The San Antonio Spurs bounced back from their most lopsided loss of the season with one of their most impressive wins. Less than 24 hours later, they'll have to guard against a letdown.

The Spurs have lost just once at home since December and twice in their history against the Charlotte Bobcats, dominant stints they'll look to continue Saturday night at the AT&T Center.

San Antonio (55-13) has a record that's six games ahead of their next-closest pursuer, but the past two weeks have raised major questions regarding its claim as the NBA's best team. The Spurs trailed by as many as 32 in a 99-83 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on March 6 - their first at home since Nov. 26 - and were embarrassed 110-80 on Monday in Miami.

That left plenty of time for coach Gregg Popovich to fire up his team prior to Friday's visit to Dallas, and San Antonio played like an inspired group. Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan combined for 80 points and the Spurs won 97-91, taking a big step toward clinching the Southwest Division by pulling 7 1/2 games ahead of the Mavericks.

"When you have Pop in your ear for three days, it can be a long three days," said Parker, who had 33 points. "In the film sessions we talked about not playing physical, not playing with intensity or playing good defense. Tonight we wanted to make sure we stayed in front of people and made sure their shots were hard."

Now, San Antonio returns home, where it's 13-0 against Eastern opponents.

The Bobcats (28-40), meanwhile, have been woeful lately in interconference road contests. They lost 94-78 at Houston on Wednesday and weren't much more competitive Friday in Oklahoma City, falling 99-82.

Coach Paul Silas' team has averaged just 79.9 points while losing seven straight road games to Western foes by an average of 17.8 points. Seven losses in nine games overall, meanwhile, have left the Bobcats 1 1/2 games behind Indiana for the East's eighth and final playoff spot.

"It's tough because losing is always tough," Silas said. "We just have to pick it up and all I ask is that we play hard and play tough and I thought we did that for a certain point and then really fell off, which makes it difficult to really assess where we are now."

Charlotte has averaged 83.3 points in 13 games against San Antonio since entering the league, and its only road win in the series came 95-92 in overtime on Nov. 15, 2006.

Ginobili had 26 points to lead the Spurs to a 95-91 win on Nov. 8 in Charlotte.

Slowing down the Argentinian All-Star seems to be the best way to have a chance against San Antonio. The Spurs are 33-3 when Ginobili scores at least 18.

The Bobcats, meanwhile, are desperate for offense as they've averaged 84.2 points over their past 10 games.

Former Spur Stephen Jackson missed three of those contests with a strained left hamstring, but he's had a tough month when he's been on the court. Jackson has averaged 13.8 points and shot 30.8 percent in six games since March 2.

Charlotte is 15-11 when Jackson scores 21 points or more, and 13-29 otherwise.

Duncan misses first game as Spurs roll by Bobcats

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Announcing that Tim Duncan would miss his first game all season, the San Antonio Spurs listed him on a pregame injury report as "trop vieux" - French for "too old."

The NBA's winningest team can afford a sense of humor.

Steve Novak scored 19 points and the Spurs managed fine without Duncan against the skidding Charlotte Bobcats, riding their reserves to a 109-98 victory Saturday night.

The Spurs let the 34-year-old Duncan rest a night after they really needed him in a win at Dallas. Tony Parker had nine points - after the Frenchman volunteered the wording for Duncan's night off.

"An excuse. I don't know why he's not playing," Parker joked.

The reason is the NBA-best Spurs trying to save their aging All-Star forward for the playoffs. Also looking toward the postseason is the Bobcats, even after losing their third straight and dropping to 28-41.

Gerald Henderson scored 19 points in Charlotte's ninth loss in 11 games. But the Bobcats remain just 1 1/2 games behind Indiana for the No. 8 playoff seed in the East and play the Pacers at home Wednesday.

By then, Charlotte expects to get leading scorer Stephen Jackson back. Jackson didn't play against the Spurs because of a strained hamstring. And despite the loss, the Bobcats caught a break since the Pacers also lost Saturday.

"It's been like that for quite a while," Bobcats forward Boris Diaw said. "In a run for the playoffs, every game is going to be important. To get a 'W' is important, so it's frustrating."

Bobcats coach Paul Silas said that unlike the Spurs and Duncan, Charlotte sorely needed Jackson and his 18.9 points per game.

Duncan was the only Spurs player to start the team's first 68 games, having stayed healthy unlike recent years. Even though his role has greatly diminished and his averages are at career lows, Duncan remains a big reason why the Spurs (56-13) are on pace to surpass their franchise record of 63 wins set in 2005-06.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said the time has come to start thinking down the line. He didn't want to overextend Duncan on consecutive nights after scoring 22 points in 32 minutes against the Mavericks on Friday.

"It's late in the year and back-to-backs are probably not the best idea for some of our payers at this point," Popovich said.

Rookie Tiago Splitter got his first NBA start in place of Duncan. The milestone started badly for the Brazilian, airballing his first free throw and driving his second one into the backboard. He settled down and finished with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.

Manu Ginobili and Parker practically had the night off with Duncan. Ginobili had 11 points in 19 minutes.

Ginobili doesn't foresee having many other games to rest, even if the Spurs wrap up the West's top seed.

"We might see one game or two," Ginobili said. "We got to keep in shape and keep playing. Because when you realize the playoffs are here you don't want to lose your conditioning."

A night after the Big Three scored 80 in the 97-91 win over Dallas, San Antonio's reserves picked up the slack this time. Gary Neal scored 15 and George Hill had 12.

The Spurs tied a season high for made 3-pointers, going 17 for 34 from long range. Charlotte attempted only six and made two.

The Bobcats struggled to find offense early without Jackson. They shot just 29 percent in the first quarter and trailed by as much as 26. That deficit haunted the Bobcats in the fourth when they still couldn't get close despite a 12-2 run.

Diaw scored 16 points and D.J. White had 13 for the Bobcats.

"Tim Duncan didn't play tonight, but they really didn't need him," Silas said. "But (Jackson), we do."

NOTES: Silas said Jackson tweaked his hamstring the previous night in a loss at Oklahoma City. ... Spurs F DeJuan Blair sprained his left wrist in the first half but returned after getting it taped up.

THE FACTS: Five Spurs scored in double figures on Saturday night, but Manu Ginobili (11 points) was the only starter to do it. With Tim Duncan getting a rest, the Spurs counted on four bench players to hit double-figure scoring and San Antonio posted a 109-98 victory over the skidding Charlotte Bobcats at AT&T Center. Deep-bench reserve Steve Novak led the Spurs (56-13) with 19 points off five 3-pointers. The Bobcats (28-41) counted on Gerald Henderson's 19 points after Stephen Jackson did not play because of a hamstring injury.

QUOTABLE: "I think I know my role on this team is to spread the floor for guys like Timmy (Duncan) and let Tony (Parker) get in the middle, break guys down, and kick it out. I think that's what the Spurs have done long before I was here."

THE STAT: The Spurs, tops in the league in 3-point shooting, were 17-for-34 from beyond the arc, compared to 2-for-6 for Charlotte.

TURNING POINT: It could have been when Bobcats coach Paul Silas announced Jackson was not playing because of a bothersome hamstring, opting to rest Jackson for a crucial game against Indiana on Wednesday (the Bobcats remain 1.5 games behind the East's eighth-seed after the Pacers lost tonight at Memphis). Certainly when the Spurs jumped out to a 24-13 lead after the first quarter, the Bobcats were working uphill all night without their best scorer.

QUOTABLE II: "It all comes with how they share the ball. No one really holds it. They all seem like they make the right pass every time. They're just so unselfish."

HOT: Novak missed his career high (23 points while playing for the Clippers in 2009). But he went 5-for-8 from 3-point range, and his 19 points (he played almost 18 minutes) beat his season high by 10 points. The Spurs signed him to a pair of 10-day contracts in February before committing to him for the rest of the season earlier this month.

NOT: As well as the Spurs shot from the 3-point line, it's surprising that little of it came from their best shooter. Matt Bonner had been shooting better than 50 percent almost all season, but his 2-for-7 performance tonight dropped him to .497 on the season (89-of-179).

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: On a night where there were no real standouts, there is at least a warning from here to the end of the regular-season: Be careful with having Duncan in any games involved in back-to-back scheduling. Duncan did not play tonight, the night after he played in a road win against Dallas. There are four more back-to-backs left on the Spurs schedule: March 27-28, March 31-April 1, April 5-6 and April 12-13.

INSIDE THE ARENA: It was "military appreciation night" in San Antonio, and a general sang the national anthem.

GOOD MOVE: Giving Duncan a rest. The Spurs joked on the sheet listing their inactives for the night that the reason on Duncan was trop vieux (French for "too old"). Never hurts to give the 13-year veteran, nearing his 35th birthday, a rest against a team with a losing record on the second night of a back-to-back.

BAD MOVE: Not getting more rest to Parker. He played 39 minutes last night at Dallas and nearly played his usual 32 minutes tonight.

ROOKIE WATCH: Tiago Splitter, who played the past two season in Europe after the Spurs drafted him in the first round in 2007, got his first NBA start with Duncan on the bench. He played almost 24 minutes and hit 4-for-6 shots (0-for-3 free throws) with six rebounds, four fouls and eight points. Gary Neal, an undrafted rookie who also spent the past two seasons in Europe, kept a hot hand off the San Antonio bench with 5-for-7 shooting and 15 points in 24 minutes.

NOTABLE: Duncan needs four more rebounds to pass Dennis Rodman (a former Spurs player) for 21st place on the career rebounding list with 11,954. ... The 13-point first quarter for Charlotte was the team's lowest-scoring opening quarter of the season. ... DeJuan Blair sprained his left (non-shooting) wrist in the first quarter for the Spurs but returned with a bandage wrap around it in the second quarter. He had six rebounds in 19 and 1/2 minutes. ... Charlotte has lost nine of 11, and the Bobcats last four defeats have come in double-digit deficits.
