Nets-Bucks Preview

The Milwaukee Bucks are going the wrong way in their hunt for consecutive postseason berths. A matchup with the New Jersey Nets might help them start heading in the right direction.

Milwaukee will try to end a three-game slide by winning its eighth in a row over visiting New Jersey on Friday night.

The Bucks (26-41) are 2 1/2 games behind eighth-place Indiana in the race for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot, but haven't helped themselves over the past three games by averaging 76.7 points and shooting 38.9 percent.

Milwaukee managed to rally from a five-point deficit in the final 30 seconds Wednesday against Orlando but fell 93-89 in overtime. Brandon Jennings finished with a team-best 23 points, and John Salmons scored 20 of his 22 after halftime.

"This is a game we really wanted to have to start this (four-game) homestand," forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute said. "We got to come out on Friday with the same intensity, if not better. We definitely need to have these next three games if we still want to be in the running for the eighth spot."

The Bucks might have Andrew Bogut back in the lineup after he sat out Wednesday's loss with a migraine. They're also playing without Drew Gooden (left foot) and Ersan Ilyasova (concussion), while Michael Redd (left knee) might return next week.

Bogut's return could be key. He had 17 points and 18 rebounds in a 91-81 home win over New Jersey (22-44) on Jan. 29, when Carlos Delfino finished with 21 points to lead Milwaukee's starters, who all scored in double figures.

The Bucks didn't need Bogut's help three weeks earlier, when their center was out sick but they scored a then-season high in a 115-92 rout at New Jersey. Chris Douglas-Roberts had a team-high 24 points off the bench for Milwaukee, which shot a season-best 58.3 percent.

This time, the Nets have recent acquisition Deron Williams, who scored 22 points in each of his two matchups with Milwaukee this season while with Utah. The All-Star point guard, however, is dealing with a wrist injury and is coming off one of the worst shooting performances of his career, a 1-for-12 effort Thursday in an 84-73 home loss to Chicago.

New Jersey shot 34.9 percent as a team as its five-game winning streak came to an end. Brook Lopez had 22 points in the loss, his eighth consecutive game with at least 20.

"We could have played a lot better and shot a lot better; 35 percent from the field is tough to win," Williams said.

Lopez scored a team-high 26 points in the Jan. 29 loss at Milwaukee.

Delfino hits 8 3s, Bucks beat Nets 110-95

MILWAUKEE (AP) Andrew Bogut looked up and down the stat sheet. It was hard to pick out just one star for the Milwaukee Bucks on this night.

"It's always nice to see us scoring in bunches like this," Bogut said. "It's much harder to scout and it's much more effective when you're out there and you have three or four weapons that can all score."

Carlos Delfino scored 26 points, making a career-high eight 3-pointers, and the Bucks beat the New Jersey Nets 110-95 on Friday night to halt a three-game losing streak.

John Salmons added 25 points and all five starters finished in double figures for the Bucks, who still cling to hopes they can reach the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

"I guess it was one of those days," Delfino said. "You start hitting the first shots and then your teammates are doing their job to find you."

Milwaukee (27-41) is 2 1/2 games behind eighth-place Indiana and a game back of Charlotte in the Eastern Conference with 14 to play. The Bucks also are hoping to get Drew Gooden, Ersan Ilyasova and Michael Redd back from injuries in the next week.

"Carlos had a great night for us, eight 3s is big in any game. John Salmons was big for us," Bogut said. "Everybody who played contributed. We needed a win like this at home."

Brook Lopez scored 25 points for his ninth straight game with at least 20 and needed seven stitches, while Deron Williams had another tough shooting night despite 18 points as the Nets lost their second in two nights.

Williams' sprained right wrist, which he aggravated bracing a fall, is becoming a big issue for the Nets.

"We're very concerned and it's something we're going to have a deep discussion about," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "We were going to leave him out, but he wanted to go back in. I don't think we can continue every game at this rate."

Milwaukee shot 39 percent from the field during the three-game skid that followed a three-game winning streak. The Nets didn't pose the same defensive challenges as the Celtics, Hawks and Magic did.

The Bucks hit 57 percent of their shots, just shy of their season-best 58.3 percent set in January against the Nets in New Jersey.

"Guys were moving the ball early, we got good looks," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said.

Milwaukee finished the third quarter on a 6-0 run, capped when Brandon Jennings hit a 5-footer in the lane in the closing seconds to give the Bucks an 80-73 lead. Delfino's seventh 3-pointer made it 95-84 midway through the fourth and his eighth came in the final minute. Jennings finished with 16 points and 10 assists.

Bogut returned after missing a game with a migraine headache and made a big early impression with a slam over Kris Humphries that drew a foul. Bogut converted the three-point play, finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds in 35 minutes, but was holding his right elbow at every break in the fourth quarter after getting tangled up with Lopez.

Lopez needed seven stitches on his chin and chipped a tooth. Bogut was icing his arm afterward, the same one that needed season-ending surgery last year after an ugly fall.

"It's sore," Bogut said. "It went right into his chin."

Jennings said in the locker room before the game that he wished Williams hadn't gone 1 of 12 the night before in a loss to Chicago because he knew the point guard would be poised for a big game.

No chance with Williams ailing.

Johnson said the star point guard will need four to six weeks of no contact to heal completely in the offseason.

Williams scored nine first-quarter points, including a 63-footer at the buzzer that didn't touch the rim going in, but that was the last shot he made until a jumper in the fourth, nearly 30 minutes later.

He finished 4 of 13 from the field and 8 of 9 from the free throw line.

"I need to rest. Until I do that, it's going to hurt and I'm going to continue to be frustrated. It's affecting me mentally now, too," said Williams, who described it as a strained tendon that does not need surgery. "I love playing basketball. I hate sitting out more than anybody. It's tough for me because I don't want to just sit out, but it might be the best thing. We'll see."

Notes: Bucks F Luc Richard Mbah a Moute had 15 points. ... Gooden, who has missed 27 straight games and 42 overall this season, says he had a cortisone shot last Friday and is 100 percent pain free from plantar fasciitis that's bothered him most of the season. ... Ilyasova (concussion) could return to practice as early as Saturday and may be available for Milwaukee's game on Sunday against the Knicks. He's missed the last three weeks. ... Redd (left knee) is on track to return next week.

THE FACTS: Carlos Delfino made a career-high eight 3-pointers and tied his season high with 26 points, and John Salmons added 25 points as the Milwaukee Bucks scored a 110-95 victory over the New Jersey Nets Friday night in Milwaukee to snap a three-game losing streak.

QUOTABLE: "I guess it was one of those days. You start hitting the first shots and then your teammates are doing the job to find you."

THE STAT: The Bucks shot 56.8 percent from the field, their second-best shooting night of the season. Their best shooting performance came back on Jan. 8 when they shot 58.3 percent -- also against the Nets.

TURNING POINT: With the score tied, 59-59, after New Jersey's Anthony Morrow scored on a layup, Delfino gave the Bucks the lead for good with a 3-pointer with 8:05 left in the third, then added two more threes over the next 2 1/2 minutes to give Milwaukee a 70-63 lead. The Nets crept within 74-73, but the Bucks scored the last six points of the third quarter and never led by less than four the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "That opens up the floor for us. Carlos' shooting really opens up the floor for me, and Brandon (Jennings) can get into the paint and finish. When we do that, I guess that was (general manager) John Hammond's vision for the team that that's how it should be every game. Obviously it doesn't work that way in the NBA, but we've got shooters, we've got an inside presence and we've got a good point guard, so hopefully we can keep it up."

HOT: Salmons made 11 of 16 shots from the field, his best percentage performance of the season, and is now 21 for 35 (60 percent) in his last two games. Prior to those two games he was shooting 39 percent (268 for 687).

NOT: Nets point guard Deron Williams made just 4 of 13 from the field.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Along with his 26 points and eight 3-pointers, Delfino added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

ROOKIE WATCH: Larry Sanders played 11 1/2 minutes but went just 1-for-5 from the floor. He did grab three rebounds, however, after going without a rebound in 18 minutes Wednesday night.

NOTABLE: Nets guard Deron Williams has been hampered by a sore right wrist and talked after the game of the possibility he might have to sit out some games. "Until I do that, it's going to hurt," Williams said. "It's affecting me so much mentally now. You know I like going up against the top point guards. I like matchups. Usually fare well in those matchups, but I'm going to have a tough time doing that if I can't play my game. I'm ready to get healthy and get back to being me." Williams sank a shot from about 10 feet beyond halfcourt to beat the first-quarter buzzer and pull the Nets within 29-26 after Jennings made a jumper with two seconds left...Bogut returned after missing Wednesday's game with a migraine headache. It was the second game he's missed this season because of a migraine. He also missed a pre-season contest for the same reason. He finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots...Jennings had 16 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. ... New Jersey's Kris Humphries had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Brook Lopez led the Nets with 25 points.
