Clippers-Wizards Preview

While there hasn't been much to cheer about for the Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers, the play of John Wall and Blake Griffin has both franchises optimistic about the future.

The last two No. 1 overall draft picks will face off for the first time as the Wizards and Clippers meet at the Verizon Center on Saturday night.

Griffin and Wall are the NBA's top two scoring rookies, averaging 22.5 points and 15.5 points, respectively. Griffin was the No. 1 overall pick of the Clippers in 2009, missing last season because of a knee injury, while the Wizards selected Wall at No. 1 last summer.

Despite the players' individual successes this season, Washington has the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference while Los Angeles is third-worst in the West.

The Clippers (25-41) were denied their first five-game winning streak since 2006 on Friday, blowing a 20-point lead in a 102-98 overtime loss to New Jersey. Griffin bounced back with 23 points and nine rebounds after being held to 12 points in a win over Boston on Wednesday, but missed a potential go-ahead free throw with 1.2 seconds left in regulation.

Mo Williams, who came in averaging 19.0 points in five games, was held to nine on 3-of-17 shooting.

"It's just one of those games that leaves a sour taste in your mouth," Williams said. "Obviously I'm disappointed in my performance personally. As a team we didn't do the things we did the first half for whatever reason. It starts with me, also. I take a lot of blame in it. Just not being able to stop the bleeding in the second half and make plays for my teammates."

Despite their struggles this season, the Clippers may have a good chance at bouncing back against the Wizards (16-47), who have lost nine of 10. They are coming off a 95-76 loss to Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Washington tied its lowest-scoring performance of the season while shooting 37.6 percent. However, coach Flip Saunders liked what he saw late in the first quarter and early in the second when he had five rookies on the floor.

"That was probably our best stint, to be honest," Saunders said. "They competed, and we had really a pretty good stretch at that time."

Jordan Crawford scored a career-high 22 points while Wall had 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

"We played with a lot of hustle, got back into the game, but unfortunately with young players like us sometimes there are slipups, so we couldn't maintain keeping up with them and they got out to a good lead," Crawford said.

Josh Howard is expected to be back in the lineup Saturday after missing the last three games but Andray Blatche will be out with a shoulder injury suffered Tuesday.

The Wizards have lost three straight to the Clippers.

Griffin powers Clippers in 122-101 rout of Wizards

WASHINGTON (AP) Blake Griffin was unstoppable in the first half, then silent in the second.

On this night, the Los Angeles Clippers didn't need him.

Griffin scored all of his 26 points in the first half and Los Angeles beat the Washington Wizards 122-101 on Saturday in a matchup between the last two No. 1 overall draft picks.

Griffin got the best of John Wall both on the scoreboard and in the individual battle, as Wall finished with 25 points, although the rookie from Kentucky also added eight assists and seven rebounds.

Griffin was everywhere in the first half, dominating the Wizards' post players with his strength and post-up moves. In the game's first 10 minutes, Griffin scored 16 points and put nearly every Washington big man in foul trouble as the Clippers went on a 23-3 run to build a 32-13 lead.

"Blake got us going," Los Angeles coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We wanted the ball inside and to get to the free throw line and control the game that way, and I thought he got us off to a great start."

The Clippers are used to these kinds of impressive performances from Griffin, especially early in games.

"I don't know what it is about the first quarter, but he always starts us out right," Los Angeles guard Eric Bledsoe said. "He's just terrific in the first quarter."

Griffin finished the half 8 of 15 from the floor and 10 of 11 from the line, in what appeared to be the start of a very big night for the All-Star forward.

"My teammates found me early and I just got into a rhythm," Griffin said. "I felt pretty good in the first half and we just all moved the ball and were hitting shots."

Griffin, however, only took two more shots the rest of the night. But as the Clippers fought off a Washington rally and extended the lead, Griffin was able to enjoy the game from the Los Angeles bench.

"Just sitting there on the bench, talking with Mo Williams and Randy (Foye), was nice," Griffin said. "I think that was the first time this year we've gotten to sit. At this point of the season, having played so many games and so many minutes, it's just nice to sit there."

Washington made things interesting, closing the Clippers' 19-point lead to 68-65 with 8:36 left in the third quarter. But Los Angeles went on a 29-8 burst over the third and fourth periods to cruise to its fifth win in six games.

Leading the charge was Williams, who scored 22 points, and Bledsoe, who racked up a career-high 23 points in his first matchup with former college teammate Wall.

"I just came out and tried to be aggressive," Bledsoe said. "I tried to bring the energy that we needed."

Jordan Crawford scored 16 points for the Wizards, who have lost 19 of 22 and are beginning to show frustration in their slide.

"We know it's a rebuilding process right now and there's going to be ups and downs," Wall said. "I hoped this year would be better but it's tough right now. All we can try to do is finish strong."

Los Angeles shot 23 free throws in the first quarter, compared to 21 field goal attempts, in racking up 38 points - the most given up by the Wizards in the opening frame this season.

Griffin saved his trademark theatrics for the second quarter, hooking up with Williams on an alley-oop that drew "ooohs" from the sellout crowd midway through the period. He then followed with a rainbow fadeaway jumper to give the Clippers a 61-46 lead with 3:13 remaining and added an emphatic swat of Wall's drive on the Wizards' next shot attempt.

"Blake Griffin is a phenomenal player," Washington coach Flip Saunders said.

Wall did his best to keep Washington in the game, sprinting through Los Angeles' defense to score 19 first-half points on 18 attempts as the Wizards went into the break trailing 64-55.

Notes: Saunders downplayed the Wall-Griffin matchup from his player's perspective before the game. "John is pretty much beyond that," Saunders said. "He has to worry about himself and not the competition." ... JaVale McGee grabbed eight rebounds to pass the 1,000-rebound mark for his career. He now has 1,004. ... Andray Blatche missed the game with a sprained right shoulder he suffered in Wednesday's loss to Milwaukee, while Rashard Lewis missed his third straight contest with a sore knee. Josh Howard returned to the lineup after missing the previous three games with a strained left hamstring.

Clippers-Wizards notebook

THE FACTS: Blake Griffin scored all 26 of his points before halftime and Eric Bledsoe scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half as the Los Angeles Clippers ran away with a 122-101 win against the Washington Wizards. The Wizards, who trailed by as many as 19 in the first half, cut the lead to three points with 8 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. That was as close as Washington would get as the Clippers pulled away again with a 15-2 run, including nine points from Mo Williams, who finished with 22. Los Angeles eventually built the lead to 27 points before putting on the cruise control.

The game was the first matchup between Griffin, the 2009 No. 1 pick, and 2010 No. 1 draft choice John Wall. The Wizards point guard did his best to keep Washington in the game, finishing with 25 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "At this point in the season, having played so many games and so many minutes, it's nice to just sit there."

THE STAT: The Clippers shot 23 free throws in the first quarter -- compared to 21 field goals -- with Blake Griffin making 8 of 9 from the line in the period. Griffin was 10 of 11 on free throws in the game, and the Clippers finished 31 for 43 -- tying their most free throw attempts in any game this season.

TURNING POINT: Washington came back with a 10-0 run over the second and third quarters and seemed to have the momentum when they cut the lead to 68-65 early in the third quarter and Griffin was called for an offensive foul on the next possession. Williams took the momentum back with a 3-pointer that sparked the Clippers third-quarter run.

HOT: Clippers center DeAndre Jordan had 10 points, 17 rebounds and several highlight dunks of the sort more often seen from Griffin.

NOT: The Wizards struggled to stop Griffin without forward Andray Blatche, who sprained his right shoulder Tuesday against Milwaukee. Washington's rookie Trevor Booker started the game guarding Griffin and picked up two quick fouls. He was replaced by Jianlian Yi, who had three fouls in the first period. Booker and Yi each had five fouls for the game and neither scored any points until Booker hit a shot with 7 1/2 minutes left in the game.

QUOTEABLE II: "It was tough. Just some of the calls, it got me down. They kept going to Blake, kept going to Blake, and he had a pretty good first half."

GOOD MOVE: Once it was obvious the Wizards couldn't handle Griffin inside, the Clippers got him the ball on the post nearly every possession in the first quarter. Griffin's presence helped Los Angeles to a 38-27 lead at the end of the frame.

BAD MOVE: During the Clippers' first-quarter parade to the free throw line, Jordan air-balled two separate free throw attempts and was just 4 for 10 from the line in the game.

ROOKIE WATCH: The hype was on Griffin and Wall coming in, but the game was also a reunion for Wall and Bledsoe who were teammates last year at Kentucky. Bledsoe's 23 points marked his NBA high and came in 22 minutes of playing time.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The Verizon Center was sold out for the fourth time this season, although the crowd booed the Wizards several times in the fourth quarter as the game got out of hand.

NOTABLE: Washington has lost 10 of its last 11 games and 19 of the last 22.
