Mavericks-Trail Blazers Preview

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) If the Trail Blazers demonstrated anything this season, it's that they're not about to let a little challenge throw them off.

Portland has become adept at surpassing expectations.

But the ultimate test of the team's resolve will come Thursday night, when the Trail Blazers face elimination trailing 3-2 in their first-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks.

"When you get in these loser-out games, sometimes everybody tries to do it all, and then you get out of character," guard Brandon Roy said on Wednesday. "So the biggest thing tomorrow is that we stay in character and don't panic if they get up two points or we're up two. We need to play within our game plan like we've done all season, and we can beat this team."

Perhaps nothing demonstrates the Blazers' ability to deal with adversity more than their last win in the series. Down 67-44 in the third quarter, Roy led his team on a stunning comeback for an 84-82 Game 4 victory on Saturday.

Roy, a three-time All-Star who had been troubled by his knees all season and came on as a reserve, finished with 24 points - 18 in the fourth quarter.

For Roy, there was satisfaction in the performance given what he had gone through.

In early December, it became apparent that something was amiss for Roy, the face of the franchise. It was later learned that the cartilage in both of his knees was so depleted that he was nearly playing bone-on-bone.

While the condition is something that will likely dog him for the rest of his career, Roy opted to have arthroscopic surgery on both knees in January. All told, he missed 35 regular-season games.

When Roy returned from surgery, LaMarcus Aldridge had taken over as the team's top playmaker, and second-year guard Wesley Matthews had taken his spot in the starting rotation. Roy's minutes were tightly controlled off the bench.

As they had with other key injuries - most notably to centers Greg Oden and Marcus Camby - the Blazers picked themselves up and moved on. They made the necessarily adjustments, and helped themselves by adding forward Gerald Wallace from Charlotte at the trade deadline, to wind up the sixth seed in the Western Conference.

Dallas, the third seed, took control of the series with a 93-82 victory at American Airlines Center on Monday night in Game 5. The Mavs caught the Blazers off guard with the emergence of Tyson Chandler and by going to the zone.

While the Mavericks have seen the steady play of Dirk Nowitzki all series long, they've also managed to compliment him with a different player each game, ranging from Jason Kidd to Peja Stojakovic and Jason Terry, and finally Chandler, who had 14 points and 20 rebounds in Game 5.

The Mavericks are hoping to overcome their recent history of wilting in the playoffs.

Since the start of the 2006 NBA Finals - which the Mavs lost in seven games to Miami after taking a 2-0 series lead - Dallas has gone just 2-18 on the road in the postseason.

Dallas has been eliminated in the first round in three of the past four seasons.

"We know what we gotta do. We're a veteran team. If we don't have to play a Game 7, then we don't want to play a Game 7," forward Shawn Marion said. "That's our mentality and that's what we gotta do."

The Blazers must improve in several areas - and quick. They've been unable to deal effectively with the Mavs' pick-and-roll. They've sent Nowitzki to the free throw line too often. And, aside from Roy's big breakout, they've seen too little noise from their own bench.

Portland has never overcome a 3-2 deficit to win a playoff series, and the team has been unable to get beyond the first round for the previous two seasons.

But they certainly have home court advantage.

The Trail Blazers have won each time the Mavs have visited their building this season, twice in the regular season and twice so far in the playoffs.

Portland has won 12 of its last 13 at the Rose Garden. Overall against the Mavericks, the Blazers are 46-18 all-time in Portland, and 8-1 in playoff games.

It's likely that all eyes Thursday will be on Roy, and whether he can stage another comeback - this time not just to win a game, but to save a series.

"I don't think it's any secret that I've got to play well. And not only play well, I've got to be more aggressive," Roy said. "When I'm more aggressive it puts pressure on Dallas' defense to game plan and figure out how to stop me, and then I think it give other guys easier shots.

"My goal tomorrow is to go all-out and be as aggressive as I can."

Mavs eliminate Blazers, ready for Lakers

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The Dallas Mavericks have had trouble in the playoffs in recent years, so Dirk Nowitzki didn't want to take too much away from conquering the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round.

Not with the Los Angeles Lakers looming.

"Once you've been in the playoffs for a number of years, you want to win it all. We understand that to win it all you have to take the first step and that's winning in the first round," Nowitzki said. "We feel good about that, but we know we have a long way to go. Now we'll see the defending champions so we have our hands full."

Nowitzki had 33 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Mavs hold off the Blazers 103-96 in Game 6 on Thursday night. Next up is the two-time defending champion Lakers.

Before this season, the Mavs had won just a single playoff series since reaching the NBA finals for the first and only time in 2006. They'd been bounced in the first round in three of the previous four years.

Since the start of the 2006 NBA finals - which the Mavs lost in six games to Miami after taking a 2-0 series lead - Dallas had gone just 2-18 on the road in the postseason.

Until Thursday at the Rose Garden.

"Not a lot of people picked us to win this series, and not a lot of people are going to pick us to win the next series," Nowitzki said. "We're just going to go out there and keep competing, play smart and play off each other the way we have all season. And we'll see what happens."

The Blazers led by as many as 12 points early after Gerald Wallace went on a tear with 13 first-quarter points. But Wallace left the game for much of the second quarter with a sore back and Portland surrendered the lead.

Wallace returned and finished with 32 points and 12 rebounds. LaMarcus Aldridge added 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Wallace's fast-break dunk narrowed it to 86-85 with 5:24 to go, but Jason Kidd answered with a 3-pointer and Terry added a step-back jumper for the Mavericks.

After Wallace made a pair of free throws, Aldridge missed two for Portland and Shawn Marion's hook made it 93-87 for Dallas.

Jason Terry added a jumper to put the Mavs ahead 95-89 with 1:42 to go. He finished with 22 points.

"No words can explain how we feel tonight," said Brandon Roy, who powered the Blazers' stunning comeback in a Game 4 victory. "It's over. There's no NIT in the NBA. It's over, it's tough."

The Blazers went cold when Wallace headed to the locker room with lower back tightness, and the Mavericks went on a 16-4 run to tie it at 35.

Dallas extended its lead to 47-41 on Nowitzki's dunk with 1:10 left, and the Mavs closed the half ahead 52-43 after Terry's 3-pointer.

THE FACTS: Dirk Nowitzki scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Jason Terry came off the bench for 22 points and eight assists as Dallas defeated Portland 103-96 Thursday night to wrap up their first-round playoff series at the Rose Garden. The Mavericks won the series four games to two and became the first team to break through on the opponent's homecourt in the 10 games the teams have played this season. Gerald Wallace led Portland with a career playoff-high 32 points and 12 rebounds while LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 points and 10 boards for the Trail Blazers.

QUOTABLE: "The way the game started was tough. Getting down 12 early, that's some real adversity, but everybody stuck together. Nobody hung their heads. Everybody kept encouraging each other. We played possession by possession, as the game went on, we gained momentum. They made a run in the fourth. We've had teams make runs at us all year, but there wasn't going to be a miracle tonight."

THE STAT: Dallas made 8 of its first 30 shots (.267) and trailed 31-19 early in the second quarter. From that point, the Mavericks were 31 for 48 (.646) to finish at .500 for the game.

TURNING POINT: The Mavericks, leading 59-52 midway through the second half, went on a 10-1 run to open up a 69-53 advantage, and the Blazers were in catch-up mode the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "This whole series, any time we made a mistake, they made us pay. Tonight, they made big shot after shot. Last game, it was offensive rebounding. The goal was to get back to Dallas (for Game 7). I felt if we could do that we could win that game, but we didn't. So we end the way we ended the last two years."

INSIDE THE ARENA: For the pregame introductions of the home team, the Blazers dropped a gigantic tent-like structure from the Diamondvision scoreboard, with images of all the Portland starters. The sellout crowd ate it up.

GOOD MOVE: With Dallas clinging to a 91-87 lead and 2 1/2 minutes to play, Shawn Marion posted up Brandon Roy and scored on a jump hook. "The biggest play of the game," Carlisle said.

BAD MOVE: Though it wasn't his fault, Wallace's back seizing up late in the first quarter was costly to Portland, which had a 27-19 lead after the first period. With Wallace sitting out, Dallas outscored the Blazers 33-16 in the second quarter to take a 52-43 halftime advantage.

ROOKIE WATCH: Portland's Chris Johnson got five minutes of first-half duty and scored on a dunk off a Roy pass.

NOTABLE: Portland, the No. 6 seed in the West, has never won a playoff series when seeded sixth or lower (0-13).
