Trail Blazers-Mavericks Preview

DALLAS (AP) As the highest-seeded Western Conference team to win its playoff opener, the Dallas Mavericks should be feeling pretty good about themselves.

They don't.

Sure, the Mavs are happy to be up 1-0 on the Portland Trail Blazers going into Game 2 on Tuesday night, and happier still to have won with their defense.

But they also remember what happened last year, when they got giddy about winning a grind-it-out opener at home against San Antonio. Dallas got smacked around in Game 2 and wound up also losing Games 3 and 4 on the way to being eliminated in six games.

"They really came out smoking in Game 2 and were all over us," Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki said Monday. "They were just more ready, I felt like, and then we had to react, and it was kind of too late. That's what the Blazers are going to do tomorrow, they're going to leave it all out there. We've got to be ready for the first hit and be aggressive also, and just go from there."

Last year's Game 2 meltdown was no isolated incident. It continued a trend that stretches back to the high point in franchise history, when Dallas took a 2-0 lead on Miami in the 2006 NBA finals.

The Mavs followed that win with a loss and eventually lost the series. Starting there, they've followed eight of their last 10 postseason victories with a loss. Both exceptions came in a 2009 first-round series against the Spurs, which happens to be the only series they've won since reaching the '06 finals.

It's a bad habit they know they have to break.

"It starts in practice," said guard Jason Terry, who along with Nowitzki are the only players left from the '06 club. "If you've watched us the last two days, we're treating this as Game 1 all over again. I mean, we came in, we prepared, we went at each other hard. Everybody was pretty in-tune about the game plan. It's all about focusing in on the task. Nothing else matters."

A lot of strange things happened in the opener of this series, from Dallas' Jason Kidd scoring 24 points - three more than he had in any game this season - to Portland center Marcus Camby having more assists than Kidd.

Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan found it especially curious that the Mavericks took 29 free throws while his team took only 13. The disparity was even more mind-boggling considering Dallas scored only one basket in the paint in the second half. He voiced his complaints about the officiating, and on Monday was fined $35,000 by the league office.

McMillan also was perturbed by his club's wayward 3-point shooting (2 of 16) and the poor production from Gerald Wallace (4 of 13, eight points) and Brandon Roy (1 of 7, two points).

"For the most part, we had open looks," McMillan said. "We're going to get open looks the way their defense plays. We've got to knock those shots down."

The Blazers lost out on hustle plays, too, things that don't always show up in the stat sheet but are glaring on tape. That tape was rolling before they hit the practice court Monday.

"It just looked like they wanted it more than we did," McMillan said. "Those are plays that you must make in playoff games to give yourself a chance to win."

The flip side to all this is that despite doing so many things wrong, Portland was within a basket in the final minutes and only lost 89-81. The Blazers figure that if they can clean up even only a few of these trouble spots then they can be headed home with a split.

For Blazers star LaMarcus Aldridge, Dallas actually is home. He went to his mom's place for a home-cooked meal Sunday night, and has enjoyed being around friends and family. It certainly hasn't detracted from his focus because he scored 27 points in the opener. He also helped pester Nowitzki into making only 7 of 20 shots, a ratio Portland would gladly take again.

"Being at home hasn't really been an issue for LaMarcus," McMillan said. "He's focused on what he needs to do."

Peja, Kidd lead Mavs past Blazers; Dallas up 2-0

DALLAS (AP) The Portland Trail Blazers must feel like they are in an NBA time warp. First they got beaten by Jason Kidd, now Kidd and Peja Stojakovic.

Even the Dallas Mavericks are feeling the retro mood. They're up 2-0 in a playoff series for the first time since 2006.

Stojakovic tied his career playoff best with five 3-pointers and had 21 points, and Kidd continued his surprising scoring surge with 18 points, powering the Mavericks to a 101-89 victory on Tuesday night in Game 2 of their first-round series.

Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas with 33 points, but was practically a complementary player. He was at his best after the 30-something, former All-Stars built the lead, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter - including the team's final 11 - to help the Mavericks keep the Trail Blazers from ever making a serious push. He scored 18 in the fourth quarter of Game 1.

"We're never sure which two or three guys we're going to get hot, but we need contributions from a lot of different guys to be successful and that's what we got tonight," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said.

Portland had a lot of things go right, from LaMarcus Aldridge scoring 24 to Gerald Wallace and Wesley Matthews regaining their scoring touch after struggling in the opener. But the Trail Blazers got only 11 points from their bench, none in the second half. And while they were limiting Nowitzki to 5 of 15 shooting through three quarters, former All-Stars Kidd and Stojakovic were lighting them up.

The third-seeded Mavs can snicker about doing something the higher-seeded Spurs and Lakers couldn't: win the first two games on their home court. Now the Western Conference's best road team this season will head to Portland for Game 3 on Thursday night, and Game 4 on Saturday.

"We've been doing that second-scorer-by committee (all season)," Nowitzki said. "Our bigs did a good job of battling Aldridge all game, and we've got to do more of the same on Thursday."

Dallas fans know not to start thinking "sweep" just yet. They made that mistake midway through the '06 NBA finals, only to see their team lose that series in six games. Nowitzki warned "this series is far from over," which could also be a nod to Portland having won both matchups on its home court this season.

"I think we'll go home and have our crowd behind us," Aldridge said. "Hopefully that will bring us more energy and we'll play better."

Before this game, Portland coach Nate McMillan said, "We've got to be the aggressors," and his team was in the first half, trailing for a mere 36 seconds. But their lead at the break was only 52-50, and the second half proved to be a completely different story.

Kidd hit a go-ahead 3-pointer on Dallas' first possession and the Mavs wouldn't trail again. Kidd followed with a jumper just inside the arc, a layup and a bank shot - nine straight points that were part of an 18-5 spurt since the final minute of the first half.

"He had his confidence and he was looking for (his shot)," McMillan said.

Dallas did little wrong the rest of the way. The Mavs held Aldridge to eight points in the second half and spread around their scoring. They also protected the ball, going without a turnover the final 28:42. They tied a franchise playoff-best with just six turnovers.

Portland went from scoring 28 points in the second quarter to scoring 37 in the second half. Fourth quarters have especially been a problem for the Trail Blazers.

"Every time we had a chance, we'd turn the ball over or make a big mistake and they ended up closing out the game," Aldridge said.

Dallas signed Stojakovic in January after he was waived by Toronto. He'd hardly played because of injuries, but the Mavericks envisioned him as another scorer coming off the bench in the playoffs. It took all of two games for that gamble to pay off.

He scored 10 points in the first half, most during a flurry that kept things close in the second quarter. After Nowitzki missed three straight open jumpers in the third quarter, Stojakovic came in and still had his touch. He hit two 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter that brought the crowd to their feet.

"I was able to make a couple of shots and that gave me confidence," Stojakovic said. "With Dirk, J-Kidd and (Jason Terry) on the floor, they draw so much attention that we can move the ball around and get good opportunities."

Kidd scored 24 points in the opener, hitting six 3-pointers. McMillan wanted his team to wear down the 38-year-old point guard, covering him more tightly on the perimeter and even making it tough for him to bring the ball up the court, but it didn't work. He made 3 of 6 behind the arc this game.

Wallace and Andre Miller each scored 18 points for Portland. Matthews added 13. But Nicolas Batum's 10 points and a free throw by Rudy Fernandez were all the points by reserves. Brandon Roy played 8 minutes and missed the only shot he took. The five backups who got into the game were a combined 4 for 11.

Officiating was all the buzz pregame, from McMillan seeking more calls to justify his $35,000 fine for critical comments he made after Game 1, to Dallas discovering its playoff nemesis Dan Crawford was working the game. The Mavs had lost 17 of the last 18 times he'd worked one of its playoff games. It turned out not to matter too much, not with the way the old-timers were scoring.

NOTES: This was the seventh time Stojakovic has made five 3s in a playoff game, the first since 2008. ... Dallas is now 3-18 in playoff games called by Crawford. ... Portland fell to 2-15 in its last 17 road playoff games. ... The Blazers have lost consecutive games for the first time since March 11-12.

THE FACTS: Dirk Nowitzki scored a game-high 33 points Tuesday and Dallas played a strong all-around game to defeat Portland 101-89 and seize a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven first-round series. The No. 3 seed Mavericks shot well from 3-point range, held their own in the paint and on the glass and kept their mistakes to a minimum. LaMarcus Aldridge led the No. 6 seed Trail Blazers with 24 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

QUOTABLE: "This series is far from over. They play well at home, they make shots, and they play tough D, so we've got to be prepared for a tough game on Thursday."

THE STAT: Powered by Peja Stojakovic with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting (5-for-10 on 3-pointers), the Dallas bench outscored Portland's reserves by a 39-11 margin. Jason Terry also scored in double figures off the pine with 10. Nicolas Batum scored all but one of the Blazers' bench points. Portland didn't have any bench points in the second half.

TURNING POINT: Stojakovic sank two of his 3-pointers during a 10-4 run midway through the fourth quarter, widening the Mavs' lead to 88-80 with 6:04 to play.

QUOTABLE II: "They did a lot of switching on the pick-and-rolls. Dirk was always getting a mismatch, so they doubled on him and I was able to get open and was able to make those shots."

QUOTABLE III: "We know this is a good 3-point shooting team. Tonight we didn't double-team as much because of the 3-ball. ... The basketball is getting to the paint, which is forcing the defense to collapse, and we're losing these guys on the 3-point line."

HOT: Taking advantage of the fact that the Blazers were still sagging off him, despite his 24-point effort in Game 1, Jason Kidd was on fire to start the second half. He scored the Mavericks' first nine points of the third quarter with a 3-pointer, a long jumper, a driving layup and a banked 10-footer. He finished the game with 18 points, eight assists and four rebounds. He was 7-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-6 behind the arc.

NOT: Portland guard Brandon Roy continues to struggle. He played just under eight minutes and didn't register a point, assist or rebound. He missed his only field-goal attempt and both free throws.

GOOD MOVE: Dallas took excellent care of the basketball, committing zero turnovers in the second half and just six in the game to match a franchise postseason record (four other occasions, most recently against Phoenix in 2006). The Mavs' last miscue occurred at the 4:42 mark of the second quarter.

BAD MOVE: Mavericks center Brendan Haywood had a chance to tie the game before halftime, but badly bricked both free-throw attempts with 0.3 seconds left on the clock and Portland took a 52-50 lead into the locker room. He missed two more in the final seconds of the third quarter. During the regular season, Haywood shot a career-worst 36.2 percent at the stripe.

NOTABLE: Portland center Marcus Camby made a rare 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer at the 9:40 mark of the fourth quarter. It was his first triple of the season and just the 19th of his 15-year career, including postseason play. ... After getting outscored 46-18 in the paint in Game 1, Dallas trimmed the deficit to 38-36 in Game 2. ... Nowitzki is 28-for-30 at the free-throw line in the series. ... The battle of the boards was a 37-37 draw.
