The Orlando Magic haven't looked like a team that is gearing up for the playoffs. The Charlotte Bobcats aren't playing like one that's trying to get in.

After another lackluster effort, the Magic try to get back on track Wednesday night when they go for a season sweep of the short-handed Bobcats, whose slim postseason hopes continue to fade.

Orlando (49-29) had lost three of four before holding on for an ugly 78-72 win over Milwaukee on Tuesday. The Magic led 14-0 and were up 26-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bucks rallied to stay close thanks to a horrific shooting performance by Orlando.

The Magic made 38.8 percent from the field and committed 21 turnovers. They missed 19 straight from 3-point range and finished 2 of 21.

The poor offensive effort tempered any excitement over clinching the No. 4 seed and home-court advantage in the first round.

"We're not really thinking about that," forward Hedo Turkoglu said. "We're just playing as a group to get better as we're getting close to the playoffs. When the time comes ... we just have to be conditioned right and be at the highest level we can and try to do our best."

The Magic were held to fewer than 90 points for the third time in four games and posted their third-lowest point total of the season. Dwight Howard had with 18 points and 17 rebounds while Jameer Nelson scored 17 for Orlando, which was outscored 22-15 in the third quarter.

"We have four games left now, and we have to use these four games as a way for us to build momentum going into the playoffs," guard Chris Duhon said. "We want to be playing at our best and there's still time to get there."

Orlando has won five straight on the road over Charlotte and all three meetings this season, the most recent an 89-77 victory Friday.

While the Magic are trying to improve before the postseason, Charlotte's chances of making it in aren't good. The Bobcats are coming off back-to-back losses to two of the worst teams in the East and have dropped three straight overall.

Charlotte (32-45) fell 97-91 to Washington on Sunday and 99-89 at Cleveland on Tuesday, dropping it 2 1/2 games behind Indiana for the final playoff spot. The Bobcats have five games remaining while the Pacers have four.

Charlotte shot 39 percent for the game and was outscored 34-16 in the first quarter. The Bobcats trailed by as many as 21.

Leading scorer Stephen Jackson missed his third straight game with a strained hamstring, which could sideline him for the rest of the season.

"We aren't going to make the playoffs if we don't come to play," said guard Gerald Henderson, who scored 15 points. "It's unfortunate to start games like that and expect to play in the postseason. It's just not going to happen if we continue to do that these next few games."

Jackson's injury isn't the only one Charlotte is dealing with. Forward Tyrus Thomas (sore left knee), guard Shaun Livingston (bruised tailbone) and forward Eduardo Najera (back spasms) were also out.

The Bobcats have a rough upcoming schedule, with a visit to Miami on Friday following the matchup with Orlando.

Charlotte has averaged 83.7 points against the Magic this season.

Magic win 111-102, eliminate Bobcats from playoffs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Orlando quickly ended Charlotte's first postseason appearance a year ago. The Magic on Wednesday night helped make sure the Bobcats won't make a return trip this season.

Yet it sure was ugly, difficult and perhaps costly, too.

Gilbert Arenas scored 25 points, and the Magic overcame Quentin Richardson's ejection, Dwight Howard's 18th technical foul and a late fourth-quarter meltdown to beat Charlotte 111-102 in overtime and extinguish the Bobcats' flickering playoff hopes.

Jameer Nelson atoned for two turnovers in the closing seconds of regulation by hitting a jumper and banking in a 3-pointer in Orlando's 12-2 run to open the extra period to secure its fourth consecutive 50-win season.

"The guys wanted to get to 50," coach Stan Van Gundy said. "It was good to get. We still didn't play great, but we'll take it."

A year after sweeping the Bobcats in the first round of the playoffs, Orlando ended Charlotte's postseason hopes and allowed Indiana to clinch the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.

"It's tough, man," said guard D.J. Augustin, who missed a reverse layup at the regulation buzzer. "We've been thinking about the playoffs since we started the season."

Gerald Henderson scored a career-high 32 points for the Bobcats and was the receiving end of Richardson's two-handed shove to the face early in the fourth quarter that could lead to a suspension.

Howard, who had 15 points, seven rebounds and six blocks, is facing another one-game suspension - for Sunday's matchup with East-leading Chicago - after again failing to control his temper following his second 10-second violation on a free throw attempt in as many nights.

"I don't see a lot of people getting called for it," Howard said. "I was really upset about it."

The Bobcats played a fourth straight game - all losses - without top scorer Stephen Jackson, who told coach Paul Silas he was going to play. But he couldn't get his troublesome left hamstring loose in pregame warmups.

After blowing an 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, the nine-man Bobcats staged a dramatic comeback to nearly win it in regulation.

Orlando was up five with a minute left and 96-93 when Kwame Brown deflected Nelson's pass, leading to Augustin's tying 3-point attempt with 16 seconds left.

After a timeout, Nelson ran down the clock until Augustin pickpocketed him. He drove in for the winning layup, but Nelson made him go to the opposite side of the hoop, and the ball rolled off the rim at the buzzer.

"I tried to reverse it to my stronger hand," said Augustin, who added he was hit on the play. "It just didn't roll in."

Orlando quickly ended the suspense by scoring the first nine points of OT for its eighth straight win over Charlotte.

Having already locked up the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, Van Gundy sat guard Jason Richardson, who has been playing through tendinitis in his left knee.

But while Howard and Quentin Richardson now may be facing forced time off, the Magic got good news from Arenas, who started and scored the most points since being acquired by Orlando. He shot 9 of 14, but struggled to contain Henderson at the other end.

Henderson shattered his previous career high of 22 points by hitting 12 of 22 shots.

"I think Gerald is going to get there," Silas said. "He really works hard, as hard as anyone I've ever seen. It's coming."

Henderson was in the middle of the strangest play of the night.

He was trying to dribble out of pressure early in the fourth quarter when Richardson was called for a foul. Upset over an elbow from Henderson earlier in the play, Richardson confronted Henderson and poked him in his right eye.

Henderson shoved him before Richardson put both open hands on Henderson's face and jerked his head backward.

"Henderson caught him a couple times in the mouth," Howard said of Richardson, who declined comment. "Q had a busted lip and I guess he just got tired of it."

"You saw what happened," countered Henderson. "He decided to put his finger in my face and pushed my face."

The Bobcats, who led by as many as 12 points in the first half, couldn't hold on as owner Michael Jordan watched his team eliminated from the playoff race for the sixth time in seven seasons.

"We wanted to be there," Silas said, "but I think something good always comes out of where you are."

Notes: Van Gundy said Jason Richardson has been playing in pain for some time. "We targeted this time because we're going to take a couple days off after this game and he can get now three straight days of rest," Van Gundy said. ... Silas said tests showed F Tyrus Thomas has not sustained more damage to his surgically repaired left knee and the swelling has subsided, but he remains in too much pain to play. ... While Silas had high praise for Howard, he thinks Chicago's Derrick Rose should get the nod for league MVP.

THE FACTS: It may have taken a few more minutes, but the Orlando Magic escaped Time Warner Cable Arena with a 111-102 overtime win over the Charlotte Bobcats Wednesday night. Gilbert Arenas led the Magic with 25 points while Gerald Henderson paced the Bobcats with a career-best 32 points. With the Charlotte loss and a win by Indiana over Washington earlier tonight the Bobcats have been officially from the playoffs.

QUOTABLE: "This is great win for us tonight. We really hung in there. There were times where it looked like we were going to give up but we hung in there. For me, I just wanted to go out there and be a scorer for us tonight."

THE STAT: Three-pointers. The Magic rebounded from a poor shooting performance from behind the arc on Tuesday night and sank 14 of its 35 attempts from three. Orlando leads the league in both three pointers made and attempted and have made 10 or more threes 38 times this season. They are now 26-12 when hitting 10 or more. Charlotte on the other hand connected on just six three pointers with a difference in totals that was almost equal to the margin in the game.

TURNING POINT: Let's get ready to RUMBLE. The Bobcats were leading by two with 8:30 to play in the fourth when Quentin Richardson and Henderson got into a skirmish under the Bobcats basket after Henderson objected to some hard contact from Richardson on a drive to the basket. Richardson was ejected after being assessed two technical fouls, but it energized the Magic and brought out a strong defensive presence. The Bobcats closed the game shooting 5-for-13 and then shot a paltry 3-for-10 in overtime.

QUOTABLE II: "That aggression by [Quentin Richardson] was really a turning point for us. We don't condone that kind of action on the court, but it fueled us for sure tonight. We took it to heart and stepped up our game out there."

HOT: Henderson. The Bobcats second-year guard has been one of the lone bright spots for Charlotte down the stretch. Henderson scored a career-best 32 points against Orlando Wednesday night on 12-for-22 shooting. He has scored in double figures in each of the last 10 games and in 19 of his last 24 games. During that 10-game stretch Henderson is averaging 16.0 points which is almost double his season average.

NOT: D.J. Augustin. The Bobcats point guard struggled all night against Orlando. Augustin finished the night with just six points on 2-for-14 shooting which included a miss as time expired on a contested open-court lay-up which would have given Charlotte the win. In addition to his six points he was credited with only five assists both of which are the lowest totals in either category the last six games.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Arenas scored a team-high 25 points in his second start in a Magic uniform. Arenas made nine of his 14 shot attempts including matching the Bobcats as a team from behind the arc with a 6-for-11 performance. He also added two rebounds, two assists and two steals to his tally for the night.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Michael Jordan made a return appearance to Time Warner Cable Arena. The Bobcats majority owner had been a courtside fixture for a majority of the season before disappearing over the last month.

ROOKIE WATCH: No rookies saw action in tonight's game. Daniel Orton is the lone rookie on either team's lineup and he was inactive for the Magic due to arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

NOTABLE: Dwight Howard received his 18th technical foul of the season after being whistled for a 10-second violation at the free throw line and could be suspended by the league for the team's Sunday game against Chicago. Howard also scored in double figures for the 75th time this season. The Magic hit the 50-win mark Wednesday night. It's the fourth consecutive season the team has reached that milestone. Charlotte was officially eliminated from the playoffs after their loss and the win by Indiana against Washington. Bobcats forward Dante Cunningham had his fourth career double-double and his first back-to-back game with a double-double after a 16-point, 10-rebound night.
