Wizards-Pistons Preview

Last week, the Detroit Pistons insisted a postseason berth was still an attainable goal. Consecutive defeats have made that task even more difficult.

The Pistons will try to boost their faint chances while adding to the Washington Wizards' road struggles Sunday night.

Despite continuing drama surrounding the club after a walkout protesting their coach late last month, forward Charlie Villanueva said Tuesday that a key decision was made about the team's direction for the remainder of 2010-11.

"Are we going to have a terrible season or are we all going to come together and make a push? The guys decided we're going to make a push," he said.

Instead, the Pistons (22-41) lost 92-90 to Milwaukee later that night, followed Wednesday by a 116-105 defeat to Minnesota, which is last in the Western Conference.

The Pistons are 5 1/2 games behind eighth-place Indiana in the Eastern Conference.

"As a team, I think we got a little stagnant," said center Greg Monroe, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds against the Timberwolves.

Austin Daye had a career-high 22 points and Richard Hamilton scored 11 in his first home game since Jan. 8. After being benched for all but one game over the previous six weeks, Hamilton was one of several players to skip at least part of the Pistons' shootaround before a 16-point loss in Philadelphia on Feb. 25.

Hamilton has played in back-to-back games since he and coach John Kuester said Monday they had a talk that improved their relationship. The veteran swingman has averaged 10.5 points on 31.0 percent shooting in those contests, but Tracy McGrady has been benched for the past four games.

Tayshaun Prince has also missed four games with an ailing back. The Wizards, meanwhile, had to deal with the absences of starters Nick Young (flu) and Josh Howard (pulled left hamstring) before Saturday's game against Minnesota.

Though dealing with his own illness, rookie Trevor Booker had three dunks on successive possessions in the fourth quarter to spur Washington to a 103-96 victory, snapping a seven-game slide. Andray Blatche had 20 points for the second straight game to lead five players in double figures.

"We didn't know if we were even going to be able to play him," coach Flip Saunders said of Booker. "It got to the point that we just needed some energy, maybe we could put him in and get a couple of minutes. He started going and I was afraid of taking him out because I didn't know if we'd be able to get him back."

Blatche and JaVale McGee each scored 20 points in Detroit on Nov. 21, but the Pistons pulled out a 115-110 overtime victory. Hamilton had 12 of his team-best 27 points in the extra session and Villanueva contributed 25 points and 11 rebounds in the seventh consecutive win over Washington (16-45).

The Pistons have also prevailed in six consecutive home matchups with the Wizards, who are an NBA-worst 1-28 on the road.

Saunders is expected to miss Sunday's game, which comes two days after the death of his mother, Kay.

Pistons beat Wizards 113-102

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) As difficult a season as the Detroit Pistons are having, they've cornered the market on one commodity: tall players who can shoot from the perimeter.

Charlie Villanueva scored all 16 of his points in the second quarter, and Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye added some big shots in the second half to help the Pistons beat the Washington Wizards 113-102 on Sunday night.

The 6-foot-11 Villanueva made three 3-pointers, then added a conventional three-point play that started a 10-0 run that put Detroit ahead 60-49 shortly before halftime. The 6-foot-9 Prince then added 10 points in the third quarter and the 6-foot-11 Daye scored seven in the fourth as the Wizards struggled to match up.

"I just tried to come off the bench and provide the team with a spark," Villanueva said. "My teammates did a great job of finding me and were moving the ball great."

Prince, who has been bothered by back problems, finished with 20 points in his first appearance in five games.

John Wall had 24 points and seven assists for the Wizards, who dropped to 1-29 on the road. Detroit has won eight straight over Washington.

The Wizards (16-46) went on a 13-5 run early in the fourth quarter, cutting Detroit's lead to three with 6:55 remaining, but Washington lost track of Greg Monroe near the basket, and the rookie's three-point play made it 92-86.

Wizards coach Flip Saunders missed the game, as expected, two days after the death of his mother. Randy Wittman ran the team in his place.

"We didn't get any stops down the stretch tonight is what it boiled down to," Wittman said. "They hurt us with Tayshaun and (Rodney) Stuckey pick-and-roll and kind of hurt us every which way. Daye hit some 3s, they got some offensive rebounds and overall down the stretch you have to get some stops and we didn't tonight."

Washington was without forward Rashard Lewis, who was out with a sore right knee, and forward Josh Howard, who missed the game because of a strained left hamstring.

Villanueva has been content to stay on the perimeter for much of the season. He has made a career-high 105 shots from 3-point range and is shooting 38 percent from long distance. Daye, in his second season, is shooting 42 percent on 3-pointers. He made two Sunday, including one with 2:16 to play that made it 105-94.

Prince scored six of Detroit's points in a row toward the end of the third, the last two on a 16-footer that made it 80-71.

"I felt slow in the first quarter, because it was tough to get loose, but it felt better the second time I went into the game," Prince said. "The biggest problem I've had is being able to push off with the hip, but there wasn't any pain tonight. I had some stiffness, but I'll get that treated so I'm not too sore in the morning."

Stuckey had 19 points and nine assists for the Pistons (23-41), who went 12 of 18 in the fourth quarter and shot 52 percent for the game.

"I thought we made a conscious effort in our driving and kicking, and guys were sharing the basketball and were very unselfish," Detroit coach John Kuester said.

Andray Blatche and Nick Young scored 21 points apiece for the Wizards. Jordan Crawford, who is from Detroit, scored seven points.

"I had a lot of people in the crowd and I just wanted to play," Crawford said. "I'm here in Washington and I'm glad to be given the opportunity to play here, and I want to be here for a while."

Detroit lost to Minnesota on Wednesday night for the Timberwolves' fifth road win of the season, but the Pistons were able to prevent the Wizards from earning a rare victory away from home. Washington beat Minnesota at home Saturday night, but the Wizards have won back-to-back games only once all season.

Seven Pistons finished in double figures. Monroe and Daye scored 12 points apiece, and Ben Gordon and Richard Hamilton added 10 each.

JaVale McGee scored 12 points for Washington, and Trevor Booker added 10.

Notes: Detroit's Ben Wallace remained out following the death of his brother last weekend, and Tracy McGrady, who has been benched, sat out for a fifth straight game. ... Washington attempted 34 free throws to Detroit's 14.

Wizards-Pistons notebook

THE FACTS: Forward Tayshaun Prince, who had missed the previous four games with a back injury, led seven Detroit Pistons in double figures with 20 points as they defeated the Washington Wizards 113-102 on Sunday. Point guard Rodney Stuckey engineered the Pistons' attack with 19 points, a team-high nine assists and seven rebounds.

Washington point guard John Wall had 24 points and seven assists but his team fell to 1-29 on the road. The Wizards were coached by assistant Randy Wittman while head coach Flip Saunders flew to Ohio to attend his mother's funeral.

QUOTABLE: "I'm just pushing the ball. I love to play fast. I think that's when we're at our best."

THE STAT: 44-20. Washington's top four bench players Sunday were all rookies and their inexperience showed. The Pistons' reserves outscored them 44-20. Detroit's bench also contributed 18 rebounds, lifting its club to a 45-29 edge in that department.

TURNING POINT: The Pistons reeled off 10 unanswered points late in the first half after Nick Young pulled the Wizards within one, 50-49, on a 3-pointer. That outburst featured two Charlie Villanueva layups, a Prince dunk and a tap-in by Stuckey. Detroit led throughout the second half.

QUOTABLE II: "It was tough getting loose but about the second quarter I started to feel better when I came in for the second time. Whenever you're coming back from an injury, the first game you're kind of nervous. You try to push through to see how much you can really go because practice is not the same thing."

HOT: Villanueva lit up Wizards rookie forward Trevor Booker while scoring 16 second-quarter points. Villanueva made three 3-pointers during the quarter while reaching double figures for the fifth consecutive game.

NOT: Washington's JaVale McGee got posterized on a first-quarter dunk by Prince but his biggest embarrassment was his lack of rebounds. McGee, who was averaging 7.7 rebounds, grabbed just two in 30 minutes. All but one of the Pistons who played had at least as many rebounds as Washington's 7-foot center.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Following a stint at shooting guard, Stuckey was restored as the starting point guard four games ago. He has put up impressive all-around stats during that span, averaging 20.8 points, 8.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds.

ROOKIE WATCH: Wall shot 6-for-15 from the field but he made frequent trips to the free throw line, converting 12 of 13 foul shots. He also had four turnovers but only one after halftime.

NOTABLE: Tracy McGrady did not play for the fifth consecutive game, even though he was healthy. ... Wizards starting forward Rashard Lewis missed the game with a sore right knee. The injury will likely require arthroscopic surgery after the season. Josh Howard was sidelined by a hamstring injury. ... The Pistons had 29 assists, one shy of their season high.
