Wizards-Pacers Preview

Despite being headed for a fifth straight losing season, the Indiana Pacers are on the verge of clinching a playoff spot.

They could move a big step closer to capturing the Eastern Conference's last available postseason berth Wednesday night as they host the Washington Wizards.

Indiana (35-43) is eighth in the East with four games left, sitting 2 1/2 ahead of ninth-place Charlotte and 3 1/2 in front of 10th-place Milwaukee. It seems the Pacers have an excellent chance to improve their position Wednesday, considering they face one of the league's worst teams while the Bobcats play fourth-place Orlando and the Bucks visit second-place Miami.

Indiana has finished under .500 every season since last making the playoffs in 2006 and will do so again this season, but an 18-16 record under interim coach Frank Vogel has the team in position to reach the playoffs.

Danny Granger hasn't been there since he was a rookie, and the Pacers likely need their top scorer to get back on track to have any shot of winning a series. He's been held to fewer than 20 points in a season-high five consecutive games and has missed nine of his last 12 3-point attempts.

Fellow starting forward Tyler Hansbrough also is struggling, averaging 9.3 points and 5.7 rebounds over the past six games. That follows an 11-game stretch during which he averaged 20.6 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Hansbrough failed to score in double figures for the third time in four games Sunday as Indiana had a three-game winning streak snapped with a 108-96 loss at New Orleans.

"Tough loss for us. Obviously a missed opportunity as we're closing down on the playoff chase," Vogel said.

It was the fourth time in five games the Pacers let their opponent score at least 100 points and shoot better than 50 percent from the field.

However, they've held Washington below 40 percent in all three meetings this season and won the last two while forcing at least 20 turnovers in each.

The Wizards (21-56) have lost six consecutive trips to Indianapolis but have shockingly won their last two road games. They had been 1-35 away from home before winning at Utah on March 28 and doing Indiana a favor with a 97-91 victory at Charlotte on Sunday.

They've won three straight overall after a 107-105 home victory over Detroit on Tuesday, giving them their longest win streak since the 2007-08 season.

Andray Blatche has averaged 29.0 points and 15.3 rebounds in the last three games.

Rookie Jordan Crawford came into Tuesday having averaged 27.0 points in his previous four games, but he shot 6 of 17 and scored 17 points versus Detroit.

Granger helps Pacers clinch playoff berth

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Frank Vogel never doubted his Indiana Pacers.

In his early weeks as interim coach, he often talked as though Indiana's presence in the postseason would be a foregone conclusion, even though he took over a team that was 10 games under .500.

His team backed up his confidence.

Danny Granger scored 25 points, and the Indiana Pacers clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2006 with a 136-112 victory against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Indiana improved to 19-16 under Vogel, who turned the team's fortunes despite going with a younger lineup that won while experiencing growing pains.

"It's a credit to Frank and his staff," Granger said. "Granted, we still have some problems, and we had some problems along the way, but with the time they had to rehaul the team and do things differently, I think they did a great job."

The Pacers needed a win and a Charlotte loss to Orlando on Wednesday to clinch a playoff berth. As the Pacers' game ended, the Orlando-Charlotte game was in overtime, and the Conseco Fieldhouse staff put the game on the Jumbotron. Many fans stayed to cheer to the Magic on to a 111-102 win.

Vogel was thankful when his bold prediction became reality.

"I'm just really, really happy for a lot of people," he said. "I'm so happy for our fans. It's going to be a fun ride."

Vogel took over for Jim O'Brien, who coached the team for 3 1/2 seasons. Pacers veteran Jeff Foster said O'Brien deserves some of the credit.

"He's (Vogel) a disciple of O.B.," Foster said. "I have the utmost respect for O.B., and I'm sad that he's not around to get a chance to experience this with us, because this was his goal as well, and he's built this to where we are now."

The berth has special meaning for several Pacers.

It will be the first playoff appearance for veteran Mike Dunleavy.

"It feels great, but I really didn't think it would take nine years to do this," he said. "I am really happy that I am here and could do it with such a class organization."

Reserve forward Josh McRoberts, an Indiana native, nearly was sent packing before the trade deadline.

"It's an honor to get back to the playoffs, to be a part of that," he said. "It's cool to be able to see it through." Paul George scored a career-high 23 points and Darren Collison added 15 points and 11 assists for the Pacers, who posted their second-highest point total of the season.

Jordan Crawford scored 29 points and Andray Blatche added 23 for Washington. John Wall had 19 points and nine rebounds.

Indiana shot 60 percent from the field and the Wizards allowed the most points they have in a game this season.

"Energy caught up to us," Washington coach Flip Saunders said. "I was worried before the game. Guys just didn't seem to have that pep in their step. We almost really lost the game in the first seven minutes."

Granger, who was averaging 20.4 points coming in, ended a streak of five straight games under 20 points.

Dunleavy scored 14 points after scoring 15 points on Sunday in a loss at New Orleans. The former starter missed 20 straight games with a broken left thumb, but has played the past four games and appears to be returning to form.

Indiana led 75-56 at halftime and had five players score in double figures.

Washington's Crawford and Blatche each scored 20 points in the first half, yet the Wizards weren't even in the game. It was the most points the Wizards have allowed in a first half all season.

Granger scored eight points in the first 2:26 of the second half as Indiana extended its lead to 85-60. Indiana scored its 100th point on a free throw by Tyler Hansbrough with 4:03 left in the third quarter after a Flagrant 1 call against Blatche.

It was a sometimes chippy game that included five technical fouls and the flagrant on Blatche.

The Pacers kept their composure.

"A lot of young guys have shown a lot of growth throughout the year," Foster said. "We've had some highs, some lows, but this is the time of year, where, as Reggie Miller said, you make your money."

Foster said the team will have to learn about playoff basketball on the fly.

"These guys have to realize that this is a whole new stage, a whole new beast we're getting ready to experience. They have to approach it a different way in the next week and a half."

NOTES: Blatche scored 16 points in the first quarter. ... Washington fell to 3-36 on the road. ... Despite the playoff push, the Pacers drew just 14,222. ... Quite a few fans made the drive to support former Kentucky star Wall. Indianapolis is a three-hour drive from Lexington, Ky. He finished with 19 points and nine assists for the Wizards.

THE FACTS: After polishing off the Washington Wizards 136-112 Wednesday night, the Indiana Pacers players and coaches headed to the locker room to see how things would unfold in Charlotte, where the Magic and Bobcats were locked in an overtime battle. When Orlando finished off a 111-102 victory, the locker room erupted in celebration because it meant the Pacers had clinched their first playoff berth since 2006. Danny Granger scored 25 and Paul George a career-high 23 for the Pacers, who shot .595 from the field, never trailed and led by as many as 29. Jordan Crawford had 29 and Andray Blatche 23 for the Wizards.

QUOTABLE: "I'm just really, really happy for a lot of people...the guys in the locker room who haven't been there in a while or at all and the young guys. I'm so happy for our fans. When I came as an assistant I could see the passion in them. It's going to be a fun ride. I'm happy for everyone. I knew there would be bumps in the road but I didn't think that would derail us from the playoffs. The future is so bright here, with salary cap room and our young guys. This is a building block toward a championship."

THE STAT: The Pacers were 10 games under .500 (17-27) and appeared headed toward their fifth straight non-playoff finish when Vogel replaced Jim O'Brien. Indiana has gone 19-16 under Vogel.

TURNING POINT: It would not be a reach to say the opening tip. The Pacers racked up season highs of 43 points in the first quarter and 75 in the first half in building a 19-point lead at the break, and quickly pushed it to 93-64 midway through the third.

QUOTABLE II: "It feels great, but I really didn't think I would take nine years to do this. I am very happy that I am here and could do it with such a class organization. They've been great to me and I hope we have given back to them."

HOT: Under pressure to retain his starting job with Dunleavy's return from a broken thumb, George had the best offensive game of his rookie season, hitting 9-of-15 overall including 5-of-6 from the 3-point line. ... Granger shot 7-of-11, 3-of-5 from the arc, while Roy Hibbert shot 6-of-8 for 16 points and Dunleavy had 15 on 4-of-6 shooting. ... Darren Collison posted his third double-double with 15 points and 11 asssists.

NOT: JaVale McGee could not contend with Hibbert inside and played just nine minutes, producing two points, one rebound, five fouls and a technical. ... Wizards starting small forward Maurice Evans was scoreless, missing all five of his shots. ... Though Crawford and Blatche put up big point totals, they combined to shoot just 18-of-41.

NOTABLE: Granger snapped a string of five consecutive games with fewer than 20 points, his longest such streak since 2007-08. ...
