Knicks-Celtics Preview

BOSTON (AP) Toney Douglas played well when he replaced an injured Chauncey Billups during the regular season.

There's much more at stake now.

In only his third season, Douglas said he's prepared if, as expected, Billups, the 13-year veteran point guard, misses Tuesday night's Game 2 of the New York Knicks' first-round playoff series with the Boston Celtics with a sore left knee.

Billups is "very questionable," coach Mike D'Antoni said Monday.

If he is out, it will be up to Douglas to direct an offense led by Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony.

"I'm ready," Douglas said Monday. "The hardest part is getting my body ready for that situation."

Billups was hurt late in Boston's 87-85 victory Sunday night when his leg "buckled on me." He limped off the court with 51 seconds left and didn't return.

"It's really sore" he said after watching practice in street clothes. "At this point in the season, this is the worst thing that could possibly happen, getting hurt in the first game of a tough series. I know my team needs me and it's just frustrating."

D'Antoni said it's much more likely that Billups will play at home Friday in Game 3 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers sees a possible trap for his team if Billups is sidelined.

"If you take someone lightly in the playoffs, then shame on you," he said. "Douglas has had a terrific year. (The Knicks) went on a winning streak when Douglas was playing and Chauncey was out. But I don't think that'll affect the way we approach the game. We just have to worry about us."

Douglas averaged 16.8 points and 6.8 assists in the six games Billups missed with a left thigh bruise from March 2-10. The Knicks split the first two then won three straight before losing again.

But Douglas had never played a postseason game until Sunday. He finished with eight points and two assists in 25 minutes, but made a 3-pointer that gave sixth-seeded New York an 85-82 lead with 38 seconds remaining.

"We have confidence in him," Stoudemire said. "I feel like that big shot gave him confidence."

An alley-oop basket by Kevin Garnett with 37 seconds left made it 85-84 before Anthony was called for an offensive foul with 20 seconds to go as he jockeyed for position with Paul Pierce. Ray Allen hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play after Garnett stuck out his right leg and tripped Douglas - laying him flat out on the court - as Douglas tried to guard Allen.

There was no whistle, only the loud cheers of the home crowd.

"Allen made a tough shot. Tony got knocked down," D'Antoni said. "Sometimes at the end of games they let it go. It'd be nice if they called it on 'Melo that they call it at the other end also."

The third-seeded Celtics will also be missing a starter, but that was expected. Shaquille O'Neal sat out the last six regular-season games and the first playoff game with a left calf injury after playing just one of the previous 28 with a sore left leg.

"He's got a different brace now and we've got two (days off) after Game 2 that he can practice, hopefully," Rivers said.

Jermaine O'Neal had a big game in his place in Game 1 with 12 points on 6-for-6 shooting and four blocks in 22 minutes. He missed much of the season with a knee injury.

Until Garnett denied him the ball late in the game, Stoudemire hurt the Celtics with long jumpers and powerful dunks. But Anthony struggled to shake Boston's tight defense.

He was whistled for two quick fouls and sat out the last 10:32 of the first quarter. He scored his first 12 points in the second quarter but just three in the second half when he missed 10 of 11 shots, including a 3-pointer with 2 seconds to go.

"I couldn't buy a bucket last night, especially in the second half," he said. "Shots were going in and out. Shots were short. But I know I can make those shots. They're the same shots I would take over and over."

D'Antoni joked about what it might take for Anthony to get untracked.

"Just maybe get Pierce off him," he said. "He's fine. I'll be surprised if it happens twice."

Unlike the Knicks, the Celtics will have their starting point guard. Rajon Rondo had 10 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in the opener. Douglas, quicker than Billups, might do a better job on him.

"We have to be even more focused," Pierce said. "We haven't done a good job when star players sit throughout the course of the season. I don't know if we've taken it for granted or taken them too lightly when they're missing a player, thinking the team wouldn't play as hard, but we've lost quite a few games with other teams' stars missing."

Still, the loss of Billups would leave the Knicks thin at that position.

"It'll affect us big time," said Anthony, who came to the Knicks with Billups on Feb. 22 in a trade with Denver. "We're losing one of our soldiers, one of our leaders. At the same time, it's go time, it's playoff time. We've got guys that have to step up."

Celtics overcome Melo's 42 for 2-0 lead on Knicks

BOSTON (AP) Amare Stoudemire didn't play in the second half and Chauncey Billups didn't play at all, and still the Boston Celtics needed more late heroics from one of their Big 3 to beat the New York Knicks in Game 2 of their first-round series.

"We were lucky to win," coach Doc Rivers said after Boston overcame Carmelo Anthony's 42 points in a 96-93 victory on Tuesday night.

Kevin Garnett sank the go-ahead basket with 14 seconds left then stole the ball with 4 seconds remaining as the Knicks gave the Celtics all they could handle in falling into an 0-2 hole in the series.

"I probably (have) never been more proud of a team and how they battled the circumstances," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said, "how hard they played and how tough they played."

Billups had a strained left knee and his status for Game 3 on Friday night at Madison Square Garden is uncertain. Stoudemire had back spasms but expects to be back when the best-of-seven series resumes.

Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with a career playoff-high 30 points, 14 of them in the first quarter when he kept driving to the basket.

"I tried to attack Game 1," he said, "It's just (that) my lanes were getting blocked."

Anthony matched his career playoff high for points and set a new high with 17 rebounds as the Knicks held a 53-37 advantage on the boards. Toney Douglas had 14 points in place of Billups.

Paul Pierce had 20 points after missing his first five shots, and Ray Allen, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer in Boston's 87-85 win in the opener, scored 18.

Now the sixth-seeded Knicks, who have tested the third-seeded Celtics, must win at least one of two at home to bring the series back to Boston.

"The Celtics didn't do anything special," Anthony said. "They won two games on their home court. Now it's our turn to go to our home court and try to do the same thing."

Rivers wasn't raving about his team's play, either.

"We didn't execute very well," he said. "We played hard. ... Hard is great. Hard and smart is much better."

Garnett hit the decisive jump hook after backing Jared Jeffries into the lane.

"I wasn't really in a nice rhythm," said Garnett, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds. "I just remained calm, went to a shot I knew I could make."

Anthony was the obvious choice to shoot on New York's final possession. So Pierce and Glen Davis swarmed him when he got the ball just inches from Boston's bench, forcing him to pass to Jeffries, who tried an interior pass instead of going up with the shot.

D'Antoni said Anthony made the right play.

"He's the best at closing the game," D'Antoni said.

In the opener, though, Anthony missed a long 3-point attempt with 2 seconds left.

Garnett said he was simply reacting when he made the steal, as Jeffries hesitated momentarily.

"When I caught it my initial route was there, but I felt like KG was coming and closing down," Jeffries said. "I should have went ahead and shot the ball."

The Knicks then fouled Delonte West, who made two free throws with 0.6 seconds to go.

The Knicks had gone ahead 91-88 with 2:35 left when Anthony took a pass beyond the left arc and made a 3-pointer despite being bumped by Pierce. Pierce followed with two free throws, then both teams missed jumpers.

On the next possession, Pierce drove the lane to draw a defender and fed a wide-open Garnett for a dunk that put the Celtics on top 92-91 with 49 seconds to go.

Jeffries followed with a layup, giving New York its last lead at 93-92 with 20 seconds left.

With the score tied at 59, the Celtics went on a 15-4 run led by Pierce's seven points. Allen and Jeff Green hit 3-pointers during the surge that put Boston on top 74-63 with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

Then Anthony single-handedly brought the Knicks back by scoring their first seven points of the fourth quarter, while Boston managed only a jumper by Pierce. New York was making a game of it, down only 76-74 with 10:01 to play. At that point, Anthony had scored the Knicks' previous 13 points and 18 of 20.

After a timeout, Ronny Turiaf tied the game for the Knicks at 76 with a short jumper.

Rondo, threading his way at high speed through New York's big men, had 14 of Boston's first 18 points after scoring just 10 in Game 1. He went to the bench for a rest of the quarter with the Celtics ahead 18-11 with 3:59 left. On one play, he sprinted like a wide receiver and hauled in a long pass from Garnett ahead of the field and drove for an easy layup.

The rest of the game was far from easy for Boston, even with New York missing two of its top three players.

"In a tough game like this, coming down the stretch, coming down to the wire, I think it gives (our) guys momentum," Anthony said.

Notes: The Knicks stumbled through the first quarter until Anthony converted a three-point play, then hit a 3-pointer during a surge that pulled New York to 23-21 at the end of the first period. ... Celtics C-F Jermaine O'Neal left late in the first quarter to ice his left wrist, which the Celtics said had a mild sprain. He returned with 7:54 left in the second. ... Ronan Tynan sang the national anthem. For years he sang at New York Yankees home games. ... Through three quarters, Anthony had made 10 of 22 shots, while the rest of the Knicks were 12 for 47. ... Late in the game, Knicks fan Spike Lee was booed as he was shown on the video screen.

THE FACTS: Kevin Garnett drilled a go-ahead hook shot with 12 seconds remaining as the Boston Celtics overcame a 42-point night from Carmelo Anthony to sneak by the shorthanded New York Knicks 96-93 at the TD Garden. The victory gave Boston a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with a postseason career-high 30 points, and Paul Pierce scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half of the win. Anthony tied his postseason career high with his 42 points to go along with a game-high 17 rebounds, leading a valiant effort for the Knicks who fought until the end despite playing without Amar'e Stoudemire (back spasms) in the second half.

QUOTABLE: "We won the game. That's all we got out of that. They had no Stoudemire, no [Chauncey] Billups ... They played hard. We were lucky to win."

THE STAT: Anthony scored 13 straight points for the Knicks over a seven-minute stretch overlapping the third and fourth quarter. The outburst came in the midst of a 15-2 run for New York. Boston spent the majority of the rest of the game double-teaming Anthony.

TURNING POINT: New York had one last chance to take the lead after Garnett's hook, down one with the ball and 12 seconds on the clock. The Celtics forced the ball out of Anthony's hands with a double team on the wing, and the small forward passed out of the pressure to an open Jared Jeffries. Garnett quickly rotated to Jeffries and picked off an attempted pass by the power forward, while managing to call timeout for his team.

QUOTABLE II: "The Celtics didn't do anything special, they won two games on their home court. Now it's our turn to do the same thing."

HOT: Anthony -- The Knicks' newest All-Star scored 26 of his game-high 42 points in the second half, all without fellow starters Stoudemire and Billups, who sat out the game with a sprained left knee. The former Nugget also made 10-of-11 free throws and dished out six assists in a strong bounce-back performance from Game 1.

NOT: Bill Walker -- The reserve small forward brought energy to the floor with eight rebounds for the Knicks, but couldn't buy a bucket against his former team. Walker missed all 11 of his attempts and managed to score just two points in 32 minutes of action.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Director Spike Lee wore a Knicks jersey while rooting on his favorite team from courtside at TD Garden.

QUOTABLE III: "Going down the stretch, just looking at it, I probably have never been more proud of a team and how they battled the circumstances, how hard they played and how tough they played. [We were] mentally tough and gave ourselves a chance to win. We just didn't quite do it."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Ray Allen made all four of his three-point attempts on the evening on his way to a balanced line of 18 points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals. The 35-year-old has been scorching from deep in the first two games of the series, going 7-for-9 from downtown.

ROOKIE WATCH: Knicks guard Landry Fields had the first four points of his postseason career, but spent most of Game 2 watching from the sideline. For the second straight game, Fields played just five minutes in the second half.

NOTABLE: The Knicks had a considerable advantage on the glass on both ends of the floor, outrebounding Boston 53-37 overall. New York also grabbed 20 offensive boards, which led to a crucial 24 second-chance points. The extra opportunities kept New York in the game, despite shooting just 35.6 percent as a team. ... Boston had 16 fast breaks, while also limiting the Knicks to a mere four points in transition. ... New York had just 12 assists. ... Jermaine O'Neal left the game in the first quarter to receive treatment on a sprained left wrist. He returned to the game in the second half for the C's and finished with two points and three rebounds in 20 minutes. ... Stoudemire told reporters after the game his back spasms flared up during pregame warmups, before becoming unbearable to play through in the second quarter. He was optimistic about his chances to play in Game 3 in New York. ... Boston's bench struggled for the second straight game, making just 33 percent (5-for-15) of their shots, while chipping in with only 14 points overall combined.
