Pistons-Pacers Preview

A win by the playoff-hopeful Indiana Pacers over one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference might usually have coach Frank Vogel thrilled. That wasn't the case when that victory came two days after a loss to the lowly Detroit Pistons.

The inconsistent Pacers hope to build on their latest win and exact some revenge Wednesday night when they host the Pistons.

Indiana (33-42) owns a one-game lead over Charlotte in the race for the East's final playoff spot, and swept the season series from the Bobcats with a 23-point victory in Charlotte last Wednesday.

Any momentum gained from that big win was quickly lost when the Pacers proceeded to drop their next two games to Sacramento and Detroit - two of the NBA's worst teams. Indiana rebounded from those defeats with Monday's 107-100 win over Boston, which is battling for the conference's top seed.

"One day, probably when I'm old and gray, I'll try to figure out what was wrong with us - why we can beat Boston, but lose to Sacramento and Detroit," Vogel said. "I can't figure it out, but we definitely needed this. We're going to have to figure it out at some point."

A couple of obvious reasons the Pacers lost 100-88 to the Pistons on Saturday were their starters struggling offensively and the whole team playing poor defense.

Indiana's starting lineup had 45 points - 21 fewer than it had Monday - on 40.4 percent shooting with more turnovers (14) than assists (13). Reserve Brandon Rush had a team-high 19 points for the Pacers, who fell to 0-22 when failing to score more than 92.

They allowed Detroit (26-47) to shoot 51.3 percent and reach the century mark for the first time in five games. The Pistons, idle since that matchup, are 21-12 when they hit triple digits but just 5-35 when they don't.

Richard Hamilton led Detroit with 23 points, while Charlie Villanueva scored 13 playing the entire fourth quarter after watching the first three from the sidelines. Coach John Kuester benched Villanueva for all of Friday's 97-91 loss to Cleveland.

"I expected the same amount of time as last game, but at the same time I had to be ready," Villanueva said. "We have nine or 10 games left. I'm not really worried about it. Whatever coach wants to do, I'll back him up."

The Pistons are on the verge of playoff elimination, six games back of Indiana with nine to play.

While the Pacers struggled defensively down the stretch Saturday, allowing Detroit to make 10 of 19 shots in the fourth quarter, they did a much better job late against Boston. Indiana limited the Celtics to 4-of-14 shooting in the fourth while outscoring them 26-15.

Roy Hibbert took advantage of Boston's depleted front line to lead the Pacers on Monday with 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting. Two days earlier, Hibbert had six points on 3-of-10 shooting versus Detroit.

Tyler Hansbrough had five points Monday but could be in line for a better performance after scoring 16 against the Pistons. Hansbrough has alternated good and bad outings in his last six games, averaging 18.0 points on 60.0 percent shooting in three and 6.7 points on 30.8 percent shooting in the other three.

Pacers use early run, top Pistons 111-101

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers started slowly in a subpar first quarter.

It was a different story once the second quarter started.

Darren Collison scored 20 points and Danny Granger had 17, and Indiana used a 31-12 run in the second quarter to produce a 111-101 win over Detroit on Wednesday night.

"We knew we had to get the game," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "We took it to them. Our bench was spectacular again."

The Pacers, 34-42 with six games remaining, maintained their grip on the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They're one game ahead of 32-42 Charlotte, which defeated Cleveland 98-97.

Josh McRoberts added a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds and Roy Hibbert scored 12 points.

"Our depth is probably our greatest strength," Vogel said. "We're playing as a team. We play together. When we play that way, we're pretty good."

Detroit, 11th in the conference, slipped to 26-48 with its fourth loss in five games. The only win was a 100-88 defeat of the Pacers on Saturday.

Rodney Stuckey came off the bench to lead the Pistons with 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting. Richard Hamilton had 19, Tayshaun Prince and Greg Monroe 14 each and Chris Wilcox 10.

The loss also extended Detroit's string of road losses to nine, a skid of nearly two months. The Pistons' last win away from home was a 103-94 win at Cleveland on Feb. 9.

"It is something we are going to have to fix," Monroe said. "We are going to have to bring extra energy on the road. We just have to match the other team's intensity."

Mike Dunleavy returned to the Pacers' lineup after missing 19 games with a broken thumb and scored nine points on 3-of-9 shooting.

The Pacers used two big inside plays early in the second quarter to change the game from a seesaw affair.

Jeff Foster came off the bench to follow a missed shot, drew the foul and made the free throw. On the Pacers' next possession, Josh McRoberts did the same, converting a missed shot, drawing the foul and making the free throw.

The Pacers subsequently ran off strings of 17-4 and 14-4, turning a five-point deficit into a 14-point, 55-41 lead 1:54 before the half.

Foster scored six points to key the first run; Price led the way in the second spurt by scoring six.

"We try to bring a little bit of energy," McRoberts said of joining Foster off the bench. "Not that the first team didn't have it; we just need to pick it up a little bit, and we were able to, I guess.

"Jeff makes it a lot easier. He takes at least one or two guys away from me, so I have a little bit more off an opportunity to get to the glass."

During those stretches, the Pistons made just four of 17 field goals.

Granger scored nine points as the Pacers opened the second half with a 15-4 run, extending their lead to 74-51 with 8:04 still remaining in the third period. Detroit missed four of six field goals during Indiana's run.

"Indiana just got into a groove," Monroe said. "They just started executing and started hitting shots and getting easy cuts to the basket. We were flat. We didn't respond to any of their runs today."

Granger said the Pacers "just turned it on."

"We got a few steals, got out in transition," he said. "That pretty much gave us the cushion that we needed for the rest of the game."

Hamilton and Stuckey led a late charge that trimmed the deficit to 105-95 with 2:15 remaining, but Detroit could draw no closer than eight points after that.

"We're trying different things right now, trying to get something going so we can win that road game," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "But I'll tell you, our energy is so much better at home, compared to on the road."

THE FACTS: Getting balanced scoring across the roster and led by Darren Collison's 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting, the Indiana Pacers held onto the final playoff spot in the East with a 111-101 victory over the visiting Detroit Pistons on Wednesday at Conseco Fieldhouse. Indiana built a 25-point third-quarter lead and hung on as the Pistons made a late run behind Rodney Stuckey, who scored 12 of his game-high 24 in the final period. With the victory, Indiana (34-42) remained one game ahead of ninth-place Charlotte (32-42) and three games up on 10th-place Milwaukee (30-44) with a showdown against the Bucks looming Friday.

THE STAT: Indiana improved to 21-16 at home, ensuring its 22nd consecutive season with a winning home record, the longest such streak in the NBA.

TURNING POINT: The Pacers took control of the game with a 25-8 run in the second quarter that turned a 29-24 deficit into a 49-37 lead. Reserves accounted for 21 of those points. The starters then opened the second half with a 15-4 run, including nine points from Danny Granger, to push the lead to 74-51. Indiana was coasting 101-78 when the Pistons struck with a 21-6 run to get as close as eight in the final minute it the Pacers closed it out at the line.

QUOTABLE II: "It was good to be back on the floor and be competing. ... My legs felt good and I felt good overall. I was just glad to be back out there and hopefully help my teammates."

NOTABLE: The game marked the 2,000th broadcast in the career of Indiana radio play-by-play man Mark Boyle. ... Pacers center Roy Hibbert incurred a bruised left knee in a hard fall to the floor midway through the third period but he returned to the game in the fourth and the injury is not believed to be serious. ... The Pacers have beaten all three Eastern Conference division leaders (Celtics, Bulls and Heat) and three of the top five teams in the West (Lakers, Mavs and Nuggets). They've also lost to five of the six cellar-dwellars (Raptors, Wizards, Rockets, Timberwolves and Kings). ... Now that he's back after missing 20 games with a broken left thumb, Dunleavy will take Dahntay Jones' spot in the rotation for the next couple of games and Paul George will remain the starter at shooting guard. ... Ben Wallace (sore knee) missed his fourth straight game but coach John Kuester said he hopes the veteran big man will return before the end of the season. ...
