last 22 shots in Miami, he was just 6-for-17 in Game 3 before connecting when it mattered most.

QUOTABLE II: "We were digging out of holes all night. ... It's very difficult playing from behind all the time."
--Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle, whose team made an 11-2 run to end the first half and a 17-3 run in the third quarter.

HOT: Nowitzki scored 15 in the fourth quarter, including the Mavericks' last 12 points. He did just about everything except finish the job, turning it over with 30.2 seconds left on a wild pass and missing the potential tying shot with 0.3 ticks remaining. ... Mario Chalmers was 4-for-6 from 3-point range and led Miami with 12 points off the bench.

NOT: There were lids on both baskets in a sloppy second quarter. Miami shot 27.8 percent (5-for-18) and Dallas wasn't much better at 30 percent (6-for-20). Considering Wade was 4-for-5 in the period, everyone else shot a combined 21.2 percent (7-for-33).

INSIDE THE ARENA: Troy Aikman, Terrell Owens, Pat Riley, Scottie Pippen and late-night host George Lopez were among the celebrities in the crowd.

GOOD MOVE: After watching Nowitzki blow past Bosh for the winning layup in Game 2, Miami learned its lesson. This time, Haslem defended Nowitzki straight-up in the final seconds and forced him to fire up an off-balance fadeaway near the foul line as time expired.

BAD MOVE: Instead of the Mavericks getting the final shot in the first quarter, J.J. Barea turned it over with an errant pass to Terry with 3.5 seconds left. That enabled Chalmers to sink a 36-foot heave at the buzzer and give Miami a 29-22 lead after one. As it turned out, those three points were huge.

NOTABLE: Backup Mavericks center Brendan Haywood was inactive with a strained right hip flexor, which he aggravated in Game 2. He is day-to-day. With Haywood out, seldom-used Ian Mahinmi was Chandler's primary backup and finished with five fouls, two points and one rebound in 8 minutes. ... Dallas won the rebounding battle (42-36) and blocked eight shots, including three each by Nowitzki and Chandler. ... Bosh, a Dallas native, was 0-8 in his hometown before this win. He got poked in the left eye in the first quarter and played with a swollen eyelid.
