Timberwolves-76ers Preview

The Philadelphia 76ers have played well at home against some of the Western Conference's top teams. A visit from the conference's worst club would seem like a break, but the Minnesota Timberwolves have been playing better on the road lately.

Philadelphia looks for its fourth straight home win over the Timberwolves on Friday night and first sweep of this season series in five years.

Already with seven more home victories this season (19) than in 2009-10, Philadelphia is 18-6 at the Wells Fargo Center since Nov. 17 with a 7-3 mark against the West, including wins over San Antonio, Denver, New Orleans and Portland.

Coach Doug Collins' team had a chance to knock off visiting Dallas on Tuesday, trailing by three with less than a minute to go, but lost 101-93 as its season-high four-game winning streak was snapped. Philadelphia (30-30), though, remains in seventh place in the East, 1 1/2 games back of sixth-place New York.

"We played toe-to-toe with one of the best, one of the hottest teams in the league," Collins said of the Mavericks, who have won 17 of 18 and are second in the West. "I'm proud of them for that. Our guys are doing this for the first time. They've been at it for a while, they've been here a lot of times. That showed tonight."

The 76ers have won three in a row at home versus Minnesota since Dec. 3, 2006, and posted a 119-97 victory in the Timberwolves' last visit Feb. 9, 2010. Coach Kurt Rambis' team, however, has won three of five on the road after opening 2-23 on opponents' home courts.

Led by 20 points and 20 rebounds from Kevin Love, Minnesota (15-47) opened its three-game trip Wednesday with a 116-105 victory over Detroit.

Anthony Randolph had 19 points and 10 boards, Lazar Hayward scored 16 and Anthony Tolliver added 13 for a Timberwolves bench which had a season-high 61 points.

"I was really happy with our effort and energy tonight," Rambis said. "I thought our second unit played very well together, which helped us a lot."

Philadelphia's reserves are scoring a league-best 39.9 points per game despite being held to 29 on Tuesday.

While Minnesota's play has been inconsistent this season, Rambis can count on Love for a double-double every night. The All-Star forward, averaging a team-high 20.9 points and a league-leading 15.5 rebounds, tops the NBA with 57 double-doubles and has recorded 48 straight - the longest such streak since Moses Malone's 51-game run in 1978-79.

Love had 16 points and 13 rebounds in a 107-87 home loss to Philadelphia on Feb. 12.

Minnesota second-leading scorer Michael Beasley missed that matchup with a sprained ankle and has been inconsistent since returning, scoring more than 20 points in two games but averaging 10.8 on 30.0 percent shooting in the other four.

Thaddeus Young had 18 points off the bench in the last meeting to lead seven players in double figures for Philadelphia, which shot 51.3 percent.

The 76ers last swept Minnesota in 2005-06 when they won both games by a total of three points.

Iguodala triple-double helps 76ers down T'Wolves

PHILADELPHIA (AP) When the final buzzer sounded, Andre Iguodala was swarmed by his teammates. The adoration was more than well-deserved.

Iguodala had 22 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds for his second triple-double of the season, and the Philadelphia 76ers overcame another stellar effort from Kevin Love for a 111-100 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.

"Dre was spectacular," Sixers coach Doug Collins said simply.

Elton Brand scored 21 points and Thaddeus Young added 16 for the Sixers, who climbed back above .500 at 31-30. They currently hold the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Lou Williams and Jodie Meeks added 12 points each while Evan Turner had 10.

It was Iguodala who stole the spotlight.

"I was happy with the triple-double, but it was more important that we got the win," said Iguodala, who now has six career triple-doubles. "We needed the win. Every win from here on out is important for us."

The Timberwolves got 21 points and 23 rebounds from Kevin Love, the 10th time he's had a 20-20 game this season. It was the 49th straight double-double for the All-Star forward and just two shy of tying Moses Malone's 51-game streak set in 1978-79.

Love leads the league with 58 double-doubles.

"It's amazing and it's becoming mundane," Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis said of Love. "He just keeps doing it over and over."

The Timberwolves, who fell to 15-48 and 5-26 on the road, got a slight scare with 6:52 remaining in the third when Love collided with Brand and remained down on the floor holding his leg. After a few minutes, Love limped to the bench.

He didn't miss any action and returned to the game following the timeout.

"I hurt my leg the other night against Detroit," Love said. "I took a hard spill and banged my knee a little. But I was able to work it out."

Rookie Nikola Pekovic, in just his fifth career start, contributed 16 points, Michael Beasley added 15 and Luke Ridnour had 10 assists for Minnesota. Anthony Randolph chipped in 12 points while Lazar Hayward had 11.

Brand scored 17 of his points in the first half and seemed to be fine with a splint on his right hand. Brand dislocated his right pinky finger last Sunday in a victory at Cleveland and has needed the finger to be popped back into place at least two times over the past five days.

"I feel good," Brand said. "I was more worried about getting my fourth foul than anything."

The Sixers led 89-80 early in the fourth before the Timberwolves scored six straight - two baskets from Love and a layup by Beasley - to pull within 89-86 with 8:36 remaining. Hayward tied the game at 91 on a deep 3-pointer with 7:25 left and a buzz could be heard through the crowd at the Wells Fargo Center. But the Sixers came right back with an 8-0 spurt - four points by Iguodala - for a 99-91 advantage.

Minnesota refused to go away quietly and closed within 101-100 when Wayne Ellington hit a tough 18-foot jumper with 2:47 left. Brand connected on consecutive short jumpers for a 105-100 lead with 1:02 remaining and the Sixers scored the final 10 points of the game. Ridnour missed a shot with 15 seconds left and the fans erupted when Iguodala grabbed his 10th rebound.

"Andre was amazing," Brand said. "He did a great job and played sound in every area. He helped carry us."

Notes: Wesley Johnson was a late subtraction from Minnesota's starting lineup with gastroenteritis. Wayne Ellington got the start at guard instead. ... C Darko Milicic (family matter) and G Sebastian Telfair (back) also missed the game for the Timberwolves. ... The Sixers improved to 20-10 at home. ... Wolves-Sixers notebook

THE FACTS: Andre Iguodala recorded his second triple-double this season and led the 76ers with 22 points in their riveting 111-100 victory over the feisty Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday. Elton Brand scored 21 points while Thaddeus Young was terrific off the bench with 16 points and eight rebounds. The Sixers improved to 31-30 but it was far from easy against Minnesota, which trailed 101-100 late in the game. Philadelphia responded with the final 10 points to pull away.

Kevin Love had 21 points and 23 rebounds for the Timberwolves, his 10th 20-20 performance of the season. It was Love's 49th straight double-double, and he needs just two more to tie Moses Malone's 51 consecutive double-doubles during the 1978-79 season. Nikola Pekovic was impressive at center with 16 points in 14 minutes.

QUOTABLE: "We found a way to dig it out. This was another one of those wins where we would have lost earlier in the year."

THE STAT: The Sixers made 19 free throws while Minnesota attempted only 10.

TURNING POINT: After the Timberwolves cut the lead to 101-100, Brand knocked down consecutive jumpers. The Sixers put the game away from there.

HOT: Brand was 10-for-16 from the field, including some difficult jumpers.

NOT: Michael Beasley scored 15 points, but shot 6-for-15. Beasley seemed to rely on the jumper a little bit too much.

QUOTABLE II: "I tried to establish myself early in passing the ball and rebounding. I wasn't trying for a triple-double. I'm happy that we won the game."

FANTASY S.POTLIGHT: Iguodala displayed a fabulous all-around game once again with 22 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. He played a good bit of point forward and consistently made good decisions.

INSIDE THE ARENA: There wasn't much buzz inside the Wells Fargo Center for the Timberwolves' visit. Still, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette attended the game along with defensemen Chris Pronger and Sean O'Donnell.

QUOTABLE III: "The best thing about the NBA is there's another game tomorrow. There's another chance for us to help turn it around."

GOOD MOVE: Sixers coach Doug Collins kept his starters fresh and did a great job of spreading minutes around to his bench. This bench leads the league in scoring and it had 45 points against Minnesota.

BAD MOVE: Jonny Flynn probably should have played more minutes. After all, he was coming off a career-high 14-assist performance at Detroit. But Flynn only played 16 minutes and had six points and four assists.

ROOKIE WATCH: Evan Turner, the Sixers' No. 2 overall pick from Ohio State, was steady with 10 points. Minnesota rookie guard Wesley Johnson didn't play due to gastroenteritis. Pekovic had 16 points while Lazar Hayward added 11 points and six rebounds.

NOTABLE: The Sixers had six players score in double figures, including three off the bench. It's the 17th time the Sixers have had at least six players scored 10 or more points and the 14th time at least three reserves have scored in double figures.
