The Minnesota Timberwolves aren't going to the playoffs while the Golden State Warriors' postseason hopes remain slim

That hasn't stopped either team from playing hard.

Looking to avoid their sixth loss in seven games to the Warriors, the Timberwolves will try for a season-best third consecutive win overall Sunday night.

Minnesota (17-50), which hasn't won three straight since a four-game run Jan. 29-Feb. 6, 2010, had lost 11 of 14 before recording the second of back-to-back wins, 122-101 over Utah on Friday.

"This means something for us, especially at this time of the year," said Darko Milicic, who had 14 points and six rebounds. "It's almost the end of the season and we're kind of a struggling team that's not going to make the playoffs. We all know that. We know we're going to go home April 13."

The Timberwolves sit in 14th place in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Warriors are in 12th place and remain six games behind Memphis for the eighth and final playoff spot with 17 games to go.

Golden State (29-36) has not been to the postseason since 2006-07, and entered play Friday having dropped of seven of nine - a stretch that included a 126-123 loss at Minnesota on Feb. 27.

The Warriors found themselves down by 21 against Orlando, but rallied for a 123-120 overtime victory thanks in large part to a franchise-best 21 3-pointers - the third-most in NBA history - on 60.0 percent shooting from long distance.

"(The) team showed a lot of pride and heart going out there playing against one of these elite teams in the NBA," said swingman Dorell Wright, who finished with eight 3-pointers and tied a career high with 32 points.

Monta Ellis, in the top 10 in the league with 25.0 points per game, went a career-best 7 of 9 from 3-point range, and finished with 39 points and 11 assists.

"We'll shock some people and win some big games like this," coach Keith Smart said. "But it's still a process to where we can grow this team to where we have a legitimate, contending team every year."

The Timberwolves know all too well about Wright's ability to shoot from beyond the arc, as he made a career-best nine 3s and scored 30 points in Golden State's 104-94 road win on Nov. 27.

Wright, scoring a career-high 16.2 points per game, is averaging 22.7 against the Timberwolves this season - the second-most against any opponent.

Minnesota had lost five straight to the Warriors by an average of 15.0 points prior last month's win in which Kevin Love registered 37 points and 23 rebounds.

Love, averaging 23.7 points and 19.6 rebounds versus Golden State in 2010-11, extended the longest double-double streak since 1973-74 to 53 consecutive games with 24 points and 12 rebounds Friday.

Minnesota is averaging 105.6 points in its last eight games and has won the last two by an average of 23.5.

"We've been playing good basketball, I'll tell you that much," said Love. "Always defense has to come first and we have to get stops on that end, but if we can move the ball and everybody can contribute and we can play out there and have fun in this system, that's how we can click and thats how it can work."

Love's double-double streak ends in Warriors loss

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Kevin Love's remarkable streak of consecutive double-doubles came to an end with a thud, and no one was happier about it than the Minnesota star himself.

Slowed by a thigh injury and worn out from all the attention he's been receiving lately, Love sounded relieved and eager to move on now that it's over.

"Now I can start focusing on playing my game," said Love after being held to six points and 12 rebounds in the Timberwolves' 100-77 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday. "I thought I was doing it for myself but a lot of it was for the fans and everybody watching. I feel a big weight off my shoulders."

It's the first time since Nov. 19 that Love has failed to register a double-double. His 53-game streak was a franchise record and the longest in the NBA since Elvin Hayes did it in 55 consecutive games in 1973-74.

Love's streak has been the only thing keeping the Timberwolves (17-51) in the headlines these days. Not anymore.

While Love did his part on the boards, he struggled to do anything offensively against Golden State's David Lee. Paired against Love most of the night, Lee repeatedly denied the ball in the low post and kept Love from scoring off offensive rebounds, something that had become of staple of the streak.

"Lee does a good job of high-siding him and fronting him," Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis said. "They also did a good job of collapsing on him when he got the ball inside."

Sensing his run was over, Love quietly checked out of the game with 4:08 left. He finished just 1 of 6 from the floor.

That was in stark contrast to the game Love had on Feb. 27, when he scorched the Warriors for 37 points and 23 rebounds.

"Kevin's a good friend of mine but when he has a performance like he did against us in Minnesota, definitely pride has to take over and try to stop that streak," said Lee, who had eight points and six rebounds. "I had a lot of help tonight. The biggest thing was I knew if we could keep him from having a big night that we could win another game."

Stephen Curry had 24 points and nine rebounds, while Monta Ellis and Dorell Wright added 16 points apiece for Golden State, which has already won four more games under first-year coach Keith Smart than it did last season.

The Warriors, who rallied from 21 points down to beat Orlando in overtime on Friday, trailed early before pulling away from the hapless Timberwolves.

Golden State led by five at halftime, went on a 13-2 run coming out of the break, then cruised the rest of the way in a battle of two teams going nowhere this season.

Minnesota had no response and shot just 36.6 percent from the floor while losing for the fourth time in six games. The 77 points were a season low for Rambis' team.

Love made his first shot of the game early in the first quarter but couldn't get much going after that. He was held under 10 points for the first time since going scoreless against the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 19.

After sitting the final 2 minutes of the third quarter and the first 3-plus minutes of the fourth, Love returned in the fourth but scored just one point as Minnesota struggled to get him the ball.

When Love went to the bench for good in the fourth, a section of Warriors fans chanted, "Your streak's over."

"I'm not too upset that the streak's come to an end," Love said. "It's OK. If we were winning and I was getting this, it would mean a lot more, but it is what it is."

None of the Timberwolves did much, either, and Minnesota lost to Golden State for the third time in four games this season.

The Warriors, who set a franchise record with 21 3-pointers in Friday's win over Orlando, cooled off considerably from beyond the arc - though it hardly mattered. Golden State led by as much as 24 and got a lift from reserve Lew Amundson.

Amundson had 11 points and seven rebounds, helping overcome center Andris Biedrins' sluggish night. Biedrins had just six rebounds and was held scoreless.

Wright made a 3-pointer and a fast-break layup on consecutive possessions to give the Warriors a 62-46 midway through the third quarter. Curry later added a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth when Golden State led 92-70.

Notes:Golden State rookie Ekpe Udoh had a season-high five blocks. ... The Warriors clinched a winning record at home for the fifth time in the last six years.

THE FACTS: Stephen Curry scored 24 points and added nine rebounds and six assists as the Golden State Warriors snapped Kevin Love's 53-game double-double streak in a 100-77 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday. Love, who had the longest string of consecutive double-doubles in the NBA since Elvin Hayes recorded 55 straight in 1973-74, was held to six points on 1-for-6 shooting and failed to score 10 points for the first time since Nov. 19. The Timberwolves couldn't get Love the ball because they were committing 27 turnovers; that ineptitude helped Golden State hold Minnesota to 36.6 percent shooting and a season-low point total.

QUOTABLE: "It's extremely impressive. You just look at how long it's been, and you know he's a part of every opposing team's game plan. It's not like it's been easy for him. It's been very, very difficult to get those numbers, night in and night out. ....That was an incredible run, but there's no reason to think that he's not going to start another one."

THE STAT: Golden State turned Minnesota's 27 turnovers into 33 points, and both numbers represented season-bests for the Warriors. Darko Milicic had six turnovers in just 19 minutes, and point guard Luke Ridnour added five more as the Timberwolves watched their attack misfire time and again.

TURNING POINT: Minnesota threw the ball around like beads from a Mardi Gras float for much of the night, but never more so than in the first 6:09 of the second half, when the Timberwolves scored only two points -- a pair of Michael Beasley free throws -- against seven missed shots and six turnovers. The Warriors turned that largesse into a 13-2 run that salted the game away.

HOT: Lou Amundson, a non-factor for much of the season in Golden State due to injuries, had his second double-digit game in a week, providing 11 points and seven assists off the bench.

NOT: Love torched the Warriors for 37 points and 23 rebounds in their last previous meeting, on Feb. 27. But Golden State made sure he was a non-factor Sunday, with David Lee doing a good job fronting him to prevent entry passes in the post and Minnesota's haphazard offensive performance short-circuiting several screen-and-roll situations.

QUOTABLE II: "Now I can start focusing on just playing my game. I was still doing it for myself, but a lot of it was for the fans and everybody that wanted to watch me get those double-doubles. I feel a big weight off my shoulders. I'm pretty happy with what I did. I don't think we should look at it as, 'The streak came to an end.' For me, it's a time to reflect on what I did well."

ROOKIE WATCH: Wesley Johnson's shooting struggles continue. Since Jan. 1, Johnson is 104-for-286 from the floor (36.4 percent), and Sunday's 1-for-9 mark didn't help. Johnson ended up playing only 22 minutes, as Martell Webster (16 points in 27 minutes) continues to eat into his playing time.

NOTABLE: Warriors rookie Ekpe Udoh had a career-high five blocks. ... Recently acquired Golden State forward Al Thornton staked his claim to move past bench scorer Reggie Williams in coach Keith Smart's rotation, dropping eight points in 19 minutes. Williams had four points in nine minutes, mostly garbage time. ... Minnesota forward Anthony Randolph, the Warriors' first-round selection in 2008, made his first appearance as an opponent in Oracle Arena and finished with eight points and four fouls in 20 minutes.
