Trail Blazers-Bobcats Preview

For seven years, Gerald Wallace was the face of the Charlotte Bobcats, leading them to their first playoff appearance and earning the only All-Star nod in team history.

Wallace was working on getting the Bobcats back to the postseason before being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers two weeks ago. He'll make what should be an emotional return to Charlotte on Friday night as the Trail Blazers go for a fifth straight victory.

The Bobcats (26-38) traded Wallace, the last original member of the expansion team, to Portland on Feb. 24 for center Joel Przybilla, reserve forward Dante Cunningham, center Sean Marks and a pair of conditional first-round draft picks. The move was made to shed salary, with owner Michael Jordan saying he loved the financial flexibility the deal would bring, but it was not well received by some fans.

Wallace was also angered by the trade, calling it a "stab in the back."

An All-Star last season while leading Charlotte to the playoffs, Wallace said he was told by coach Paul Silas hours before the trade deadline that he wouldn't be dealt and "then I get home and bam, I'm traded."

Wallace, who was selected by the Bobcats in the 2004 expansion draft and became a fan favorite in Charlotte, envisioned retiring as a Bobcat. He wasn't pleased about how the situation was handled by general manager Rod Higgins, saying "I don't even want to comment on that guy."

"To feel like you're not wanted anymore or you're not good enough for the franchise anymore it's a slap in the face," Wallace said. "That was a hurtful feeling for me."

Wallace had his best game with his new team in Tuesday's 105-96 win over Miami, scoring 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting.

"I love him. He's a guy that brings it. He's a very competitive player, mentally tough," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. "In this league there are men and there are boys. Gerald is a man."

His worst performance with the Trail Blazers (37-27) came against his former team Saturday, when he finished with seven points and shot 1 of 7.

Despite Wallace's struggles, Portland had little trouble taking care of the Bobcats, beating them 93-69 for their fourth straight win in the series. LaMarcus Aldridge had 26 points in that game, and scored 26 again against the Heat.

With Tuesday's victory, the Trail Blazers extended their road winning streak to seven games, their longest since reeling off nine in a row away from Portland from March 20-April 10, 1991.

The Blazers have won four straight overall, and are 11-3 since Feb. 5.

Charlotte is heading in the opposite direction, and is struggling to stay competitive since trading Wallace.

After beating Sacramento 110-98 in its first game following the trade, Charlotte has lost a season-worst six in a row. The offense is struggling mightily, averaging just 81.7 points during the skid.

Despite this rough stretch, the Bobcats are still just one game back of Indiana for the Eastern Conference's final playoff berth.

Charlotte has been hit hard by injuries, and played without top scorer Stephen Jackson (hamstring), sixth man Tyrus Thomas (knee surgery), reserve guard Matt Carroll (ankle) and Przybilla (knee) in Wednesday's 101-84 loss to Chicago.

"I told them if they play that way and we get our full complement of guys, then I like our chances," Silas said.

Silas could have Jackson and Thomas, who both sat out last week in Portland, back for this game.

Gerald Henderson, Wallace's replacement in Charlotte's starting lineup, had 20 points Wednesday, and is starting to look more comfortable with his new role. Henderson is averaging 18.7 points on 56.5 percent shooting in his last three games after averaging 6.7 points on 25.0 percent shooting in his previous three.

Jackson helps Bobcats beat Wallace, Blazers 97-92

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Gerald Wallace was honored with a video tribute, two standing ovations and numerous chants of his name in his first game back in Charlotte since last month's jolting trade.

But it was his best friend on his old club that got the better of him when it mattered most.

Stephen Jackson scored 18 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead three-point play on a drive around Wallace in the final minute, and the Bobcats beat the Portland Trail Blazers 97-92 on Friday night to spoil Wallace's emotional return.

In his first game back from a hamstring injury, Jackson finished one point shy of Wallace's team record for points in a quarter as Charlotte snapped a six-game losing streak.

"We sat back and let him get going and all of a sudden he found his groove," Wallace said of Jackson. "I've seen him in that zone plenty of times."

Wallace, the last original member of the seven-year-old Bobcats and their only All-Star, was traded last month for role players and draft picks, a move owner Michael Jordan said would give them "flexibility" to rebuild the roster in the next few years.

Wallace, who had 13 points and nine rebounds, fouled Jackson on his twisting layup to put Charlotte ahead to stay with 48 seconds left. Wallace later fouled out.

"It's a lot of love there. We both want to win, but the respect is unbelievable," said Jackson, who also had 10 rebounds. "I love him to death and I wish him the best, but we needed this game more than they did."

Wesley Matthews scored 20 points for the Blazers, but missed one of two free throws with 5.6 seconds left and Portland trailing by two. Patty Mills then missed two more free throws and Andre Miller also had a key turnover in the final minute as Portland's four-game winning streak was snapped.

"Of course Jackson got hot, but we play much better than that," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said.

D.J. Augustin and D.J. White each scored 16 points for the Bobcats and went 4 of 4 from the line in the final 5 seconds.

The victory moved Charlotte into a tie with slumping Indiana for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and snapped Portland's seven-game road winning streak on an emotional night.

"It was a challenge," Wallace said.

A day after saying the Feb. 24 trade was a "stab in the back," he got to be Charlotte's fan favorite for one more night.

Before the national anthem, the Bobcats played a short video of highlight clips and a picture of Wallace in his 2010 All-Star uniform. It finished with the words "Thank You" before the team's public address announcer did his signature introduction of "G-G-G-Gerald Wallace," with his last name echoing as the crowd cheered and Wallace waved.

"I felt appreciated," he said.

While one fan held a sign reading "We love you Gerald!", Jordan was not in his courtside seat for the tribute, arriving after the lineups were announced a few minutes later.

Wallace, who is not starting for Portland, received another loud ovation when he checked in midway through the first quarter. Jackson even clapped on the court.

"I heard the standing ovation, the cheer. It was heartwarming," Wallace said. "I think they miss me as much as I miss them."

Saying he was worried about "letting my emotions get the best of me," Wallace got off to a slow start before hitting consecutive 3-pointers late in the third quarter as Portland took a 70-64 lead.

But then Jackson got going with a little preening early in the fourth quarter after a rough start following a three-game absence.

After rebounding his 12th missed shot in 15 attempts, Jackson muscled the ball in and was fouled. He then flexed and pointed to his biceps.

That started a stretch of five straight baskets, including two 3-pointers as Charlotte built a 86-77 lead with under 6 minutes to play.

Portland rallied behind a thunderous dunk by Wallace, but the demonstrative Jackson was putting on his imaginary title belt at the end.

"They will be real dangerous in the playoffs and I can't wait to see him play," Jackson said of Wallace's Blazers. "If we don't make it, I guarantee I'll go to one of their games."

Notes: Wallace scored 19 points in the third quarter against Sacramento last season. ... Struggling Bobcats F Boris Diaw didn't play in the fourth quarter. ... Charlotte F Tyrus Thomas had two points and six rebounds in 24 minutes in his first game back from knee surgery. ... C Joel Przybilla, acquired from Charlotte in the Wallace trade, missed his second straight game with pain in his surgically-repaired right knee and could miss another week. ... Former Bobcats coach and GM Bernie Bickerstaff said he's "having a ball" as an assistant under McMillan. ... A moment of silence was held before the game for the victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami.

THE FACTS: Stephen Jackson scored 18 of his game-best 29 points in the fourth quarter as the Charlotte Bobcats rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 97-92 and snap its six-game losing streak. Gerald Wallace scored 13 points for the Trail Blazers in his return to Charlotte and Wesley Matthews added 20.

QUOTABLE: "That's my role out there. I've got to be the scorer and make plays. I've got to take control in the fourth quarter and i was just thankful I could do that tonight. Every game counts. We can't relax. It felt good to be out there."

THE STAT: Free throws. Wesley Matthews snapped his streak of 21 consecutive free throws with 5.6 seconds left in the game missing the first of two which could have tied the ballgame at 93. The Trail Blazers went 3-for-7 from the line in the final quarter. For the game Portland, who ranks third in the NBA, was 9-for-16 from the line while Charlotte was 22-for-26.

TURNING POINT: Jack for Three. Stephen Jackson drained back-to-back threes for the Bobcats with the game knotted at 72 to take their first lead since the opening possession of the second half. Those two threes came in the middle of a 14-2 run to open the fourth quarter in which he scored 11 points.

HOT: Stephen Jackson. The Bobcats forward had been sidelined with a strained left hamstring, but came to play Friday night. Jackson scored 18 points in the fourth quarter and scored a game-high 29 points. He went 7-for-11 in the final quarter and connected on a pair of three pointers while adding two rebounds and an assist. The Bobcats were 12-for-19 from the floor in the fourth and went 7-for-8 at the line.

NOT: LaMarcus Aldridge. The Portland center shot 6-for-17 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the charity stripe Friday night and scored just 15 points on the night. Aldridge had scored at least 20 in each of previous four games and had averaged 24.0 in that span.

INSIDE THE ARENA: NASCAR drive Denny Hamlin and Bobcats team owner Michael Jordan were both seated courtside. The Bobcats honored Gerald Wallace who was traded to Portland on February 24 with a video tribute prior to the game which was greeted with a standing ovation from the crowd at Time Warner Cable Arena.

GOOD MOVE: Using your bench. Charlotte coach Paul Silas went to the bench with confidence and was rewarded. Dante Cunningham, acquired from Portland in the Gerald Wallace trade, scored 11 points while fellow newcomer DJ White, acquired from Oklahoma City in the Nazr Mohammed deal, scored a career-best 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds as well. The pair combined to shoot 11-for-15 from the floor in 48 minutes of actions.

NOTABLE: DJ White had a career-high 16 points in the win for Charlotte and is averaging 11.6 in his last five games. Gerald Henderson has scored in double figures in each of the last four games and is averaging 17.0 in that span. Stephen Jackson has scored 20 or more in 13 of his last 20 games with five games of 30 or more points. Portland has its NBA-best seven-game road win streak snapped Friday night. The Trail Blazers lost for just the second time this year when shooting better than an opponent. Gerald Wallace scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds in his return to Charlotte after being traded to the Trail Blazers on February 24.
