Carmelo Anthony hit his first game-winning shot for the New York Knicks last week against the Memphis Grizzlies. That game, however, marked the start of some major defensive struggles for New York.

The Knicks have lost three straight since that victory heading into Thursday night's rematch with the Grizzlies at Madison Square Garden.

Anthony made a 19-foot jumper over Tony Allen with 0.5 seconds left to lift New York (34-32) to a 110-108 victory at Memphis (37-31) last Wednesday. The All-Star forward scored 31 points as the Knicks blew a 17-point lead before holding on.

The victory may have masked a poor defensive effort, with the Grizzlies shooting 53.7 percent and outscoring the Knicks 33-4 at the foul line. New York has now allowed four straight opponents to shoot over 50 percent for the first time since the final four games of last season.

The Knicks let Indiana shoot 52.3 percent Tuesday in their second loss in three days to the Pacers, 119-117.

New York has allowed an average of 117.3 points during its three-game skid.

"We know we got to get it going, some kind of way," forward Shawne Williams said. "I feel like we all got to take a good look in the mirror and redefine ourselves. We got to take more pride in defense."

However, the Knicks did rally from a 15-point deficit to take a late lead Tuesday after losing its previous two games by an average of 15.5 points.

"I thought the effort was better for us tonight than the last two losses that we had," point guard Chauncey Billups said. "So it's a process, it's a process. We just have to get over that hump."

The Knicks are in a tight race with Philadelphia for the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference, although a playoff spot appears secure. That's not the case for Memphis despite its better record.

The Grizzlies are in eighth place in the Western Conference as they try to hold off Phoenix, Utah and Houston for a postseason berth. Memphis avoided a third straight loss with Monday's 105-82 rout of the Clippers.

"As you're battling down the stretch here, you don't want four- or five-game losing streaks," coach Lionel Hollins said. "I thought our defense was solid in the early part of the game."

Memphis led by as many as 31 points and bounced back from its worst loss, 118-85 at Miami on Saturday.

"I thought we did a great job of playing with energy and coming out here and just competing," guard Greivis Vasquez said. "We got this win and we needed it since we lost against Miami the way we lost."

Zach Randolph had 30 points and 12 rebounds in the victory, and he's excelled against the Knicks since they traded him to the Clippers early in 2008-09. He's averaged 26.0 points and 13.6 rebounds in his last five games against New York.

The power forward should match up at times against Amare Stoudemire, who is averaging 29.2 points over his last seven games. Stoudemire had 26 points in last week's win over Memphis.

Billups did not play in that game due to a bruised left thigh but has started the last two, missing all 11 of his 3-point attempts.

NEW YORK (AP) Toney Douglas lined up those loud green sneakers behind the arc one last time and let it fly.

When the ball went through, the New York Knicks had to rewrite their record book.

Douglas tied a franchise record by making nine of the Knicks' franchise-record 20 3-pointers, scoring 29 points in a 120-99 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night that snapped a three-game losing streak.

"Once I started hitting, I felt like there was no defense out there," Douglas said. "No matter if a man was on me, anything I threw up was going in."

Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points and Chauncey Billups added 18 for the Knicks, who were 20 of 36 (55.6 percent) from behind the arc and moved back ahead of Philadelphia into sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Knicks wore green uniforms for St. Patrick's Day, but Douglas' sneakers were the wrong shade of green - sort of like the Hulk. Everything else was nearly perfect, and his ninth 3-pointer, with 17 seconds left, gave the team a record total and allowed him to match Latrell Sprewell and John Starks on the individual game list.

"I love that color. I had two days of practice in them and everybody was like, 'Wow, those are really loud shoes,"' Douglas said. "They're special shoes now."

Mike Conley scored 16 points for the Grizzlies, whose lead was sliced to one game over Utah for the final playoff spot in the West.

"They shoot the ball very well against us," Memphis forward Zach Randolph said. "It was one of them games, a disappointing game. We came out and played and didn't stick to our game plan (and) didn't stick to the identity of our team the way we play and they blew us out."

Amare Stoudemire scored 16 for the Knicks, who shot 52 percent overall and were 18 of 21 at the free-throw line.

New York had dropped three straight since Anthony's jumper with 0.5 seconds left in a 110-108 victory at Memphis on March 9, allowing an alarming 117.3 points per game during the skid, which included a home-and-home sweep by a sub.-500 Indiana team.

The defense was better, but the story was the record-breaking perimeter game.

The Knicks turned an eight-point halftime lead into a blowout by hitting seven 3-pointers in the third quarter. Billups hit two early in the period and scored 12 points, while Douglas closed the quarter with two in the final 34 seconds as New York build a 92-74 lead.

Their previous record of 19 3s also came against the Grizzlies on Nov. 12, 2008.

"They beat us with 3s last game. They beat us tonight with 3s," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "I just told our team that if that if they shoot 3s like that every night, they'd be tough to beat. Obviously they don't because they got smashed by Indiana and beat by Indiana because they didn't make 3s. But you win, you live by the jumper, you die by the jumper. We struggled to guard them on the 3-point line and we struggled to score consistently."

It was a sorely needed win for a Knicks team that has been inconsistent while Denver has rolled since their blockbuster trade involving Anthony last month. The Knicks are now only 7-6 since, even though the struggles ultimately have meant nothing to their playoff hopes.

The Knicks are still in sixth, just as they were when the deal went down, and haven't been lower than that since they were seventh through games of Dec. 2, according to STATS, LLC.

Yet that's done nothing to relax a fan base with bulked-up expectations since acquiring a second star to pair with Stoudemire. Coach Mike D'Antoni joked the fans that are panicking should "take some Prozac or something."

"Hang in there, we're hanging in there, we're pedaling as fast as we can pedal," he said before the game.

"The biggest thing, and I'll just keep repeating," he added, "is that we're not going to get caught up in the hysteria and we're going to be who we are, we're going to play as well as we can and get it together and hang in as a group and try to make the playoffs and then try to do as good as we can."

No worries this time from the fans, who were too busy chanting Douglas' name in the final minute.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first quarter, which ended in a 29-all tie. Douglas, who makes the Knicks so much more dangerous when his outside shot is falling, was 5 for 6 from behind the arc for 15 points in the second period as New York took a 59-51 halftime lead.

Douglas shot 1 of 12 in Sunday's home loss to Indiana, but finished 10 of 14 in this one, 9 for 12 from 3-point range.

"When he plays as well as he did, we can be a dangerous team," said Stoudemire, who told his teammates early there would be open shots for them after noticing their defense was geared up to stop him.

Darrell Arthur had 15 points, while Randolph and Tony Allen scored 14 for Memphis.

NOTES: The Knicks are 2-0 this season in their green uniforms, which they wore while beating Chicago on Christmas. ... Memphis G Jason Williams had an MRI on his back that revealed no structural damage. He continues to be listed as out with lower back soreness. ... THE FACTS: Toney Douglas and his bright green shoes seemed to be New York's lucky charm. In desperate need of a win following a three-game skid, Douglas tied the Knicks' franchise record for 3-pointers made and finished with 29 points in the New York's 120-99 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on St. Patrick's Day at Madison Square Garden. The reserve guard went 9-for-12 from downtown for New York, which set a franchise record for 3-pointers made with 20.

QUOTABLE: "The dude at the scorer's table just said, 'Hit one more three.' I was like, 'Huh?' I didn't really realize it would tie the record. He just said to hit one more three, but I didn't really pay no mind. I was just playing my game and taking what the defense gave me."

THE STAT: The Knicks set a franchise record for 3-pointers with 20 on 36 attempts, surpassing their previous mark of 19 set at Memphis on Nov. 12, 2008. New York improved to 23-5 this season when knocking down at least 10 3-pointers.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks drained seven 3-pointers in the third quarter as they extended an eight-point halftime lead to 18 by the end of the period. Unlike the previous meeting between the two teams -- when the Grizzlies erased a 17-point third-quarter deficit to tie the game late before Anthony's last-second game-winner -- the Knicks were able to hold on and improved to 7-6 with their new roster.

QUOTABLE II: "We tried to play zone and we tried to go a little smaller, but they're a very talented team and nothing worked for us the two times that we played them. We don't shoot the three ball very well, so you can't match them. If you make a few threes of your own, you balance out some of the threes that they make. We couldn't do that."

HOT: Carmelo Anthony poured in 28 points for his 10th 20-point game since coming from Denver three days before last month's trade deadline. Chauncey Billups, who was also acquired in the trade, finished with 18 points and eight assists.

NOT: Zach Randolph was unable to put together another strong game against his former team, scoring just 14 points and grabbing six rebounds in 30 minutes. The Grizzlies' 6-foot-9 forward, who played over a season in New York before being traded to the Clippers, entered the night averaging 26.0 points and 13.6 rebounds in his last five games against the Knicks.

NOTABLE: The Knicks are 2-0 in their green uniforms this season, improving to 3-4 since they began the tradition. They defeated the Chicago Bulls while rocking the green on Christmas Day.
