Mavericks-Clippers Preview

The Dallas Mavericks have arrived in Los Angeles to face the city's two NBA teams in consecutive nights at Staples Center.

Their games against the Clippers at the arena have typically been much easier.

Before their highly anticipated matchup with the surging Lakers, the Mavericks look to win their ninth straight over the Clippers on Wednesday night.

Dallas (52-21) is one game back of the Lakers for second place in the Western Conference and will play the two-time defending champions Thursday. The Mavericks have lost five of six against the Lakers at Staples, but have had no such trouble beating the Clippers there.

Dallas has won four straight over the Clippers (29-45) in Los Angeles by an average of 17.5 points, taking the most recent road meeting with them 99-83 on Oct. 31.

The Mavericks also beat the Clippers 112-105 at home Jan. 25 for their eighth win in a row in the series and 14th in 15 meetings. Los Angeles' losing streak against Dallas is its longest against any West opponent.

The Mavericks relied on balanced scoring in the first two meetings, with Jason Terry averaging 21.5 points, Dirk Nowitzki 18.0 and Caron Butler 17.0. Dallas has also done a good job of containing Blake Griffin.

The Clippers' rookie star has averaged 19.0 points, 35.5 percent shooting and 10.0 rebounds in those contests. He is averaging 22.5 points, 50.6 percent from the field and 12.1 boards against the rest of the league.

While Dallas has had little trouble with the Clippers lately, it struggled to get in gear against Phoenix on Monday.

Tied at 83 with 1:11 remaining, Jason Kidd hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and then added two free throws to lead the Mavericks to a 91-83 victory.

"These kinds of games come down to will and toughness and I give our guys a lot of credit," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Our shots weren't falling all night. We struggled with turnovers early and to just hang in and come in to huddles and talking about how we're going to get it done.

"That's progress for us and we've just got to keep building on that."

Dallas, which shot 38.1 percent, got a team-high 16 points from Kidd, Terry and Tyson Chandler. Nowitzki went 6 of 19 from the floor and scored 15.

"Shooting 38 percent from the field and still being able to beat a good offensive team and being able to hold them to 83 points is a huge accomplishment for us," Chandler said. "We had to buckle down and understand what it was going to take for us to win."

Chandler has not missed a shot from the field or free-throw line against the Clippers this season. He was 2 of 2 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line Oct. 31, and made all five field-goal attempts while going 11 of 11 on foul shots Jan. 25.

The Mavericks, an NBA-best 26-10 on the road, are 2-0 on their season-high six-game trip.

The Clippers, winners of 14 of 18 at home, haven't played since a 94-90 victory over Toronto at Staples Center on Saturday. Griffin had 22 points and 16 rebounds, while Chris Kaman finished with 17 points and 12 boards for Los Angeles, which closed the game on a 20-8 run.

"We just switched up our defense and got stops, then went out in transition," said Griffin, averaging 25.7 points in his last three games.

The Clippers are looking to win back-to-back contests for the first time since a season-best four-game run from March 2-9.

Mavs beat Clippers to improve NBA-best road mark

LOS ANGELES (AP) So much for Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd trying to call it an early night with the Lakers awaiting. The Los Angeles Clippers wouldn't allow it.

Both of Dallas' stars were needed in the fourth quarter, when the Mavericks rallied to win 106-100 Wednesday night and improve the NBA's best road record to 27-10.

Nowitzki scored 24 points playing nearly 37 minutes, including almost all of the fourth, to beat back the scrappy Clippers. Kidd was hoping to sit out the final period, but he was needed for 2 1/2 minutes to ensure the Mavs secured their fifth straight win.

"We wanted to get some momentum going into tomorrow," Nowitzki said. "We had a good lead and didn't close the game out the way we wanted to."

The victory moved the Mavs within a half-game of the second-place Lakers in the West, with the No. 2 seed up for grabs when they play Thursday night.

"It's not the end of the world to be (No.) 3, but we're going for it," Nowitzki said.

He missed the first of two free throws midway through the period, snapping his streak of 74 in a row - longest in the league this season - that dated to the fourth quarter against Indiana on March 4.

Nowitzki got ample chance to make up for it, when Mo Williams was hit with consecutive technicals and ejected with 6:02 remaining and Nowitzki made both. Blake Griffin got a technical about 42 seconds earlier.

"We lost control of the game when we had all those technical fouls," Eric Gordon said. "That gave them a good run and those were free points we gave them. They just got a lot of calls."

Griffin had 25 points and 17 rebounds for his 57th double-double, and in the process set a franchise rookie record for most points in a season. He came off the bench in the fourth to erase most of the Clippers' 16-point deficit, scoring six points in an 11-0 run that left them trailing 96-91 with 3:20 left.

"It started with Jamario Moon hitting a 3. After that, they made a layup and get to the free throw line and all the sudden it's under 10," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "Then the building is into it and we had to answer. This is a good win for us."

Jose Barea answered with five straight points to push the Mavs' lead to 101-91. He finished with 22 points. Kidd had 10 assists.

"We keep pushing the tempo and keep coming. We don't panic," Kidd said.

Earlier in the fourth, Nowitzki scored six points - four on free throws - in the Mavs' 13-1 run that produced their first double-digit lead of the game, 96-80. Nowitzki missed another free throw in the final minute.

Gordon added 15 points and Williams scored 19 points, making all nine of his free throws for the Clippers, who've lost nine in a row and 15 of their last 16 to the Mavs. Dallas has won its last five road games against the Clippers.

Down by six with 7 seconds left, Gordon airballed a 3-point attempt.

"I just couldn't get easy baskets," he said. "They didn't let me get into the lane. When that happens, you end up with just long-range shots."

The teams traded leads in a tight third quarter. With the Clippers leading by one, the Mavs outscored them 12-6 to lead 75-70 going into the fourth. Peja Stojakovic and Brian Cardinal hit 3-pointers in the spurt.

The Clippers blew a 13-point lead in the first, when Williams scored their first nine points. Dallas tied the game at 44 late in the second and scored the final two baskets to lead 48-46 at the break.

Notes: The Mavs improved to 13-1 against the Pacific Division, with their only loss to the Lakers. ... The Clippers' franchise record for double-doubles is 69 set by Bob McAdoo in 1974-75, when the team was in Buffalo. ... The crowd of 19,060 was the Clippers' 16th sellout of the season.

Mavericks-Clippers notebook

THE FACTS: The Dallas Mavericks didn't get caught looking head to their key match up 24 hours later against the Los Angeles Lakers, holding off the Los Angeles Clippers, 106-100, on Wednesday night at Staples Center.

QUOTABLE: "Even though we got out of the gate slow, we were able to get the stops we needed."

THE STAT: The Mavericks extended their winning streak to nine games against the Clippers and have won 15 of the last 16 against Los Angeles.

TURNING POINT: Dallas didn't take its first lead until five seconds remained in the first half. A 14-6 run late in the third quarter finally gave the Mavericks the lead for good, 75-68, though the Clippers did cut the deficit to two points early in the fourth quarter. The final blow was a 13-1 run that gave Dallas a 96-80 lead with 5 ½ minutes remaining.

QUOTABLE II: "We had one turnover in the first quarter and the Mavericks had six, and we were winning. We had 17 in the last three quarters and they got us back on our heels a little bit."

HOT: Dallas back-up point guard J.J. Barea scored 22 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field, his first 20-point game since Feb. 9 against Sacramento.

NOT: Dallas back-up shooting guard Jason Terry was 2-for-11 from the field and scored six points to match his lowest output of the season. The Clippers committed eight of their 17 turnovers in the second quarter.

GOOD MOVE: After falling behind by 13 points in the opening quarter, Dallas coach Rick Carlisle went to his bench and Peja Stojakovic responded with six points in the final five minutes of the opening quarter to help cut the deficit back to five entering the second.

BAD MOVE: Clippers starting point guard Mo Williams seemed to be getting plenty of calls through the first three quarters, getting to the free-throw line eight times during that stretch, but he didn't like the way he was treated in the fourth and received back-to-back technical fouls during the 13-1 run.

ROOKIE WATCH: Clippers forward Blake Griffin finished with 25 points and 17 rebounds, his club record 57th double-double of the season.

NOTABLE: Heading into their game Thursday night at Staples Center, the Mavericks are a half game behind the second-place Lakers in the Western Conference standings. Dirk Nowitzki missed a free throw in the second period, ending his streak at 74 consecutive successful attempts, the longest in the league this season.
