Though he's no longer an All-Star caliber player and he's fairly new to the Dallas Mavericks, Peja Stojakovic returning could be a key factor in helping the team climb out of its funk.

The Mavericks try for an 18th win in 19 games over the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves, who will be missing Kevin Love as the teams close their season series Thursday night.

Of the 14 games in which Stojakovic has appeared for Dallas (49-21) following his release from Toronto, the Mavericks are 12-0 when he plays at least 15 minutes. They lost the other two games as he totaled two points and less than 23 minutes.

Stojakovic's debut with Dallas was delayed two weeks until Feb. 7 due to a knee injury which caused him to miss half the season, and he recently sat out another six games with neck stiffness.

Dallas went 2-4 during that span and shot just 30.9 percent from 3-point range in those four losses. Stojakovic, though, returned Sunday night to make a season-best five 3-pointers in eight attempts and scored 17 points in a 101-73 victory over Golden State.

"He really spreads the floor," said Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 20 points. "He was moving well, moving to his spots. He was aggressive and his shot was flowing. It was fun to watch."

Dallas has averaged 98.2 points this season without Stojakovic, compared to 108.6 when he plays.

Stojakovic, who made the last of his three All-Star appearances in 2004, ranks fourth all-time with 1,739 made 3-pointers - 43 behind teammate Jason Kidd.

"Obviously, Stojakovic coming back and getting it going was a big factor for us," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's been shooting the ball at that level for 20 years."

Shawn Marion was held out against Golden State with an injured right wrist and his status for this game is unknown.

The Mavs did fine without him Sunday, allowing less than 80 points for the first time all season, but Minnesota (17-54) might have a much tougher time without Love.

The league leader in rebounds (15.4 per game) and double-doubles (64) will miss a game for the first time this season due to a strained left groin. He also will sit out Friday's game in Oklahoma City.

Love, scoring a team-best 20.3 points per game, has averaged just 10.8 during Minnesota's four-game losing streak.

The Timberwolves have been outscored by 19.5 points during their skid while committing 20.3 turnovers per game, raising their league-leading average to 17.2.

"As part of being professionals, you have to learn how to play every game the same," forward Anthony Tolliver said. "Unfortunately we don't. A lot of guys on this team don't bring it every night. It's something that we all have to work on."

Minnesota has lost five straight on the road, surrendering an average of 107.8 points.

The Mavericks had lost three of four at home before winning Sunday, when they improved to 12-1 at the American Airlines Center when holding teams below 43.0 percent from the field.

Dallas has won both matchups this season and is looking to sweep the Timberwolves for the fourth time in five seasons. Minnesota's lone victory in the past 18 meetings came in Dallas on Feb. 5, 2010.

Nowitzki leads Mavs to 11th straight 50-win season

DALLAS (AP) With the game slipping away against one of the NBA's worst teams, the Dallas Mavericks turned to their reliable fourth-quarter duo of Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry.

Nowitzki had 30 points and 11 rebounds, Terry contributed 18 points, and the Mavericks rallied down the stretch for a 104-96 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night, giving Dallas 50 wins for the 11th straight season.

Nowitzki and Terry combined for 19 points in the final quarter, both going 4 for 7 from the field, to help the Mavs win for the third time in four games.

"Dirk said during a timeout, 'We can't lose this one,"' Terry said.

On just about every fourth-quarter possession, coach Rick Carlisle called for the pick-and-roll with Nowitzki and Terry. Dallas finished with an 11-2 run over the final 2:38.

"It's the key to our success late in games, it's no secret, if it's a close game late in the fourth quarter, Coach is going to ring up our numbers and we need to answer," Terry said. "We work extremely hard on (the pick-and-roll) in practice, and during these types of games our team needs us and that's what clutch players do by coming up big when the team needs them most."

Shawn Marion added 17 points, Peja Stojakovic had 16, and Tyson Chandler came up with nine points and 10 rebounds for Dallas.

Anthony Randolph had a career-high 31 points with 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who've lost their last five games and are without injured All-Star forward Kevin Love.

Randolph made his first start of the season in place of Love. Randolph, acquired from the Knicks in a three-team trade on Feb. 22, had a 23-point first half, 17 in the second quarter.

"We're missing a huge part of our team without Kevin being here," said Randolph. "I think if he was here, we definitely would have won the game."

Dallas was in front by as many as eight in the third quarter, but the Timberwolves came back to grab a 95-93 lead with 3:17 to play on Wayne Ellington's 22-footer.

Chandler's three-point play with 2:38 left put Dallas back in front for good, 96-95.

Jonny Flynn hit a layup with 1:17 remaining to pull Minnesota to 98-96, but Terry's 3-pointer with 55.6 seconds left gave Dallas some breathing room at 101-96.

"Give Minnesota credit, they really made us work, made some shots down the stretch and made us reach deep, but it was a good win and we'll move on," Nowitzki said.

Marion stole Flynn's pass on Minnesota's next possession, and Nowitzki hit two free throws with 43.5 seconds left for a 103-96 advantage to ice the victory.

"We're a veteran team that knows how to win," Carlisle said. "Persistence has to be our calling card."

Dallas fans have grown accustomed to 50-win seasons, which Carlisle credited to owner Mark Cuban.

"It's more about the commitment Mark has made, that there have been good players and Mark has surrounded Dirk with good players," Carlisle said.

Now the Mavericks need a better showing in the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the first round by San Antonio last season.

"It (50 wins) is nice, but I'd rather trade them in for a championship," said Nowitzki. "Fifty-win seasons don't mean nothing."

Stojakovic came off the bench to score seven points during a 13-4 second-quarter run, and the Mavs held a slender 49-47 edge at the break.

Before the game, Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis said there's a chance Love could miss the rest of the season with a strained left groin.

"There is an outside chance, I don't know how great that chance is," Rambis said. "Obviously, with hamstring or groin injuries, you want to be cautious with them because they can linger for a long period of time, and we don't want that to happen with Kevin."

Love, averaging 20.3 points and an NBA-best 15.4 rebounds per game, didn't travel with the team after sustaining the injury in Minnesota's previous game, a 127-95 home loss to Sacramento on Sunday.

Notes: Randolph's previous career high was 28 points against Orlando on Dec. 5, 2009. ... Marion started after missing the previous game with a sprained right wrist. ... THE FACTS: Dirk Nowitzki had 30 points and 11 rebounds Thursday as the Mavericks rallied for a 104-96 victory against the short-handed Timberwolves in Dallas. Making his first start of the season in place of injured leading scorer and league-leading rebounder Kevin Love, Dallas native Anthony Randolph performed the double-double duties for Minnesota with a career-high 31 points and 11 boards.

Jason Terry (18), Shawn Marion (17) and Peja Stojakovic (16) also scored in double digits for Dallas, which has won 18 of its last 19 meetings with Minnesota and swept the season series for the fourth time in five seasons. The Timberwolves dropped their fifth straight and fell to 5-31 on the road.

QUOTABLE: "There's an outside chance. I don't know how great that chance is."
-- Timberwolves head coach Kurt Rambis on the possibility that Love could miss the rest of the season with his injury (left groin strain).

THE STAT: The victory gave the Mavericks (50-21) their 11th consecutive 50-win season. The only longer streaks in NBA history belong to the Spurs (1999-2000 to 2010-11) and Lakers (1979-80 to 1990-91), both with 12 straight.

TURNING POINT: In a tight game with 10 ties, nine lead changes and no lead greater than eight points for either side, a timely three-point play by Tyson Chandler and a 3-point dagger by Terry gave Dallas the victory. Trailing 94-93, Chandler corralled the rebound of Terry's missed trey and was fouled while flushing the putback. He sank the free throw and the Mavs never trailed again. A few possessions later, Terry added the exclamation point as Dallas outscored Minnesota 11-2 over the final 2:38.

HOT: Randolph, who attended Woodrow Wilson High in Dallas, scored 23 of his 31 in the first half and finished 14-for-20 from the field. His previous career high was 28 points vs. Orlando on Dec. 5, 2009. This was his first start since Jan. 8, 2010 when he was with Golden State.

NOT: In a frigid first quarter, the Mavericks shot 32 percent (8-for-25) from the field and missed their first nine attempts from beyond the arc before Stojakovic finally sank a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left in the quarter. Minnesota led 23-17 after one period.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: The Mavericks improved to 13-0 this season when Stojakovic plays at least 15 minutes. He was 4-for-8 from long distance in 26 minutes, 29 seconds, while the rest of the team was a combined 4-for-19.

GOOD MOVE: Marion was in the starting lineup after missing Sunday's win against Golden State with a sprained right wrist. Head coach Rick Carlisle said he wanted "The Matrix" in there to defend Michael Beasley, who was held to 12 points on 4-for-11 shooting with five turnovers.

ROOKIE WATCH: Minnesota guard Wes Johnson made three 3-pointers and contributed 11 points and four rebounds.

NOTABLE: The Mavericks, owners of the NBA's best road record at 24-10 (.706), embark on a six-game, 10-day road trip and won't play again in Dallas until April 6 vs. Denver... A day after celebrating his 38th birthday, Dallas point guard Jason Kidd had 13 assists, six rebounds, three steals and zero points on 0-for-5 shooting... Nowitzki was 5-for-5 at the line to extend his streak to 63 consecutive free throws made, the longest in the NBA this season...Randolph was the only member of Minnesota's starting lineup to see any action in the fourth quarter as Rambis let reserves Jonny Flynn, Wayne Ellington, Anthony Tolliver and Martell Webster each play all 12 minutes.
