Pistons-Cavaliers Preview

Due in large part to their inability to stop anyone, the Detroit Pistons haven't won on the road since before the All-Star break.

Visiting a team that has trouble scoring - and the site of their last victory away from home - could help them solve those troubles.

The Pistons try to snap their seven-game road skid Friday night in Cleveland, where the punchless Cavaliers hope the return of Baron Davis gives them a much-needed offensive spark.

Detroit (25-46) won its last two road games prior to the break, including a 103-94 victory at Quicken Loans Arena on Feb. 9 as its bench chipped in 61 points.

Though the Cavaliers (13-57) shot 51.4 percent in that game, the Pistons were helped by 17 offensive rebounds, but they haven't been able to overcome their subpar defense since.

They've allowed 107.7 points in losing their last seven road games, and their past four opponents have averaged 112.5 while shooting 55.8 percent.

Detroit was looking good at both ends of the floor Wednesday against Miami at The Palace, but an 81-73 lead after three quarters quickly evaporated. The Heat scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter and wound up winning 100-94.

"It's always frustrating when you lose a game when you think you control the game, control the tempo of the game," said rookie Greg Monroe, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds. "You've got to control the game all the way to the fourth quarter and close the game out."

Cleveland looked reinvigorated offensively in Davis' first game after coming over from the Los Angeles Clippers, a 119-115 win at New York on March 4, but Davis has played in just three games since due to back spasms.

He's set to return Friday and could make his first start, which is certainly good news for the Cavaliers. They've averaged 85.6 points and shot 40.5 percent in losing eight of nine.

They couldn't take advantage of a prime opportunity for a win at home Wednesday against New Jersey. The Cavaliers shot 37.4 percent, going 2 of 12 from 3-point range, in a 98-94 overtime loss.

"Our guys really battled and did a real good job defensively, and that is something that we have been talking about - trying to establish that as our foundation," coach Byron Scott said. "Tonight was a big step towards that. Down the stretch, on the offensive end, we just have to do a much better job of executing."

While the Cavaliers will look for Davis to make a difference offensively, they'll need to do a better job defending Rodney Stuckey. Stuckey had 24 points and 11 assists while starting in a 102-92 home win over Cleveland on Dec. 5, then had 22 off the bench in last month's victory.

Richard Hamilton didn't play in that game, part of a six-week period he spent in coach John Kuester's doghouse, but he had 27 in the first meeting.

Since Hamilton's found himself back in the rotation, he's taken advantage. The veteran guard had 27 points against the Heat and has averaged 18.4 in his last five games.

Hickson, Davis lead Cavaliers past Pistons 97-91

CLEVELAND (AP) Baron Davis returned at the perfect time for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Playing for only the fifth time since being acquired last month, Davis scored 16 points and hit a clinching 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds remaining, leading the Cavaliers to a 97-91 win over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night.

Davis' shot came with Cleveland clinging to a 94-91 lead. With the shot clock winding down, he buried the 25-footer from the right wing that put the game away, giving Cleveland only its second win in 10 games.

Davis, who had missed the last three games because of back spasms, wanted the ball in his hands.

"That's the beauty of the game, the opportunity to take the pressure shot," he said. "I love those moments."

Cleveland coach Byron Scott has been looking for someone to take on that role all season.

"Some guys have the guts to take those shots," Scott said. "He definitely has them. Those are the guys willing to be the hero, but they're also willing to be the goat. That's what you have to be when you're out there."

Scott wants to work Davis into the starting lineup at some point, which could happen Sunday against Atlanta.

"It's always nice when you have a guy that is a closer," Scott said. "As soon as he took the ball over to the right side, I knew he was going to shoot. It's great when you have a guy with that type of ability and confidence."

Davis also had five assists in 24 minutes. He was acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers in a Feb. 24 trade. Prior to his back injury, Davis missed time with a sore left knee and following the death of his grandmother.

J.J. Hickson scored 24 points and had 15 rebounds for Cleveland, which also broke a seven-game home losing streak. Hickson was 9 of 13 from the field and made all six of his free throws.

Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton scored 15 points apiece for Detroit, which has lost three straight and six of eight.

Cleveland led most of the game, but fell behind 53-52 when Detroit scored first in the third quarter. Anthony Parker's jumper gave the Cavaliers the lead for good, but Cleveland couldn't pull away. Detroit cut the lead to 92-91 with 1:39 to play, but Daniel Gibson hit a jumper to give Cleveland a three-point lead. The score remained that way until Davis' big shot.

Dribbling on the right wing, Davis was expecting a double-team and was surprised when the Pistons switched their defense and forward Chris Wilcox came out to guard him.

"I was going to look for J.J., but I got (Wilcox) backing up a little bit," Davis said. "My legs were going on me a little, but I got a lot of arc on the ball."

"We couldn't get over the hump," Detroit coach John Kuester said. "We had a couple of chances at the end. Guys were fighting hard. We just have to keep finding guys that will continue to play hard the whole time."

Kuester thought the Cavs wanted to win the game more than the Pistons did.

"No question about it, they had more energy than us," he said. "They played harder than us."

Ryan Hollins and Luke Harangody scored 10 points apiece for the Cavaliers, who beat the Pistons for the first time in three games this season.

Austin Daye and Chris Wilcox had 12 points each for the Pistons. Rodney Stuckey and Greg Monroe each scored 11 points.

Notes: Detroit F Charlie Villanueva, who exchanged words with coach John Kuester after being removed from Wednesday's game, didn't play Friday. C Ben Wallace (left knee) missed his second straight game. ... Longtime Cavaliers radio play-by-play man Joe Tait, who has missed the entire season because of health reasons, will return to work Sunday. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame last summer.

THE FACTS: Lead guard Baron Davis scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-clinching 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds left, as the Cleveland Cavaliers held on for a 97-91 win over the Detroit Pistons. Davis calmly buried a 25-footer over Detroit center Chris Wilcox, allowing the Cavaliers to snap their seven-game home losing streak. He finished with 16 points and five assists off the bench.

THE STAT: Pistons small forward Tayshaun Prince and shooting guard Richard Hamilton, who combined for 30 points in the first three periods, were blanked in the fourth. Prince only played 4:16 in the final frame, while Hamilton logged exactly 10 seconds. "We just have to keep finding guys that are going to continue to play hard the whole time," Detroit coach John Kuester said.

TURNING POINT: With Cleveland clinging to a 92-91 lead with 1:24 on the clock, Daniel Gibson buried a perimeter jumper to restore its three-point advantage. Pistons guard Will Bynum took the next two shots, but missed a 3-pointer and a short try in the paint. The Cavaliers rebounded Bynum's second miss, setting the stage for Davis' clutch trey at the other end.

HOT: Cleveland power forward J.J. Hickson continued his late-season tear with game highs of 24 points and 15 rebounds. Hickson is averaging 16.6 points and 11.0 boards in his last 20 contests. "J.J. is in a good place right now, playing really well," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said. "I think he knows we have a lot of confidence in him, and it shows."

NOT: Detroit point guard Tracy McGrady had two points, three assists and two turnovers, while backup power forward Jason Maxiell was scoreless with four fouls and four turnovers in 16 minutes. "It was an unfortunate effort by all of us," Pistons power forward Austin Daye said. "I think we kind of took (the Cavaliers) for granted a little bit."

GOOD MOVE: Scott employed Davis and Gibson as his backcourt for the entire fourth quarter, which paid off big at crunch time. They scored 15 points in the period and displayed surprisingly good chemistry, given it was only Davis' fifth contest with the Cavaliers. "We had a real good vibe going," Gibson said, smiling. "B.D. is just a player and so am I, so I guess we knew what to do out there."

BAD MOVE: Bynum didn't step onto the court in the first three periods, but Kuester went to him to start the fourth. Bynum played the rest of the way, as did point guard Rodney Stuckey, Daye and Wilcox. Veteran power forward Charlie Villanueva, meanwhile, was a DNP-CD. "I communicated with (Charlie) where the rotation was going to be," Kuester said. "I liked what I saw with (Daye), so I stayed with him."

NOTABLE: The Cavaliers are 9-2 in their last 11 games against the Pistons, but had been 0-2 against them this season. ... Hamilton and Prince shared team-high honors with 15 points, while rookie power forward Greg Monroe and Wilcox paced Detroit with eight rebounds apiece. ... Hickson notched his 19th double-double of the campaign. ... Davis is shooting .536 beyond the arc in five games with Cleveland. ... Shooting guard Anthony Parker was solid across the board for the Cavaliers with five points, five rebounds, a game-high seven assists and zero turnovers. ... Cleveland is 1-2 on its current five-game homestand.
