While the Memphis Grizzlies are battling for one of the final playoff spots in the Western Conference, their next two games will have major implications in the East.

The Grizzlies begin a two-game trip against one of the East's best Wednesday night when they take on the Boston Celtics.

Memphis (39-32) is in eighth place in the West as it starts a road trip in which it will probably be happy to win one game. The Grizzlies visit Chicago on Friday, and the Bulls and Celtics (50-19) are in a tight race for the No. 1 seed in the East.

"We can't lower our heads and say: 'We've got to play two of the best teams coming up on the road,' and be down about it," guard Mike Conley said. "We've got to take the challenge and take it head on."

Boston will be seeking its third season sweep of Memphis in the last four seasons. The Celtics won 116-110 in overtime Nov. 13 behind Paul Pierce's 28 points and Rajon Rondo's 17 assists.

Memphis was led by Rudy Gay's 22 points. The club announced Tuesday that Gay will miss the rest of the season since surgery has been recommended for an injured left shoulder that has kept him out of action since Feb. 22.

The Grizzlies are 8-6 in Gay's absence, winning their second straight 103-85 over Utah on Monday. Zach Randolph had 19 points and 13 boards while Conley had 11 points and 11 assists.

"Each game is a playoff game for us," Randolph said. "We're trying to get there. We're in the last spot. We're trying to hold onto it or move up. So it's important every game to come out and be focused."

Memphis is trying to rely on a more balanced attack without Gay's 19.8 points per game. The Grizzlies placed seven players in double figures Monday.

"The biggest thing I think is that we're having a lot of fun," Conley said. "This whole ordeal has been great for us. Being so close, almost sniffing at a playoff berth, knowing that each game is basically a playoff game for us because it means so much."

The Celtics are 21-0 at home against Eastern foes, compared to 8-6 against the West at TD Garden. Memphis won 111-91 in last season's visit to Boston.

Kevin Garnett had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Pierce scored 21 as Boston capped a 2-1 road trip with Monday's 96-86 win over New York. The Celtics scored the final 10 points.

The physical game saw Troy Murphy exit with a bloody nose and Ray Allen leave briefly in the third quarter after his head was bloodied by an elbow by Jared Jeffries while going for a rebound. Murphy did not return, but Allen did.

"We've been in every game that you can imagine, big games, so you know we don't really get rattled," Pierce said. "We know how to respond when the games get testy and physical and sometimes we keep our poise, sometimes we don't, but tonight we did."

Grizzlies starting guard Tony Allen will make his first visit to Boston since signing a multiyear deal with Memphis in the offseason. Allen was a 2004 first-round pick by the Celtics, and spent his first six seasons with the club.

Grizzlies hold off Celtics for 90-87 win in Boston

BOSTON (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies are still in the playoff chase, and they're doing it with a couple of guys who know a little bit about the postseason.

Leon Powe and Tony Allen, members of the Celtics' 2008 championship team, returned to Boston on Wednesday night to help the Memphis Grizzlies win 90-87 and solidify their hold on the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference.

"When you can come on the road and beat a great team like that, and do it on the defensive end, it's huge for a young, up-and-coming team," said Powe, who scored 13 points. "That just adds to our confidence."

Marc Gasol scored 11 points with 11 rebounds and Zach Randolph had 13 and eight for Memphis, which improved to one-half game behind seventh-place New Orleans in the West. The Grizzlies remained two games ahead of ninth-place Houston, which beat Golden State later Wednesday.

Powe, who spent the first three years of his career in Boston, saw little action in Cleveland before the Cavaliers released him to sign with Memphis on March 5. He came off the bench to score 13 points in 17 minutes - his best game since signing with the Grizzlies.

"Leon Powe was the baddest man on the planet tonight," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "It's not like they tricked us. They just drove through somebody and scored."

Allen spent the first six years of his career in Boston before signing with Memphis as a free agent last summer. He scored nine with five assists.

"They're both really tough, physical guys. They're veteran guys who have been to the mountaintop and won," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "This is our second year in a row coming in here and getting a win, so this is special. But I'm sure for those guys this is extra special."

Paul Pierce scored 22 for Boston, but he missed an off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer that could have sent the game into overtime and the Celtics lost for the fifth time in nine games and fell one game behind Chicago (51-19) in the race for the best record in the Eastern Conference. Rajon Rondo had six points, seven steals, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, but he missed an ill-advised one-handed floater in the lane with 18 seconds left and Boston trailing 88-87.

"It's so easy to second-guess it now," said Rivers, who didn't call a timeout because he thought Rondo was going to pass it to Pierce. "I just think your best offensive player should always touch the ball on the last possession."

Memphis led 84-77 in the fourth quarter before Boston cut the deficit to one point, 86-85, with just over 3 minutes left on Pierce's 3-pointer. Gasol made it a three-point game before Glen "Big Baby" Davis made a jumper with 52 seconds left to cut the lead to one point.

Davis had a chance to put Boston ahead, but Gasol blocked it, and then Gasol stole a pass from Ray Allen with 80 seconds left before converting a layup to make it 88-85. Davis' jumper made it a one-point game again, then Rondo rebounded a Memphis miss and brought the ball the length of the court before floating up a one-handed shot that bounced off the back of the rim.

The Celtics sent Mike Conley to the line with 14 seconds left, and he made both free throws. Davis' 3-point attempt to tie it missed, but after Gasol was fouled he missed both free throws with 4.6 seconds left, giving Boston the ball and a chance to send the game into overtime.

Boston inbounded the ball to Pierce but he couldn't get off a clear shot.

"He is one of those prolific-type dudes," Tony Allen said. "He's hit shots like that in his career. He missed and we got the win."

After falling behind 36-26 in the second quarter, the Celtics scored eight straight points - including back-to-back 3-pointers from Allen- to make it a two-point game. It was 38-34 when Boston again scored eight in a row to take the lead before Memphis scored twice in the final minute to make it 45-44 at the half.

Notes: Powe and Tony Allen received a warm welcome from the crowd at introductions. ... Ray Allen wore a bandage above his right eye. He received seven stitches after being elbowed by Jared Jeffries in Monday night's game against the New York Knicks. Allen and Pierce are the only Celtics to play in all 70 games this season. ... The Grizzlies said on Tuesday that No. 2 scorer Rudy Gay would miss the rest of the season to have surgery on his partially dislocated left shoulder.

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies had six players in double figures as they escaped the TD Garden with a 90-87 win over the Boston Celtics for their third straight victory. New addition Leon Powe provided a major spark for the Grizz with a team-high 13 points against his former teammates while coming off the bench. Marc Gasol also chipped in with a double-double, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds. Paul Pierce led all scorers with 22 points in the setback as Boston struggled to muster just two points against stifling Memphis defense in the game's final three minutes.

QUOTABLE: "I told our guys we need to win these games to graduate to the big leagues. Tonight was big for our confidence, as a young team to win a game like this against a championship contender."

THE STAT: The C's offensive struggles out of the gate continued against Memphis, as they posted just 15 points in the first quarter. Over the past nine games, Boston has averaged just 18.8 points in the opening frame, nearly six points below their season average.

TURNING POINT: Rajon Rondo grabbed a rebound with 26 seconds remaining and Boston trailing 88-87, as the Celtics had the numbers advantage on the fast break. Instead of finding Pierce, the team's offensive star on the night, Rondo took an ill-advised floater in the lane which missed badly. Shane Battier grabbed the rebound and Memphis held serve the rest of the way.

HOT: Powe -- The midseason acquisition had his best game yet in a Memphis uniform, and gave his team a huge lift in the second quarter with nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from both the field and free-throw line. Powe hit 5-of-6 shots overall in a mere 17 minutes of action.

NOT: Mike Conley -- The Memphis floor general struggled mightily on the offensive end, hitting just 1-of-9 shots. Conley also had a game-high five turnovers as he was hounded by Rondo's tight defense all night.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Despite a cold night shooting the ball, Rondo made his presence felt in other areas of the game. The All-Star had his second straight double-double with 11 rebounds and 11 assists, as well as a season-high seven steals. The consecutive strong box score lines are indicative of the guard breaking out of his recent slump.

ROOKIE WATCH: Grevis Vazquez performed well in spot duty for Memphis, posting four points and two rebounds.

BAD MOVE: With 8 seconds remaining in the game, the Celtics trailed 90-87 and looked for a chance to tie. With Memphis blanketing both Pierce and Ray Allen on the perimeter, Rondo passed the ball to Glen Davis, who forced up a 3-pointer which landed well wide of the basket. Davis had hit just 1-of-11 attempts from downtown on the season before that ill-advised attempt.

NOTABLE: The Celtics finished the season with a 8-7 mark at home against Western Conference opponents, as all of their losses at the TD Garden have come against their rival conference. Memphis doubled Boston's point output in the paint by a 52-26 margin as Boston's front line was shorthanded without Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal in the lineup. Tony Allen delivered an inspired outing in his return to Beantown with eight points, seven rebounds and a crucial breakaway steal and dunk in the fourth quarter. Allen had played the first five years of his career in Boston before signing with Memphis in the offseason. The Celtics shot 22-of-23 from the free-throw line. Memphis grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and had 16 second-chance points, compared to just three points for Boston.
