Heat-Bulls Preview

DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) On the night of the big "Decision" last summer, Luol Deng was at the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya with no TV, and no one was asking if LeBron James would sign with the Chicago Bulls.

Deng wasn't paying attention to the soap opera. No one there was.

"They didn't really care," Deng said.

Deng will be paying close attention to James starting Sunday, when the Bulls meet the Miami Heat in an Eastern Conference finals that could have been ripped out of a Hollywood script.

On one side is a team led by MVP Derrick Rose that stormed to the league's best record. On the other is a squad led by a superstar trio that decided to unite in Miami after meeting with Chicago.

"Everyone has the right to make the decision that they want," Deng said. "They got what they wanted. We're happy with the team that we have."

The Heat got James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in perhaps the greatest free agent haul ever, hoping to win a championship - or five.

The Bulls wound up with one of the deepest teams after failing to reel in the "Big Three" and are back in the conference finals for the first time since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were completing their second championship three-peat in 1998. Along with Rose, they have the Coach of the Year in Tom Thibodeau, a league-leading 62 wins and homecourt advantage.

As consolations go, that's not bad.

Beating the Heat would be even better.

With enough cap room to lure two star free agents, the Bulls made it clear they were going to be big spenders last summer and were looking for more after winning 41 games and losing in the first round each of the past two years.

They fired Vinny Del Negro and replaced him with Thibodeau, the first in a series of major moves that vaulted them into the championship picture. When the Big Three decided to unit in South Beach, Chicago acquired Carlos Boozer and role players like Kyle Korver.

But what if the Bulls had landed one or two of the "Big Three?" Chicago had a strong pitch, with one of the top young point guards in Rose and solid support like Deng and Joakim Noah.

"It was a great meeting that I had with that team and that franchise, knowing the history," James said. "There was some great things that they said, but at the end of the day, I felt like this was the best opportunity for me to win a championship.

"But it was a great team," he added. "I definitely had one or two mornings where I woke up thinking I would be a Bull, too, but ultimately I decided to come here."

Wade joked that "it was like two mornings" he woke up thinking he would sign with Chicago.

"I grew up in the city, I grew up with my dreams of wanting to become an NBA player from the Chicago Bulls," Wade said. "It was flattering from that standpoint and they gave a great presentation, great opportunity. Just felt that the Miami opportunity was better."

But what if? What if James and Wade had signed with Chicago? Or if one of them joined Bosh with the Bulls? Would Rose have shown up for training camp wondering why he couldn't be the MVP - and gone on to win it, ending James' two-year reign? Or would he have settled into more of a traditional point guard role, setting up his high-profile teammates?

"I really don't know," he said. "I'm too caught up into this year and too caught up in my teammates to even comment about it because I'm fine with the teammates I have now."

At 62-20, the Bulls matched their best record since the 1997-98 championship season and swept three regular-season games from Miami, albeit by a combined eight points. That was apparently enough to make the Heat break down, with coach Erik Spoelstra acknowledging there were "a couple of guys crying in the locker room" after Chicago's 87-86 victory on March 26.

The Heat eventually regrouped and won 15 of 18 down the stretch to finish with 58 wins and the second seed. They took out Philadelphia and Boston in five games each, and they come into this series with James and Wade on a roll.

Wade averaged 30.2 points in the Boston series. James scored 35 and 33 in the final two games against the Celtics.

When they take the court on Sunday, Deng will certainly be paying attention.

Afterall, he'll be trying to contain him.

Deng didn't have much luck in the playoffs last year against Cleveland, when James averaged 31.8 points, but the Bulls emerged as one of the league's best defensive teams under Thibodeau.

Then again, James now has plenty of help, with Wade and Bosh.

"I think a lot of people are looking forward to this series," James said. "Honestly, a lot of people didn't think we'd get past Boston. So we're moving on and we're looking forward to the challenge. Two good teams, two great defensive teams, so it's going to be a struggle for both teams offensively at times. May the best man win."

Bulls take Game 1 from Heat with 103-82 rout

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Bulls saw the stars aligning for the Heat last summer, the "Big Three" free agents uniting in Miami on a quest for a championship.

Joakim Noah wasn't conceding anything. Nor was Derrick Rose.

Chicago swept Miami in the regular season, and if the Bulls keep this up, they'll knock the Heat out of the playoffs, too.

Rose scored 28 points, Luol Deng ably contained LeBron James and the Bulls struck first in the Eastern Conference finals, pulling away to beat the Heat 103-82 in Game 1 on Sunday night.

"We felt like we could compete against anybody," said Noah. "This is just a really exciting situation right now. The position that we're in is unbelievable. ... Nobody believed that we could be in this position right now."

That belief, along with a major overhaul, led the Bulls to the league's best record and rekindled an attitude not seen in the Windy City since the Michael Jordan era - when championships were an annual event.

Missing out on the Big Three? Seeing James and Bosh join Wade in Miami?

"We're not worried about all the offseason stuff," Rose said. "We're not worried about it. We're just trying to go out there and play hard, play with an edge, play with a lot of intensity."

They certainly did on Sunday, particularly during the second half. The Bulls went on a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter, then pulled away in the fourth.

As the final minutes ticked away, fans chanted "Over-rated!" and "Beat the Heat!"

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Chicago.

Rose settled down after committing three of his four turnovers in the opening minutes and showed why he is the MVP. He hit three 3-pointers and the Bulls converted 10 of 21 in all.

Deng had 21 points. He hit four 3s, had four steals and seven rebounds, and simply put the clamps on The King, holding James to 15 points on 5-of-15 shooting.

"Definitely to guard a guy like that the whole defense has to stay focused," Deng said. "There were times we switched and times we forced him into the double. Our bigs were great at forcing him into the front."

Carlos Boozer added 14 points and nine rebounds. Noah had 14 rebounds to help the Bulls win the battle of the boards 45-33, including 19 on the offensive end for 31 second-chance points.

"You play defense. You play defense hard and the shot goes up and they get an offensive rebound, kick it out for a three or get a layup or a dunk," James said. "Those are demoralizing for a defensive team. We've got to figure out a way to clean that up."

Bosh led Miami with 30 points and nine rebounds. Wade scored 18 points, but the Heat simply were overmatched down the stretch.

"Dwyane and LeBron are going to create a lot of attention," Bosh said. "This is a good defensive team. ... They're going to make them distributors. We have to look at where we fell short as a team for Game 1 and come back with a better approach."

The Heat were leading 58-57 midway through the third when the Bulls made their move, reeling off 10 straight and seizing the momentum.

Rose and Bogans started it by nailing 3-pointers. A steal by Bogans against Wade led to two free throws by Rose after he got knocked to the floor going for a fast-break layup.

Then, after a timeout, Noah blocked a layup by Wade and scored seconds later on a layup off an inbound pass along the Bulls' baseline, making it 67-58.

The Heat's James Jones ended the run with a 3, but the Bulls simply weren't about to be stopped. When Deng hit a 3 with 1:15 left to make it 72-63, the crowd jumped to its feet and roared. It opened a 14-3 run that stretched into the fourth and put the game away.

Whether it was Taj Gibson feeding Omer Asik for a dunk early in the fourth or Deng racing in to put back his own missed jumper after a 3 by James, there was plenty for the Chicago fans to cheer during that stretch.

For at least some Chicago fans, beating Miami to get to the NBA finals would be sweet redemption after what happened during the summer.

With enough salary-cap room for a pair of stars, the Bulls went after James, Wade and Bosh, hoping to land some combination of the two. Everyone knows the end of that story. Even so, the Bulls wound up in great shape. The Heat did all right, too, particularly down the stretch.

They won 15 of 18 after dropping five in a row, including a loss to Chicago that left players in tears, and then took out Philadelphia and Boston in the first two rounds. Now, the Heat will have to collect themselves again.

"We took it on the chin tonight," coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Notes: Gibson had a highlight-reel dunk early in the second quarter when he threw down a vicious two-hander over Wade, leading to a three-point play. How impressive was it? Even Wade clapped about six times when he saw the replay. "That was a good one," Wade said. "I really got punked. It was good. It was a very athletic play. I knew I didn't have a chance. I was backpedaling when I saw him take off. He's very athletic." ... This is the sixth time these teams have met in the playoffs, with the Bulls sweeping the Heat in the first round in 1992, 1996 and 2007 and beating them in five games in the 1997 conference finals. Miami beat Chicago in six games in the first round in 2006.

Heat-Bulls notebook

FACTS: In the series opener, B stood for Bulls, 'Bounds and Bench. The Central Division champions played to their strengths, as they dominated the backboards (45-33), second-chance points (31-8) and bench production (28-15) by considerable margins. Guard Derrick Rose didn't put up large numbers -- 28 points, six assists -- yet his team trailed for all of 27 seconds in the second half.

The series will amount to a tug-of-war for tempo, and the series opener was more of a half-court affair, which was precisely how the Bulls planned it. Heat top guns Dwyane Wade and LeBron James were limited to 18 and 12 points, respectively, and with open-court chances at a premium, neither was able to impose his will on the game. In fact, it was easy to forget that they were on the court at times.

QUOTABLE I: "They've got great players on their team. You have to make sure they don't get open shots, contest all their shots, make sure they don't get to the lane. We did a good job to make sure they saw bodies when they went to the lane."

TURNING POINT: The Bulls turned up their ball and weak-side pressure in the third quarter, when they outscored the visitors by a 24-15 margin. Specifically, the contest turned in a two-minute, 14-second span in which they ran off 10 consecutive points to take a 67-58 advantage.

QUOTABLE III: "(The defensive effectiveness) started in the second quarter with our bench guys and their ball pressure and energy. That group got us going. Then in the second half, everybody's defense was a lot better."

GOOD MOVE: The Bulls collapsed on long-ball threat James Jones at the 3-point arc, and for all intents and purposes, they took the sixth man out of the game. He attempted only one 3-pointer in 24 minutes, as his contributions were limited to four points and a single rebound.

BAD MOVE: The Heat packed the middle to increase their rebound chances, but that made for wide open spaces at the perimeter. Rose and forward Luol Deng (21 points) combined for seven 3-pointers, and the closest person was in Winnetka on several of them.

STAT: Reserve forward Taj Gibson (nine points, seven rebounds) threw down a pair of high-voltage dunks, the last of which provided the exclamation point in the fourth quarter.

QUOTABLE IV: "Did you see the dunks that (Gibson) had? That inspired us. I wish was 22 (years old) again. I felt that, when he did it, we all did it, you know?"

HOT: Chris Bosh took a lot of, uh, heat in the regular season, but most will be forgotten if the forward plays with the assertiveness that he displayed in the opener. The veteran scored a game-high 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 37 minutes.

NOT: The James-Wade duo combined to shoot only 12-for-32 in the field.

QUOTABLE IV: "They did a good job pressuring us. We didn't move the ball much. We let it get too late in the shot clock and had to throw up some Hail Marys."
