Celtics-Rockets Preview

The visiting team has won the last six matchups between the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets.

That means the advantage may be with the Celtics on Friday night when they look for a fifth straight road win over the Rockets.

Boston (48-18) is in a tight race with Chicago to earn the top seed in the Eastern Conference. This three-game trip could be critical since the Celtics begin it by playing Houston (35-34) and New Orleans on consecutive nights.

The Rockets and Hornets are two of the three teams Boston has yet to beat this season.

"We've got the playoffs coming so guys are really buckling down," forward Paul Pierce said. "We just want to finish off the season on a good note. So this is a very important trip for us to try to get all of these wins."

Boston will be out to avenge a 108-102 home loss to Houston on Jan. 10. That game may not tell the tale of what will happen Friday since both teams will look quite different in this rematch.

Four of the five reserves who played for Boston in that game won't see action, with Jermaine O'Neal out after knee surgery and the other three having been traded. In addition, Shaquille O'Neal is still out with an Achilles' injury.

Two starters for Houston in that contest - Shane Battier and Aaron Brooks - have been traded. Second-leading scorer Luis Scola has missed the last four games with a sore left knee, and there's no timetable for his return.

"It's not fun but that's just the way it is," Scola told the Rockets' official website. "I'm just trying to get it better and try to speed up the process as much as we can and hopefully be ready to play soon."

The Celtics have won seven of 10 since Nenad Krstic and Jeff Green joined the team from Oklahoma City. Krstic has been starting in place of Shaquille O'Neal while Green is adjusting to coming off the bench.

Green led a strong effort by Boston's backups with 19 points in Wednesday's 92-80 home win over Indiana. The reserves were boosted when Delonte West played 16 minutes in his first game back from a sprained ankle after missing the last eight.

"The addition of Delonte really gave them some real good vibes," Pierce said. "That unit, they are coming together. When Shaquille gets back, that's going to bolster our second unit, also."

The Rockets are in 10th place in the West as they try to catch Memphis for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Houston lost its first two games without Scola before winning the last two. Kevin Martin led five Rockets in double figures with 21 points in Wednesday's 94-78 win over Charlotte.

The Rockets never trailed for the sixth time this season, limiting the Bobcats to 37.2 percent shooting - the third-lowest mark allowed by Houston.

"It's a solid win for our guys," coach Rick Adelman said. "We came out and defended them pretty well. We did what we had to do, which was control the game from the very start."

Martin, Patterson lead Rockets' rout of Celtics

HOUSTON (AP) Chuck Hayes showed Kevin Garnett he wasn't intimidated, and the Houston Rockets took a cue from their tough forward and routed the Boston Celtics.

Kevin Martin scored 25 points and rookie Patrick Patterson had 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in the Rockets' 93-77 win Friday night.

Hayes had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Rockets, who've won three in a row and moved within 1 1/2 games of Memphis in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Rockets shot well and pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Boston 34-18. As the deficit widened, the Celtics started losing their poise.

Garnett and Hayes traded shoves and words, and referee Jason Phillips gave them both technical fouls. Hayes was glad to get one and make a statement that the Rockets weren't going to back down.

"They tried to isolate him on the block, and that was the wrong time to do it," Hayes said. "I had so much adrenaline rushing, I was determined not to let him get a score."

On the next play, Glen Davis fell into the crowd along the baseline after he was pushed by Jordan Hill, then got up yelling and pointing at Hill. The Houston backup forward was called for a personal foul, and Davis got a technical with 2:45 remaining.

"It was just a wild sequence there," Hayes said. "We took the momentum. They tried their best to be aggressive. We fought them right back."

A minute later, Delonte West was whistled for a flagrant foul when he hammered Hill under the Rockets' basket.

Houston took advantage of Boston's outbursts, hitting all the resulting free throws and extending the lead to 58-37. Kyle Lowry swished another 3-pointer just before the buzzer to put the Rockets ahead 62-40 at the break.

"We were just terrific," Houston coach Rick Adelman said. "That was about as good as we can play at both ends of the court. We were reactive, we really moved the ball well, we were getting good opportunities."

Jeff Green scored 17 points and Davis added 16 for the Celtics, who've lost four of six. Boston slipped a half game behind Chicago for the best record in the East.

Paul Pierce scored 10 points, but went 2 for 10 from the field, and Rajon Rondo had only four points on 2-for-11 shooting. Boston's point total was a season low for a Rockets' opponent.

Coach Doc Rivers rested his starters for the entire fourth quarter, about the only positive thing to come out of the performance.

"I just thought, 'Let's just throw this one away,"' Rivers said. "This is one of those games where they did everything better. You just go on to the next game."

The Rockets went 7 for 14 from 3-point range and 15 for 15 from the free throw line in the first half. Martin had 19 points and Lowry had 16 in the first half, while the Celtics had no players in double-figures.

"We can't let our offense dictate what our defense does," Garnett said. "We couldn't get stops. It seemed like when they took over the game, they just ran with it."

Patterson slipped inside for a two-handed dunk early in the third quarter, and the Rockets kept control. He slammed home a rebound later in the quarter to make it 81-52.

Houston mustered only 12 points in the final quarter, but still never let the lead dip below 16. The Rockets went 21 for 23 from the free throw line and outrebounded Boston 44-35.

"We knew that they were very physical and they were going to grab and pull and they were going to try and intimidate," Adelman said. "We've got a young group, and all we talked about before the game and at timeouts was that you play through it. I was really pleased with the way our guys approached it."

The Rockets led 28-22 after the first quarter, and reserves Goran Dragic and Brad Miller hit 3s early in the second to push the lead into double digits. Rivers had his starting lineup back in by the midpoint of the second quarter, but Martin's 3 with 4:25 left gave Houston a 47-33 lead.

The Celtics let their frustration boil over after that, and the Rockets were never threatened again.

NOTES: Rivers said athletic trainer Ed Lacerte will have the final call on when C Shaquille O'Neal returns from a right Achilles' injury that's kept him out since Feb. 4. "He's not playing until the doctors say he can play," Rivers said. ... Rockets F Luis Scola sat out for the fifth straight game with a sore left knee. Adelman expected Scola to return to action next week. ... The Rockets had lost the previous four meetings with the Celtics in Houston.

THE FACTS: The Houston Rockets' playoff aspirations are not as delusional as they may have seemed hours ago.

Kevin Martin scored a game-high 25 points, and Houston crept closer toward catching the Memphis Grizzlies for eighth place in the Western Conference with a shocking 93-77 beatdown of the Boston Celtics on Friday at Toyota Center. Kyle Lowry added 20 points and nine assists for the Rockets (36-34), who have climbed to 1 1/2 games behind Memphis for the West's final playoff spot and two games above .500 for the first time this season.

Jeff Green led Boston with 17 points and two blocks. Glen Davis chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds for the Celtics (48-19), who remain one-half game behind the Chicago Bulls for first place in the Eastern Conference despite losing four of their last six games.

Friday's matchup featured several tense moments, especially in the second quarter when two Celtics and one Rocket received technical fouls and another Boston player was whistled for a flagrant foul penalty one. The Celtics are known for their bullying style of play, but their aggressive approach simply fueled an already motivated Houston squad.

QUOTABLE: "We lost our composure. They got into ... all the talking and barking. [The Rockets] slowed down and played better, and we got so excited we started playing quicker and sloppier."

THE STAT: Boston allowed 62 points in the first half, and when the Celtics allow more than 50 in the opening two quarters they lose. Friday's defeat dropped Boston to 0-5 this season when it allows at least 50 points before halftime.

THE STAT II: The Celtics' starters, who entered Friday averaging 70 points as a unit, were outscored by Houston's starting five 76-38.

BAD MOVE: Boston seemed more interested in a brawl than basketball during the closing moments of the second period. Kevin Garnett and Chuck Hayes exchanged words, leading to a double-technical foul. Seconds later, Jordan Hill shoved Glen Davis. Davis responded by running toward Hill in a defiant manner and received a tech for his actions. A couple possessions later, Delonte West was whistled for a flagrant foul penalty one on Hill.

TURNING POINT: The aforementioned confrontations ruined the Celtics' chances of overcoming an early double-digit deficit. Instead of letting their emotions overwhelm them, the Rockets sharpened their focus and ended the first half on a 13-3 run that stretched their lead to 62-40.

QUOTABLE II: "If they want to make it [physical], that's fine. We can play that way."

HOT: Lowry helped keep the Rockets' offense flowing smoothly against one of the league's top defensive teams. Although his scoring total and hot shooting from long range (4-for-7 from 3-point range) were critical in getting Houston off to a fast start, his nine assists and on-the-court leadership were just as critical.

NOT: Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo generated little offense for Boston, combining for only 14 points on 4-for-21 (19.0 percent) shooting.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Hayes has been racking up a massive amount of points for his fantasy owners over the last three games. During this period, Hayes is averaging 13.7 points, 12 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Friday's stat line of 11 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals illustrates the versatility Hayes can bring to an owner's fantasy lineup.

ROOKIE WATCH: The Rockets' Patrick Patterson gave Houston the activity it needed around the basket and set solid picks throughout the game. In the third start of his career, the rookie out of the University of Kentucky finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

INSIDE THE ARENA: One of the greatest running backs to ever put on football pads, Earl Campbell, sat courtside. ... Celtic green could be spotted throughout the arena, but the Boston fans' presence could not be felt once the Rockets opened up a huge lead.

NOTABLE: Adelman moved into a tie with legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach for ninth all-time on the NBA regular-season coaching wins list. With 938 career victories, Adelman needs six more to catch Bill Fitch for eighth.

NOTABLE II: The home team won for the first time in seven meetings between these two clubs, with Houston halting a four-game losing streak against the Celtics at Toyota Center. ... Boston fell to 7-5 since trading Kendrick Perkins to the Oklahoma City Thunder. ... The Celtics lost for only the second time this season on the first night of a back-to-back. ... Houston has won its last 16 games when holding an opponent to less than 100 points, which stands as the longest active streak in the NBA. ... Houston improved to 22-4 when it allows less than 100 points. ... The Rockets have scored at least 60 points in a half 27 times this season.
