Hawks-Bulls Preview

DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) Derrick Rose saw one team playing harder, chasing down loose balls and scoring easy baskets, and that would have been fine with him if not for one small problem.

His team wasn't putting forth the superior effort.

The Atlanta Hawks were. Now, the top-seeded Chicago Bulls are trying to pick themselves up after a 100-88 loss Sunday that left the Eastern Conference semifinals tied 2-2.

"They just played harder, getting to loose balls, second effort, chasing balls down," Rose said after a light practice and video session Monday.

Game 5 is Tuesday at the United Center, and another effort like that could put the Bulls on the brink of elimination. That's not what they envisioned after breezing to a league-leading 62 wins and securing home-court advantage. But this hasn't been an easy postseason for favorites in general.

The Los Angeles Lakers just got knocked out, swept by Dallas. San Antonio was gone after the first round. Boston or Miami will be, too, with the Celtics and Heat slugging it out in the other Eastern semifinal.

The Hawks see all that happening and figure everything's wide open.

"We do feel like that," Jamal Crawford said. "Sure other teams feel like that as well. Right now, it's just a three-game series. Who thought we'd be here at this point? ... I like our chances. But I'm sure every other team like theirs as well."

It was hard to envision the Hawks advancing this far, considering they dropped their final six games and finished the regular season with just 44 wins. Yet, they knocked off Orlando and are threatening an upset against Chicago.

For the Bulls, this is new territory.

They came into the postseason with soaring expectations after matching their best record since the 1997-98 championship season, only to get pushed hard by Indiana in the opening round.

Atlanta isn't backing down, either, and losing this series would be a letdown for a team that underwent a big overhaul after back-to-back first-round exits.

Dropping Game 5 would really put Chicago on shaky ground. Even so, Rose insisted there's no pressure on the Bulls; they just want to play better.

"If anything, I think that all of us are mad with the effort that we put in the last game," he said. "It wasn't good enough. Tomorrow, we're playing back in our building. The atmosphere is going to be unbelievable, and we're just going to have to play."

The Hawks looked like they might be on their way out after getting shredded 99-82 in Game 3, but they dug in instead, outscoring Chicago 16-4 over the final four minutes to pull even in the series.

Josh Smith decided to go to the basket rather than settle for jumpers and wound up with 23 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists.

Al Horford scored 20 on 9-of-11 shooting in his best game of the season. Joe Johnson chipped in with 24 and the Hawks shot just under 50 percent against one of the league's stingiest defenses.

"I just went out there played my game, played with a ton of confidence," said Smith, who'd been getting booed. "Just rolled with the tidal wave with the crowd. And we got it done last night."

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said they need to do a better job keeping him off the boards and "gang rebound." That means the guards being active on the glass.

It would help, too, if they kept Jeff Teague out of the paint and if Rose played like an MVP.

He scored 34 points Sunday but was nowhere near as effective as in Game 3, when he poured in a career-best 44 while leading Chicago to an easy win.

He attempted 32 shots Sunday, sparking a debate whether he took too many. Just for the record, the only number that Rose thought was too high was the misses.

"I was just missing shots," he said. "Looking at film, I missed a ton of layups - layups I normally don't miss. It wasn't like I was taking a whole bunch of crazy shots or a whole bunch of jump shots. Those were shots that I normally make. My confidence is still high. My teammates, they trust me. I have confidence when I'm taking shots, and I'm going to continue to."

The fact that Rose was aggressive was encouraging. He also wound up with 10 assists even though the Bulls shot 41 percent, and the Bulls can also take comfort in Carlos Boozer showing some spark.

Limited by a turf toe injury on his right foot, he hit 7 of 10 shots while scoring 18 points and heard "Booz" instead of "boos" from the Chicago fans in Atlanta. Still, the Bulls struggled from the outside, hitting just 3 of 16 3-pointers. Kyle Korver (0 for 5) and Luol Deng (1 for 6) in particular were off-target.

That needs to change. So does this.

"When you see the film, you can see that their players played with a lot more of an edge," Chicago's Taj Gibson said. "Seeing as their backs were against the wall, they played a lot harder."

Rose leads Bulls past Hawks 95-83

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Bulls were looking for someone, anyone, to provide a spark, and it figured that Derrick Rose would.

It was no shocker, either that Taj Gibson provided one, too.

Rose scored 33 points, Gibson scored all of his 11 in the fourth quarter, and the Bulls beat the Atlanta Hawks 95-83 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Tuesday night to take a 3-2 lead.

Luol Deng added 23 points and Chicago let out a big sigh of relief.

"It's definitely fun playing against a good team," Rose said. "Coach always said we're going to have to walk through the fire together. Every series has tested us in every way, but I think that we're sticking together."

Game 6 is Thursday in Atlanta, and a win would put Chicago in the conference finals for the first time since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen wrapped up their second championship three-peat in 1998. They are in this position after dominating Atlanta in the fourth quarter 26-15, with Rose matching Gibson's 11 points.

Rose showed why he is the league's youngest MVP, hitting 11 of 24 shots and finishing with nine assists. It was a big improvement over Game 4 when he needed 32 shots to score 34 points, and he was particularly effective down the stretch, attacking the rim.

"It forces the defense to collapse, leads to easy opportunities for others, it leads to some second shots," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We want to be inside-out so I thought it was huge."

Atlanta's Jeff Teague came up big again filling in for the injured Kirk Hinrich, scoring 21 for the third time in this series, but the Hawks came up short in the end.

Josh Smith contributed 16 points. Joe Johnson 15, Zaza Pachulia 13 and Al Horford added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

"We were playing for everything," Horford said. "We have to regroup again and get ready for Thursday."

It hasn't been an easy postseason for the Bulls after they stormed to a league-leading 62 wins, with Indiana pushing them in the first round and the Hawks doing the same. Even so, they are poised to advance.

The Bulls led by as many as 15 points in the first quarter but were trailing 70-69 early in the fourth when they went on a 9-0 run.

Rose started it when he drove to his left for a layup, fed Gibson a no-look pass in transition for a three-point play and added a layup that made it 78-70.

Then, midway through the fourth, he drove for a three-point play that made it 85-76. Fans were screeching "MVP! MVP!" as he buried the free throw, and after Atlanta pulled within six, Chicago reeled eight straight to make it 93-79, with six points coming from Gibson.

"Taj is a good player," Rose said. "I think he really doesn't know how good he is."

The fourth quarter aside, it wasn't an easy night for the Bulls.

Considering Chicago got 15 points each from Rose and Deng in the first half and led by as many as 15, the Hawks were probably glad to be trailing 48-42 at halftime. They kept coming at the Bulls in the third quarter.

Things got particularly tense after a two-handed dunk by Smith cut Chicago's lead to 61-60 with just over 4 minutes left in the period. He hung on the rim and Carlos Boozer gave him a forearm to the face, leading to a retaliatory shove from Smith and technical fouls for both players.

"I dunked the basketball and I go to turn and he just cleared me with an elbow to the jaw," Smith said. "Nobody is going to do that to me. I don't care who you are. I'm a man first."

Smith gave the Hawks their first lead of the game when he nailed a jumper that made it 64-63 with 1:45 remaining. Deng answered with a jumper and hit two free throws after Horford scored to make it 67-66.

Pachulia then hit an 11-footer with 9.8 seconds left before Gibson drove upcourt and fed Ronnie Brewer to give Chicago a 69-68 lead going into the fourth. Then, after a layup by Teague, Rose went off. So did Gibson, and the Bulls prevailed.

"The series is not over with," Smith said. "We have to go and play with a ton of energy on Thursday. We have to do a better job of keeping Derrick Rose out of our paint. If we do that we should be coming back here to play a Game 7."

Notes: The Hawks went big again, with coach Larry Drew sticking with the lineup that helped them win Game 4. Jason Collins starting at center, Horford at power forward and Smith at small forward, with Marvin Williams in a reserve role. ... Keith Bogans, who sprained his right ankle in Game 4, scored 11 for Chicago after being limited to free throws at the morning shootaround. ... Boozer finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls.

THE FACTS: Derrick Rose scored 33 points and backup forward Taj Gibson scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead the host Chicago Bulls to a 95-83 victory over the Atlanta Hawks to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. Jeff Teague led the Hawks with 21 points, but the Hawks shot just 29 percent in the fourth quarter, which started with the Bulls up by just one point.

THE FACTS II: The Bulls ran out to a 10-2 lead immediately, and led by 15 points in the first half, but the Hawks battled back to take the lead by one point in the third quarter. The Bulls then got serious on defense in the fourth quarter, limiting the Hawks to 15 points.

QUOTABLE: "Taj, he doesn't know how good he is right now."

THE STAT: The Hawks were 1-for-12 from 3-point range, and Jamal Crawford finished the game 1-for-9 overall and missed all four of his 3-point shots.

THE STAT II: The Bulls, needing someone other than Rose to score, got 11 points from Luol Deng and eight points from Keith Bogans in the first quarter.

TURNING POINT: The Bulls went on a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter to build a 78-70 lead. The key play in the spurt was a three-point play by Gibson.

HOT: Gibson was 5-for-5 from the field for his 11 points. Bogans contributed 11 points, making three of five 3-pointers.

NOT: Joakim Noah contributed nothing offensively, missing his two shots in 27 minutes. Outside threat Kyle Korver played just four minutes and did not take a shot.

ROOKIE WATCH: Bulls center Omer Asik played almost 20 minutes filling in for Noah. He had four rebounds and was a key to the Bulls' defensive lineup.

GOOD MOVE: Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau went with his best defensive lineup through most of the fourth quarter, with Rose, Deng, Ronnie Brewer, Gibson and Asik on the floor.

BAD MOVE: Jason Collins started again at center for the Hawks, but played just 14 minutes and contributed little on either end of the floor.

NOTABLE: Although Gibson became the star of the game with his fourth-quarter performance, the Hawks' bench outscored the Bulls' bench 19-17, led by Zaza Pachulia's 13 points.
