Raptors-Knicks Preview

The New York Knicks have clinched their first playoff berth in seven years, and they can now turn their focus to moving up a spot in the Eastern Conference.

Facing the short-handed Toronto Raptors should be a good first step.

The Knicks look to complete their first four-game sweep of their Atlantic Division rival since Toronto's inaugural season Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

New York (38-38) certainly hasn't looked like a championship contender since trading for Carmelo Anthony, but it's going to get its much-anticipated shot at an East heavyweight starting in two weeks. The Knicks have bounced back from a six-game losing streak by winning three straight, locking up the franchise's first postseason berth since 2003-04 with a 123-107 victory over Cleveland on Sunday.

"That was the goal we set at the start of the season. The plan was to make the playoffs," said forward Amare Stoudemire, who had a game-high 28 points. "It's mission accomplished and now on to the next one."

New York is seventh in the East, 1 1/2 games behind Philadelphia, and it could catch the 76ers as soon as Wednesday when the teams go head to head.

The Knicks and Sixers will almost certainly face Miami and Boston in the first round, but those clubs are in a back-and-forth battle for the second seed.

The Knicks are 2-2 against the Heat and 0-3 versus the Celtics.

"Any time you accomplish a goal, you really have a sense of pride," Stoudemire said. "After that game (Sunday) night, I felt extremely emotional. ... But now it's time to get back on track."

New York hasn't swept four games from Toronto (21-55) since 1995-96, and doing so again may not be easy. Prior to beating the Cavaliers and Nets over the past week, the Knicks had lost six straight to sub-.500 teams.

In addition, the Raptors are coming off an impressive victory in their second game without point guard Jose Calderon and center Andrea Bargnani. A night after staying close before falling at East-leading Chicago, Toronto defeated Orlando 102-98 on Sunday behind 47 points from the starting backcourt of Jerryd Bayless and DeMar DeRozan.

"Everybody is playing well right now," said Bayless, who has scored 49 points in two games filling in for Calderon. "We're playing well, moving the ball and everybody is touching it. It's a fun way to play."

Bargnani or Calderon may not play in any of the remaining six games and that would be good news for the Knicks, particularly in the case of Bargnani. He scored a career-high 41 points at MSG in a 113-110 loss Dec. 8.

Stoudemire has averaged 28.0 points and 13.3 boards against the Raptors this season, but he may have trouble dominating the glass Tuesday. Toronto forward Reggie Evans, who missed two of the first three meetings with a broken foot, has averaged an NBA-best 20.9 boards per 48 minutes since returning March 9.

Anthony, who has yet to face the Raptors in a New York uniform, averaged 25.7 points in his last 12 games versus Toronto with Denver - 11 wins.

Knicks rout Raptors, pull closer to 6th place

NEW YORK (AP) Carmelo Anthony simply shrugged his shoulders after one 3-pointer fell, surprised at how easy things came against the Toronto Raptors.

A battle for playoff positioning on Wednesday figures to be much tougher.

Toney Douglas scored 28 points, Anthony and Amare Stoudemire each added 23, and the New York Knicks closed within a half-game of sixth place in the Eastern Conference with a 131-118 rout on Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory.

Chauncey Billups had 13 points and nine assists for the Knicks, who can move ahead of the 76ers for the No. 6 seed when they travel to Philadelphia on Wednesday. It's a rare key game in the springtime for the Knicks, usually long out of contention by now but headed back to the postseason for the first time since 2004.

"It's going to be a big game tomorrow night, a very important game for us," Stoudemire said. "We're really trying to make a push to move up the standings. And so Philly's playing well, and we owe them boys."

The Knicks rang up 78 points in their highest-scoring first half of the season, shot 58 percent overall and coasted to their fourth victory over Toronto this season, sweeping the season series for the first time since 2001-02.

"I thought we did a great job of getting the ball out fast, getting stops first and foremost, getting the ball out and running," Billups said. "Melo got hot obviously in that first half and he was rolling and we just kind of fed off his energy and his shots."

Anthony, Billups and Anthony hit consecutive 3-pointers for the Knicks late in the half, with Anthony shrugging his shoulders similar to Michael Jordan against Portland in the 1992 NBA finals after improving to 5 for 5 from beyond the arc before missing his next one.

"It went in," he said of that 30-footer. "I didn't think it was going in."

Or perhaps he couldn't believe how bad Toronto's defense was.

DeMar DeRozan had 36 points and 10 rebounds for the Raptors, who played without Jose Calderon (strained left hamstring), Leandro Barbosa (sore right pinky finger), or much fight in the first half. Two days after knocking off Orlando to snap a six-game losing streak, the Raptors never led and trailed by as many as 29.

New York (39-38) moved back above .500, where it spent most of the season before nine losses in 10 games last month dropped the Knicks three games under. They were in sixth place for months before that slump dropped them to the No. 7 spot. With Boston and Miami tied for second, New York may not know until next week which team it would play in its return to the playoffs, so the players largely agreed the seeding doesn't matter. But they'd like to move up, anyway.

"It's just something we want to do," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I don't know if it's important or not, I don't think we'll know until we look back on it, and you might not even know then. So it's just that tonight, they're playing well, (Philadelphia is a) hard team on the road, let's learn to try to win on the road, let's keep building on what we got."

The Knicks put it away early, racing to a 13-0 lead after consecutive 3-pointers by Anthony. They scored 39 in the first quarter - two fewer than Butler managed in the whole game in its NCAA championship game loss to Connecticut on Monday - and met even less resistance in the second period.

The Knicks made 14 of 19 shots (74 percent) in the second, with Bill Walker getting some of the easiest. Douglas drove into the lane and threw a behind-the-back pass to a slashing Walker for a three-point play that made it 57-30 with 7:42 remaining. Less than a minute later, there was no Toronto player anywhere near Walker for at least 3 seconds as he stood along the wing, so Billups fired the ball downcourt to him and he drove for a layup.

New York was 15 of 27 (56 percent) from 3-point range.

"They killed us in the first half. We didn't take them off of the 3-point line like we said we were. They took advantage of it," DeRozan said.

Rookie Ed Davis had a season-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who got only 8 minutes from injured leading scorer Andrea Bargnani before he shut it down for the night with a sore right ankle.

It was 78-54 at the break after DeRozan banked in a 35-footer at the buzzer. Toronto cut it to 10 midway through the fourth quarter, but Stoudemire and Douglas helped the Knicks quickly open it up again.

Notes: The Knicks are 14-2 when scoring 120 points. ... D'Antoni earned his 100th victory as Knicks coach. He is 100-141 in nearly three seasons. ... New York has just one home game remaining, hosting Chicago next Tuesday.

THE FACTS: The New York Knicks defeated the Toronto Raptors 131-118 before 19,763 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, pulling to just a half-game behind the Philadelphia 76ers for the sixth seed.

QUOTABLE: "It's something we want to do. I don't know if it's important to do, I don't even know if it's something we'll realize until we look back on it. ... Let's keep doing what we got, it's not the end of the world either way. It should be a fun game to play because it does have some importance."

THE STAT: The Knicks opened up the game with a 14-0 lead, stretching the margin to as much as 29 at one point. The Raptors cut it to as little as 10 late in the game, but the early margin was too much to overcome.

TURNING POINT: D'Antoni decided to give guard Toney Douglas major burn, and the move paid dividends, with the Florida State product going for 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting, 6-of-9 from 3-point range.

HOT: Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan scored 36 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished three assists in the losing effort.

NOT: Starting Knicks center Jared Jeffries scored just two points with one rebound.

INSIDE THE ARENA: In between the first and second quarters, a season ticket holder who recently renewed his tickets for next season was selected to take part in the "Knicks Renewal Challenge". Maurice was the lucky fan selected, and made the most of it, hitting a free throw to net himself $10,000.

GOOD MOVE: With the Knicks holding a commanding lead in the fourth quarter, D'Antoni rested Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony for the majority of the stanza.

ROOKIE WATCH: Raptors forward Ed Davis posted a double-double off the bench, scoring 22 points to go along with 13 rebounds (seven offensive).

NOTABLE: The Knicks tied their season high in points, scoring 131. They defeated the Utah Jazz 131-109 on March 7.
