Knicks-Celtics Preview

The Boston Celtics and New York Knicks will play at least their next five games against each other, but the first one will look considerably different than the rest.

Both teams may rest starters when they finish the regular season Wednesday night at TD Garden, the same place where they'll open the playoffs this weekend.

"We just have to stay healthy," Knicks point guard Chauncey Billups said Tuesday. "Nothing we can really accomplish tomorrow to be honest with you, just kind of stay healthy. Tomorrow to me is nothing. (In the playoffs) everything will be different, intensity will be different, players will be more focused, it will be a totally different game."

Boston (55-26) is locked into the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Knicks (42-39) are assured of finishing sixth, which means the clubs will square off in the postseason for the first time since 1990.

The Celtics seemed content to settle into third place even when they still had a chance to catch Miami. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo all sat out Monday's 95-94 overtime loss at Washington.

That result, along with the Heat's win over Atlanta, clinched the No. 2 seed for Miami. Boston coach Doc Rivers said it was a difficult decision, but that resting his All-Star quartet - something he plans to do again Wednesday - was more important than seeding.

Rivers said he's looking to "reset the team," which is embroiled in a 9-11 stretch that includes lopsided losses to Chicago and Miami in the past week.

"Mostly it's mental, all the time, with anybody on any team," Rivers said. "They're the best conditioned athletes in the world, so I don't believe in the whole getting-tired theory unless you're allowing yourself to get tired. They just need the rest. And the break. The whole reason is it allows us to have practice with energy, and we need that more than anything."

New York's Amare Stoudemire has needed time to rest his sprained left ankle, which may keep him out of a fourth straight game Wednesday, although he is expected to return for the playoffs.

The Knicks still managed to extend their winning streak to seven before losing 103-90 at home to the Bulls on Tuesday. They led by three at halftime, but Chicago began the third quarter on a 26-2 run.

"They came out and made a run at us in the second half," Billups said. "You could tell that they were playing for something."

Coach Mike D'Antoni's plans for Billups and Carmelo Anthony in the finale are unclear. Anthony has been outstanding lately, averaging 30.3 points on 49.0 percent shooting in his last nine games.

While the Knicks can't exactly send a message by beating Boston's reserves, they wouldn't mind avoiding a season-series sweep. The Celtics have won the first three meetings, although they were decided by an average of just 5.3 points.

The Knicks haven't won in Boston since Nov. 24, 2006, losing eight straight there - seven since the Celtics acquired Garnett and Allen.

Celtics and Knicks rest for 1st round of playoffs

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Celtics needed the rest more than a playoff tuneup. Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony also sat out the regular-season finale.

Only Amare Stoudemire needed the work.

"I wanted to get a little rhythm going," said the Knicks forward, who scored 14 points in 20 minutes on Wednesday night after missing the previous three games with a sprained left ankle. "I was in better shape than I thought I was."

Avery Bradley scored a career-high 20 points as Boston's "B" team beat the Knicks' second string 112-102 in a game both teams treated as a chance to rest rather than as a rehearsal for their first-round playoff matchup. Glen "Big Baby" Davis had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Sasha Pavlovic added a season-high 19 points as the Celtics snapped a two-game losing streak.

Landry Fields had 16 points and seven rebounds for New York (42-40), which finished sixth in the conference to make the playoffs for the first time since 2004. Boston (56-26) finished the regular season with the No. 3 seed in the East.

The Knicks will return to Boston to open the Eastern Conference postseason on Sunday night.

And neither team was giving much away.

A crowd of 18,624 that came to see Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen instead got Von Wafer, Carlos Arroyo and Pavlovic. Shaquille O'Neal, who has played 5 minutes, 29 seconds since Feb. 1, also sat out.

The Knicks rested Billups and Anthony, and relied heavily on Derrick Brown, Bill Walker and Roger Mason Jr.

At least the fans got to see Stoudemire, who had not played since April 6.

"I actually enjoy whenever I see guys like that in games like this," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "We call them 'ballers.' Some guys just like playing. If we had a vote, Paul would've played. It's in their blood. They just love playing. I think Amare is in that category, too. He's just a baller."

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said Stoudemire needed to get back on the court.

"I'm really glad we got him 20 minutes," D'Antoni said. "That worked out. I was holding my breath the whole time, but it was good. He said he felt well, and it's a good start."

Bradley, Boston's first-round draft pick who had scored a total of 32 points in 30 games this season, shattered his previous career high of five points. Wafer and Jeff Green had 14 points apiece, and Nenad Krstic had 13 for the Celtics.

"It still helps to see what some of the guys did," Rivers said. "But we pretty much know."

Boston led 84-74 before the Knicks scored eight straight points near the end of the third quarter. But the Celtics scored the first 11 points in the fourth to pull away.

Notes: The Celtics were wearing special warmups to acknowledge Monday's Boston Marathon. Stoudemire was unaware of the tradition, saying, "Patriots Day? I thought football was on strike." ... Celtics who didn't dress: Allen, Garnett and O'Neal. Knicks who didn't dress: Billups, Anthony and Andy Rautins. Pierce and Rajon Rondo sat on the bench in uniform but did not play. ... Green gave the pregame fan appreciation talk usually given by Pierce. ... Pavlovic drew a technical in the third quarter for his response to Walker's flagrant foul on a 3-pointer. Pavlovic, who made the basket, got two shots to make one free throw.

Knicks-Celtics notebook

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics closed out the regular season on a high note, pulling away in the fourth quarter to defeat the New York Knicks 112-102 in a sneak preview of the Eastern Conference first-round matchup. Avery Bradley poured in a career-high 20 points for the victors, as Boston's second team took advantage of the additional playing time, with the starting lineup getting the night off to rest. Amar'e Stoudemire scored 14 points for New York in his first game back from a sprained ankle, but Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups were also given the night off in preparation for the postseason showdown, which begins Sunday night in Boston.

THE STAT: Boston only played eight players and six of them scored in double figures. Every active player on both teams scored at least five points in the contest.

TURNING POINT: The Celtics broke open a two-point game at the start of the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run.

QUOTABLE II: "I felt good. I mean we've been practicing a lot and just going up against Rondo every single day, and we go hard in practice. Those guys just got me so much better from the beginning of the year to now."

HOT: Bradley. The 20-year-old rookie made the most of his opportunity, hitting his first four shots on his way to a career night. Bradley, who had only played sparingly this year, had tallied just 33 points in his NBA career prior to the scoring outburst.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Glen Davis continued to bounce back out of his recent slump, with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists Wednesday night in 26 minutes. The fourth-year forward is expected to see big minutes throughout the postseason, especially in crunch-time with the starting unit.

ROOKIE WATCH: Landry Fields. The Stanford product led the Knicks in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and seven rebounds in 29 minutes.

NOTABLE: Delonte West (ankle) and Shaquille O'Neal (calf) both sat out the contest for Boston, as the home team. Boston coach Doc Rivers is optimistic that both players will be ready for Game 1 of the opening round. Shelden Williams rolled his ankle in the fourth quarter for New York and did not return. After the game, he told reporters he would be ready to Game 1. New York has 21 fast-break points, compared to just two for Boston. Sasha Pavlovic had a season-high 19 points for the C's. Boston led by as many as 20 points.
