DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) LeBron James is doing it all for Miami, hitting big shots and clamping down on MVP Derrick Rose.

The Heat lead the Chicago Bulls 3-1 in the Eastern Conference finals and a win Thursday at the United Center means they'll be playing for a championship.

That's exactly the way James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh envisioned it when they decided to join together in the offseason. Miami is on the verge of its first trip to the finals since 2006 after beating Chicago 101-93 in overtime on Tuesday.

James led the way with 35 points and helped contain Rose down the stretch. Bosh chipped in with 22, Wade came up with three big blocks in overtime and the bench again delivered as the Heat took a commanding lead.

Now, they'll try to close this one out.

"We understand it's going to be a tough game," Wade said. "But we have the team and we have the guys that are capable of showing up and putting on a performance that we need to win the game. It's not going to be pretty, but that's not Miami Heat basketball anyway."

The Bulls dropped consecutive games only four times during the regular season and never lost more than two in a row. Their first three-game skid could not have come at a worse time.

"When you look at the score, 3-1, it looks bad," Chicago's Luol Deng said.

But he was quick to point out the games have been close. That's one reason he insisted the Bulls are not out of it.

"I really believe we've got a group of guys that are going to keep on fighting," Deng said. "There's no quit in us. There's no quit in that locker room. It's really going to come down to the end of the game again."

Many expected the Heat to run away with the Eastern Conference after they hit the free-agent jackpot, reeling in James and Bosh while re-signing Wade. Instead, it was the remade Bulls who jumped to a league-leading 62 wins and the top overall seed, with Rose becoming the youngest MVP and ending James' two-year reign.

Along the way, they swept three close games from the Heat during the regular season. They even left them in tears after beating them in March, when they were in a five-game losing streak and appeared to be unraveling.

Now it's Miami that has Chicago's players and Coach of the Year Tom Thibodeau rubbing their eyes.

"We still have games to play," Rose said. "Thibs talked to us in the locker room about it, where we're going back to play at home, and we have to stay positive, where they are beatable. But we just have to make sure that we play together and the turnovers have to be down, play defense."

Only eight teams have come back to win a best-of-7 series after trailing 3-1, and if the Bulls are going to be the ninth, this can't continue.

With their length and quickness, the Heat are simply throwing the Bulls' offense out of sync. Any openings are closing in a flash, and the result is this: Miami is outshooting Chicago 46.8 percent to 39.9, and the Bulls have no rhythm on the perimeter.

They're 24 of 77 on 3-pointers, and that's with a 10-for-21 showing in Game 1's victory. The Bulls didn't help themselves by committing three of their 22 turnovers in overtime on Tuesday, coughing it up on consecutive possessions.

Rose gave it away seven times and when he wasn't losing the ball, he wasn't hitting his shots, either. He scored 23 points but made just 8 of 27 shots and only one of his nine 3s.

Miami also continues to get big contributions from its bench, squashing the idea that its three superstars have to do it all by themselves.

In Game 2, it was Udonis Haslem scoring 13 points after missing most of the regular season with a foot injury. In Game 4, the Heat's reserves outscored Chicago's 23-18 and beat them on the glass 18-5, with Mike Miller contributing 12 points and nine rebounds and Mario Chalmers scoring nine.

And in the end, it was the Heat taking command of the series.

"I think it came down to hustle plays," Chalmers said. "At first they (Chicago Bulls) were beating us to all the 50/50 balls. In the fourth quarter and the overtime, we were able to beat them to all the 50/50 balls and that's what helped us win."

As for Rose?

The defense, particularly James down the stretch, had something to do with it. The Heat simply weren't giving him any room, and if they keep that up, they could be moving on.

"(Rose) doesn't have to change," Thibodeau said. "He can go catch-and-shoot, he can go isolation, he can go pick-and-roll. There's a lot of things. But they also have an excellent team defense. It's not just LeBron."

James, Wade lead charge as Heat eliminate Bulls

CHICAGO (AP) LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh had a plan when they decided to team up in Miami and chase a championship together.

Now they have their shot.

After the wild courtship, the decision and a difficult season, the Heat are playing for the title.

James scored 28 points, Wade added 21, and they led a furious rally in the final minutes as Miami eliminated Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls 83-80 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals on Thursday.

James and Wade were simply spectacular down the stretch, each scoring eight during a game-ending 18-3 run as the Heat wiped out a 12-point deficit to win the series.

Now, they are headed back to the NBA finals for the first time since 2006, and in a fitting twist, they'll be facing the Mavericks. Back then, with Wade leading the way, Miami beat Dallas to capture the championship. This time, it'll be James and Dirk Nowitzki going at it for their first rings.

The Heat will host Game 1 on Tuesday night.

"There's no sense of relief right now," James said. "We've still got work to do. We'll look at this moment tonight, have a little bit of time tomorrow to go over this moment, what we just accomplished. But we get ready for Dallas very soon. We don't take for granted this win and take for granted being Eastern Conference champions."

Even so, this is exactly where the Big Three intended to be right from the start, like it or not. And it's safe to say, most don't.

The Heat, after all, wore that villain label well. The free-agent frenzy left a bitter taste for many, particularly James' announcement on national TV.

"I understand a lot of the backlash that came at me going to Miami," he said. "But understand also, I did what was best for me, best for my family and best for me being a professional athlete."

As for the hatred?

"What's today's date - the 26th?" James said. "I say we've got about a month left. About a month left of continued hate. We'll see what happens next year."

The Heat have more immediate matters at hand. They had their difficulties getting this far, including a five-game losing streak in March, but look at them now.

They just knocked off the team that won more games than any other, that boasted the league's MVP in Rose and sent expectations soaring around Chicago in a way not seen since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were racking up championships.

Rose led Chicago with 25 points but hit just 9 of 29 shots. He fouled Wade on a key four-point play and missed a tying free throw with 26.7 seconds left.

"At the end, it's all me," Rose said. "Turnovers, missed shots, fouls. The series is over."

James had 11 rebounds and six assists. Wade's late surge helped negate his nine turnovers. Bosh added 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Heat pulled out a dramatic win.

"We had to go through a lot of adversity," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "That struggle that we went through in March, where we lost five straight - all of them close games, where we didn't execute down the stretch and weren't able to close games out - that helped us. As painful as that was, we had to go through that fire together to be able to gain the confidence where we could be successful now in the postseason."

The Bulls looked like they were in good shape up 77-65 with about three minutes to go, but Wade started the deciding run with a runner and layup. A 3 by James pulled Miami within 77-72 with 2:07 left. Rose then scored on a spin move in the lane, but fouled Wade as he nailed a 3, resulting in a four-point play.

Then, after a miss by Rose, James tied it at 79 with another 3 with 1:01 remaining, sending a loud groan through the arena.

James buried another jumper to put Miami ahead 81-79 with 29.5 seconds left after he stole a pass from Rose. He immediately fouled Rose, who missed the second free throw after making the first.

Kurt Thomas then tipped the inbounds pass, but the Heat recovered, leading to two free throws for Bosh. The Bulls still had one more chance to tie it, but Kyle Korver got doubled up top and passed to Rose on the wing. His 3-pointer got blocked by James, with Udonis Haslem doubling him as time expired.

"We don't even know what happened," Wade said. "I'm not going to lie to you and say we do."

It all seemed like a blur to him - and not just the late rally. The entire season, really.

Wade scrolled all the way back to those first few days of training camp, when the Heat gathered at Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida's Panhandle, trying to limit distractions.

"It just seems like yesterday we were coming together as a new unit, and the Miami organization decided we needed to get away and (have) it just be about us and not let any outside distractions get in," he said. "And it was just about us."

Now, James and his gang have their title shot.

He came close with Cleveland, getting all the way to the finals in 2007 but never could win it all. His surge at the end capped a terrific series in which he repeatedly made big shots and helped contain Rose at times.

For Chicago, it was simply a bitter end.

After losing out on their bid to land some combination of two of the Big Three in free agency, they built a solid team that leaped to the top of the Eastern Conference with a league-leading 62 wins. That's probably little consolation after they let this one slip away. It could be a valuable learning experience, though, for a team making its first deep run.

"I do think experience helps," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "That being said, all these games came down to the end. ... Tonight, we had the lead and we couldn't hold onto it. Hopefully, we learn from that, move on. I think you use this experience to drive you so you can improve for next year."

They took the opener 103-82, but the series soured for them after that. They were in every game and led this one for much of the way. But the Heat ultimately came out on top.

"You can see that we have two, three players that have no fear," president Pat Riley said. "Chris steps up there and makes two free throws that he's got to make. LeBron and Dwyane struggling a little bit with their game most of the night, but they made some big, big shots.That's what it's all about. We're just happy to be back in the finals."

Notes: Not since the Houston Rockets dropped Game 1 to Phoenix in the 1995 Western Conference semifinals had a team won a best-of-seven after dropping the opener by more than 20. Twenty-three teams had lost Game 1's in that situation and gone on to lose the series before the Heat eliminated the Bulls. ... Thibodeau had high praise for rookie center Omer Asik, who missed the game with a season-ending broken left fibula. With Asik out, veteran Brian Scalabrine was active.

Heat-Bulls notebook

CHICAGO -- FACTS: Experience has been a buzzword in these playoffs, and Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals was all of that again. As was the case in Game 4, Derrick Rose and the Bulls couldn't close the the deal in the final minutes, while LeBron James and the time-tested Heat made almost all the right moves. Once again, Rose (25 points, eight assists, five fouls) missed a crucial free throw down the stretch, one that would have tied the score with 26.7 seconds on the clock. Heat forward Chris Bosh calmly drained a pair of charity tosses, the final touches on a remarkable comeback that saw the visitors erase a 77-65 deficit in the final 3:14.

For three-plus quarters, it appeared that the series would be a brand new ballgame. In a replay of the series opener, the Bulls did the" dirty work," as Heat coach Erik Spoelstra called it. They played smart, aggressive defense, controlled both backboards, received contributions from several players and led by as many 13 points.

James would have none of it, however, as he took the game by the throat. In the fourth quarter, he a dozen points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot. The big three of James (28), Bosh (20) and guard Dwyane Wade (21) accounted for all except 14 of their team's points.

QUOTABLE I: "Everything is on me -- turnovers, missed, shots, fouls ... If anything, I'll learn from it. That's all I can do right now. The series is over."

STAT: Rose was the Most Valuable Player in the regular season, but he was no match for James in this series. The former two-time MVP averaged 25.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.6 assists in the five games, while the reigning one checked in at 23.4, 4.0 and 6.6, respectively.

QUOTABLE III: "We all want to prove that we're the best player on the court. We know what kind of player that LeBron is. We know how badly he wants to be in this situation. He's back in the NBA Finals. He carries that pain to have come up short before everywhere he goes. That will help him, and that will help us as a team."

STAT II: What's up with Dwayne Wade? That is certain to be a major story line before the NBA Finals. In the first half, he had one field goal and six turnovers. The man known as Flash showed flashes in the fourth quarter, when he scored 10 points, but his two-assist, nine-turnover performance did nothing to quiet talk about his sore left shoulder.

QUOTABLE III: "[The shoulder] isn't 100 percent -- never."

TURNING POINT: In a 60-second span, Rose fouled Wade on a 3-pointer, missed an off-balance floater and threw an errant pass that led to nine consecutive points.

STAT III: Heat players were seen to flash zero smiles after the game.

QUOTABLE V: "Given everything that we've been through, this isn't our goal. This is a step. We'll play a very tough [Dallas] Mavericks team. They want to win just as badly as we do. There's no no time to celebrate. We have continue to work."

HOT: James smelled blood in the final two minutes, seven seconds, when he connected on a pair of 3-pointers and a two-pointer in as many tries.

HOT II: Prior to Game 5 against the Bulls last season, while he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers, James correctly predicted that their first-round series would not return to Chicago. Before Game 5 on Thursday night, he made the same remark.

NOT: Rose never did find his outside shot in the series. He misfired on 20-for-29 field goal tries in the series finale and shot only 35 percent (42-for-120) overall.

GOOD MOVE: Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau decided to play Kurt Thomas for the first time in the series. The veteran forward responded with four points and seven rebounds in the fourth quarter.

BAD MOVE: The Bulls led late in the third period, 58-46, when forward Carlos Boozer elbowed James in the face on a drive to the bucket. Boozer was assessed with a flagrant foul, James sank both free throws and the Heat got a wake-up call.
