ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) On the brink of elimination, Magic players were still lamenting what has been plain to see for anyone watching Orlando's first-round playoff series against Atlanta.

They can't put the ball in the basket.

"It's the wrong time to be in a collective shooting slump," Magic guard J.J. Redick said.

Now facing a 3-1 deficit in the best-of-seven series, time has just about run out for the Magic to shake off their shooting woes. The series swings back to Orlando Tuesday for Game 5 with the Magic on the brink of suffering their first opening round playoff exit since 2007.

History is not on Orlando's side.

Only eight teams in NBA history have won a best-of-seven series after falling into a 3-1 hole. The Magic have barely shown flashes of the team that averaged 99 points per game during the regular season and was in the top of the league in both field goal and 3-point shooting percentage.

Aside from Dwight Howard, who is leading all playoff scorers averaging 32.2 points per game and shooting 66 percent from the field, Orlando is a shell of itself.

The Magic are averaging just 90.3 points and three of their go-to outside threats - Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu and Redick - are all shooting less than 35 percent from the field, none more than 23 percent from beyond the arc.

As a team, the Orlando is shooting 40 percent from the field and just 20 percent from the 3-point line in the series. The Hawks are at 44 and 39 percent, respectively.

It is almost a complete reverse from Orlando's Eastern Conference semifinals sweep of Atlanta last season when the Magic shot 53 percent overall (39 percent from three-point range), compared to 37 percent from the field and (29 percent from beyond the arc) for the Hawks.

Coach Stan Van Gundy said his team got makable shots in Game 4, but that the mental side of things is what must be overcome.

"On an individual basis as guys are struggling, the mentality becomes 'I gotta get myself going,"' he said. "And so guys are really hunting out shots and I think taking tougher ones because of that...You've gotta trust the teammates instead of the idea that we need some heroics."

In Sunday's 88-85 loss, the Magic set a new NBA low for 3-point percentage by a team in a playoff game, connecting on just 2 for 23 attempts. Some of that is poor shot selection, but the Hawks defense has certainly played a role and fueled their confidence.

"We're doing a great job on the 3-point line," Hawks forward Josh Smith said. "We've got to keep that up, just keep doing a good job at everything: Helping each other at defensive end, share ball at the offensive end. If we do that, think we'll be OK."

Atlanta also remains content to live with Howard's big numbers and have defended the perimeter just well enough to throw Orlando off. It's also had an unbelievable effort from reserve Jamal Crawford.

With his team-high 25-point effort in Game 4 Crawford became the first bench player to score 20 or more points in the first four games of a series since Kevin McHale did it for Boston in 1991.

There were some trouble signs for Atlanta in Game 4, though.

Aside from letting the Magic back the game after building a 16-point lead, Atlanta also at times reverted back into the isolation-based offensive sets that have gotten it into trouble at times. They also did a poor job down the stretch of managing possessions.

It's why Hawks coach Larry Drew said ending the series as soon as possible is paramount.

"It's very important," Drew said. "I'm always talking about this team growing. To me, them positioning themselves like they are right now to go into Orlando and to finish this thing off, that's a huge step in our growth process...Particularly after what they did to us last year...it left a bad taste in our mouths."

The wildcard in Game 5 may center on who wasn't there in the previous game for both teams.

Magic starter Jason Richardson and Hawks' reserve Zaza Pachulia will both return to action after serving one-game suspensions for their altercation near the end of Game 3.

Richardson has also struggled to score in this series, but his presence at least increases the chances that somebody in a Magic uniform will have a good shooting night. Like Howard, he doesn't feel it's the best approach for the Magic to go into Tuesday thinking about a "must-win."

"That's the kind of team we have and the type of guys we have. If we're uptight and worried about this or worried about that, we never play at our best. We're at our best when we're playing loose."

Pachulia's return could be more vital, as he has done one of the most serviceable jobs off the bench banging around underneath with Howard. He said now is not the time to admire what they've accomplished so far, though.

"We still have one more game to win," Pachulia said. "But it definitely will give us a great advantage to finish this series Tuesday. The last two years, we went to 7 game series it was very hard. We didn't have any off time to get any rest. Going to second round tired and banged up is not a good idea."

Magic extend series with 101-76 win over Hawks

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) The Orlando Magic aren't ready for their season to end just yet.

Facing their first opening round postseason exit since 2007, the Magic blew out the Atlanta Hawks 101-76 on Tuesday night.

Jason Richardson scored 17 points and J.J. Redick added 14 off the bench to lead the Magic.

The win trims Atlanta's series' lead to 3-2 and keeps alive the Magic's hopes of becoming the ninth team in NBA history to win a playoff series after trailing 3-1. If they can win Game 6 Thursday in Atlanta, they would host a decisive Game 7 on Saturday.

Magic center Dwight Howard battled foul trouble throughout the night and had just one field goal, finishing with eight points and eight rebounds. Orlando didn't need his offense, though, as it broke out of a series-long shooting funk with 11 3-pointers.

"We're a good shooting team," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "This is more of us than what we showed in the first four games...This isn't an aberration. We've been doing this for four years. The first four games were the aberration."

Josh Smith scored 22 points to lead Atlanta, which shot below 40 percent for just the second time this series.

The Magic cruised in the second half, allowing Howard to log his first extended rest of the series in the fourth quarter as their lead crept above 30 points.

In a short turnaround following his team's loss in Game 4, Van Gundy preached patience over panic to his team. It paid off in a big way as Orlando was unselfish in its half court sets and passed the ball to free up its shooters.

That allowed the Magic to push the pace and keep the game up tempo. The Hawks have won every game with the Magic this season in which it kept them under 90 points.

For the second straight game the Magic's bench got some production led by Redick. It also got 11 points from Ryan Anderson and nine from Gilbert Arenas, who had erupted for 20 in Game 4.

The Hawks couldn't miss in the first four games, but were cold throughout Tuesday. They shot a series-low 36 percent overall and 25 percent from beyond the arc.

The Magic finished at just 41 percent, but hit 42 percent of their attempts from 3.

"The law of averages is eventually going to even out," Redick said. "We didn't shoot amazing tonight, but we shot very well."

But more importantly they held Atlanta sixth-man Jamal Crawford, who came in averaging a team-best 24 points, to just eight on 2 of 8 shooting.

"They had a good run," Crawford said. "They were making shots. They came out with a nothing to lose-type attitude. You could sense it and you have to tip your hat to them."

The Magic were able to coast based on what they did much earlier in the game.

Orlando put together easily its best half of the series in building a 58-35 halftime lead.

Everyone was involved as the Magic, who led by as many as 24 points in the half, moved the ball in the half court to open up great looks from the perimeter. Following another cold start, Orlando picked things up in the second quarter and finished the half shooting 45 percent and 46 percent from beyond the arc (6 for 13).

Richardson had 12 by the break.

Smith paced Atlanta with 11 first-half points, but the Hawks struggled on offense, going 13 for 38 (34 percent) - making just two 3s. They also had eight turnovers that led to nine of Orlando's points.

The Magic were leading 10-8 when Howard picked up his second personal foul of the night with 5:40 left in the first, but Orlando closed with a 16-5 run without him. Redick had the hot hand, going 5 for 5 in the period and scoring the Magic's last 11 points.

Atlanta was just 3 for 19 in the first quarter.

Hawks coach Larry Drew said though they would have liked to close out the series Tuesday, he doesn't think his team has was rattled by the lopsided night.

"We're in a situation where we still feel good about ourselves," Drew said. "We'll go back home. We still have an opportunity. Our fans are gonna be behind us, just as they're fans were behind them. So we're gonna put this game behind us as fast as we can."

Likewise, Van Gundy said everyone in the Magic's locker room knew Tuesday night was just the first step in a long road back.

"I think our guys have the right mindset right now," he said. "I don't think there'll be any celebrating. I don't think we'll even celebrate five or 10 minutes...We know what we're capable of and we're going to have to bring that same thing."

Notes: The Magic set a playoff franchise record for fewest turnovers in a game with six. ... Tuesday marked just the second time in the series that the Hawks didn't hold a double-digit lead at some point during the first half.

THE FACTS: They came. They shot. They conquered.

The Orlando Magic started their journey to defy the odds Tuesday night by securing one more game in the best of seven series with their 101-76 blowout win against the Atlanta Hawks.

With so much on the line -- the series, the season, and the future of Dwight Howard -- the Magic came out to a strong start and never let up on the Hawks without the help of their All-Star center who sat out quickly after two early fouls in the first quarter.

Everything that had become expected in this series was defied. The Magic shot better (41 percent, 42.3 from beyond the arc), they shut down Jamal Crawford and Joe Johnson (combined for 13 points and 20 percent shooting) and they allowed Howard to get a drink of water (he played 29 minutes compared to 46, 48, 45 and 42 in the first four games).

It was the first time this series that the entire Magic team made a collective effort to win a game.

QUOTABLE: "The Biggest thing is we played with tremendous focus and intensity, really from the start to finish and that's what it's going to take. It'll be much, much, much harder on Thursday and we'll need to play better than we did tonight to get a win there."

THE STAT: With just eight points and eight rebounds, it was the first time all year Howard finished a game without double figures in either shooting or rebounding. Ironically, the Magic fell to the Hawks 103-93 in Game 1 despite Howard's record 46 points but trampled over Atlanta and went on a 16-4 run while Howard sat on the bench after he picked up his second foul.

TURNING POINT: With such a dominating performance, it was what happened before tip off that shifted things for the Magic. Usually known for his pessimism, Van Gundy had a positive message for his team after Monday's practice: "This series isn't over." And Howard's message before the game -- "We can do it. We can make shots. We can win the series" -- seemed to resonate.

Following Howard and Van Gundy's motivation, the Magic had an air of confidence in the locker room pre-game and it translated onto the court. They came out to a strong and fast start, finishing the first quarter 26-13 and holding the Hawks to 15.8 percent shooting.

QUOTABLE II: "Their ability to shoot the 3-point shot and their all-around game inside the paint was key for them tonight. They needed their 'A-Game' in order to win this game and force a Game 6 and they played their hearts out tonight. I tip my hat off to them, but we are still on a mission and we still have something to accomplish on Thursday. Our destiny is in our own hands."

HOT: J.J. Redick looked like he was in a Duke jersey as he hoisted up jumper after jumper. His 11 points on 6-for-8 shooting doesn't depict the impact his hot shooting had on getting his teammates and the crowd amped and into the game early on.

NOT: Despite averaging 24 points and shooting 47.1 percent in the first four games of the series, Crawford was held to just eight points on 25 percent shooting and only hit one of his four 3-point attempts.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Jason Richardson led Orlando not only on the stat line, but his multiple 3-pointers pushed the team's momentum throughout the game. He finished with 17 points and three rebounds on 6-of-14 shooting and 50 percent from beyond the arc with no turnovers.

QUOTABLE III: "There was nothing to talk about. In this type of game, in this type of situation it was win or go home so we weren't going to leave anything to chance. We had to go out there and play the hardest we ever have this year and leave everything on the court."

NOTABLE: After shooting an abysmal 21.9 percent from the 3-point line this series, seven Magic players hit 3s in Game 5 (11 total for 42.3 percent). Surprisingly, Redick didn't even attempt one from beyond the arc.
