Cavaliers-Knicks Preview

The Cavaliers have shocked the New York Knicks twice this season in Cleveland, including an impressive win just a week ago in the road debut of new Knicks Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups.

Both teams could look considerably different when they meet Friday at Madison Square Garden.

Billups is doubtful and Cleveland's Antawn Jamison - who helped spearhead last week's victory - is out, but the Cavaliers will likely have Baron Davis on the floor for the first time as they look for an 11th consecutive win against the Knicks.

Given the state of the two franchises over the past few seasons, it wasn't that surprising Cleveland came into 2010-11 with an eight-game winning streak versus New York (31-28).

What is surprising is that it's continued. The Cavaliers (11-49) picked up their lone victory in a 37-game stretch by beating the Knicks 109-102 in overtime Dec. 18, then stunned them again last Friday with a 115-109 win despite Amare Stoudemire, Anthony and Billups combining for 84 points.

New York bounced back by winning twice in a stretch of three games in four days. After splitting games at Miami and Orlando - Billups bruised his quadriceps in a loss to the Magic - the Knicks played without their new point guard Wednesday against New Orleans, but shot 54.5 percent in a 107-88 victory.

Toney Douglas had 24 points in Billups' place.

"When you have players like myself and Carmelo who demand so much attention, the game seems to open up for guys like (Douglas), so he took advantage of it," said Stoudemire, who also finished with 24.

Douglas has averaged just 4.5 points and shot 21.1 percent in the two losses to Cleveland, but New York might need him to step up again Friday. Billups sat out Thursday's practice and is doubtful to face the Cavaliers.

Two days after Jamison's 28 points and 13 rebounds sparked the victory over the Knicks, Cleveland's leading scorer broke his left pinky. He likely won't play again this season.

The Cavaliers had a particularly difficult task in their first game without Jamison. They shot 39.6 percent - their worst effort since late January - in a 109-99 loss Wednesday to league-best San Antonio.

One bright spot was Samardo Samuels, who replaced Jamison and made his first pro start. The undrafted rookie responded with season highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds.

"I know every day that I come in, I'm going to work hard and I know my teammates are doing the same," Samuels said. "That's what I'm going to keep doing, nothing is going to change."

The Cavs lost Luke Harangody to a hip pointer and were already without Daniel Gibson, who is all but certain to miss his second straight game with a quad injury.

They should get one reinforcement Friday with the debut of Davis, who was acquired from the Clippers - along with an unprotected first-round pick - last week for Mo Williams.

Davis has missed the Cavaliers' three games since the trade because of a knee injury, but he's expected to make his Cleveland debut by backing up Ramon Sessions.

"(I'm excited) to get out here and start working with these young guys, Davis said. "It'll be good to get out there in a game situation and just see what we can all do together."

Davis had 16 points and a season-high 16 assists as the Clippers beat the Knicks 116-108 at MSG on Feb. 9.

Cavs win 11th straight vs. Knicks in Baron's debut

NEW YORK (AP) Baron Davis picked up right where LeBron James left off.

It doesn't matter who suits up for the Cleveland Cavaliers - even the players with names the Knicks don't know. They simply don't lose to New York.

Davis scored 18 points in his Cavaliers debut, leading a stunning rally in the fourth quarter as Cleveland beat New York for the 11th straight time, 119-115 on Friday night.

"It's always great to win at The Garden. The Garden is special, especially playing against a team right now that's getting a lot of coverage and they were prepared to beat us bad and we didn't let that happen," Davis said. "This victory is very sweet because it's a sense of a miniature rivalry brewing here."

J.J. Hickson scored 23 and Luke Harangody also had 18, but the spark came from Davis in his first game since his trade from the Los Angeles Clippers last week. He scored 12 points in the final 6-plus minutes after the Knicks had built a 12-point lead, including a 3-pointer that gave Cleveland a 116-112 lead with 10.6 seconds left.

Amare Stoudemire answered with a 3 for the Knicks. But after a free throw by Ramon Sessions, Carmelo Anthony was called for a charging foul after he broke free of Anthony Parker's attempt to hold him, and the last-place Cavaliers beat the Knicks for the third time this season.

"It's a tough loss. I really don't want to say it's embarrassing, but it is a tough loss ... knowing how important it is to take care of home court," said Anthony, who had to ask the name of Cleveland's Samardo Samuels, who took the crucial charge from him. "To lose to them guys tonight, it's a tough one to fathom."

Stoudemire matched a season high with 41 points and Anthony added 29, but the Knicks still haven't defeated the Cavs since Dec. 19, 2007.

"I just think we didn't come with the proper energy that we needed in a game like this. It was a very important game for us, and we didn't quite accept the challenge of beating these guys," Stoudemire said. "And this is a team that's beat us three times this year already, and the motto is to beat the teams we're supposed to beat."

It appeared the skid would end Friday as the Knicks built a series of double-digit leads. But Davis, who hadn't played since the trade because of a sore left knee, made an immediate impact as the NBA's worst team snapped a 26-game road losing streak.

Anthony Carter's 3-pointer sent the Knicks to the fourth quarter with an 88-85 lead, and it seemed their superior talent would take over from there. Anthony made the first basket of the quarter, then found fellow newcomer Shelden Williams for a dunk and a 92-85 lead 45 seconds into the period.

Anthony converted a spinning bucket in the lane with 10:07 remaining, sinking the free throw during a loud "Melo! Melo!" chant, then Stoudemire scored to extend it to 100-88.

But Davis had nine points in a 16-4 spurt, and Hickson and Samuels resumed contesting every New York shot at the rim as Cleveland battled back to tie it at 106 on Sessions' layup with 3:28 to play.

Stoudemire's jumper gave the Knicks a final lead at 112-110 with 58 seconds left, but Parker answered with a go-ahead 3 with 45 seconds remaining. New York failed to score and Cleveland ran the clock down before Davis, wearing No. 85, nailed a 3 from straightaway for a 116-112 advantage.

Stoudemire and Anthony were often unstoppable offensively. But New York badly missed Chauncey Billups down the stretch while he sat out a second straight game with a bruised left thigh.

When James wore the wine and gold, Cleveland would beat the Knicks with talent. Even though he's gone now, the Knicks still haven't been able to solve the Cavaliers. Cleveland was on a 10-game losing streak when it beat New York in overtime in December.

The Cavaliers then simply outworked the Knicks in the second meeting, racking up a 62-42 rebounding advantage in their 115-109 victory last Friday. This time, they snapped a two-game losing streak and showed they could be dangerous the rest of the way with Davis on the perimeter and Hickson attacking the backboards.

"I just think, again, for us it's a process of trying to get better each game," Cavs coach Byron Scott said. "Our younger guys are starting to understand what it takes to be a professional athlete in this league."

New York raced to a 22-10 lead midway through the first quarter, but Cleveland hit four 3-pointers late in the period, two by Davis, and tied it at 32 headed to the second. The Knicks pushed it back into double digits halfway through the second, but still couldn't shake the Cavs despite shooting 60.5 percent in the half. New York led 64-58 at the break.

Notes: Actress Jessica Alba, a friend of Davis, was seated courtside. ... The Knicks were wearing their home whites for the first time since Feb. 9. They had been wearing blue road uniforms from the 1969-70 championship season as part of the NBA's "hardwood classic" series during their last four home games.

THE FACTS: Anthony Parker and Baron Davis hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cap a 24-8 fourth-quarter run and the Cavaliers overcame a 12-point deficit in the final seven minutes to beat the Knicks for the third time this season, 119-115, at Madison Square Garden. The win snapped a 26-game road losing streak for Cleveland, which owns the NBA's worst record.

Amar'e Stoudemire tied his season-high with 41 points for the Knicks.

THE STAT: After scoring six points through three quarters in his Cavs' debut, Davis had 12 in the final period, including two 3-pointers, with the 6-11 Jared Jeffries guarding him. Davis entered the game with a sore left knee and head coach Byron Scott said he only planned to play him 20-25 minutes. Davis finished with 18 points and five assists in 26 minutes.

TURNING POINT: With the Cavaliers up 117-115, Anthony drove to the basket on an isolation play and was whistled for a charge on rookie Samardo Samuels with 1.8 seconds remaining. It was the third charge of the game Samuels drew and the second in the fourth quarter on Anthony.

QUOTABLE II: "I guess it was an offensive foul. He called it. I didn't want to settle for a jump shot at that time. I saw a clear path. The guy came and stepped in and took a big charge on his behalf."

HOT: After putting up career-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds in his first career start against San Antonio, Samuels, the former Louisville and Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict's Prep standout, finished with 15 points and six rebounds.

NOT: Shawne Williams went 1-for-7 for the Knicks. With the Cavs up 113-112, he missed a 17-footer with 29 seconds after he had an open look at a 3.

NOTABLE: The Knicks are 0-3 this season against Cleveland. Of the Cavs' 12 wins, 25 percent have come against New York. The teams play again April 3 at the Garden.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Jon Stewart and several members of The Allman Brothers Band sat courtside. The Allmans begin a two-week run at the Beacon Theater March 10.
