The Los Angeles Lakers have gone 16-1 since the All-Star break to move within striking distance of San Antonio for the top spot in the Western Conference.

Though the Lakers will be short-handed Friday night, that may not matter much when they visit the injury-riddled Utah Jazz.

Los Angeles (54-20) saw three players ejected following a pair of fourth-quarter skirmishes in a 110-82 rout of Dallas on Thursday.

Steve Blake took exception to a hard foul on a two-handed shove by Dallas' Jason Terry, and the ensuing tussle led to them being tossed. Matt Barnes came to Blake's defense and also was ejected with the Mavs' Brendan Haywood. Shannon Brown was thrown out after a separate incident.

"This is a family here," said Barnes, who was suspended earlier Friday for this game by the NBA. "So if someone comes and hits your brother, pushes your brother, then you definitely have their back. And that's the case here."

Despite the ejections and suspension, Kobe Bryant said incidents such as this can do a team good.

"It brings us closer together, simple as that," said Bryant, who wasn't involved in either fracas and is averaging 34.3 points over his last four games after finishing with 28.

Andrew Bynum added 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Pau Gasol chipped in 20 points as Los Angeles pulled within 2 1/2 games of the struggling Spurs, who will try to avoid their sixth loss in a row earlier Friday night.

Following narrow victories over Phoenix in triple overtime and the Los Angeles Clippers last week, the Lakers have started winning in dominating fashion again, blowing out New Orleans and the Mavericks by a combined 46 points.

"It just shows that we're geared up," Bryant told the NBA's official website. "We're getting really close to being ready and we're locked in and focused. When we're like that, we're a tough team to beat."

The Lakers convincingly beat the Jazz in the most recent meeting as Bryant scored 21 and Gasol 20 in a 120-91 victory on Jan. 25.

The Jazz (36-39) come in having dropped six straight, and out of the playoff picture by going 5-16 since Ty Corbin replaced longtime coach Jerry Sloan. Utah fell 100-95 in overtime Monday against Washington, which entered the game an NBA-worst 1-35 on the road.

C.J. Miles scored a team-high 17 points, but was 3 of 12 from 3-point range and 1 of 4 in overtime.

The Jazz have not lost seven straight since a nine-game skid from March 4-19, 2005.

"It don't hurt no more than it did against the second-best team in the West, the Mavericks," forward Paul Millsap said referring to Saturday's 94-77 loss. "It's losing, period."

Making matters worse, starters Andrei Kirilenko (bruised nerve in left knee), Devin Harris (strained hamstring) and Raja Bell (strained left calf) have been ruled out against the Lakers. Backup guard Ronnie Price also is out indefinitely with a strained leg muscle.

Rookies Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors logged considerable minutes, scoring 12 and 11, respectively. Corbin lauded their performances and the two will be expected to contribute more given the number of injuries.

"The young guys were playing well," Corbin said. "They played hard and I thought they deserved to be on the floor."

Al Jefferson had 16 rebounds to go with 15 points, but Corbin did not play Jefferson in overtime. Rumors swirled of a rift between the two, but both insisted there is no issue.

The Jazz defeated the Lakers 102-96 on Nov. 26 despite 31 points from Bryant.

Bryant, Lakers eliminate Jazz from playoff hunt

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Even though he was sick to his stomach before the game, Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom needed just one glance around the locker room to get motivated to play anyway.

"Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher, Pau Gasol ... are great and they don't miss games because they're hurt or tired or sick," Odom said. "You learn from the greatness and it rubs off on you."

Odom scored 16 points off the bench to go along with Bryant's 21, and the Lakers erased a 17-point, first-half deficit Friday night to beat Utah 96-85 and eliminate the Jazz from the playoff race.

Utah (36-40) becomes the first team in NBA history to start 15-5 and 27-13 and not make the playoffs.

The Lakers, meanwhile, have won nine straight and are within 1 1/2 games of first-place San Antonio in the Western Conference. If they win out, including beating the Spurs on April 12, they can claim the top seed in the West.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson wasn't banking on it, even after seeing his team outscore the Jazz 52-35 in the second half following an emotional win Thursday night over Dallas. The Lakers are 17-1 since the All-Star break.

"We've played very well (but) we can go out and have a stinker like we had in the first half and lose a ballgame," Jackson said. "We may not have that energy in the second half to come back and win, and it's asking a lot of a team to continue at that pace. We want to do it and we have every urgency to do it, but the odds are against us. It's still a real tough thing to do."

The Jazz did their best to stop the streak despite starting their 17th different lineup and having only nine healthy players, including one who just joined the team two days earlier and was playing out of position.

With a big lineup that included 7-foot-1 Kyrylo Fesenko making only his third career start, and Al Jefferson moving to power forward and Paul Millsap to small forward, the Jazz started strong.

They jumped to a 26-13 lead with 3 minutes left in the first quarter following a dunk by C.J. Miles (24 points) off an alley-oop pass from Earl Watson, who had a few words for a Lakers fan seated courtside.

Utah increased its lead to 41-24 after an 11-0 run in the second quarter. Rookie Gordon Hayward had five points during the run, while forward Derrick Favors scored off a baseline drive and Paul Millsap added a putback dunk. Guard Kyle Weaver, called up from the NBA Development League on Wednesday, capped the run with a pair of free throws.

The Lakers finished the half on a 10-0 run of their own, including Bryant's driving layup and free throws that pulled Los Angeles to 48-42 at halftime.

"Fesenko did a great job on (Andrew) Bynum," Jackson said, noting the Jazz held a 30-10 advantage in the paint in the first half. "He bodied him off his shot, blocked a couple of his shots. They really took it to us, but we did little bit better movement of the ball as the game went on."

It was all Lakers in the second half.

Fisher (15 points) tied the score at 62 on a 3-pointer with 4:06 left in the third quarter, and Shannon Brown gave them the lead for good when Fesenko was called for goaltending.

Jazz coach Ty Corbin, who was without starters Andrei Kirilenko, Raja Bell and Devin Harris, and reserve guard Ronnie Price, was disappointed that the Jazz postseason hopes officially ended.

"We can't get in now, but we'll continue to play hard, try and win ballgames and develop the guys," said Corbin, who is 5-17 since taking over for Jerry Sloan after he retired Feb. 10. "We've still got to create who we are. So we got to continue to try to play right and try to see what number of wins we can get."

Asked about making history with the colossal midseason collapse, Corbin shrugged.

"I don't know how many teams have been through what we have since we started 15-5," Corbin said of Sloan's sudden retirement, the Deron Williams trade and injuries to so many key players. "We've continued to fight."

The game in all likelihood was the last in Salt Lake City for Jackson, who has said this will be his final season.

As Lakers coach, Jackson was just 10-12 in games played in Utah.

"This isn't in my zone of comfort," Jackson said before the game. "I may just drive down here (from my ranch in Montana) and see a game sometime."

Odom wouldn't be surprised.

"He loves the game (and) we all appreciate the atmosphere here," Odom said.

Notes: Jazz Hall of Famer John Stockton was at Friday night's game with his family, apparently in town to see his son play in a basketball exhibition. ... Al Jefferson (17 points) has started every game for the Jazz this season but this was his first start at power forward. ... Jackson was named Western Conference coach of the month on Friday and Bryant the Western Conference player of the month ... Bryant went down hard twice once after getting tripped up by Miles and being fouled intentionally by Fesenko but he continued to play... The Jazz outrebounding the Lakers 28-18 in the first half and limiting them to 39.4 percent shooting....The Lakers were without forward Matt Barnes, who was suspended without pay after getting into a fight with Mavericks guard Jason Terry.

THE FACTS: Kobe Bryant scored 21 points as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Utah Jazz 96-85 on Friday night to win their ninth straight game.

Derek Fisher and Lamar Odom each had 16 points for the Lakers, who improved to 17-1 since the All-Star break.

For the Jazz, who have lost seven straight games and were eliminated from the Western Conference playoff race on Friday, C.J. Miles had 24 points.

QUOTABLE: "I think we were down 17 points in the first half and we led by 18 in the second half. That was it -- 17 and 18. We started playing defense and they turned the ball over a few times. It changed the game."

THE STAT: 30-18. There was a big discrepancy in free throws attempted, as the Lakers attacked the basket more than the Jazz and got the calls when they did. Los Angeles attempted 30 free throws, making 21 of them. Utah was 15-for-18 from the free-throw line.

TURNING POINT: The Lakers closed the third quarter on a 12-2 run to take control of the game. It started with a 3-pointer by Fisher that tied the game at 62-62. The Lakers then took their first lead of the game since 7-5 when Shannon Brown made a layup. After Steve Blake scored on a fast-break layup, Blake threw a sweet alley-oop to a hard-charging Pau Gasol. Odom capped the spurt, and took the wind out of the Jazz with a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left in the third to give Los Angeles a 71-64 lead.

QUOTABLE II: "It was a stupid way to spend $2,000."
-- Jazz center Kyrylo Fesenko on getting a technical foul in the third quarter. After he fouled Bryant hard, knocking him to the ground, he dropped the ball on him to earn the technical.

HOT: The Lakers closed the second quarter on a 10-0 run, making what was a 16-point deficit much more manageable. They then went on to dominate the third quarter, shooting 58.8 percent while outscoring the Jazz 29-16.

NOT: The Lakers missed seven of their first nine shots to start the second quarter. Andrew Bynum missed his first three field-goal attempts, and first four free throws. The Jazz didn't score in the final 3:35 of the second quarter, missing seven straight shots. They continued their cold shooting in the third quarter, making 7-for-19 attempts.

GOOD MOVE: L.A. simply started playing better defense to turn the game in its favor. The Lakers had little life after Thursday's emotional win over the Mavericks, but got the momentum on their side against Utah with effort plays, rebounding and defense.

BAD MOVE: Fesenko's hard foul and technical got the Lakers fired up. L.A. was down 60-58 at the time, and then went on to outscore the Jazz 13-4 in the final 5:32 of the third quarter. Fesenko said he got caught up in the moment and regretted the foul and technical.

FANTASY WATCH: Odom continued his bid for the league's Sixth Man of the Year award with another strong showing. In addition to the 16 points he scored, he had seven rebounds. Those numbers were close to his solid off-the-bench averages of 14.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Jazz Hall of Famer John Stockton watched the game from the lower bowl. When he was introduced to the crowd and shown on the video screen at the end of the third quarter, he got a standing ovation from Jazz fans and the sizable number of Laker fans in the crowd.

ROOKIE WATCH: Derrick Favors was the most productive of Utah's three rookies, finishing with six points and six rebounds in nearly 17 minutes. Gordon Hayward had seven points and three rebounds in 29-plus minutes. Jeremy Evans was twice whistled for basket interference on offense and did not score.

NOTABLE: Injuries forced the Jazz to use their 17th different starting lineup this season. The Lakers have used just two different starting lineups this season. Bryant has played against the Jazz 73 times and averages 25 points against them. The Jazz will miss the playoffs for the first time in five years.
