ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) If the Orlando Magic's 2010-11 season were likened to a fairy tale, it would probably be a mix of "The Wizard of Oz" and "Alice in Wonderland."

Back in December, the Magic's championship journey was detoured by a massive trade that altered their roster. Then, in the second half of the schedule, injuries, inconsistency and other growing pains left a team that made the NBA Finals two years ago feeling like it was trudging through some strange world.

Saturday night, familiarity returns as Orlando opens the playoffs against an Atlanta team it swept out of the Eastern Conference semifinals a year ago. But this time the Magic face a Hawks squad that has had their number this season.

"They got a lot of the same guys, but as far as the way they play against us, it's a lot different," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said of Atlanta, which has beaten Orlando in three out of four meetings in 2010-11.

The Hawks jettisoned point guard Mike Bibby in favor of Kirk Hinrich in a February trade with Washington. They also moved Jason Collins to center and Al Horford to power forward, allowing Horford a lot more flexibility on the offensive end.

Horford is averaging a career-best 15.3 points overall and 16.3 in the four games against Orlando. Hinrich, an off and on starter with the Wizards, has clearly found a groove in the Hawks' lineup. And though Collins' numbers haven't been great (4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds) against Orlando, by guarding Dwight Howard he has allowed Horford to avoid foul trouble.

Whether it was that adjustment or not, Howard and the Magic have suffered offensively against Atlanta.

As a team Orlando is averaging only 82.5 points per game, while shooting just 38 percent overall and 22 percent from the 3-point line. Those are all below its season averages of 99.2 points, 46 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3.

"That's not us. We want to be high 90s, low 100s," point guard Jameer Nelson said. "If we could score 200, that would be great."

Howard's individual output has also waned. After going 10 for 20 and scoring 27 points in the Nov. 8 win over Atlanta, he was held below 50 percent shooting in the final three games and shot just 43 percent overall.

Howard said turning that around isn't a complex proposition.

"The three games that they beat us in, the pace was slow and we played to their liking," Howard said. "In order to beat these guys we have to run and we have to move."

Hawks coach Larry Drew said their ball movement will be pivotal in replicating the regular- season success.

"You can't just set up. You have to attack them," Drew said. "Even though they have the most potent defensive player in the league down there in the middle, you have to attack them in the paint. You can't have a fear about him and we've done that so far."

For the first time in two months the Magic had 12 players available for their final two practices this week, and are hoping to have back reserve guard J.J. Redick. He missed the final 17 games with a lower abdominal strain and will get a final evaluation at the team's Saturday morning shootaround.

"If he can go, I'm going to go back to playing him," Van Gundy said. "It's a fairly easy decision based on what I saw today and the struggles we've had on the bench."

Nelson said that though this playoff run begins with only four players (Nelson, Howard, Redick and Hedo Turkoglu) that were on the roster for the NBA Finals run two years ago, he has plenty of confidence in this new group.

Forwards Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson were both with the team last season and new addition Jason Richardson started 16 games for Phoenix in its surge to the Western Conference Finals last year.

"It's fun. I've done it numerous times now, and on different teams in terms of personnel," Nelson said. "One thing I know is we have winners on this team . . . We're hard to beat when we play the right way."

And his response to Hawks players who reportedly took offense to his recent postgame comments to Chicago's Derrick Rose that Nelson would see him in Round 2?

"I didn't mean anything by it, but they can take it the way they want to take it," Nelson said. "... Am I supposed to tell Rose 'I'll see you next year?' I want to win the series (against Atlanta). What am I supposed to say to the guy? But they can take it how they want to take it and may the best team win."

Hawks stun Magic in Game 1, 103-93

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) The Atlanta Hawks' dominance over the Orlando Magic this year is not just a regular-season phenomenon.

For now, it also includes the postseason.

Joe Johnson scored 25 points, Jamal Crawford finished with 23 and Atlanta beat Orlando 103-93 in Game 1 of their playoff series on Saturday, overcoming a monster night by Dwight Howard.

Atlanta was eliminated by Orlando in last year's playoffs in the most lopsided four-game sweep in NBA history, but this one was much different. The Hawks led by as many as 18 points while running multiple bodies at Howard all night, and the rest of the Magic failed to step up.

"It's a seven-game series and anything can happen," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "All I wanted us to come in here and do is play hard and maintain our composure. ... I could tell our guys were ready for tonight's game."

Howard tied a career high with 46 points, to go along with 19 rebounds. Jameer Nelson had 27 points but no other Orlando player reached double figures.

The Hawks had five players with at least 13 points, earning their fourth straight victory against the Magic and erasing the sting of a six-game losing streak to close the regular season. Al Horford scored 16, Josh Smith had 15 points and eight rebounds and Kirk Hinrich added 13 points.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Orlando.

"I think we just had to be excited about where we were," Johnson said. "We understood that we played this team four times this year and we won three of them. We're a confident group. I think the last six games of the season people kinda looked down on us because we lost all six. But now we have a plan. It's coming to fruition and we just have to go out and play together."

After shooting a dismal 36 percent in the first quarter, the Hawks connected on 30 of their final 52 attempts from the field. They also shot 6 of 14 from the 3-point line.

"No question it's different (from last year)," Horford said. "We're a different team this year. This year we feel much more confident."

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said Atlanta's strong shooting was too much to overcome and will be the focus of his adjustments going forward, along with reducing turnovers. The Magic had 18 giveaways that led to 21 Atlanta points.

The Hawks were in control throughout. They carried an 85-71 lead into the final period and caught a break when Howard was whistled for his fifth foul with 10:58 to play.

But even with Howard playing less aggressively underneath on defense, Orlando put together a 10-1 run that cut it to 92-83 with 4:40 left.

Howard banked in a hook shot with under two minutes remaining to make it 98-90. But a steal by Smith and 3-pointer by Crawford put the Magic back into scramble mode and Atlanta was able to play keepaway the rest of the game.

The Magic came out with some renewed offensive spirit in the opening minutes of the third, cutting Atlanta's lead to 57-53. The Hawks responded with an 11-0 run, aided by a string of Orlando possessions that produced either fouls or turnovers.

To compound matters, a few trips later Howard was hit with his fourth personal and a technical foul at the 5:37 mark for pulling Zaza Pachulia to the floor on a rebound attempt. Three straight free throws by the Hawks made it 71-54.

Nelson kept the Magic close, scoring Orlando's next 15 points to trim the edge to 80-69 with under two minutes to play in the period. He said there are no quick fixes to their woes in Game 1.

"I can't really put a finger on it right now," Nelson said.

The Hawks took a 55-48 advantage into the break, relying on hot shooting to keep them out in front for most of the half. Atlanta shot 55 percent overall, including a 14 of 17 from the field in the second quarter alone.

Howard went 16 for 23 from the field and 14 of 22 from the free-throw line, but he also had eight turnovers. Howard and Nelson combined for 26 of Orlando's 34 field goals.

Howard scored the Magic's first 12 points of the game and had 31 in the first half. His fellow starters and reserve Ryan Anderson combined to miss their first 10 field-goal attempts.

Hedo Turkoglu finally broke the scoring drought for Howard's teammates with a free throw at the 1:20 mark in the first quarter. And J.J. Redick picked up the first non-Howard field goal of the night a few trips later, dropping in a reverse layup off a behind-the-back pass from Gilbert Arenas in transition.

"It's frustrating that we lost," Howard said. "But it's the first game. ... We just need to keep playing."

NOTES: Howard's 31 points in the opening 24 minutes was a new first-half scoring high for the season. His previous best was 26 in the first half at Portland on Dec. 9, when the Magic lost 97-83. ... The 38 points the Magic gave up to the Hawks in the second quarter were the second-most points scored by an Orlando opponent in a half this season. ... During one stretch in the second and third quarters, Atlanta hit 18 of 24 shots from the field.

THE FACTS: Dwight Howard's quick and quiet press conference spoke volumes.

The frustration of losing 103-93 in Game 1 of the first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks Saturday night despite his 46 points and 19 rebounds was evident.

What wasn't as clear to him, any of his teammates or even head coach Stan Van Gundy was what they were going to do differently on the offensive end to counter Atlanta head coach Larry Drew's decision not to double Howard.

Atlanta's one-on-one defense allowed Howard to roam wildly as the rest of the Magic players, excluding Jameer Nelson, struggled to get into the double digits. The problem, Van Gundy said, was on the defensive end of the court, where Joe Johnson, Jamal Crawford and Al Horford were left to score 25, 23 and 16, respectively.

QUOTABLE: "We knew that coming into this game it was going to be a tough job for our bigs to try and defend Dwight down low. I knew he would come out aggressive. I knew he would come out in attack mode and he had a heck of a first half."

THE STAT: Six of the nine Magic players that played the most minutes in the Hawks-Magic series last year are no longer on the team. (Matt Barnes, Marcin Gortat, Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, Mickael Pietrus, and Jason Williams)

TURNING POINT: It didn't take long for Drew to realize Howard was going to have a monstrous game, but instead of taking the obvious route, he decided not to make a defensive adjustment, leaving Dwight to rack up 46 points, but subsequently shutting down the Magic's perimeter players -- Orlando was 27.3 percent from beyond the arc.

QUOTABLE II: "If all five of their guys are going to shoot 50 percent or better and score what they scored, we're not going to beat them. Our guys have to know that and that's the way it is. If we can't get them under control a little bit at the other end, we've got no chance to win."

HOT: Not only did Dwight's 46 points set his career-high for points in a playoff game, he also became the Magic's all-time leader in postseason scoring, tied Tracy McGrady for a franchise playoff record for points in a game and set the franchise playoff record for points in a half with 31.

NOT: The rest of the Orlando Magic team -- excluding Nelson, who contributed 27 points to the losing effort. No other player on the team scored more than 6 points, and Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson both finished the game without putting a point in their stat line.

NOTABLE: J.J. Redick returned to the Magic lineup after missing 17 regular-season games because of a lower abdominal strain. He played 18 minutes, scored 4 points and grabbed 3 boards in his return.
