ATLANTA (AP) There's a sign on the wall leading into the Atlanta Hawks' locker room that says: "We Control Our Own Destiny."

Indeed, even after a humiliating loss in Orlando, the Hawks remain in control of their playoff destiny against the Magic. They're still leading the series. They're still one win away from finishing off the Magic.

Best of all, they're back at home for Game 6.

"We are still in a great position," coach Larry Drew said Wednesday after a lengthy film session with his assistants, breaking down a 101-76 rout by the Magic the night before. "We've put the ball back in our court, with the possibility to close it out at home. That's what we plan to do."

The Hawks won Game 1 in Orlando to steal home-court advantage, and protected that edge with two close wins at home. They had hoped to close out the series on the road, but the Magic were having none of that.

Changing up his game plan, coach Stan Van Gundy ran less of the offense through Dwight Howard, who averaged more than 32 points over the first four games but got little help from his teammates. Running the Hawks ragged with one pick-and-roll after another, Orlando got strong games out of Jason Richardson (17 points) and backup guard J.J. Redick (14 points).

Howard played less than 30 minutes, made only one shot from the field and finished with a mere eight points and eight rebounds. Even so, the Magic dominated from the opening tip, racing out to a 23-point lead by halftime.

"I don't think it can be one or two guys. Those first four games, it was basically just Dwight carrying us," Van Gundy said. "We need more people involved. We need to have a lot of people play well."

Just as Drew is stressing to his team that they still lead the series, Van Gundy wants his team to continue playing with the desperation of a squad that's facing another one-and-done scenario.

"Our energy and effort has to be at least what it was (in Game 5), if not better," he said. "My main message was, we're still behind. My analogy today was it's like a game when you're down 25 and then you make a run to get it back to 10. You feel good that you're playing better, but you can't celebrate because you're still down 10 and you've got a long way to go before you actually win it."

After the game, the first thing Van Gundy wrote on the board was: "3-2, we're still behind."

"All we did was cut into the lead a little bit," he said. "We're still getting our butts kicked. And that's got to be the attitude."

The Hawks shot just 36 percent (25 of 89) in their worst performance of the series. Josh Smith was the only starter in double figures with 22 points.

Drew said no one - not even Smith - played up to an acceptable standard.

"I didn't see the effort I saw in games 3 and 4," the coach said. "There was a very glaring difference in our effort on both ends of the floor. We watched it some with the players, so they can see. The bottom line is, this is playoff basketball. This is the time where every possession counts. We played against a team that had their back against the wall, and we didn't respond to their intensity. That was very glaring."

The Hawks expect Van Gundy to keep calling the same style of offense that worked so well in Game 5, so they'll have to work even harder to fight through screens and cut down on the open looks the Magic get from beyond the 3-point stripe. They made 11 of 26 on Tuesday night, quite an improvement on their dismal 2-of-23 showing the previous game.

"It kind of threw us off," Smith said. "The first four games, they were predictable. In Game 5, they ran so much pick-and-roll it was kind of hard to defend with the different coverages we had. It's nothing but a chess match. I know we're going to come up with a different scheme, and hopefully it works for us."

One thing the Hawks don't want to do is return to Orlando for a decisive game.

"This is pretty much our best chance," forward Marvin Williams said. "It would be tough to go back down there and steal a win in Game 7.

Looking for any motivational edge they can get, the Hawks ran off copies of a newspaper article written by an Orlando columnist, who called the Hawks "birdbrains" and guaranteed the Magic would rally to win the series after losing Game 1 at home and falling behind 3-1.

Each Atlanta player got a copy in his locker.

"That wasn't my idea," Drew insisted. "But I heard the article got passed around. Certainly, you can always use some bulletin-board material. But at this stage of the game, its just about us coming out and being ready to do battle."

Slighted Hawks eliminate Magic, get Bulls next

ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Hawks didn't like the way things ended a year ago.

They certainly were miffed about being written off in these playoffs.

Well, look who's moving on to the next round.

Using every motivational trick in the book, Atlanta held on for an 84-81 victory in Game 6 Thursday night to finish off the Orlando Magic.

Joe Johnson scored 23 points and came up with a huge offensive rebound in the closing seconds, helping the Hawks advance to face the top-seeded Bulls, with Game 1 in Chicago on Monday night.

"They never give us a chance," Atlanta forward Josh Smith said. "They never talk about the Hawks. They talk about Orlando, Chicago, Boston and Miami. We're always sneaking under the radar."

The Hawks were spurred on by a blowout in last year's playoffs, losing four straight to Orlando in the most lopsided sweep in NBA history.

"When you lose by an average of 25 points a game, what better redemption than to play them again?" said Jamal Crawford, who hit two big free throws after Johnson swatted him the loose ball. "We were up to the challenge."

Atlanta was further motivated by an inopportune comment from Magic guard Jameer Nelson at the end of the regular season. After a close loss to Chicago, Nelson whispered to Bulls star Derrick Rose loud enough for a TV microphone to pick up, "See you in the second round."

Instead, Rose will be facing the Hawks.

Nelson and the Magic are heading home.

"That's kind of a slap in the face to us and to the organization," Hawks forward Al Horford said. "I'm sure he's a great guy, but that was uncalled for."

Orlando heads into an uncertain offseason after its earliest playoff ouster since 2007. Who knows what the future holds for the Magic's best player, Dwight Howard?

The big man can become a free agent after next season but may be angling to get out earlier, now that the Magic appear to be heading in the wrong direction. Orlando made the NBA finals two years ago, the conference finals last season. Now, six games into the postseason, it's over.

"Let's not even talk about it. There's no need to bring it up," Howard said. "Right now, I'll figure out how can I get myself better for next season, not figure out what team I want to play for. But right now I'm with the Magic. So all the speculation can stop. There's no need to talk about it."

With Atlanta clinging to a one-point lead and the clock running down, Marvin Williams missed a clinching 3-pointer. But Johnson swatted the ball to Crawford, who was fouled and made both foul shots with 8.2 seconds left.

"I just wanted to make a play," said Johnson, who bounced back from a dismal five-point effort in Game 5. "The play was a pick-and-roll for Al and Jamal, but we didn't come up with what we wanted. I just crashed the glass and tried to somehow get a hand on it."

The Magic had two chances to force overtime. J.J. Redick missed an open 3, then Jason Richardson had a desperation shot from the corner blocked by Smith.

"A team that fights as hard as our guys did, and I couldn't get them over the hump to win this series, that really is disappointing to me and the job that I did as a coach," Orlando's Stan Van Gundy said, choking up a bit. "I'm just disappointed not to be able to get my team over the hump."

Redick came off a screen for a clear view of the basket, a play that couldn't have been drawn up any better. The shot rimmed out, though it went out of bounds off an Atlanta player to provide the Magic with one more shot. After his team called another timeout, Redick walked to the bench with his hands on his head.

That would be their last chance to extend the series. Orlando inbounded from the baseline to Richardson, but he didn't have much room to work in the corner. Smith extended a hand to finish off the Magic.

Hedo Turkoglu kicked the ball off the scoreboard hanging above the court in frustration as streamers fell from the ceiling, the sellout crowd celebrating the series winner.

The Magic was beaten off the glass 38-31, giving up 14 boards at the offensive end.

"The biggest thing was the rebounding," Van Gundy said. "It's sort of fitting we couldn't get a rebound on the last stop."

After not having much of an impact in Orlando's 25-point, series-extending win in Game 5, Howard led the Magic with 25 points and 15 rebounds. But, falling into a familiar pattern from the first four games, he didn't get much help from his teammates.

Turkoglu had 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Nelson was the only other Orlando player in double figures with 11.

Crawford scored 19 points, including consecutive 3s that gave Atlanta its biggest lead, 71-59, with just over 9 minutes left. The Magic fought back with an 8-0 spurt, and Ryan Anderson had a chance to give the Magic their first lead since the opening minutes with an open look from outside the stripe.

He missed, and the Magic never caught up with Atlanta after playing from behind nearly the entire game. Williams gave Atlanta's struggling offense a boost with 10 points, hitting a couple of big 3s.

Kirk Hinrich scored on a drive with just over 3 minutes to go, somehow getting the shot over Howard. But the Atlanta guard went up so high, he came down awkwardly on his right knee. He struggled back down the court, but collapsed after Gilbert Arenas was clobbered on a drive to the basket.

Hinrich was carried to the locker room, his arms draped around two Atlanta trainers so he didn't put any pressure on his leg. The Hawks said he had a strained hamstring and would undergo an MRI on Friday to determine to extent of the injury.

While the offense wobbled much of the night, ending up at just 39 percent (31 of 79) from the field, Atlanta certainly worked harder at the defensive end. The Hawks, after giving up 11 3-pointers in Game 5, held the Magic to just 5 of 19 from long range.

"It wasn't perfect. It wasn't pretty," Horford said. "But we just willed ourselves to victory. Sometimes you have to do that."

NOTES: Turkoglu and Atlanta's Zaza Pachulia were called for flagrant fouls in the third quarter. ... The Hawks won seven out of 10 against the Magic this season. ... Orlando hasn't been sent home this early since a four-game sweep by Detroit in the opening round in 2007.

THE FACTS: Revenge is sweet for the Atlanta Hawks.

Joe Johnson scored 25 points and added 10 rebounds and Jamal Crawford added 19 as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Orlando Magic 84-81 Thursday night at Philips Arena to win the first-round series 4-2. The series win avenged Atlanta's embarrassing four-game sweep at the hands of Orlando in last year's Eastern Conference semifinal.

Dwight Howard had his usual double-double -- a game-high 25 points and 15 rebounds -- while Hedo Turkoglu chipped in 15, but it wasn't enough to force the series to a seventh game.

The Magic had two tries to tie the game in the final seconds but J.J. Redick missed an open three, then Jason Richardson's 3 at the buzzer was blocked by Atlanta forward Josh Smith as the buzzer sounded.

The fifth-seeded Hawks will advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals for the third straight season and face the top-seeded Chicago Bulls beginning Monday night at the United Center.

QUOTABLE: "Joe was really aggressive and I was going to ride him the whole night. He was going to will us to this win."

THE STAT: 14-7. Atlanta showed urgency and energy on the boards, outrebounding Orlando 14-7 on the offensive glass. The Hawks' 10-1 edge in the first half allowed them to go into the locker room with a 42-36 lead despite shooting 34.8 percent and only 18.2 percent from three (2-for-11).

TURNING POINT: With 4:02 remaining in the third quarter, Marvin Williams entered the game for Josh Smith. The Magic had cut the Hawks' lead from 10 to two with an 11-3 run. Williams immediately hit a trey, sparking an Atlanta 14-6 run over the next 3:31, to re-open a 10-point lead to start the fourth quarter, stemming the tide.

QUOTABLE II: "It's a frustrating finish. They rebounded well tonight and we didn't. J.J. had a wide open look but it just didn't go in. It's a bad feeling to let a team outwork you and they did tonight."

HOT: Johnson chose the right time to set his series high for field goals made, going 10-for-25. Johnson shook off a 1-for-8 first quarter to shoot 9-for-17 (52.3 percent) over the final three, including 6-for-13 in the second half. Johnson had made a combined 8-for-27 in the previous two games and was 2-for-12 in Game 5. In the final stanza Thursday night, Johnson hit three of his five shot, including a key reverse lay-up with 1:16 remaining that gave Atlanta an 82-77 lead and proved to be the decisive points.

NOT: Redick had a forgettable series from behind the arc, shooting 1-for-15. He was 0-for-3 in Game 6, including missing an open look that would have tied the game with 3.9 seconds left.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Atlanta forward Al Horford didn't have a great shooting night (3-for-9) but still did plenty to fill up his stats column. He shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, and had team-highs for rebounds (12), offensive rebounds (four), and assists (six), as well as blocking a shot.

GOOD MOVE: The Atlanta Hawks didn't abandon the double-team on Howard but were more selective in how they double-teamed, choosing to delay then attack. Kirk Hinrich's attacks led to three turnovers in a 4:30 span of the first quarter.

BAD MOVE: Orlando Magic forward Ryan Anderson let his temper get in the way at an inopportune time early in the second quarter. A minute in, right after Johnson went to the bench for a rest, Anderson made an ill-advised challenge of a Crawford 3 from deep in the corner in front of the Hawks bench. He was whistled for a foul as the shot went in, although contact seemed minimal. He then voiced his displeasure and received a technical foul. Crawford made both free throws. The Magic found themselves going from three down to eight down while Johnson rested.

NOTABLE: CNN founder Ted Turner was among those in attendance...Hinrich left the game in the fourth quarter with a strained right hamstring. He was injured after making a driving jumper inside of three minutes. He is scheduled for an MRI on Friday morning...Atlanta shot 93.3 percent from the foul line, converting 14-for-15 attempts. The Hawks came into the game shooting 71.2 percent for the series..Orlando's 81 points on Thursday night matched their season-low in Philips Arena. The Magic averaged 82.6 points a game in five games at Philips this season and lost all of them. They averaged 89.8 against the Hawks at Amway Center.
