The Denver Nuggets were unquestionably built to score plenty of points when Carmelo Anthony was around, but lately even George Karl admits he's not sure where his team's greatest strength lies.

He's certainly having fun trying to figure it out.

The surging Nuggets look for a seventh win in nine games since the Anthony trade when they play their lone home game during a road-heavy stretch Saturday night against the Detroit Pistons.

Denver (38-27) scored 107.6 points per game and surrendered 105.2 before dealing Anthony and Chauncey Billups, and at that point most expected Karl's team to see its offensive production take a dramatic dip.

Instead, the Nuggets' offense has stayed fairly constant - averaging 106.0 points - but they've made a dramatic improvement on the defensive end. Denver has allowed 94.6 points per game since the All-Star break, the fifth fewest in the league.

The Nuggets were clicking on both ends Thursday even without Arron Afflalo (hamstring) and Danilo Gallinari (sprained toe). Nene scored a game-high 22 points, Ty Lawson added 20 points and 11 assists and Denver shot 51.7 percent in a 116-97 win at Phoenix.

"Are we an offensive team or a defensive team?" Karl said. "... I don't know. They both were pretty good. I probably think tonight we were more dominating defensively. I thought our offense was created by our defensive actions a lot."

The Nuggets have won four of five without Gallinari, who could return as early as Tuesday's opener of a four-game road trip at New Orleans. Afflalo, meanwhile, will miss at least Saturday's game and could be out longer.

Eight Denver players have averaged in double figures since Feb. 28, led by Nene's 17.4 points per game.

The Brazilian center missed the Nuggets' visit to Detroit on Jan. 26 with a strained right calf, but Billups scored 26 in a 109-100 victory - Denver's second straight in the series after having lost 16 of 18.

This is the Nuggets' lone stop at the Pepsi Center in an eight-game stretch, and they should have a great opportunity to pick up a sixth consecutive home victory. The Pistons (23-43) have lost their last five road games, falling to 1-19 against teams .500 or above away from The Palace with Friday's 104-94 loss at Oklahoma City.

The Thunder shot 50.0 percent, the 31st time Detroit has allowed an opponent to make at least half its field-goal attempts. The Pistons are 8-23 in those games.

"Defense has been lacking all year," said Rodney Stuckey, who started 50 games before coach John Kuester decided to have him come off the bench earlier this week. "We have to get better at it, especially going to play Denver. They are an up-and-down team, so we are going to have to stay with them, they are going to be running."

One positive for Detroit has been the play of Richard Hamilton since Kuester finally allowed his disgruntled former All-Star back in the rotation. Hamilton has scored in double figures in all five games, and he's put up 20 apiece in his last two - the first time he's hit that mark in consecutive games since March 5-7.

Denver has outrebounded its opponents by 8.3 per game since the All-Star break, bad news for a Pistons team that averages the fewest boards (38.4) in the NBA.

Smith has 31 points, Nuggets beat Pistons

DENVER (AP) J.R. Smith finally got the message.

"Everybody's been telling me to catch and shoot and stop trying to make plays off the dribble," Smith said. "The last month and a half, two months, I've been passing up a lot of open 3s to get to the basket. Everybody wants me to catch and shoot, so that's what I did tonight."

Smith had a season-high 31 points, connecting on seven of his nine 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help the Denver Nuggets pull away for a 131-101 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night.

Nene added 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Ty Lawson had 15 points and 11 assists for the Nuggets, 7-2 since the blockbuster trade that sent Carmelo Anthony to New York on Feb. 22.

"They shoot the ball real well and obviously they've been putting up a lot of points since the trade, making you play their style," Detroit's Tayshaun Prince said about the Nuggets, the highest-scoring team in the NBA. "You could tell by the halftime score (66-60) we were playing their style. We're not the type of team that can keep up scoring with teams like this."

Chris Wilcox led Detroit with 21 points. Richard Hamilton added 15 points and Ben Gordon 13.

The Pistons hung with the Nuggets for much of the game and tied it at 72 on Greg Monroe's putback with 6:46 left in the third.

But the Nuggets countered with a tear, closing the period with a 21-2 run to take a 93-74 advantage.

Raymond Felton hit two 3-pointers during the surge and Lawson and Smith also connected from long range. The Nuggets punctuated the run with Felton's alley-oop setting up a thundering dunk by Kenyon Martin.

The Pistons never threatened after that. They concluded their three-game trip without a win and lost for the 11th time in their last 14 games.

"We wore them down," Denver coach George Karl said.

And Smith wore them out, especially in the fourth quarter, when he poured in 21 points.

"Just playing basketball like we all grew up playing," Smith said. "Kind of like organized pickup. You're out there running and playing."

Prince questioned the Pistons' defensive intensity in the final period after the Nuggets' broke the game open with their late third-quarter surge. The game's 30-point margin represented the Pistons' biggest loss of the season.

"When a guy is on fire like that, you just can't to let him shoot the ball like that," Prince said. "I mean when is enough enough? You go out there and play like that, and let them pretty much put the embarrassment quotation on it."

NOTES: The Nuggets were without Danilo Gallinari (toe), who missed a sixth game since breaking his left big toe at Portland on Feb. 25, and Arron Afflalo, who missed a second consecutive game since straining his left hamstring against the Los Angeles Clippers. ... Denver completed a two-game sweep of the season series with Detroit for the first time since 1993-94. Coming in, Detroit had won seven of the previous nine against the Nuggets. ... THE FACTS: J.R Smith was 9-of-16 from 3-point range and scored a season-high 31 points to lead eight Nuggets in double figures as Denver routed the Detroit Pistons 131-101 on Saturday night.

QUOTABLE: "Just playing basketball like we all grew up playing. Kind of like organized pickup. You're out there running and playing."

THE STAT: Ty Lawson went 123 games before recording his first NBA double-double. After Saturday's 15-point, 11-assist effort, he has three in his last four games.

TURNING POINT: The Pistons trailed from the start until Greg Monroe tied it at 72 midway through the third quarter. The Nuggets went on a 21-2 run to finish the period, highlighted by an alley-oop from Raymond Felton to Kenyon Martin that made it 90-74.

QUOTABLE II: "We wore them down. In the middle of the third, end of the third quarter, it seems like that's where the game is busting for us."

HOT: Smith scored 26 points in the second half and lit up Detroit with seven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to blow the game wide open.

NOT: Austin Daye played a strong two games before Detroit hit the road, but he couldn't sustain it. In the Pistons' first two games of the trip he averaged 4.5 points and five rebounds. He scored eight points Saturday, but they came in mop-up minutes.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Nene had 18 points and 11 rebounds and has come alive since the trading deadline. In his last five games he is averaging 18.4 points and 9.6 rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: The Nuggets figured out how to stop Detroit's pick-and-roll in the third quarter. The Pistons shot 56 percent in the first half but only 32 percent in the third quarter.

BAD MOVE: Smith was on fire, but in his effort to hit 10 3-pointers for the third time in his career he shot 12 of them in the fourth quarter, many of them after the game was well in hand. His last one came with 1.5 seconds left.

ROOKIE WATCH: The Pistons' Monroe and Gary Forbes of Denver both started for their teams and were solid. Forbes hit two early 3-pointers to help the Nuggets grab the early lead. He finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Monroe had eight points and six rebounds.

NOTABLE: The Nuggets have won six straight at home and have beaten their last two visitors by a combined 70 points.
