The Boston Celtics may be stumbling, but they're afforded the luxury of cruising into the playoffs with another Atlantic Division title.

The Indiana Pacers don't have any margin for error if they're going to join them in the postseason.

The Pacers attempt to create some breathing room in the tight race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference by snapping a five-game slide to the Celtics on Monday night.

Boston (50-21) has already clinched a fourth consecutive division title, so a 5-6 stretch heading into its final 10 games isn't overly concerning.

The Celtics are only playing for seeding. They are second in the conference, two games behind first-place Chicago and one-half game in front of Miami for third.

The Pacers (32-42) aren't as comfortable, entering this game with a tenuous hold on eighth. Indiana is just one game ahead of ninth-place Charlotte and two in front of Milwaukee for 10th.

Indiana has also played two more games than its pursuers, and its lead was put in further jeopardy following a 100-88 loss at Detroit on Saturday after falling 110-93 to Sacramento the previous night.

"We just gave away two games in the last two nights to two teams that wanted it more, and just let other teams right back in the hunt," forward Danny Granger said Saturday. "We have to step it up and if we don't we will be out of the playoffs."

Getting swept in the four-game season series with Boston wouldn't help the Pacers' postseason chances.

They've dropped 11 of 13 meetings with the Celtics, including five in a row while averaging 89.6 points on 40.2 percent shooting. Indiana made just 37.5 percent of its field goals in a 92-80 loss at Boston on March 16.

Granger has struggled greatly over the last four contests versus the Celtics, making 28.6 percent of his field goals while hitting 4 of 23 from beyond the arc to average 16.3 points.

He's entering this matchup in sluggish shooting form, making 9 of 27 shots to total 34 points over the last two games.

That may not improve with the Celtics playing stifling defense of late, yielding just 83.2 points over the last 10 games. However, they're also sputtering offensively in that span, scoring 85.9 points per contest.

Boston appeared to be comfortably on its way to a victory Sunday, but blew a 25-point, second-quarter lead before pulling out an 85-82 win over Western Conference-worst Minnesota to open this four-game road trip.

"You've got to work to win them all," said forward Kevin Garnett, who had 13 points and 13 rebounds against the Timberwolves.

It's unclear if Rajon Rondo, among the NBA's leaders with 11.4 assists per game, will play after sitting out Sunday's win with an injured right pinky finger. The All-Star point guard is averaging 9.6 points and 10.4 assists over his last seven meetings with Indiana, but has appeared in only one of three matchups this season due to injuries.

Hibbert leads Pacers past Celtics

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Indiana's Roy Hibbert had no mercy on Boston's depleted front line.

The 7-foot-2 center scored 26 points as the Pacers beat the Celtics 107-100 on Monday night and remained in sole possession of eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Boston had already traded away Kendrick Perkins, and Shaquille O'Neal, Jermaine O'Neal and Troy Murphy were out with injuries, leaving the Celtics thin in the post.

The last thing Boston's remaining posts needed was foul trouble, but they dealt with it for most of the game. Kevin Garnett finished with four fouls and only played 25 minutes, and Krstic finished with five fouls and played just 17 minutes. That left the 6-9 Davis to defend Hibbert for much of the night. Davis tried to use his 290-pound frame to make Hibbert uncomfortable, but Hibbert made 12 of 17 shots.

"I just came out aggressive and wanted to be a force down there offensively and defensively," Hibbert said.

It was the most points Hibbert has scored since tying a career high with 29 on Feb. 16. He had only scored more than 20 points once since.

"The kid works so hard, cares so much," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "He deserves all the success that he gets."

Boston coach Doc Rivers said the inability to defend down low turned the game.

"Kevin and Nenad were in foul trouble, and tonight, we need that extra big body," he said. "Tonight, the foul trouble just killed us. It crushed us today."

Danny Granger scored 18 points, and Darren Collison added 17 for the Pacers.

The Pacers entered a game ahead of Charlotte and two games ahead of Milwaukee for the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Charlotte beat Milwaukee on Monday, so the Pacers remained a game ahead of Charlotte and extended their lead over Milwaukee to three games.

Indiana remained unpredictable. The Pacers won at New Jersey and Charlotte and had seemingly built momentum before losing to Sacramento and Detroit, who are among the league's worst teams. Now, the Pacers have beaten Boston, which is fighting for the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

"One day, probably when I'm old and gray, I'll try to figure out what was wrong with us - why we can beat Boston, but lose to Sacramento and Detroit," he said. "I can't figure it out, but we definitely needed this. We're going to have to figure it out and some point."

Boston point guard Rajon Rondo started after missing Sunday's game against Minnesota with a jammed finger on his right hand. Rivers said before the game that Rondo would not play, but Rondo scored 10 points in the first 5:10 and finished with 22 points and eight assists.

Paul Pierce led Boston with 23 points, and Davis added 20 for the Celtics, who have lost seven of their last 12.

"We became a great team because we were known to do it for 48 minutes," Garnett said. "We seem to be missing that right now."

Monday's game was tied in the fourth quarter before the Pacers made a run. Collison scored on a short jumper in the lane, then Hibbert found a cutting Brandon Rush to give Indiana a 98-94 lead. Collison then stole the ball from Rondo near halfcourt, and the 6-foot point guard went up for an emphatic two-handed dunk to put the Pacers ahead 100-94. A putback by Hibbert pushed Indiana's lead to eight with 3:52 to play.

Boston hung close, but Collison made a fadeaway jumper with 1:16 left, then made a driving layup with 34.4 seconds remaining to give Indiana a 106-100 lead.

Collison scored eight points in the fourth quarter.

"He gave us a huge spark and really sealed the deal for us," Vogel said. "We knew we had to score some points on the break and that's what he did - getting those loose balls and a couple steals. You have to score in transition against that defense."

A 3-point play by Hibbert early in the second half pushed Indiana's lead to 67-57, but Boston responded with an 8-2 run. A jumper by Ray Allen cut Indiana's lead to 69-65 and caused the Pacers to call timeout. The Celtics made six of their first seven shots in the second half.

Allen hit a 3-pointer to put Boston up 72-71 with 5:04 left in the third quarter, and the Celtics extended their lead to 85-81 at the end of the period.

"Boston made a huge, third-quarter run, and we put them to the free-throw line too many times," Vogel said. "Once we decided to start defending without fouling, we were able to get enough stops to get the 'W."'

The Celtics shot 4 for 14 from the field and 6 for 12 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

"Our third quarter was really bad, and the fourth quarter, we clamped it down on them and made it tough for them to score," Granger said.

Indiana shot 12 for 18 from the field in the fourth quarter.

"In the most important part of the game, the fourth quarter, we couldn't get a stop right there," Pierce said. "It's a weird time to be talking about this, when there are nine games left in the season."

Notes: Hibbert scored 13 points in the first quarter on 6-for-7 shooting. ... Former Pacers O'Neal and Murphy were inactive for the Celtics. O'Neal was out with a sore left knee, while Murphy missed the game with a sprained right ankle. ... Indiana has shot at least 50 percent from the field in four of its past 10 games.

Celtics-Pacers notebook

THE FACTS: Roy Hibbert scored a game-high 26 points and Darren Collison produced eight of his 17 points down the stretch as the Pacers pulled away in the final six minutes to beat Boston 107-100 Monday in Conseco Fieldhouse. Indiana (33-42), which has beaten the Celtics, Bulls and Knicks in its last four home games, held Boston to 4-of-14 shooting in the final period and reduced its magic number for clinching the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference to seven. Boston (51-22) remained two games behind Chicago in the race for the top spot in the East. Paul Pierce led Boston with 23 points.

QUOTABLE: "We must continue to work with each other on defense and help each other out and try to shed this Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde image. We are working on it and everybody is giving it their best shot. We are still growing as a team and must continue to work to help each other out."

THE STAT: After failing to shoot better than .375 in their first three games with the Celtics, all double-digit losses, the Pacers hit 54.5 percent.

TURNING POINT: The game was tied 94-all midway through the fourth quarter when Collison stepped forward, hitting a jumper and then swiping the ball from Rajon Rondo at midcourt, racing in for a two-handed dunk that brought the crowd to its feet and pushed the Pacers to a 100-94 lead. Boston closed to 102-97 but Collison hit another jumper and then, after Pierce hit a 3-pointer, Collison drove past Rondo for a layup that iced it with 34.4 seconds left.

QUOTABLE II: "We became a great team because we were known to do it for 48 minutes. We seem to be missing that right now. Every team has their issues. All teams want to be playing well going into the playoffs. We've got a couple of days coming up to practice and try to get it right. It's frustrating. HOT: Hibbert shot 12-of-17, Collison was 8-of-9 and A.J. Price 6-of-9 for the Pacers. ... Indiana got 41 points and 19 rebounds from its bench, including 15 from Price. ... Rondo hit his first five shots and finished 9-of-13. ... Pierce hit 8-of-13 and Glen Davis 7-of-11.

NOT: Boston's frontcourt combination of Garnett and Nenad Kristic totaled 13 points, eight rebounds and nine fouls in 43 minutes.

NOTABLE: Indiana, which trailed by 10 in the first quarter, overcame a double-digit deficit to win for the third time in the last five games after doing so just twice in the first 70. ... The Pacers got some good news when Mike Dunleavy was back in uniform after an exam revealed his broken left thumb had healed. Dunleavy, who missed 19 games, did not play but is expected to play Wednesday against Detroit. ... Celtics coach Doc Rivers said in his pregame briefing that Rondo would miss a second game in a row with a jammed pinky finger on his right hand. But he changed that plan immediately before tip and started Rondo instead of Delonte West. ... Jermaine O'Neal, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in February, could be back at practice later this week but Rivers is taking a cautious approach to his possible game use.
