In a game in which they were thoroughly outplayed, the Boston Celtics missed out on a chance to jump back atop the Eastern Conference.

With the way the Celtics have played away from TD Garden lately, home-court advantage is looking increasingly more significant.

Boston tries to avoid its first four-game road skid in more than two years Saturday night in New Orleans, where the Hornets hope to conclude a five-game homestand with a fourth victory.

Chicago lost 115-108 in overtime Friday night at Indiana, giving the Celtics (48-19) an opportunity to jump one-half game in front of the Bulls and back into the top spot in the East they've held for most of the season.

However, Boston hasn't looked like a team intent on locking up home-court advantage too often lately. In three road contests over the past eight days, the Celtics have shot 41.7 percent - 19.4 percent from 3-point range - while dropping all three including Friday's embarrassing 93-77 defeat at Houston.

Coach Doc Rivers didn't play his starters in the fourth quarter as Boston trailed by 25 after three.

"I just thought, 'Let's just throw this one away,"' Rivers said. "This is one of those games where they did everything better. You just go on to the next game."

Home-court advantage in the first round is likely out the window for New Orleans (40-30), but finishing as high as fifth in the West - which would allow it to avoid the Spurs, Lakers and Mavericks in the first round - is a distinct possibility.

The Hornets are currently percentage points behind Portland for sixth place, and 1 1/2 games behind fifth-place Denver. Most importantly, Chris Paul doesn't seem to be showing any lingering effects from his recent concussion. The points guard has averaged 28.7 points, 11.3 assists and five steals in three games since his return, and scored a game-high 26 in Wednesday's 100-95 victory over Phoenix.

"I just try to be aggressive," Paul said. "I've learned, watching all the games, that if I'm aggressive early, it makes the defense collapse on me and it makes my teammates open even more."

Paul had a similarly balanced game Dec. 31 at Boston. He had 20 points, 11 assists, six steals and five boards as New Orleans edged a Celtics team missing Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo 83-81.

The Hornets won't have the luxury of avoiding Garnett or Rondo this time around, but Paul is at least catching Rondo in the midst of a horrendous slump. The two-time All-Star has totaled eight points in his last four games while shooting 4 for 29 (13.8 percent) from the field.

Rondo's struggles have affected the rest of the Celtics' cast of All-Stars as well. Ray Allen has scored in single digits in two of his last three road games, while Paul Pierce has averaged 9.3 points in his last three away from home.

There's another reason besides Rondo's problems that another low-scoring game could be on tap Saturday. David West had 19 points and made 8 of 17 shots in the win at Boston in December, but he's averaged 15.8 points and shot 31.7 percent in his last four games against Garnett.

Allen helps Boston rally past New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) The Boston Celtics were coming off a listless loss at Houston and were playing just as poorly against New Orleans. Then they went back to what got them to the top of the Eastern Conference - stifling defense and terrific shooting.

Ray Allen scored 20 points, including the clinching free throws with 2.8 seconds left, and the Celtics rallied to beat the New Orleans Hornets 89-85 on Saturday night.

Allen also had a key offensive rebound that led to Glen Davis' two foul shots that made it 87-83 with 15.2 seconds remaining. Davis, a Baton Rouge, La., native who played at nearby LSU, also had 20 points.

The Celtics trailed 56-41 early in the third quarter but closed the period with a 23-6 run to go ahead 67-64 and never trailed again.

Boston, the NBA leader in field-goal percentage, shot 12 of 16 (75 percent) in the third quarter. The Celtics, who also lead the NBA in scoring defense, held the Hornets to 34 points in the second half and 6-of-21 shooting (28.6 percent) in the third quarter.

"The energy level changed," Davis said. "We started doing the things we know how to do best. We changed the tempo of the game and we made them uncomfortable in the things they had been doing."

The Celtics snapped a three-game road losing streak and moved back into a tie with idle Chicago for the best record in the conference.

"We played so poorly last night and we really just started the game the same way today," coach Doc Rivers said. "It meant a lot to the guys to come back. They wanted this win."

David West led New Orleans with 32 points. Marco Belinelli added a season-high 23 points, but Chris Paul went without a basket for only the fourth time in his career, finishing 0 of 9 from the floor.

"It's going to be hard for us to win if I play like that," said Paul, who did have 15 assists. "I've got to do better. We lose by four points, and I play like that."

Paul barely grazed the rim on a runner in the lane that would have tied it at 83 late in the game, and Emeka Okafor was tied up for a jump ball as he went for the putback. The Hornets controlled the tip, but Belinelli was stripped as he drove to the basket.

Kevin Garnett scored to give the Celtics an 85-81 lead with 57.4 seconds remaining. West followed with a driving bank shot, but the Hornets couldn't get any closer.

Allen grabbed a rebound off a miss from Davis seconds later. After Paul Pierce called a timeout to avoid a turnover while being trapped near midcourt, Davis was fouled and hit both free throws.

Okafor scored on a putback, but the Hornets could not prevent Allen, one of the best foul shooters in NBA history, from getting the inbounds pass.

Boston's reserves came up huge in the tight game. Davis, Jeff Green and Delonte West combined for 39 points on 17-of-23 shooting.

Garnett had 12 points and nine rebounds. Pierce went 1 for 9 from the floor, finishing with nine points and six assists.

The Celtics' huge spurt in the third quarter started when Allen took an inbounds pass with 2 seconds left on the shot clock and drained a 3-pointer. Davis then scored twice in succession and Allen had three baskets, the last on a give-and-go from Garnett that put the Celtics ahead 65-64.

"The 3 Ray Allen hit out of the timeout was inexcusable," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "That should never happen. What it boiled down to is we didn't have the toughness they had."

Davis finished the third quarter with another easy layup, and Delonte West converted a three-point play at the start of the fourth to give the Celtics a 70-64 lead.

The Hornets managed just eight points in the final 10:45 of the third and two - on a West bucket - in the last six minutes.

Okafor had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets. Trevor Ariza also had 10 points.

NOTES: The Hornets do not play again until Thursday at Utah. The layoff is their longest of the season other than the All-Star break. ... Boston is 2-3 in the second game when it plays on the road for two consecutive days.

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics overcame an 11-point halftime deficit by hitting 12 of 16 shots in the third quarter, finishing off the New Orleans Hornets with an 89-85 victory on the second leg of a back-to-back.

Glen Davis and Ray Allen each finished with 20 points for Boston (49-19) while David West led New Orleans with 32 points.

QUOTABLE: "It felt like a road game tonight. I'm not saying the refs. There was just a lot of energy in there tonight."
-- Hornets point guard Chris Paul, hinting at the fact that of the sellout crowd of 18,018, the New Orleans Arena was half-filled with Celtics fans.

THE STAT: Boston used only an eight-man rotation, but the three men off the bench were one of the big differences in the game. The Celtics' bench outscored New Orleans' reserves 39-6.

TURNING POINT: It was just one shot, but it was an important one. Allen hit a long-range 3-pointer with 9:41 to go in the third, Boston's first trey of the game. It jump-started the Celtics comeback from 11 points down in the third and turned a would-be blowout into a tight game.

QUOTABLE II: "We're all competing against each other. We'll never admit it, but we all want the other one to lose. I still love him though."
-- Hornets coach Monty Williams on coaching against friends and mentors this season. Williams has coached against Portland coach Nate McMillan, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich and Boston coach Doc Rivers.

HOT: New Orleans' West hadn't been himself heading into Saturday's game, but the power forward went 14-for-23 for a game-high 32 points in the loss.

NOT: This one's a double: Boston's Paul Pierce and New Orleans' Paul were stone cold Saturday night. Pierce went 1-for-9 and didn't hit his first shot until 5:20 remained in the fourth quarter. Paul, meanwhile, came into the game averaging nearly 29 points in the previous three games. He finished 0-for-9 from the floor.

GOOD MOVE: The Celtics' Davis earned fouls early in the game and had to sit down in the first half. But after despite picking up his fourth foul in the third quarter, Rivers kept him in and Davis responded with eight points in the third to help tighten the game.

NOTABLE: The Celtics went 12 of 16 in the third quarter and outscored the Hornets 27-13. ...New Orleans' Marco Belinelli was 8-for-13, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range to finish with 23 points. ... Boston's 14 first quarter points was their lowest-scoring quarter of the season.
