Warriors-Wizards Preview

Golden State is off to a poor start on its longest road trip of the season. Even a matchup with the lowly Washington Wizards might not guarantee things will get better for the struggling Warriors.

The Warriors look to avoid a fifth consecutive loss overall Wednesday night to the Wizards, who have dropped six in a row themselves.

After losing to Boston and Atlanta on a brief homestand, Golden State (26-33) has dropped the first two stops on its seven-game trip. The Warriors opened the stretch with a 126-123 loss at struggling Minnesota on Sunday, then followed with a 109-100 defeat at Indiana on Tuesday.

The four-game skid likely drained any momentum the Warriors built by winning seven of the previous nine contests. Golden State is 12th in the Western Conference, 6 1/2 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot.

While Golden State ranks near the bottom of the NBA allowing 105.9 points per game, it has given up 111.3 per contest the last four games.

The Warriors allowed Indiana to shoot 51.2 percent from the field in the second half Tuesday.

"I think we're focused on what we're trying to do," guard Stephen Curry said of the Warriors' defense. "We have a lot of effort. We have to look at film and see what teams are doing. I'm trying to find an answer. I don't really have one."

Though it would seem Golden State has a good chance to get back on track versus a Washington team that has lost 17 of 20, the Warriors have lost three of four overall and two straight on the road against the Wizards.

Washington averaged 115.0 points on 51.1 percent shooting to sweep the two-game season series versus Golden State in 2009-10.

The Wizards (15-44), however, have averaged 92.5 points during their current six-game skid. Washington has lost four of the last eight games by 20 or more points.

It shot 35.6 percent in Monday's 105-77 home loss to Chicago.

"Our fans were trying to fight back for us," said Washington forward Andray Blatche, who has totaled 46 points and 18 rebounds the last two home games versus Golden State. "But it came to the point where we didn't give them no reason to fight back after we were down by 20-something."

The Wizards must try to end their skid without coach Flip Saunders, who has left the team due to "a family emergency involving his mother." Assistant Randy Wittman will take over, just as he did when Saunders missed a Dec. 29 win over Indiana for the same reason.

Though Washington has struggled, rookie point guard John Wall is playing better. Despite being held to nine points against Chicago, Wall has averaged 19.9 the last seven games.

He'll match up for the first time against Curry, who has totaled 53 points the last two games. The second-year point guard scored 27 in each of the two losses to Washington last season.

Curry had 20 points while Reggie Williams scored 25 off the bench Tuesday as the Warriors, who could not hold a nine-point first-half lead.

Among the NBA scoring leaders averaging 24.7 points, Golden State's Monta Ellis was held to 13 at Indiana. He's averaged 16.0 points during the four-game skid.

A day after Washington bought out the contract of veteran Mike Bibby, who played just two games since being traded to the Wizards last week, the club did the same with forward Al Thornton on Tuesday.

The Warriors are reportedly interested in the forward, who averaged 8.0 points and 3.2 rebounds in 49 games for the Wizards.

Curry sparks Warriors to 106-102 win over Wizards

WASHINGTON (AP) Golden State built a 20-point lead by the third quarter Wednesday night, then seemed to take it easy and very nearly paid the price.

The Warriors withstood a furious rally by the Washington Wizards for a 106-102 victory that wasn't sealed until Stephen Curry hit three free throws in the final 5.9 seconds.

Curry finished with 29 points and nine rebounds as Golden State snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 1-2 on its season-high seven-game road trip.

"You're always in control of the game if you're winning, and they had to do so much to get back in it," Curry said. "You don't want to be in that situation, so we have to learn from that and keep that lead and hopefully maintain that throughout the fourth quarter."

The Warriors jumped on the Wizards at the outset of the second half, with Curry and Monta Ellis stepping up on offense to slowly boost a nine-point advantage. Ellis' driving layup gave Golden State an 85-65 bulge with 4:07 left in the third and it seemed as if the rout was on.

"All of a sudden, you look up and you're down 20," said Randy Wittman, who served as acting Wizards coach while Flip Saunders missed the game to attend to his ailing mother.

Washington, which has now lost seven straight and 16 of 18 overall, got within 103-102 on Nick Young's deep 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds remaining. Curry hit two free throws to push the lead to 105-102 with 5.9 seconds left, and Young's desperation 3 from the top of the key with 1.7 seconds remaining was well off the mark. Curry added one final free throw.

"I wish I could take it back," said Young, who scored a game-high 31 points. "But you can't do nothing about it now."

For the Warriors, who had big offensive nights only to lose to Minnesota and Indiana in their last two games, it was a familiar story with a different ending.

"When you've gone through a streak of losing, to get a win - no matter how it ends up - nobody will pay attention to how the fourth quarter went," Golden State coach Keith Smart said.

The Warriors took advantage of the Wizards' porous defense early, driving the lane with ease to score 25 fast-break points. Ellis finished with 21 points and Dorell Wright added 14.

The Warriors also held a 54-40 advantage on the boards, with David Lee accounting for 16.

"I'd like to think that when we outrebound the other team we have a very good win-loss record, so I try to set the tone and if shots come my way, they do, and if they don't, they don't," Lee said. "My main concern is to continue rebounding."

Andray Blatche had 20 points and John Wall added 14 points and six assists for Washington.

"To fight back and have a shot to tie it at the end is a credit to them, but we can't afford to dig ourselves a hole," Wittman said.

Defense was optional for most of the game, not surprising given both teams ranked in the bottom third of the league in points per game allowed.

Golden State took control in the second quarter, with its bench players sparking a 9-0 run to break a 42-42 deadlock. Reggie Williams finished off the burst with an emphatic dunk to give the Warriors a 51-42 edge with 5:42 remaining in the period. Curry kept the advantage at nine heading into halftime by draining a 3 with less than a second left.

Notes: F Al Thornton, who agreed to a buyout with the Wizards on Tuesday and is expected to join the Warriors on Thursday once he clears waivers, worked out at the Verizon Center before the game. ... Maurice Evans and Jordan Crawford finally were able to participate in their first practice Tuesday after playing in two games since their trade from Atlanta. "We're feeling more comfortable," Evans said. "Obviously, everything didn't come together all at once, but I think we can assist the team by playing with a lot more energy and a fresh attitude." ... Wittman said he wanted Wall and Young to have 10 rebounds between them due to the perimeter nature of the game. The pair finished with two boards.

THE FACTS: Stephen Curry scored 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Monta Ellis scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half as the Golden State Warriors snapped their four-game losing streak with a 106-102 road win at the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Curry scored nine points in the third quarter as the Warriors raced out to an 85-65 lead and led by 17 heading into the fourth. The Wizards then rallied with a furious comeback, outscoring the Warriors 28-15 in the final quarter. Nick Young scored 14 of his game-high 31 points and his wild 3-pointer with 6.9 seconds left pulled the Wizards to within 103-102.

Fouled twice in the closing seconds, Curry went 3-for-4 from the line, the final one coming after Young missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer. Dorell Wright added 14 points as the Warriors held on in the first meeting between the two teams this season. Andray Blatche finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Wizards, who have lost seven straight and nine of 11.

THE STAT: Led by 16 rebounds from David Lee, the Warriors held a commanding 54-40 advantage on the boards.

QUOTABLE II: "We have plenty of scorers and rebounding is one of our team's weaknesses. We play a smaller lineup and that's something that is very important for us to do to out-rebound the other team ... I like to set the tone."

TURNING POINT: Tied at 42 with 7:14 remaining in the second quarter, Acie Law's reverse layup started a 9-0 Warriors run. Golden State retained that advantage heading into the halftime locker room, leading 62-53 as they out-rebounded Washington 31-18. Curry, who scored 15 points in less than 15 first-half minutes, opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer and Ellis added a jumper to make it 67-53.

QUOTABLE III: "Tonight I found myself in a lot of open spots to get some jump shots off and to get to the basket. It started off early, trying to put some pressure on the defense, just being aggressive. That's my role on the team."

HOT: In the first three games of the Warriors 7-game road swing, Curry is averaging 27.3 points and shooting 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from 3-point territory. The second-year guard was 9-for-18 overall against the Wizards and made 8-of-9 free throws.

NOT: Young finished 4-for-7 from behind the arc, but the rest of the Wizards missed all nine of their 3-point attempts.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Ekpe Udoh, the sixth pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, finished with six points, two rebounds and matched his season-high with three blocks in his first career start. The rookie from Baylor played 30 minutes compared to 13 for Andris Biedrins, the man he replaced. Biedrins had started all 50 games he had played this season and grabbed six rebounds off the bench, but also committed a team-high four turnovers. Udoh can help fantasy owners with rebounds and blocks, but is a rather speculative pickup while Biedrins' minutes have shrunk to the point where he is barely worth stashing.

GOOD MOVE: Wizards rookie forward Trevor Booker played the entire fourth quarter and pulled down eight of his 11 rebounds. Booker finished with seven points.

BAD MOVE: Booker played less than seven minutes through three quarters. With their playoff hopes long gone, it figures at some point the Wizards will give Booker and the other rookies not named John Wall more time. There are 22 games left to see what the team's five rookies have to offer.

ROOKIE WATCH: John Wall scored 14 points and dished out six assists, but had four turnovers and his hands full guarding Curry. Kevin Seraphin had two rebounds in 10 minutes and newly acquired Jordan Crawford scored four points off the bench for the Wizards, but was 0-for-3 on 3-pointers.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The Wizards' sideline was absent head coach Flip Saunders, who left the team to be with his ailing mother. Assistant coach Randy Wittman directed the squad for the second time this season, having picked up a win over Indiana on Dec 29.

QUOTABLE IV: "It's hard for Flip. It's tough because that's his mom. Hopefully he can take care of everything he has to out there and we're going to go out and try our best for him."

NOTABLE: On Tuesday, Wall was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for February after receiving the same honor in January. Ending the month averaging 15.4 points, 9.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds, Wall joined Oscar Robertson and Damon Stoudamire as the only rookies to average at least 15 points, eight assists and four rebounds through February.
