The Boston Celtics are returning to the playoffs as Atlantic Division champions for a fourth consecutive season. The New York Knicks are aiming to just end a six-season postseason drought.

Their recent play is delaying that process.

The Knicks attempt to begin pulling out of their funk as they face the Celtics at Madison Square Garden on Monday night in the opener of a difficult three-game homestand.

Boston (49-19) has already clinched its 20th Atlantic title in franchise history, four more than the other four division members combined.

The Celtics are also tied with Chicago atop the Eastern Conference, two games ahead of Southeast-leading Miami heading into the final 14 games of the regular season.

New York (35-34) has 13 games left, and it appears to be on its way to reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2004. The team is seventh in the conference, one-half game behind sixth-place Philadelphia and seven ahead of Milwaukee in ninth.

The Knicks failed to create more separation from the Bucks on Sunday, losing 100-95 at Milwaukee while hitting just 38.6 percent of their shots. They've dropped five of seven and are 7-8 since acquiring Carmelo Anthony from Denver last month.

"They're frustrated, and that's good," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We're trying to get this done. We'll get it done. It's just a matter of staying calm and knowing our problems and working through them."

One of the problems has been poor defensive play, and New York has show some improvement over the last three games. The Knicks have allowed an average of 99.3 points after giving up 117.3 over the previous three.

While the defensive issues appear to be waning, Anthony could provide a spark offensively after scoring 23 points Sunday. He was held to six points while making just 2 of 12 shots in a 99-95 loss at Detroit two nights prior.

The forward had 32 points for the Nuggets in a 113-99 loss at Boston on March 24 of last year.

The Knicks are in for a series of rough tests during this homestand, also hosting Orlando and Milwaukee. They've dropped 14 of 16 meetings with the Celtics, and nine of 11 at MSG.

New York's latest home defeat in the series came in heartbreaking fashion, as Paul Pierce hit a jumper with 0.4 seconds left while Amar'e Stoudemire's 3-pointer came just after the final buzzer as Boston won 118-116 on Dec. 15.

Boston may have dropped four of seven, but the team is allowing an average of just 81.8 points over the past six..

The Celtics are looking for another strong defensive effort in order to build on Saturday's 89-85 win at New Orleans after opening this three-game road trip with a 93-77 loss to Houston the previous night.

"The energy level changed," said forward-center Glen Davis, who had 20 points and eight rebounds against the Hornets. "We started doing the things we know how to do best. We changed the tempo of the game and we made them uncomfortable in the things they had been doing."

Pierce has made just 3 of 19 shots - 1 of 10 from 3-point range - to total 19 points over the last two games. The swingman is averaging 27.0 points over the last five visits to the Garden after getting 32 in December.

Celtics rally for spirited victory over Knicks

NEW YORK (AP) Even as blood flowed and bodies flew, the biggest wound inflicted on the Boston Celtics came from their coach.

Doc Rivers used a word at halftime the Celtics don't usually hear.

"Doc thought we were soft," Kevin Garnett said. "He thought our play was soft, he thought everything we were doing was soft and we weren't the Cs. So we got firm."

And in the process, they showed the New York Knicks they'll have to get a whole lot tougher if this was in fact a playoff preview.

Garnett had 24 points and 11 rebounds, Rajon Rondo added 13 points and 12 assists, and the Celtics scored the final 10 points for a spirited 96-86 victory on Monday night.

The Celtics were bloodied, but it takes much more for them to be beaten.

"We've been in every game that you can imagine, big games, so you know we don't really get rattled," forward Paul Pierce said. "We know how to respond when the games get testy and physical and sometimes we keep our poise, sometimes we don't, but tonight we did."

Pierce scored 21 points and Ray Allen had 15 for Boston despite a poor shooting night and a nasty cut on his head that briefly forced him from the game.

Carmelo Anthony scored 22 points for the Knicks, but neither he nor Amare Stoudemire had a field goal in the fourth quarter. Chauncey Billups had 21 and Stoudemire finished with 16.

"We just got to a point there, I thought we just panicked," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We've got a lot of work to do."

Boston (50-19) matched its victory total from last season and remained tied with Chicago for the best record in the Eastern Conference, seizing control in the final minutes with its trademark tough defense the sensational all-court play of Rondo, who made the tiebreaking basket with 3:10 left.

"We like to say that we're always going to battles with different teams," said Allen, who needed seven stitches. "It's the game that we're used to playing and we get out there, we've just got to make sure that we bring that fight."

The Knicks lost for the sixth time in seven games and fell to 7-9 since acquiring Anthony last month. And, as with Miami's occasional struggles this season, New York has concerns about how long it takes a team to figure things out when it has put superstars together.

"Hopefully two, three years," Rivers joked before the game, and he has his reasons for that wish.

The longtime Atlantic Division rivals could be headed toward a meeting in the first round of the playoffs. New York is in seventh place in the East, a game behind Philadelphia.

This one started to resemble a playoff scrap in the second quarter. Boston's Troy Murphy had to come out of the game with a bloody nose, and Glen Davis crashed to the court after Anthony caught him in the head with an elbow after grabbing a rebound.

Then, Allen had to leave briefly in the third quarter after his head was bloodied by Jared Jeffries' elbow while going for a rebound. Allen wiped blood from his head on the court with a towel, not far from where his mother was seated next to Spike Lee in the front row of courtside seats.

"This felt like a playoff game tonight," Garnett said. "Felt like we were in a bar fight."

The Celtics took the hits and kept coming, trimming New York's lead to 69-63 on Davis' layup at the third-quarter buzzer. They were down nine after Billups' four-point play with 7:26 remaining but stormed back with 13 straight points, going ahead 86-82 on Garnett's jumper with 4:20 to go.

The Knicks tied it, and after Rondo's layup with 3:10 put Boston back ahead, Anthony was cut above the eye after colliding with Rondo trying to steal and inbounds pass. Rondo came up with it as Anthony fell to the court, then found Davis for a layup and a 90-86 edge with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Pierce knocked down a jumper for a six-point lead, and Allen put it away with a dunk to make it 94-86 with 40 seconds to go. He closed it out with two free throws.

"We know that the Celtics are a team that plays very physical, that gives their body up for each other," center Ronny Turiaf said. "So you know you have to match up their intensity."

A day after the Knicks managed nine points in the first quarter at Milwaukee, their worst opening period since scoring a franchise-low five on Nov. 21, 1956, against Fort Wayne, Stoudemire had nine by himself after 12 minutes Monday as New York built a 25-22 lead.

The Knicks scored the first seven of the second, capped by consecutive baskets by Turiaf, to open a double-digit cushion. It grew to 45-30 on Billups' 3-pointer with 3:41 remaining in the half, and the Knicks took a 51-37 advantage to the locker room.

Notes: The teams meet again in Boston on April 13 in the regular-season finale. ... Shaquille O'Neal worked out on a stationary bike before the game, though it's still unknown when he will return from a sore right leg that's sidelined him since Feb. 1. ... The Knicks started Turiaf at center, the third straight game they had a different starter at that position.

Celtics-Knicks notebook

THE FACTS: In a game in which Carmelo Anthony took five stitches above the left eye, the Knicks blew a 15-point second-half lead and the Celtics closed the game on a 23-4 run to win, 96-86, at Madison Square Garden. New York has lost three straight and six of seven, and fell to 7-9 since the Anthony trade.

QUOTABLE: "That fourth quarter we missed some shots that we was making in the first half and we didn't make in the second half. It wasn't one thing that I can point out."

THE STAT: The Celtics outscored the Knicks, 33-17, in the fourth quarter. In their last three games, the Knicks have scored 17, 23 and 17 points in the fourth.

TURNING POINT: The Celtics used a 13-0 run to turn an 82-73 fourth-quarter deficit into an 86-82 lead. Paul Pierce scored the first seven points of the run, hitting two foul shots, a 3-pointer and a pull-up jumper.

QUOTABLE II: "In the second half we played like the Celtics. We defended and we shared the ball."

HOT: Kevin Garnett shot 10 of 15 from the field and scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half. He also grabbed 11 rebounds.

NOT: Jared Jeffries managed just 1 point and four rebounds in 16-plus minutes. Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni elected to start Ronny Turiaf at center after a failed one-game experiment with Shelden Williams. Jeffries started the game before that.

NOTABLE: With about two and a half minutes remaining in the game, Anthony collided in the air with Rajon Rondo as they went for a 50-50 ball on an in-bounds pass. Anthony fell to the floor and lay face down. He was hit again as Rondo ran up the court after a layup by Glen Davis that made it 90-86. Anthony stayed in for one possession but did not return.

QUOTABLE III: "I thought I was cool until I got in there and I guess it started seeping into my eye or whatever. I couldn't open my eye after that."

Asked if a foul should have been called, Anthony added: "The way they was calling, it ain't no telling, so I don't know. I can't really answer that."
