Bobcats-Heat Preview

Before facing the team they're battling for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Miami Heat are looking to avoid a second straight loss to a non-playoff team.

It should be a lot easier to do it with Dwayne Wade on the court.

After sitting out a game, Wade is expected to return Friday night as Miami hosts the Charlotte Bobcats.

The NBA's third-leading scorer at 25.7 points per game, Wade sat out Wednesday's 90-85 home loss to Milwaukee with a deep right thigh bruise that he's been battling for nearly a week.

Wade, though, was able to do some on-court work Thursday and joined the Heat for their shootaround Friday morning.

As much as the Heat (54-24) might like to have Wade back for this game, particularly after falling to the sub-.500 Bucks without him, it may be more important that he's able to play Sunday.

That's when Miami will take on Boston, the team with which it's currently tied for the East's second seed. The Celtics hold the tiebreaker because they've won all three meetings this season.

"Nobody said this was going to be easy," coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The Heat struggled Wednesday without Wade, getting held to its lowest point total since the All-Star break and shooting 40.5 percent. They fell to 3-10 when scoring less than 90 points.

"Much like these games feel in the playoffs, you lose one, everyone is ready to panic and shovel dirt on whatever we're trying to do," Spoelstra told the team's official website. "We just have to stay the course and take care of business."

LeBron James became the youngest of eight players in NBA history to score 2,000 points in seven straight seasons. He scored 29 and Chris Bosh added 18, but they were the only Miami players in double figures.

James has averaged 29.7 points in three meetings this season against Charlotte - all Miami victories. While Bosh's 24.1 career scoring average versus the Bobcats is his highest against any team, Wade's 21.5 average against them equals his lowest.

While the Heat get back one of their key players, the Bobcats may be missing one of theirs.

Charlotte (32-46) has lost four straight without leading scorer Stephen Jackson, who has been nursing a sore left hamstring. He was originally slated to return Wednesday against Orlando but told coach Paul Silas in warmups he couldn't play through the injury.

The Bobcats lost 111-102 in overtime to be officially eliminated from the playoff race.

"It's difficult to take because we wanted to be (in the playoffs)," Silas said. "We didn't make it, but I look at the positives. Something good's going to happen."

Jackson, who scored 30 points Nov. 19 against Miami, likely will be a game-time decision.

Gerald Henderson had a career-high 32 points Wednesday, but D.J. Augustin scored just six on 2-of-14 shooting.

Charlotte has lost 14 of 20 to slip out of playoff contention after making the postseason in 2009-10 for the first time in franchise history.

"It's tough, man," Augustin said. "We've been thinking about the playoffs since we started the season."

It likely won't get any easier against Miami, which can sweep a season series against Charlotte for the first time since 2005-06. The Heat have won the first three matchups by an average 11.3 points.

Charlotte has lost 10 of 13 in Miami since joining the NBA for the 2004-05 season.

Bosh, Wade carry Heat past Charlotte, 112-103

MIAMI (AP) Dwyane Wade was back and attacking, his sore thigh almost forgotten. Chris Bosh had his biggest fourth quarter of the season. LeBron James controlled the offense, as he's done so many times.

Though not easily, Charlotte was handled.

And now the Heat can get ready for Boston.

Bosh scored 13 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 10 rebounds, Wade returned from injury to score 27 more, and James finished with 23 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. It was enough for the Heat to hold off the scrapping Bobcats 112-103.

"When we're aggressive, good things happen," Bosh said. "I think that showed our mentality was to attack today."

The victory, combined with Boston's 104-88 win over Washington, kept the Heat and Celtics tied for the second spot in the Eastern Conference with identical 55-24 records. They meet in Miami on Sunday, with the winner taking a huge step toward securing home-court advantage for the first two playoff rounds.

"Why not go get it?" James asked.

Added coach Erik Spoelstra: "Let's play."

Miami won for the 12th time in 15 games and swept four games with Charlotte this season. The Heat will get the East's No. 2 seed by winning out, and Spoelstra vowed his team would keep the focus Friday on Charlotte, not Boston or anyone else.

Down the stretch, the Bobcats insisted that be the case.

"We had a chance," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said.

He was right. D.J. White's tip-in with 1:29 left got Charlotte within 104-98, even though Miami took a 14-point lead into the fourth and held that same margin with 6 minutes to play.

The "Big 3" provided breathing room. Wade got the ball at midcourt, threw to Bosh, who then set up James for a basket with 1:09 left that made it a three-possession game. And James sealed it with 37 seconds left, finding Bosh with a sharply angled pass for a layup and a 108-100 lead.

With that, it was time to look to Boston.

"We look forward to the challenge," Wade said.

Kwame Brown finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds for Charlotte. Garrett Temple scored 17 points, D.J. White added 13 and Boris Diaw and D.J. Augustin each finished with 11.

Charlotte had nine available players, going without Stephen Jackson, Tyrus Thomas, Eduardo Najera and Shaun Livingston, among others.

"We just couldn't complete plays," Silas said. "But I am so proud of these guys to not give up and keep working hard. ... Just a great effort."

Miami moved to 14-0 when it has 25 or more assists. It had 26 assists against the Bobcats, along with 62 points in the paint and 31 more from the foul line.

Still, this outcome really wasn't decided until the final minute.

"We just ran out of energy," Brown said. "They had all of their guys."

Wade's status wasn't official until about 45 minutes before tip-off because of the deep bruise that he's battled for about a week in his right thigh. The way he came out, it was hard to tell anything was wrong.

His plan was to slowly work his way into a rhythm. Instead, he took over early, scoring 14 points in the first quarter, his third-highest total for an opening period this season, and attacking the rim enough to earn nine free-throw tries in the first 5:53.

"He looked like he was caged for three days ... so aggressive and absolutely assaulting the rim," Spoelstra said. "That was good."

When he stopped scoring, James started, getting three field goals in a 75-second span - the last of them a one-handed slam off an inbound pass from Mario Chalmers, who had just checked into the game. Miami was up 31-22, and signs pointed to a quick runaway.

Charlotte had other ideas.

It was a 41-38 game midway through the second quarter, and Miami needed a 10-4 run just to take a double-digit lead - 55-44 - into halftime.

The third quarter turned into a bit of a highlight show at times for the Heat, with Wade throwing a pair of full-court overhand passes to James and Miami running at every opportunity. Brown took exception at one point, leveling Wade with a flagrant-1 foul on a dunk try with 5:35 left in the third.

Every time Miami tried to run away, Charlotte answered, until time finally ran out.

So bring on Boston, which is 3-0 against Miami this season.

"We think we're a much different team than the three times we've played them," Spoelstra said.

NOTES: Erick Dampier was introduced as Miami's starter at center, but Zydrunas Ilgauskas actually got the start and is the first-stringer "for now," Spoelstra said. ... Queen Latifah was among the celebrities in the building. ... Charlotte became the 11th team to get swept by Miami this season, joining Detroit, Golden State, Houston, the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Sacramento and Washington. The Heat could also add Toronto to that list if they win in Canada on Wednesday.

Bobcats-Heat notebook

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 112-103 Friday at AmericanAirlines Arena. Guard Dwyane Wade scored 27 points and hit 15 of 16 free throws. It was his first action since missing one game with a bruised right thigh. Forward Chris Bosh also scored 27 points. while LeBron James contributed 23. The Heat allowed the Bobcats to keep things close, but never lost control. The win helped Miami forget about a surprising loss to the Milwaukee just two days earlier, and sets up Sunday's home finale against the Boston Celtics. The Bobcats, who were eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the week, were game in defeat. Center Kwame Brown scored a season-high 23 points while Garrett Temple added 17 off the bench.

QUOTABLE: "That's one down," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We have to move forward and get ready for Sunday (against Boston) and continue this. We have to be in playoff mode as we finish these last three games up."

THE STAT: The Heat were 31 of 35 from the foul line. Spoelstra has stressed the importance of driving to the basket. They were active in attacking the basket, especially Wade in the first half.

TURNING POINT: Tipoff was the turning because the Heat knew it needed a win to keep pace with Boston. Aside from a few lulls, the game was never in doubt. The Big Three of Wade, James, Bosh started strong and never looked back.

QUOTABLE II: "I actually went against what I was going to do," Wade said. "I was going to come out and work my way into things. It didn't work out that way."

HOT: Bosh seems to be criticized after every poor game, but rarely praised after solid performance. He rebounded from a poor game against the Bucks by shooting 9 of 14 from the field. He also was active on the defensive end and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

NOT: Bobcats guard D.J. Augustin had a rough night, going 4 of 10 from the field. He was frustrated by the Heat's perimeter defense of Mike Bibby and Mario Chalmers.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Bobcats center Brown is often called one of the biggest No. 1 draft picks in history, but is starting to come around. He finished with 23 points on 10 of 15 shooting. He also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Actress Gabrielle Union was in attendance.

GOOD MOVE: Spoelstra could have easily rested Wade in preparation for Sunday's big game against Boston. With one game under his belt, Wade should be better equipped. This is important because Wade has struggled mightily against the Celtics this season. He could use all the practice he can get.

BAD MOVE: The Bobcats simply didn't have enough healthy bodies. They dressed only nine players because of a roster depleted by injuries. The lone bright spot was it gave Brown a chance to put together one of his most productive games this season.

NOTABLE: The Heat now control their destiny in terms of earning the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. If they win out, which would include a victory Sunday against the Celtics, they would host the first two rounds. ... Center Zydrunas Ilgauskas replaced Erick Dampier in the Heat starting lineup. ... Bobcats leading scorer Stephen Jackson missed his fifth straight game with a sore hamstring.
