Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew is glad to see his team finally competing with some playoff-caliber intensity.

Coach Rick Adelman will need to see more of that type of effort if his Houston Rockets are going to advance to the postseason.

The Hawks go for their fifth straight victory Sunday night when they try to snap the Rockets' six-game home winning streak.

After Atlanta allowed 98.9 points per game on 48.0 percent shooting during a 3-8 stretch from March 4-23, Drew has been pleased with his team's defensive effort during its winning streak. The Hawks' opponents are averaging 83.8 points and hitting 42.6 percent in the last four contests.

"I've been waiting for this kind of quality effort," Drew said after Atlanta rallied from 12 down in the third quarter Friday for an 88-83 home win over Boston. "Certainly I see signs, but I'm not going to go out on a limb and say they're there."

While the Hawks (44-32) will likely finish fifth in the Eastern Conference, the Rockets (40-36) need to continue their push over their final six games - and get some help - to avoid missing the playoffs for the second straight season.

Houston, which has won seven of nine overall, opened a three-game homestand Friday with a 119-114 overtime victory over league-best San Antonio. The Rockets hung on after their 11-point third-quarter lead was erased.

"It was a win that, when you look back on it, with everything that was riding (on it), playing the best team in the league, you have to give our guys a lot of credit - they never cracked," Adelman said.

The Rockets remain in ninth place in the West, but they still need to close a significant gap if they hope to reach the postseason.

"We're in a little playoff series," said forward Luis Scola. "We've got six games left and we need to win them all."

The Rockets were used to winning at home against Atlanta, but the Hawks ended a 10-game skid in Houston in their last visit, a 102-95 victory Jan. 25, 2010. Atlanta had won just once in its previous 17 road games in this series.

With help from Scola's 20 points and 16 apiece from Kyle Lowry and Jordan Hill, the Rockets returned the favor Jan. 15, ending Atlanta's 10-game home winning streak with a 112-106 victory.

Rockets leading scorer Kevin Martin had just 10 points in that matchup, but he has been outstanding lately, scoring 26.3 points per game - 3.0 more than his season average - during the team's 7-2 run.

Al Horford, who recorded his 35th double-double Friday with 16 points and 15 rebounds, is averaging team highs with 17.5 points and 11.5 boards during Atlanta's winning streak.

Four other Hawks are scoring at least 13.0 points per game during this run - Atlanta's longest since a five-game streak Jan. 2-12.

Houston's home winning streak is its longest since a season-high eight-game surge from Nov. 24-Dec. 27.

Martin, Scola leads Rockets past Hawks 114-109

HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Rockets are rolling at the right time. All they can do is hope it's enough to get them into the playoffs.

Kevin Martin scored 35 points, Luis Scola added 12 of his 15 in the second half and the Rockets won their seventh straight home game on Sunday night, a 114-109 win over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Rockets have won eight of their last 10 but remain three games behind New Orleans and Memphis in the race for the No. 8 playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Hornets beat Indiana on Sunday night, and the Grizzlies were idle.

"We just keep hanging in there," Houston coach Rick Adelman said. "That's all we can do."

Houston rallied from 14 points down in the first half, and led 107-104 after Scola's jumper from the top of the key with 1:32 remaining. He buried another one from the same spot about a minute later to stretch the lead to 109-105, and Houston made five free throws after that to secure the win.

But the Rockets have only five games left to catch the Hornets or Grizzlies. Houston plays Sacramento on Tuesday and visits New Orleans on Wednesday - with virtually no margin for error.

"Every game now is huge for us," Scola said. "We just want to stay alive. You don't know what's going to happen. We can't control New Orleans or Memphis. We are going to keep playing hard and try to keep winning games."

The Hawks, who had won four straight, were led by Joe Johnson's 25 points. The Rockets shot 57 percent (43 of 75) to beat Atlanta for the 11th time in the last 12 meetings in Houston.

"Looking back on those last four wins, we were much better defensively," Hawks coach Larry Drew said.

Each of Houston's starting five finished in double figures as Chuck Hayes added 19 points, Kyle Lowry had 17 and Chase Budinger scored 11.

"It's a big win for us," Lowry said, "just to keep playing and being resilient."

But the Hawks shot 57.5 percent in the first half and scored 40 points in the second quarter to lead 63-54 at the break. Adelman ripped his team's energy level at halftime, and the Rockets responded by holding Atlanta to 18 points in the third.

"We just weren't giving a consistent effort between the first and second quarters," Martin said. "Against a team like that, we just needed to step it up a little bit. They were controlling the game."

The Rockets led by five points with about 6 1/2 minutes remaining before Atlanta used a 10-2 run to take a 102-99 lead with just under 4 minutes remaining. Johnson scored six straight points in that span.

Houston answered with six straight points, including four from Martin, to regain the lead, 105-102, before the key shots by Scola. The Rockets finished with 56 points in the paint.

"That's way too many," said Atlanta forward Josh Smith, who scored 21. "We've got to make it more stingy. If we would have closed in some of those gaps and made them kick out to shooters, I would think it might have been a different outcome."

Smith also had 11 rebounds and Jamal Crawford scored 15 off the bench for Atlanta.

The Rockets offset their 3-of-15 shooting from 3-point range by going 25 of 29 from the free throw line. Martin went 12 for 13 from the line and reached 30 points for the fourth time this season. He's hit 20 points in 10 of his last 11 games.

"He's a scorer, that's what he does," Hawks guard Jeff Teague said. "When someone is putting that much pressure on you at all times, they're going to be a tough person to guard."

Crawford had 11 points in the second quarter to help the Hawks to a 63-49 lead with 35 seconds left in the half. Martin had 10 second-quarter points to keep the Rockets in range.

The score was tied eight times in the first quarter. The Hawks recovered from an early 8-0 run by Houston and scored the final six points of the period for a 23-21 lead, completing an 11-2 run. Smith had five points in the charge.

Notes: The Rockets have overcome a double-digit deficit in 10 games this season. ... Smith has 31 double-doubles this season, 14th most in the NBA. ... Lowry needed six stitches to close a cut on his upper lip after he was elbowed by Zaza Pachulia in the first quarter. Lowry was seething about it after the game. "It was a dirty play by him," Lowry said. ... Atlanta's Marvin Williams scored 11 points to leave him just one point away from 5,000 in his career. ... Former Hawk and Rocket Dikembe Mutombo visited the Houston locker room after the game.

THE FACTS: Time may have already run out on the Houston Rockets' playoff hopes, but they continue to play their best with their backs against the wall.

The Rockets rallied from a 11-point second-half deficit to snap the Atlanta Hawks' four-game winning streak and take a 119-114 victory Sunday at Toyota Center. Kevin Martin led all scorers with 35 points on 11-for-19 shooting, while Chuck Hayes posted his second straight double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Josh Smith led a balanced Atlanta attack with 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Joe Johnson added a team-high 25 points and seven assists for the Hawks (44-33), who blew a chance to gain ground on the Orlando Magic for home-court advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

QUOTABLE: "Our energy level rose in that third quarter. We started attacking offensively. We got more active defensively."

THE STAT: After allowing 12 points off 10 turnovers in the first half, Houston became more efficient with the ball and in transition defensively. The Rockets committed just four turnovers in the second half, leading to only four points for Atlanta.

TURNING POINT: The Hawks went on a 7-0 run to build a 72-61 lead with 9:18 left in the third quarter. But the Rockets responded by attacking the basket for five layups and making a couple mid-range jumpers to pull even at 77 with 4:54 remaining in the third.

TURNING POINT II: Atlanta used a 12-4 spurt to take a 102-99 lead with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter. But Martin and Luis Scola (six points, 3-for-3 shooting in the fourth) stepped up with big buckets, combining for all of Houston's points during a 10-3 run that gave the Rockets a 109-105 edge with 25.8 seconds remaining.

GOOD MOVE: Adelman placed Courtney Lee on Johnson during the closing minutes of the game in an attempt to silence the Hawks' top offensive threat. The move paid off, as Johnson committed a pair of turnovers and was held to just one layup over the final 3:30 of the contest.

HOT: Atlanta scored from all over the court in the first half, shooting 23-for-40 (57.5 percent) as a team. Only one of the eight Hawks who played before halftime [Jamal Crawford] missed more than half of his shots, displaying the balance Atlanta found offensively. ... The Rockets caught fire after the break, making 13 of 20 field-goal attempts in the third quarter.

BAD MOVE: The Hawks' scorching shooting before halftime led to their downfall in the third quarter, as Atlanta fell in love with the perimeter game and drained only seven of 21 shots (33.3 percent) in that period. Instead of utilizing their size and speed advantage with post-ups, the Hawks simply relied on poor shot selection.

NOT: Houston, which had connected on 43.8 percent (57-for-130) of its 3-point attempts over the last six games entering Sunday, failed to find a rhythm from the perimeter and finished 3-for-15 (20.0 percent) from behind the arc.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Martin continued to pour in points for his fantasy owners, netting his 10th 20-point outing and fourth 30-point performance in the last 11 games. He also handed out five assists and pulled down four rebounds, but his three turnovers damaged his overall production.

ROOKIE WATCH: Houston forward Patrick Patterson scored eight points on 4-for-5 shooting, snatched two boards, handed out one assist and stole the ball once in 16-plus minutes on the court. His energy off the bench was more vital to the Rockets' success than the box scores may indicate.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Talk-radio personality and comedian Dennis Miller attended Sunday's game.

NOTABLE: Adelman (933 career wins) needs one more victory to tie Bill Fitch for eighth all-time on the NBA regular-season coaching wins list...Houston's Kyle Lowry left the game during the first quarter after Hawks center Zaza Pachulia inadvertently elbowed him in his face on a drive to the hoop. Lowry returned in the second period after receiving six stitches in the left side of his upper lip...Atlanta's 40 second-quarter points set season highs in points allowed during the second quarter by Houston and points scored in the second period by the Hawks...Atlanta has lost 11 of its last 12 meetings with the Rockets in Houston...In addition to snapping the Hawks' four-game win streak Sunday, the Rockets halted Atlanta's five-game run of victories with a 112-106 win Jan. 15 at Atlanta...Houston improved to 6-2 since the All-Star break in games decided by five points or less.
