Raptors-Nets Preview

LONDON (AP) After spending just one day in his new apartment, New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams embarked on a trans-Atlantic trip to play a couple of home games in Britain.

And he's feeling the effects.

"I haven't had anytime to just sit down somewhere and relax," Williams said Wednesday, a week after being traded from the Utah Jazz and two days before the first regular-season NBA games to be played in Europe.

"I haven't had much time, been in my place for one day," Williams said. "I've done a lot of traveling over the last six days."

On Friday, Williams will take the court with his new teammates from the Nets (17-43), this time against the Toronto Raptors (17-44) at London's O2 Arena. The teams will play again Saturday night.

"There's a lot of young talent on this team. It is a young team," Williams said. "The last 20 games will help us get used to each other and I think things will turn around for next year."

Williams' impact has already been felt by his new teammates, and his home debut on Monday in Newark looked to be a big step in the right direction.

Williams had 13 points and a season-high 18 assists, including five in rallying New Jersey from a seven-point deficit late in the fourth quarter of New Jersey's 104-103 overtime loss to the Phoenix Suns.

"He's great," shooting guard Sasha Vujacic said of his new teammate. "Obviously we'll need some time to get used to each other - it's not going to happen over night - but just to have him, to have someone who knows how to play point guard ... it's just great addition to us and we are building a team for the future."

The Nets arrived in London on Tuesday morning, taking an overnight flight after the loss to the Suns.

For Vujacic, a Slovene drafted by Los Angeles Lakers in 2004, the trip may not be all that exotic, but it still takes some getting over.

"Honestly, travel is terrible. It takes a lot out of you," Vujacic said. "It takes your legs away, especially for the shooters. Sometimes it's very tricky, but we have to learn how to live with it."

The Raptors landed Wednesday morning, but already had their first practice at the O2 in the afternoon.

"The idea for the first day is just to go up and down a little bit, get the blood flowing a little bit and try to get them on the correct sleep pattern," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "We'll try to get as much rest as we can today."

Raptors guard Jose Calderon of Spain also is used to the overseas flights, but that doesn't make it any easier for him to prepare for big games.

"Always the first day, it's kind of tough when you arrive in Europe after the flight," said Calderon, who scored a season-high 22 points in Toronto's 96-90 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Tuesday. "But we'll be OK. ... We just got to practice a little bit, sweat, and be ready for tomorrow. Get a good night's sleep, and from there we'll be ready for Friday."

Despite the travel and fatigue issues, Vujacic still believes it is possible that an NBA franchise could be based in Europe one day.

"I think it's about time," said Vujacic, who is expecting friends and family from all over the Europe to be at the games. "It's just a matter of time when it's going to happen. The game is so interesting. It's so easy to fall in love with it."

Raptors center Andrea Bargnani, who is from Italy, is less convinced.

"I don't think it's going to happen. The flight today was long, the jet lag is tough," Bargnani said. "I hope it's not going to happen. It's more fun to come over here once a year like this, but to come here often with our schedule is pretty tough."

The NBA has not set a timeline of putting a permanent team in Europe, but Commissioner David Stern did come through after saying for years that he wanted regular-season games in London before the 2012 Olympics in the city.

For Williams, that likely means another trip to London next July as a member of the U.S. national team.

"I plan to be back over here for the Olympics," Williams said. "Hopefully get my second gold medal."

Nets beat Raptors 116-103 in Europe's 1st NBA game

LONDON (AP) The New Jersey Nets are still far away from their Russian owner's goal of making the team a global brand and NBA champion. But for now, at least, they're the league's most successful team in games played in Europe.

Brook Lopez scored 25 points and New Jersey ended a six-game losing streak with a 116-103 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Friday in the first regular-season game on the continent.

Kris Humphries had 18 points and 17 rebounds and Deron Williams earned his first win since being acquired from the Utah Jazz last week, adding 16 points and 11 assists.

"Happy with my first win as a Net," said the All-Star guard, who played despite injuries to both hands - a strained right wrist and bruised left hand. "We had a lot of energy today. We were all a little worried about how the trip would affect us, fatigue would set in. But we had a lot of energy. We had definitely some bright spots, some guys played great for us tonight."

Perhaps the brightest spot came from the bench.

Toronto led 81-78 at the end of the third quarter, but Jordan Farmar hit two straight 3-pointers to start the fourth, and Sundiata Gaines added seven points in a decisive 20-6 run sparked by the Nets reserves.

"They were huge for us in the second half," Lopez said. "They gave us a huge lift, pretty much blew open the game for us."

Lopez and Williams did the rest, combining for 11 points after coming back on to make sure Toronto never pulled closer than five.

DeMar DeRozan led Toronto (17-45) with 30 points and Andrea Bargnani added 23.

Williams had his fourth straight double-double since joining the team, and he and Lopez showed signs they can turn into the type of formidable duo the franchise hoped for.

"Our chemistry grows every game by the boatload," Lopez said.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov said before the game that he plans to sit down with Williams in London and get the guard to commit to a long-term future with the club, saying the two share a common goal of being "No. 1." The two have only had a brief opportunity to chat so far, after a loss in San Antonio last week.

"Mr. Prokhorov met me in San Antonio and we talked for a couple of minutes, but in that short couple of minutes he definitely got me excited also about the move and the future of this franchise," Williams said. "I'm sure we'll have more chances to sit down and talk and get to know each other."

The Nets and Raptors will face each other again at the O2 on Saturday, as the NBA decided to bring regular-season games to Europe for the first time as part of its push to increase its fan base on the continent. The O2 has hosted preseason games for the last four years.

The attendance for Friday's game was an announced sellout of 18,689, but there were some empty seats.

"I loved the crowd," said Bargnani, who was the highest-scoring European player on the night. "I really felt the excitement. I was nervous in the first half. I think it's going to be better tomorrow."

The unusual venue meant the public announcer had to do some extra work, explaining some of the basic rules every now and then to the British crowd - like pointing out that a player fouled while shooting gets two free throws.

And with crowd support split between the two teams - despite the Nets being listed as the home team - players had the rare experience of being booed by rival fans before every free throw, and then cheered by their own supporters if the shot was good.

While the game featured two teams with losing records and lacked a nailbiting finish, there were plenty of highlights. Lopez provided two of the biggest in the first half, first driving through the lane for a one-handed dunk to cut Toronto's lead to 39-34, and then jumping over Leandro Barbosa for an alley-oop slam on an assist from Williams to give his team a 42-41 lead.

"These games are great for global basketball, great for the NBA," said Williams, who scored all but two of his 16 points in the second half. "And I thought the crowd tonight was great, they cheered for both teams pretty equally. When both teams did something good out there, they liked it. And I hope this is just the start of many, many more games."

Nets-Raptors notebook

THE FACTS: Brook Lopez scored 25 points to lead the Nets to an historic 116-103 win Friday night at London's 02 Arena, the NBA's first regular season game played in Europe. The win also ended a six-game losing streak for the Nets. Deron Williams added 16 points and 11 assists, the All-Star guard's fourth straight double-double since joining the Nets in a trade last week.

DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 30 points and Andrea Bargnani added 23 for the Raptors, who got a game-high 12 assists from Jose Calderon and a solid night (12 points and eight rebounds) off the bench from Ed Davis.

QUOTABLE: "These games are great for global basketball, great for the NBA. And I thought the crowd tonight was great, they cheered for both teams pretty equally. When both teams did something good out there, they liked it. And I hope this is just the start of many, many more games."

THE STAT: 24-37. The Nets owned the paint on both ends of the floor thanks to the shooting work of their big men. Kris Humphries (18 points on 8-for-14 shooting, 17 rebounds and four blocks) and Damion James (15 points on 5-for-6 shooting and seven rebounds) made big contributions, and Lopez made 11 of his 17 shots from the floor. He only had two rebounds, but he did block shots.

TURNING POINT: Nets reserves Jordan Farmar and Sundiata Gaines helped spark a 20-6 run to start the fourth quarter that turned the game in their team's favor for good. Farmar knocked down two straight 3-pointers and Gaines, playing because Anthony Morrow suffered a first half concussion and did not return, chipped in with seven points and two assists. When the starters returned, they stretched it out even more as Lopez and Williams combined for 11 points to put the game out of reach for good.

QUOTABLE II: "We had a lot of energy today. We were all a little worried about how the trip would affect us, fatigue would set in. But we had a lot of energy. We had definitely some bright spots, some guys played great for us tonight."

HOT: Williams scored just two points before halftime but cranked things up in the second half, showing why the Nets traded away so much to get him and why he is arguably the best point guard in the league. The shot opportunities he creates for himself and others is why the Raptors could not slow the Nets down in after halftime.

NOT: Raptors forward James Johnson had plenty of opportunities and couldn't cash in on the offensive end, making just one of his eight shots from the floor. He played just 20 minutes and finished the game with a forgettable two points and five rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: When Morrow went down before halftime, Nets coach Avery Johnson pushed the right button with Gaines, who knows a thing or two about filling in the blanks on a Deron Williams-led backcourt, having done the same last season in Utah. His energy and effectiveness attacking the Raptors' defense at the start of the fourth quarter along with Farmar was crucial.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Whatever Williams traded in wins by coming to the Nets he has more than made up for with his fantasy stock. Even with his shooting stroke missing in action (.373 from the floor in his last five games), he's averaging 13.8 assists during the same stretch, which includes his last outing with the Jazz before the trade deadline and his four games since joining the Nets.

ROOKIE WATCH: James, the Nets' rookie, not only played the man opposite him Friday night, he outplayed his season profile (3.8 points and 3.2 rebounds) by a wide margin. His versatility, ability to defend three positions, and his energy will continue to work in his favor.

NOTABLE: The Nets have already announced that Morrow will not play in Saturday after suffering that slight concussion. ... With his four-game assist total with the Nets at 58, Williams set the record for the most assists by a player in his first four games with a team in NBA history. Guy Rodgers was the previous record holder; Rodgers had 53 assists in his first four games with the Bulls.

UP NEXT: For these two teams it's a Saturday afternoon (back home) rematch before another 02 Arena crowd that will watch just the second NBA regular season game played on European soil.
