The Boston Celtics are in a rut and it's costing them ground in the Eastern Conference race.

They'll look to bounce back and hand the lowly Detroit Pistons a 10th straight road loss Sunday night.

Boston (52-23) has lost four of six to drop into third place in the Eastern Conference, one-half game behind Miami. Both teams are trying to catch Central Division champion Chicago.

"We would like to get 1 or 2," coach Doc Rivers said.

The Celtics' next two road games are against the Bulls and Heat, but first they'll try to recover after splitting a four-game trip. Boston lost the second half of back-to-back sets twice, including Friday's 88-83 loss at Atlanta.

"Either we can quit and go home or we can continue to get better," forward Kevin Garnett said. "There's no history of quitting in this team, so we'll just move forward."

The Celtics were impressive in Thursday's 107-97 win over league-leading San Antonio, shooting 54.8 percent. One night later, they shot 44.6 percent and were outrebounded 52-38 by the Hawks.

"The difference between last night and tonight was the ball didn't move enough," Rivers said Friday. "I thought we took quick, bad shots."

One positive for Boston is that its frontcourt is getting healthier. Jermaine O'Neal returned for the last two games after missing 36 with a knee injury while Shaquille O'Neal is close to coming back after being out since Feb. 1 due to a strained left Achilles' tendon.

The Celtics have won two of three against Detroit (26-49) this season despite minimal contributions from Ray Allen. Allen has averaged 11.7 points on 40.0 percent shooting against the Pistons, and is showing signs of slowing down with a 12.7-point average on 35.6 percent shooting over his last seven games.

Paul Pierce, meanwhile, had a strong trip by averaging 23.0 points. He's averaging 25.3 on 61.4 percent shooting against Detroit this season.

The Pistons are one defeat away from their first consecutive 50-loss campaigns since 1993-94 and '94-95. Detroit has dropped five of six overall after Friday's 101-96 home loss to the Bulls.

Coach John Kuester decided to rest Tracy McGrady due to tired legs and put Will Bynum in the lineup after Rodney Stuckey chose to come off the bench.

"I thought our guys really competed tonight," Kuester said. "I thought they worked hard and they gave us everything they had."

The Pistons made more than half their shots for the third straight game, finishing at 52.0 percent.

Detroit, though, has had at least 20 turnovers every time in that stretch, with 21 on Friday. That hasn't been a major problem for most of the season since the Pistons lead the Eastern Conference in that department with 12.9 per game.

"When you turn the ball over 20 times, that's what kills you," Kuester said. "I thought our guys were really trying hard."

Richard Hamilton had 30 points for his second-highest scoring effort of the season. Hamilton missed both losses to Boston this season and scored nine points off the bench in a 104-92 home victory Dec. 29.

Detroit last dropped 10 straight on the road during an 11-game skid Feb. 24-April 3, 2010.

Boston lost its last two home games to Memphis and Charlotte, the first time all season it has dropped back-to-back home contests.

Celtics coast past Pistons, but lose Shaq

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Celtics got a rare, brief and encouraging glimpse of Shaquille O'Neal before he limped off to the locker room Sunday night.

They can only hope it wasn't their last.

The 39-year-old former NBA MVP returned Sunday night after missing more than two months and scored six points in 5 1/2 minutes to help Celtics beat the Detroit Pistons 101-90. But O'Neal left in the second quarter with a new injury that raised new questions about whether he will be able to contribute in the playoffs.

"I don't know what to do, honestly," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said when asked if O'Neal should be shut down for the rest of the regular season. "My inclination is not, because he needs to play. We have to play at full-tilt in six or seven (games)."

O'Neal was not available for comment because he left before the end of the game, Rivers said; TV showed him walking out of the TD Garden with a slight limp. But Rivers expressed optimism because the injury - explained by the team as a strained right calf - was not the same as the Achilles' tendon strain that had kept him out since Feb. 1.

"The doctor thought it was very minor. Scary more than anything," Rivers said. "But we'll see."

O'Neal's Achilles' injury was originally described as a minor one that would sideline him for just a few games. Asked how long he thought O'Neal would be out this time, Rivers let out a mirthless laugh.

"I don't know, is the answer," he said. "I don't think very long."

Paul Pierce scored 22 points and Rajon Rondo added 14 assists for the Celtics, who remained one-half game behind Miami in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and seemed poised to make a move before O'Neal's new injury.

"He's been out so long, and he tried to do it today without any chance to have any practices," Pierce said. "I just hope he's all right. ... It felt like just having his presence out there was big."

Will Bynum scored 20 points, Tayshaun Prince had 16 and Charlie Villanueva 15 for the Pistons.

O'Neal entered with 4:43 left in the first quarter to a big cheer from the crowd. He scored on Boston's first two possessions and again later before grabbing a seat for the final play of the quarter.

He returned for the start of the second but he lasted just 49 seconds more before limping off to the locker room accompanied by the medical staff. The team said he would be re-evaluated at halftime; at the break, a Celtics spokesman said he would not return.

"He'll be OK. Shaq's always going to be all right," backup Glen "Big Baby" Davis said. "He doesn't get hurt. Shaq is invincible, man. That's what I believe in. He'll be back. Man of steel. That's what I've been believing since I was a little kid."

The Celtics had been counting on O'Neal to take important minutes at center in the playoffs - especially after trading Kendrick Perkins to Oklahoma City for Nenad Krstic, who is day-to-day with a bone bruise in his right knee. Backup center Jermaine O'Neal has had injury problems of his own, playing in just 20 games this season.

"We have to have one of the O'Neals," Rivers said. "And then Krstic has to be healthy. If we have that, we have size."

A 15-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion, O'Neal signed with the Celtics for the veteran's minimum salary last summer for the chance to win another title. He has been limited to 37 games this season and is averaging 9.3 points.

He missed a week in November with a bruised right knee, a week in December with a calf injury and another in January with a sore right hip. He returned for three games - a total of about 34 minutes - before missing the next 27 games with what the team officially has called a sore right leg.

The Pistons led by three points at the end of the first quarter and led 39-38 with 4:29 left in the second before Boston scored the next 11 points to take a double-digit lead. Detroit answered with a 9-0 run of its own to make it a one-point game, 49-48, at the half.

But Boston scored 13 straight points in the third quarter, starting with a 3-pointer and dunk by Pierce, and ending with Garnett's dunk on a feed from Delonte West that made it 80-64.

"They're a veteran team that understands how to finish games," Pistons coach John Kuester said.

NOTES: West tried an alley-oop in the second quarter, but he threw it too hard and it bounced off the backboard and through the net for a 3-pointer. ... The Pistons have lost 50 games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1993-94 and '94-95. They need two wins in their last six games to avoid last year's total of 55 losses. ... Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey did not play. Kuester called it a setback in his "growing process."

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics shot a blistering 64.1 percent from the field, as they cruised to a comfortable 101-90 win over the Detroit Pistons. The victory was overshadowed by the brief return of Shaquille O'Neal to the floor after a 27-game absence. The return that was ultimately cut short due to a strained right calf that forced O'Neal into an early exit to the locker room in the second quarter. Despite the setback, the Celtics overcame the loss of O'Neal with a game-high 23 points from Kevin Garnett. Will Bynum had 20 points for the visitors, who have now lost six of their last seven games.

QUOTABLE: "It's not the same injury as the Achilles. It's not a bad strain, but it's a strain. I don't think he will be out very long honestly."

THE STAT: The Celtics hit a scintillating 78.9 percent of their shots (15-of-19) in the third quarter, which enabled them to outscore the Pistons by 15 points during the frame.

TURNING POINT: The nip-and-tuck affair was broken wide open by Boston in the closing moments of the third quarter, as the C's ran off a 13-0 run to push their lead to double digits. The Pistons got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "Every game is important; we're trying to win out, trying to get ready for the playoffs. The most important thing though, is getting the team healthy now."

HOT: Pierce. The Celtics' captain continues to be the model of efficency for Rivers, as he hit 7 of his 10 shot attempts, for 22 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Pierce has been a reliable contributor in all facets of the game lately, as he is averaging 22.8 points and 7.6 rebounds in his past five games.

NOT: Ben Gordon. The shooting guard failed to live up to his role as a scorer off the bench, as he missed five of his six baskets, including all five from downtown in a two point outing for the reeling Pistons. Gordon's own struggles have coincided with his team's as he averaging just 3.6 points in his last five games.

ROOKIE WATCH: Greg Monroe had a balanced all-around game with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in 33 minutes of action. The former Georgetown star continues to be one of the few bright spots for Detroit during their tumultuous season.

NOTABLE: O'Neal impressed in his five and a half minutes of action of the floor, hitting all three of his shots before going down with the calf injury. The team will announce more on his status at Monday's practice. Jermaine O'Neal earned his first start at the center position for Boston since returning from right knee surgery last week. O'Neal grabbed five points and six rebounds in 17 minutes. Glen Davis played a team-high 36 minutes off the bench. Rodney Stuckey did not play due to a coach's decision. Detroit coach John Kuester confirmed the benching was due to an internal matter. "One of the things that happens is this is a growing process. In that growing process, he had a slight setback," Kuester said. Boston outrebounded Detroit 37-26. The Celtics had 21 turnovers and 15 fast break points. With the victory, Boston remains 1/2-game back of Miami for the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
