Nets-Bulls Preview

After going 35-5 at the United Center, the Chicago Bulls have proven how dominant they can be at home.

With a chance to finish with the NBA's best record and potentially earn home-court advantage throughout the postseason, the Chicago Bulls play host to the New Jersey Nets in Wednesday night's season finale.

Chicago (61-20) recorded its season high-tying eighth consecutive win by defeating the Knicks 103-90 on Tuesday in New York. Combined with Western Conference-leading San Antonio losing 102-93 to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Bulls and Spurs are tied for the best record in the league.

Since tiebreakers are all even, a random drawing would be held if the Bulls were to finish with an identical record as the Spurs. San Antonio closes its regular season at Phoenix later on Wednesday.

"That's something special. It's definitely something that we want, but we have to look at the bigger picture," Bulls forward Joakim Noah said. "For us it's all about improvement and just focusing on the next opponent and the results will take care of themselves."

Carlos Boozer scored 14 points on 5 of 19 shooting Tuesday, but recorded a season-best 22 rebounds while Luol Deng had 23 points and 10 boards.

After a 39-point effort in Sunday's 102-99 win at Orlando, Derrick Rose scored 26. The MVP favorite is shooting 63.9 percent over his last two games.

"Rose is amazing. His athletic ability is ridiculous. He's come farther, quicker, faster than anyone expected," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He's playing at a level that not many people play."

Chicago, which hasn't won nine straight since March 19-April 2, 2005, came under some scrutiny after coach Tom Thibodeau decided to stick with his regular rotation despite locking up the East's top spot Friday.

That decision may come back to haunt Thibodeau, as reserve swingman Ronnie Brewer left Tuesday with a sprained left thumb. His status is unknown.

The Bulls have limited teams to 89.2 points during a 20-2 stretch. New Jersey is 3-30 when scoring 90 points or less.

The Nets (24-57) suffered their fourth straight loss and 14th in 16 games with a 105-103 defeat to Charlotte on Monday.

Sasha Vujacic, averaging 16.8 points over his last five games, hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 10.9 seconds remaining but D.J. Augustin's jumper with 1.1 seconds to go gave the Bobcats the win.

"We had a great effort, " said Brook Lopez, who scored 31 points. "It's a shame we couldn't get one more here, because the fans showed us a lot of support this season and tonight. I just want to thank them for their support. It hasn't been easy. I thought we played the best we possibly could."

Lopez is averaging 32.4 points - 12.0 above his season mark - on 59.6 percent shooting over his last five games. The 7-footer, though, is averaging just 13.0 points on 27.3 percent shooting in his last two games in Chicago.

The Nets, who are allowing an average of 108.1 points on 51.8 percent shooting during a 1-10 stretch, have been outscored by an average of 10.7 points during a six-game road losing streak.

New Jersey has been outscored by 13.6 points per game during its last seven trips to Chicago, losing six.

Korver leads Bulls past Nets 97-92

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Bulls had just wrapped up their best regular season since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen collected their final championship, and Derrick Rose was in no mood to celebrate.

He'll save it for later.

Kyle Korver came up big down the stretch to finish with 19 points, Rose scored 15 and the Bulls won their ninth straight, beating the New Jersey Nets 97-92 in the final playoff tuneup on Wednesday.

"I'm happy, I'm definitely happy," Rose said. "I wouldn't like to be on a losing team, but what's the point of celebrating now when you can get knocked out in the playoffs?"

The Bulls earned home-court advantage throughout the playoffs later Wednesday with San Antonio's 106-103 loss to Phoenix. Had the Bulls and Spurs tied for the best record, a random drawing would have decided the overall No. 1 seed because all the tiebreakers were even.

The Bulls led by as much as 13 in the second quarter and were up seven at the half, but found themselves trailing 68-58 after the Nets scored 15 straight midway through the third. They responded by running off 10 in a row to close the period and pulled this one out in the end, with Korver scoring seven in the final four minutes.

Rasual Butler scored 10, including the go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute, and the Bulls got 50 points from their bench on a night when the starters spent much of the fourth quarter on the bench.

Rose was just 5 of 13 from the field. Luol Deng scored 11. Joakim Noah finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulls finished 62-20, equaling their best showing since the 1997-98 championship season. That also put Tom Thibodeau in a tie with Paul Westphal of the 1992-93 Phoenix Suns for the most wins by a first-year coach.

"I'm happy for our team," he said. "I think they made a serious commitment. They played hard, and they played for each other."

The Nets got 21 points and 12 assists from Jordan Farmar. Brook Lopez added 17 points after scoring at least 30 in four of the previous five games, and New Jersey finished the season with its 11th loss in 12 games.

"Everybody is excited about next year," Lopez said. "We'll get to know each other better."

The Bulls can now focus on their first-round matchup with Indiana that starts Saturday after a wild finish to the regular season.

They were trailing 84-81 after C.J. Watson hit a 3-pointer with 5:46 left, and Korver tied it when he nailed one from the right side about 1:15 later.

Lopez gave New Jersey its last lead at 90-89 when he hit a 10-footer with just over a minute left, but Butler brought the crowd to its feet when he buried a corner 3 in front of the New Jersey bench, putting the Bulls back on top 92-90 with 46 seconds remaining.

Kurt Thomas then blocked a driving Lopez, and Watson hit the second of two free throws with 22.8 seconds left to make it a three-point game.

Farmar missed a 3, and Gibson hit both free throws to make it 95-90 with 17.3 seconds left. Farmar immediately drove past Rose to pull the Nets within three with 11.8 seconds left, but Korver hit two free throws to preserve the win.

"We didn't execute when we needed to," Farmar said. "They turned up the defense."

Now, things really are about to get interesting for the Bulls. They are favorites this time after winning 41 games and bowing out in the first round each of the past two seasons.

Their offseason makeover paid off in a big way and now, they're looking to cash in.

"It's a whole different environment," Noah said. "You're playing for something big. That's what it's all about, something you dream about playing in. Big stage. It doesn't get much better than that playing in the NBA playoffs for the Chicago Bulls. It's going to be a lot of fun."

NOTES: Chicago's Ronnie Brewer missed his first game of the season because of a sprained left thumb but is expected to be ready for the playoffs. ... Besides Thibodeau and Westphal, the only other rookie coach with 60 wins was Bill Russell.

Nets-Bulls notebook

THE FACTS: The Bulls reserves led a fourth-quarter comeback that helped the Bulls record a 97-92 win over the New Jersey Nets Wednesday at the United Center. The Bulls led 50-43 at halftime, then the Nets went on a 25-8 run to build a 10-point lead. The Bulls reserves were led by Kyle Korver's 19 points. The Nets were led by Jordan Farmar with 21 points.

THE FACTS II: The Bulls finished the season with a record of 62-20, and completed the regular season with a nine-game winning streak, their first such streak since March of 2005. The Nets finished the season 24-58 and losers of 11 of their last 12. They played again, and almost won, without Deron Williams and Kris Humphries.

QUOTABLE: "I did not want to put the starters back in.''

THE STAT: Rasual Butler, who had 10 points in 13 minutes Wednesday, had just six points in five games played for the Bulls since joining the team at the trading deadline.

THE STAT II: In a game in which the Bulls needed to win to clinch at least a tie with San Antonio for best record in the NBA, the Bulls bench players outscored the starters 50-47.

TURNING POINT: With six minutes left and the Nets up by six points, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau called a timeout, pulled all of his starters and inserted five reserves, including Butler, who had played all of 12 minutes for the team this season.

INJURY UPDATE: Bulls forward Ronnie Brewer did not play because of a sprained left thumb, but he is expected to play against Indiana Saturday. Joakim Noah, playing on a weak ankle, had 10 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes.

HOT: Taj Gibson, the Bulls' super-sub on the inside, had nine points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.

NOT: Bulls forward Carlos Boozer was three for 11 from the field and had three turnovers in this key game.

QUOTABLE II: "Playoffs. It was a good season, a great season. But, playoffs."

GOOD MOVE: The big question was whether Joakim Noah would play after tweaking his sore ankle against New York Tuesday. But Noah looked good in his 22 minutes played and had seven offensive rebounds, almost as many as the entire Nets team had (eight).

NOTABLE: The Bulls finished the season 21-2 in their last 23 games. They had the league's best post-All-Star Game record of 24-4.
