There hasn't been much for the Charlotte Bobcats to feel good about lately. Kwame Brown's recent performances have at least provided a small glimmer of hope.

Brown looks to continue his solid play and help the Bobcats end a season high-tying six-game losing streak Monday night when they close the road portion of their schedule against the undermanned New Jersey Nets.

The 6-foot-11 Brown hasn't come close to fulfilling the potential many believed he had when he was selected first overall by then-Washington Wizards boss Michael Jordan in the 2001 draft.

While he may never reach star status, Brown has turned into a useful and cost-effective player for Charlotte (32-48), his fifth NBA team. Brown, who makes the veteran minimum of $1.3 million, is averaging 7.8 points and 6.7 rebounds this season.

However, he's taken on a greater role in the offense the last four games, averaging 16.5 points on 70.0 percent (28 of 40) shooting with leading scorer Stephen Jackson (hamstring), sixth man Tyrus Thomas (knee) and backup point guard Shaun Livingston (tailbone) sidelined.

"It wouldn't surprise me if other teams are looking at him, also, so that's not for me to decide," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said about re-signing Brown, an unrestricted free agent. "But for me, personally, I'd like to have him back."

Brown had 19 points while shooting 9 of 10 from the floor as every Bobcats starter reached double figures in Sunday's 112-101 loss to Detroit. Gerald Henderson scored 21 points and Boris Diaw 20 for Charlotte, which last dropped seven in a row Nov. 7-20, 2009.

"If I would have played my first unit the whole game, then I think we would have had a shot. But you can't do that," Silas said. "I'm taking a look at everybody and I want everybody to come with it. It's been difficult."

Silas expects to be stuck with nine players for the final two games.

"I can't really foresee anybody coming back at this time," he said Sunday.

The Bobcats won't be getting any sympathy from the Nets (24-56), who are without star point guard Deron Williams (right wrist), leading rebounder Kris Humphries (right heel, right ankle) and 3-point specialist Anthony Morrow (left knee).

Those absences were too much for New Jersey to overcome Sunday at Toronto, which built a 21-point lead and held on for a 99-92 victory. Brook Lopez had 35 points and 11 rebounds for the Nets, losers of three straight and 13 of 15.

New Jersey closes the season at Chicago on Wednesday.

"We're not just here to get it over with," guard Sasha Vujacic said. "We want to compete every night."

Lopez reached 30 points for the third time in four games, averaging 32.8 points and 8.0 rebounds during that span. He scored 31 in the Nets' most recent meeting with the Bobcats, a 94-89 road victory Feb. 11.

Charlotte has taken two of three matchups with New Jersey this season, including an 85-83 victory at the Prudential Center on Nov. 3.

Bobcats slip past Nets 105-103

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) D.J. Augustin said it had been a while since he hit a game-winning shot like he did on Monday night.

Augustin hit a fadeaway jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining, leading the Charlotte Bobcats to a 105-103 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

"I guess when I was younger, playing Biddy basketball, about 10 years old," Augustin said about his previous similar game-winner. "I was playing for the New Orleans All-Stars and I hit a shot that put us in the national championship game. That was it."

Nets guard Sasha Vujacic, who finished with 19 points, hit a long 3-pointer to tie the game at 103 with 10.9 seconds remaining.

Augustin, who had 19 points and 11 assists, brought the ball down the floor.

"I didn't want to shoot too early, because I didn't want to give them any time," said Augustin, who used a pick-and-roll with Boris Diaw to get open. "Boris did a good job of screening for me and it was going to be a tough shot."

With 5 seconds left, he used a crossover dribble to get some distance, then made the 19-foot jumper while falling down.

"It felt good leaving my hands," Augustin said. "I couldn't really see it because I was on the floor. I'm so small. I was afraid of getting it blocked."

"D.J. made a heck of a play," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We set up the pick-and-roll with D.J. and Boris and it worked well. It was fun, but nerve wracking as well. We had a double-digit lead and couldn't sustain it. I like the way the guys took charge when they had to."

Diaw, who scored 18 of his 20 points after intermission, knew that Augustin was going to take the shot after he set his screen.

"The most difficult play to guard is the pick-and-roll," Diaw said. "If it's done right, someone has to be open. It's not surprising. Most of what we do is off the pick-and-roll. D.J. got open and that's his kind of shot. I knew that they would probably switch and we had to attack the big man."

Nets center Brook Lopez, who scored a game-high 31 points, heaved a desperation shot at the buzzer that was wide left. It was the 10th time this season that Lopez eclipsed the 30-point mark.

"D.J. made a tough shot at the end," Lopez said. "We had a great effort. It's a shame we couldn't get one more here, because the fans showed us a lot of support this season and tonight. I just want to thank them for their support. It hasn't been easy. I thought we played the best we possibly could."

The Bobcats used strong third quarter shooting to move past the Nets, connecting on 14 of 23 in the period to turn a four-point halftime deficit into a six-point lead.

Dante Cunningham tied a career high with 21 points for Charlotte. Gerald Henderson added 14 points.

Jordan Farmar had 20 points and nine assists for the Nets.

The two teams were missing several players, competing with severely depleted and injury-riddled rosters as they continued to play out the string.

The Nets took a 53-49 lead at the half, thanks to Lopez. He had 14 points in the first half to pace New Jersey.

The Bobcats outscored the Nets 17-6 over the first five minutes of the third quarter to take a 66-59 lead.

Diaw, who was limited to just two points in the first half, scored seven during that span to key the run.

The Bobcats increased the lead to 75-65 with 2:45 left on a jumper from Augustin.

The Nets tied it at 91-91 on two free throws from Farmar with 3:22 left, but Cunningham gave the lead back to the Bobcats on a corner jumper with 2:40 left.

Vujacic gave the Nets their first lead of the second half with a long 3-pointer with 2:02 left, putting New Jersey ahead 94-93.

Diaw then answered with a 3-point play, driving the lane and drawing a foul with 1:41 left, giving Charlotte a 96-94 advantage.

"I'm just glad we got the win," Augustin said. "I'm glad I made the big shot and now we have a chance to head to the summer with another one."

Notes: The Nets announced that guard Deron Williams underwent right wrist surgery on Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. ... Williams' wrist will be encased in a soft splint for two weeks and he will be able to resume basketball-related activities in 6 to 8 weeks. Williams is expected to fully recover and will be ready to start the 2011-12 season. Williams averaged 15 points and 12.8 assists in 12 games for New Jersey after coming over in the trade with Utah. ... It was the 24th different starting lineup the Nets utilized this season.

Bobcats-Nets notebook

THE FACTS: D.J. Augustin's stepback fadeaway jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining gave the Charlotte Bobcats a 105-103 victory over the Nets on Fan Appreciation Night at the Prudential Center. Augustin's bucket, over Brook Lopez, came one possession after Sasha Vujacic had tied the game with a corner 3-pointer.

All five Charlotte starters scored in double figures, led by 21 from Dante Cunningham and 20 from Boris Diaw, including six in the back-and-forth final two minutes. Lopez scored 31 for the Nets. Jordan Farmar finished with 20 points and 9 assists.

The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Bobcats. With the loss, the Nets finished 17-22 at the Prudential Center for the season, one that saw 20 home games in New Jersey decided by six points or less.

QUOTABLE: "I held the ball a little bit and Boris did a great job of screening for me. I came off and took Brook one-on-one. It was tough. Usually, when the clock is counting down I am going out of my head. I knew we didn't have that much time left so I just pulled up."

THE STAT: In what was symptomatic of a hot shooting game overall, the teams combined to make their final ten field goal attempts. It felt like whoever had the ball last would win and that's exactly how it played out.

TURNING POINT: The Bobcats went on a 26-12 run to begin the third quarter, building a 75-65 lead after being down four at the break. The momentum swing made the game's latter stages an uphill climb for the Nets.

QUOTABLE II: "If you look at the triple overtime game against Oklahoma City, you look at Jameer Nelson's Hail Mary shot over us, this two point loss, and I can go on and on."

ROOKIE WATCH: Ben Uzoh (8 points, 2 assists) played with a bruised knee and still turned in a solid performance, attacking the basket hard and frequently going after the smaller Augustin.

NOTABLE: Farmar hit his first five shots from the field while Brandan Wright finished 5-5 from the floor but managed to have the worst plus/minus (-14) of any player that saw action. ... D.J. White rocked the rim with a few emphatic first-half dunks. ... Each team had only nine active players. ... Lopez is now averaging 32.4 points over his last five games. ... The Nets have won two out of their last 16 games, with the two wins coming against Cleveland and Minnesota.
