Bobcats-Cavaliers Preview

The Charlotte Bobcats have little margin for error - and few healthy bodies - as they head down the stretch hoping to sneak into the playoffs and get a shot at the Eastern Conference's top team.

Right now, they're struggling to beat some of the conference's bottom feeders.

After coming up short at home against the team that's second-to-last in the East, the injury-plagued Bobcats face a near must-win situation when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers - owner of the NBA's worst mark - Tuesday night.

Charlotte (32-44) tied a season high with four consecutive victories to close March, a streak that pulled it to within one game of eighth-place Indiana.

What was most surprising about that run was the Bobcats managing to win despite missing some key pieces. Tyrus Thomas played in one of the four victories due to bruised ribs and a sore knee, while Stephen Jackson missed one game and left halfway through the fourth win - 98-97 over Cleveland on March 30 - with a chronic hamstring injury.

The lack of personnel appears to have finally caught up with Charlotte, which is also missing guard Shaun Livingston and forward Eduardo Najera. Thomas and Jackson missed an 89-77 loss at Orlando on Friday and also sat out versus Washington on Sunday, when the nine-man Bobcats couldn't climb out of a 19-point third-quarter hole en route to a potentially crippling 97-91 defeat.

"We made a push and I commend the guys for that, but it's a huge loss," coach Paul Silas said.

Charlotte trails eighth-place Indiana by two games and has two in hand, but the Pacers own the head-to-head tiebreaker by virtue of a season sweep.

Jackson said Monday he won't play against Cleveland, and that's certainly good news for the Cavaliers (15-61). He had averaged 26.5 points in leading the Bobcats to four straight wins in the series prior to leaving last week's victory early.

"If we get some of our guys back it still gives us a chance," Silas told the Bobcats' official website. "I just don't give up. That's not my nature and I don't want it to be the nature of my players."

The Cavaliers experienced an emotional high in their latest home game, a stunning 102-90 win over LeBron James and Miami last Tuesday, but they couldn't carry the momentum to the road. Following the one-point defeat at Charlotte, they struggled defensively in a 115-107 loss at Washington on Friday and fell 123-107 at New York on Sunday.

Cleveland allowed the Wizards to grab 27 offensive boards - the most in the league over the past two seasons - and had a season-high 22 turnovers against the Knicks.

"It is always so hard to win with this team because we are so young and we have so many missing pieces," coach Byron Scott said. "The other night it was offensive rebounds, tonight it was turnovers, it is always something."

The Cavaliers seem unlikely to have similar issues Tuesday. Charlotte is the league's second-worst offensive rebounding team with 9.9 per game and forces the third-fewest turnovers at 13.1.

The Bobcats shot 56.0 percent against Cleveland last week thanks largely to Boris Diaw, who went 11 of 16 and scored 26 points, but they've averaged an NBA-low 87.7 points since Feb. 27.

If the Cavaliers can keep Tuesday's game in the high 80s or low 90s, they should be in good shape. They're 8-2 when holding an opponent to 93 or fewer points.

Sessions leads Cavaliers past Bobcats 99-89

CLEVELAND (AP) Charlotte coach Paul Silas said before Tuesday night's game that it wouldn't be easy for his team to make the playoffs.

A few hours later, the Bobcats' chances looked even more difficult following a 99-89 loss to Cleveland. The injury-depleted Bobcats led only once after scoring the first basket of the game and trailed by 21 points in the first half against the worst team in the league.

Charlotte, which is in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, trails Indiana by 2 1/2 games for the final playoff spot. The Bobcats, losers of three straight, have five games remaining while the Pacers have four games left

The latest defeat left Silas in a foul mood.

"We just went through the motions in the first half," he said. "I'm not gonna have that. We're not gonna do that.

While Silas realizes his team is short-handed, he says that's no excuse for a lack of effort.

"I still expect the guys to go out and perform as well as possible," he said. "I expect guys to rise to the occasion. We certainly didn't do that."

Ramon Sessions scored 18 points to pace seven players in double figures for the Cavaliers, who broke a three-game losing streak.

There isn't much going the Bobcats' way these days. Not only have they dressed just nine players in the past two games, leading scorer Stephen Jackson, who averages 18.5 points, heads the injury list. Jackson has missed three straight games because of a strained left hamstring, an injury that could sideline him the rest of the season.

Forward Tyrus Thomas (sore left knee), guard Shaun Livingston (bruised tailbone) and forward Eduardo Najera (back spasms) were also out for the Bobcats.

The upcoming schedule doesn't provide any good news either since Charlotte's next two games are against Orlando on Wednesday night and Miami on Friday night. The players can see their playoff hopes slipping away.

"We aren't going to make the playoffs if we don't come to play," said guard Gerald Henderson, who scored 15 points. "It's unfortunate to start games like that and expect to play in the postseason. It's just not going to happen if we continue to do that these next few games."

"To lose a game like this, it's definitely a winnable game," center Kwame Brown said. "To get down like we did, that was the ballgame. We've got to win every game we can."

D.J. Augustin led Charlotte with 22 points while Matt Carroll added 13.

J.J. Hickson had 16 points and 19 rebounds for Cleveland. Ryan Hollins, who was 7-from-7 from the field, also scored 16 points while Alonzo Gee added 13.

"Obviously, this was a pretty good win for us," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "I thought the guys really took up the challenge. We had a lot of guys play really well. I told them for 39 (minutes) and some change, we played very, very good basketball."

Augustin's basket 17 seconds into the game gave Charlotte its only lead of the night before the Cavaliers took over. Cleveland raced to an 18-5 lead and was ahead 34-16 after one quarter behind nine points from Hickson and seven apiece from Baron Davis and Gee.

The lead reached 21 points at 51-30 midway through the second quarter. The Cavaliers led 55-38 at halftime, but Charlotte scored the first 10 points of the third quarter. Cleveland didn't score until Davis' free throw at the 6:40 mark. The Cavaliers didn't get a basket in the quarter until Gee's layup with 5:35 remaining.

Charlotte cut the lead to 68-64 late in the period, but the Cavaliers built the lead back to 14 points early in the fourth quarter.

Davis and Luke Harangody scored 11 points apiece while Daniel Gibson added 10 for Cleveland. Dante Cunningham and Brown scored 10 points apiece for the Bobcats.

Cleveland forward Samardo Samuels missed the game with a strained left groin.

NOTES: Silas returned to Quicken Loans Arena for the first time since being fired by the Cavaliers during the 2005 season. Silas coached Cleveland from 2003-05. ... Cleveland G Anthony Parker was scoreless in 30 minutes, going 0 for 8 from the field. The Cavaliers play at Toronto on Wednesday.

THE FACTS: Power forward J.J. Hickson racked up 16 points and 19 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers dealt the Charlotte Bobcats' playoff hopes a crushing blow with a 99-89 victory. Point guard D.J. Augustin had 22 points and eight assists for Charlotte, which trailed by 21 points in the second quarter. The Bobcats fell 2 ½ games behind Indiana in the race for the final Eastern Conference postseason berth.

THE STAT: Hickson completed his 23rd double-double of the season with 5:52 left in the second quarter as the Cavaliers went up 49-28. The third-year pro finished with a career-high 16 defensive rebounds, falling one shy of equaling the Quicken Loans Arena record for a regulation game. Hickson's 19 total boards were one less than his NBA best, which he set at Chicago on Jan. 22.

TURNING POINT: Small forward Alonzo Gee, point guard Baron Davis and Hickson accounted for all of the Cavaliers' points in the first 6:12 as they seized an 18-5 lead. Cleveland would extend its advantage to 45-24 later in the half before Charlotte began contesting shots in the paint. "We just went through the motions in the first half," Silas said. "I'm not gonna have that. We're not gonna do that."

HOT: Cleveland center Ryan Hollins was perfect offensively, going 7-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line in scoring a season-high 16 points. He also negated Bobcats counterpart Kwame Brown on the other end of the court as the Cavaliers were a plus-14 in points in the paint. "Ryan has shown signs he can definitely help us, but he's had lapses, as well," Scott said. "He's still trying to figure it all out."

NOT: Bobcats small forward Boris Diaw was virtually non-existent in the first half with one point, three rebounds and two assists. He hit the glass harder after intermission to finish with 11 boards, but had just three points and five helpers in 38 total minutes. "Kwame and Diaw kicked our butts the last time, but our big guys really took up the challenge tonight," Scott said. "Ryan and J.J., especially."

QUOTABLE III: "We came in and tried to give our fans a show tonight -- and got it done. It's all for them because they stuck by us during our (NBA-record 26-game losing streak) and they continue to give us the energy to play hard every night."

GOOD MOVE: Scott went inside early and often to Hickson and Hollins, capitalizing on Charlotte's rash of frontcourt injuries. Hickson had 14 points and 13 rebounds in the first half, while Hollins dominated the second with 14 points. "That's one of the things about our defense, it kind of breaks down if you give up the lane, and we did that a few times," Brown said. "Also, we weren't defensive rebounding really well."

BAD MOVE: Cavaliers shooting guard Anthony Parker kept firing up the rock, missing all five of his second-half tries to finish 0-for-8 from the field, including 0-for-5 on 3-pointers. The well-respected veteran failed to score in 30 minutes, but did dish out a team-high tying five assists. Cleveland's starting backcourt of Parker and Davis was 0-for-8 shooting over the final two periods and scored one point.

NOTABLE: The Cavaliers improved to 4-21 in games that they lead after one quarter. ... Point guard Ramon Sessions led Cleveland with 18 points off the bench, making his first five field goals and eight free throws. ... With 6:05 left in the fourth quarter, Sessions and Hollins were a combined 10-for-10 from the floor and 10-for-10 from the foul line. They finished the evening 12-for-14 on field goal attempts. ... The Bobcats won the season series 2-1, but failed in their bid to sweep the Cavaliers for the first time since entering the NBA. ... Cleveland rookie guard Manny Harris was the only healthy player not to play on either team.
